Show Notes 0:00: With a LOT of Winter anime shows to discuss, Justin and Helen delve right into the news of the past few weeks, starting with…something weird! But also something very bad, as a manga based off a light novel series has been suspended because the artist decided to plagiarize, and it was egregious enough that the editorial department had to put out a statement about it. 2:32: Aniplex and Crunchyroll’s new anime production venture, HAYATE Inc, has acquired studio Lay-duce; Kageki Shojo!! author Kumiko Saiki was injured at a music festival she went to a few weeks ago, and we’re all hoping she’s ok, as the injuries could be serious (diagnosed with a sprained neck, getting a CT scan to check if her brain is bleeding) 7:09: George Morikawa will be on break due to his hospitalization a few weeks ago, so no Hajime no Ippo for a while; Tawawa on Monday will be on a two-month break and see a return to Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine May 25. 7:51: