Send us a textFor Devin Pancake, trail running represents much more than a post-collegiate athletic pursuit—it's a thoughtful 30-year journey he's just beginning. Fresh off his win at the Antelope Island Buffalo Run 25K and his selection for the 2025 Trail Team Elite, Devin brings refreshing perspective to a sport that often celebrates immediate success. The conversation traces Devin's path from running a 4:00 mile at Utah State University to discovering trail running through iconic films like "Where Dreams Go to Die" and "Found on 49." Unlike many collegiate runners who turn to trails after burnout, Devin maintained a healthy relationship with running throughout college, crediting his coach for emphasizing sustainable development over grinding for immediate results.Devin shares the surreal experience of racing alongside Western States champion Adam Peterman in his first ultramarathon, chatting with the elite runner for miles while pushing his own limits. This story perfectly captures his approach to trail running—competitive but joyful, serious about performance but equally focused on connection and experience. His willingness to return to Speed Goat 50K after a self-described "humbling" first attempt demonstrates his commitment to learning and growth. What makes Devin's perspective particularly valuable is his balanced enthusiasm for everything from fast 25Ks to potential 100-milers and FKT attempts. Supported by the Trail Team Elite and coached by long-trail master Joe McConaughey through the All-In Collective, he's developing the skills to pursue both competitive excellence and soul-enriching adventures. His inspiration comes from thoughtful pioneers like Courtney Dauwalter and Jared Campbell, reflecting his own view of running as "a form of long-life meditation."Follow Devin's journey on Instagram @devinpancake as he tackles upcoming challenges including the Desert Rats 21K, Speed Goat 50K, and potentially Sunapee Scramble Mountain Classic while preparing for his Uinta Highline Trail FKT attempt. His story reminds us that the most fulfilling path in trail running might be one that balances serious competition with genuine appreciation for the mountains and community.

In The Spell Of The Barkley tells the story of the Barkley race in Tennessee with its history and traditions, how the author discovered it and became determined to finish the “fun run”, and explores the reasons why participants keep coming back despite being almost guaranteed to fail. The book is a mix of the authors experience and stories of the people he met in the ultrarunning world. A few people he talks about in the book are:Frozen Ed; the author of the book Michiel read, and the person who invited him to come watch his first Barkley.Jared Campbell; 3-time Barkley finisher.Gary Robbins; Canadian ultrarunner who missed the cutoff by 6 seconds when completing the Barkley and so doesn't count as a finisher.Gideon; an ultrarunner and friend who crews Michiel through several races which he ended up finishing in part due to the Gideon's help.Michiel Panhuysen is a Journalist and ultrarunner. He is a multiple-time Barkley entrant, having fallen under the spell of this event in the early 2010s when he read Frozen Ed's book Tales From Out There. On each occasion that he entered, the Barkley won, but not because Michiel came unprepared. He ran many grueling races and events including:Tor des Geants; a 330 km race with 24000 m of D+.Petite Trotte a Leon (on 3 seperate occations); a team event that is far from being a little jaunt through the mountains and requires navigation skills. The Legends Trail; a 250 km race through the Ardennes. If you're interested in getting a copy of the book for yourself, you can find it on Amazon:https://a.co/d/hQbSVNB Support the showAny feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. By Davy Crockett - Listen or Read Subscribe to Ultrarunning History Podcast New Book! Grand Canyon Rim to Rim History The Barkley Marathons course (thought to be roughly 130 miles and about 63,000 feet of elevation gain) at Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee was conquered for the first time in six years. Laz (Gary Cantrell) blew the conch shortly before 9 a.m., on March 14, 2023, signaling to the competitors that they had one hour to prepare for the start. At 9:54 a.m. Laz, sporting a new "geezer" hat in Japanese, lit the ceremonial cigarette, and about 40 daring athletes were off and running on the grueling course that “eats its young.” Previously, only fifteen people had finished the 100-mile version of this brutal trail race which was introduced in 1986. The 2023 start of the Barkley Marathons The 2023 field, including eight women, ran or walked up the trail toward the Cumberland Mountains. They had all trained hard, but also had to figure out and endure the purposely mysterious and fun registration process. In addition to writing an essay, this year, they had to answer a series of questions including, "What will be the 119th element on the periodic table." Frozen Ed at Frozen Head State Park 75-year-old “Frozen” Ed Furtaw was the oldest starter. He was the first person ever to finish the Barkley Marathons back in 1988 when the course was about 55 miles. He finished that year in 32:14. This Barkley legend also came up with the idea for the book checkpoints, so runners could prove they made it around the course. This year, Furtaw was the first Barkley casualty, returning to camp early during loop one. Several runners finished loop one in a blazing 8:18. The cutoff for loop one was 13:20. To get an official finish, runners needed to finish five loops within 60 hours. There were no course markings, just general directions to the book checkpoints, and they could take a map. No GPS contraptions are permitted, but they could take a compass and a primitive watch. Seven runners did not finish loop one in time to start loop two, but 31 started loop two. Loop one was in the clockwise direction, two and three would be counter-clockwise, four in the preferred clockwise direction. For loop five (if any runners reached that far), the first runner could choose their direction, and the next runner would have to go in the opposite direction. The weather was pretty incredible this year, although the water jugs provided at the tower on Frozen Head still froze during the night. Keith Dunn As usual, Keith Dunn was the main resource in the camp for Barkley updates, staying up late at night to tweet updates to his 65,000 followers. For a time, he was trending #3 on Twitter. He used three phones with different network carriers to make sure he could stay connected. During Loop one, instead of naming runners, he gave them nicknames describing them such as, "Guy with Mohawk," "Guy with Glasses," and "Another Bearded Guy." Three-time Barkley finisher, Jared Campbell, was called "nondescript guy" for the duration of his run. Nickademus de la Rosa and Laz Barkley veteran Nickademus de la Rosa, of Bellingham, Washington, a previous finisher, returned to camp before finishing loop two. He said, “I am done at 1.75 loops and couldn't be happier with the decision. I got what I wanted (which was to see if the course was still possible for me.) After some irrecoverable navigational errors, too slow of a pace and a dying headlamp I lost precious time needed in order to finish.” As runners finished loops, they presented their collection of thirteen book pages to Laz, proving that they reached each book on the course. Their pages needed to match the bib number they were assigned for the loop. About a day before the race, a master map of the locations of the books was provided by Laz. Traditionally book titles are amusingly appropriate for the task, such as "Death Walks the Woods," and "Don't Count Me Out.
There are movies that most people recognize as good/great and enjoyable to watch. We decided to take a handful of those movies and put them in their place. My three guests and I each picked five popular, well renowned (for the most part) movies that we ourselves do not like and made arguments for why they suck. It's that simple. Titles such as, Inception, Avatar, Christmas Vacation, Turning Red and even Star Wars! Mark and Blair sit down to talk with mountain athlete, Justine Hewitt. Blair and Justine met in the valley of the Grand Canyon a few years ago when both were running the Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim for fun and decided to finish their route together. Justine is accomplishing big feats in her local Utah mountains and beyond while remaining under-the-radar (for now). They discuss Justine's 2022 win at RUFA (Running Up for Air), where she completed 11 laps on Grandeur Peak for a total of 63.8 miles and 35,618 feet of vertical gain in 24 hours. It's easy to understand Justine's nickname ‘The Queen of Vert' from her single day efforts and her 500,000 vertical foot goal for 2022 (which she reached in early November). They also discuss her first 100-mile effort, The Millwood 100, a backyard vert fest that criss-crosses the Wasatch, created by local athlete Jared Campbell. Justine set the Women's Fastest Known Time and was one of 22 total to ever complete the route at the time. While the numbers are impressive and indicative of Justine's strength, grit, and determination, it is her gratitude for being in the mountains and her enthusiasm to encourage others that shines more brightly than any trophy or accolade. She trains quietly every single day and approaches each chance to be in the mountains with humbleness and appreciation. She is grateful to be out there and her excitement and gratitude — her spirit — reverberates along all the trails she runs and through all the people she runs with.

Great movies are made with great heroes. Characters you care about and root for. Characters you love, feel for and want to win in the end. These characters become as great as they are because of how terrible and easy to hate their adversaries are. Enter, the Villains. The 2021 Barkley Marathons Had No Finishers This year’s Barkley Marathons looked slightly different than previous editions. There were few international competitors due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, and because of this, a smaller field of runners (usually 40 runners line up), almost entirely Americans, took on the beast. Additionally, runners were required to get COVID-19 tests ahead of arrival, among other safety protocols. A strong contingent of Barkley veterans lined up at the start, including Big’s Backyard champion Maggie Guterl, two-time Barkley Fall Classic winner Liz Canty, the only three-time Barkley finisher Jared Campbell, and multi-time Barkley attempter Jamil Coury. There was also a lot of excitement around Barkley virgins (first-timers) Courtney Dauwalter, Western States and Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc champion; and Luke Nelson, Tor des Geants finisher. Guterl, Canty, and Dauwalter were attempting to become the first woman to finish the Barkley. The race started midweek, in order to deter spectators. Founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell blew the conch at 2:03 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 18, and runners set off on the first loop an hour later, when Cantrell lit his cigarette. Runners dealt with rainy and foggy conditions throughout the entire event. ‘It’s impossible to say’: Chris Froome unsure of when he’ll be ready to fight for GC in races again Chris Froome has admitted that he doesn’t know when he will be able to compete for victory again. The Briton is continuing his comeback from serious injuries at this week’s Volta a Catalunya, but despite headlining Israel Start-up Nation’s team, he was dropped on the opening stage and finished 90th on stage two’s time trial, 2-05 down on former Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Rohan Dennis. The upbeat and confident Froome has made no secret in declaring his intention to win a record-equalling fifth Tour de France, but asked by Cycling Weekly if that was still a realistic goal he could fulfil this season, he said: “I can’t really put any time on it. I am just taking it one week at a time at the moment. “It’s just about following the process and I am not putting a timeline on it. Naturally, I would love to be ready for the Tour de France but I have to keep following the process and do what I can.” What's New in the 303: How Triathlon was Introduced to the World The History and Background of Triathlons A “triathlon” is defined as a three-part sports discipline comprising swimming, cycling, and running. The three sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event over varying distances. Triathlon history dates back to the early 1970s and originated with the San Diego Track Club. The triathlon was designed to be an alternative to hard track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25, 1974. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised a 10 km run, 8 km cycle, and 500 m swim. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in such a short time. Over the next decade, the triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition worldwide. Three-time Barkley Marathons finisher Jared Campbell was the first to complete the first loop of this year’s Barkley Marathons in Tennessee, arriving back in camp after 10 hours and 21 minutes, as reported by Keith Dunn on Twitter, then getting back out onto the course with less than 10 minutes’ rest. He was accompanied by Luke Nelson. Numerous others have completed the first loop and are moving on to Loop 2, including multiple Fun Runner Jamil Coury, Maggie Guterl, first-timer Courtney Dauwalter, Wes Thurman, Scott Martin, Chris Hanlon, Liz Canty, Nikolay Nachev, Pavel Paloncy, Harold Zundel, Andy Pearson and Ian Farris. The following runners have been tapped out: Peter Mortimer, David Hughes, Ryan King, Ron Moore, Jake Rankinen, Tano Isola, Frank Gonzalez and Karen McNeany. Several runners still have not returned from Loop 1, but when they do they will be tapped out, since the 13:40 cutoff has long since passed. https://runningmagazine.ca/trail-running/ten-runners-are-through-loop-1-at-the-barkley-marathons/ #AND3RSON #HeartFailureSurvivor #EnduranceAthlete In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. Welcome back to another episode of the Rite of Passion Podcast. It's been awhile since I've released my last episode, but that's life, right? Either way, I'm very excited to be introducing you to a great friend, Jared Campbell. Jared is from Wynnewood, Oklahoma and graduated from East Central University. Jared and I knew it was only a matter of time until he joined me on the podcast. The only question was, what type of episode were we going to do? Serious, or relaxed and fun? Well, we went for option two. On another segment of Just for Laughs, Jared and I go back and forth asking each other questions and having brief conversations about each topic. We discuss our guilty pleasures, pet peeves, and much, much more. This is a great episode for a long drive, or when you're looking to have a laugh or two. Jared and I certainly enjoyed this episode, and I hope you do too. If you enjoy this episode please consider leaving me a review and a rating so others might find the show as well! Additionally, I encourage you to go back and listen to my previous episodes as well. You can connect with me on Instagram @riteofpassion and let me know your thoughts on the show, or tell me what you want to hear next. The success or failure - and misery or enjoyment - of a project is often dependent on your partner! Everyone intuitively knows this but we rarely hear any discussion about it - so let's discuss it with Jared Campbell. Talk in advance to ascertain: - Are we inspired by this route or is it a 'resumé-builder'? - Will there be media coverage or will it be private? - Is this 'do or die' or are we going to 'see how it goes'? - Have the necessary technical skills been rehearsed? Discuss during the project: - An honest look at each others condition - A frank assessment of the conditions and safety - It's a team effort - how can we work together, and maybe support someone who is struggling
Jared discusses the 4 key components - - - 1) Planning Everything is in a spreadsheet! Best weather advice ever (Skurka) Snotel site Plot your route in CalTopo Follow your route using Gaia Best article on how to prolong battery life of your smart phone (Dixon) Rehearse in advance crux technical maneuvers and any new gear "Plan where you're going, and also plan where you might have to bail". 2) Gear "The InReach Mini is amazing" Trekking Poles are used for uphill power, downhill economy, erecting shelter, and stream crossings "My packraft packs down to the size of a one liter bottle" "The pack is key - it's where everything goes - gear must be organized and accessible in the front" "My new favorite gear is the Katahdin BeFree" (filter can be used on other bottles) 3) Food "The longer I do this, the more it looks like everyday food" "I figure 300 cal/hour of moving time" 4) Strategy "There's a lot of room for improvement just in strategy". "You can beat someone who is fitter with better tactics" "Us old guys like the thought of that." (BB)

Luke has FKTs on the Idaho 12ers (9 summits over 12,000'), and the Utah 13ers (17 over 13,000'). A few weeks ago he did the Wasatch Ultimate Ridge Linkup, a gnarly but entirely logical Jared Campbell route ringing Little Cottonwood Canyon, starting directly above Salt Lake City. "The WURL is a fascinating route; it took several years for me to feel ready to even try it. I wanted to be able to move not only quickly through this terrain, but safely at the same time." Luke is very conscious of the “Kilian Effect”: "I’ve been very careful how I’ve talked about this - I don’t consider it a running route - it’s a mountain route. If you’re an experienced trail runner, you might not have the skillset that’s appropriate to do this route."
Ultra runner Jared Campbell discusses what drew him to ultra running, and how losing his father at a young age likely led to his desire to try and control challenging situations. The only three-time finisher of the Barkley Marathons, Jared discusses what is so alluring about undertaking adventures that include pain and the probability of failure. His experiences as an ultra runner training for the iconic Barkley, led him to create his own event, which couples his passion for mountain running with environmental advocacy. His event, Running Up For Air or RUFA, has become wildly popular, selling out and expanding to another Utah mountain, as well as a separate day of indoor climbing. Jared gives insight into the gift of being able to see the beauty in any situation, as well as offering some inspiration for anyone who has ever dreamed of doing something most people think is impossible. RUFA site: https://runningupforair.com Breath Utah site: https://www.breatheutah.org Story about Jared's 2016 event: https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865648889/Amy-Donaldson-One-mans-vision-helps-a-community-one-mans-tribute-lifts-a-family.html
Jared Campbell is the sleep deprivation king. He has the most Barkley Marathons finishes (3); he has 10 Hardrock 100 finishes including a win; he's the holder of many original FKTs; he founded Running Up For Air and he's rrreally into "speed canyoneering"... wait, what? Finally, he's a "runner's runner." He's basically not on social media or sponsored - instead he's the lead engineer in a full-time job and a devoted family man with a wife and two daughters. How does someone like this push his body and mind to such extreme places, especially related to the Barkley which is as close to an FKT as a race can get? He asks himself: "Is my mind in the right place? Is my commitment there? Over the years I've developed a sense for 'yes, I have my mind in the right place for that amount of time,' whether it's 20 or 30 hours or more." Want more? Former NFL superstar (who retired after playing four stellar games -- what have you done with YOUR life, haters?) and current stand-up comedian Jared Campbell shares some stories from his time at "THE U" with his brother, current NFL stud Calais Campbell. Oh, and he might have some Gronk tales to share as well. Additionally, Rob and Dave break down the triumphant (at least so far) return of The Kicker Podcast's favorite broken son Markelle Fultz, and why the Giants are -- surprise, sur-freakin'-prise -- making a really dumbhead move by trading Odell Beckham Jr. Oh, and Dave has some bizarrely harsh words for Adam Schefter. Let's be honest, though, he's had it coming for a while. Follow Jared Campbell's awesome The Team Network initiative on all social media!
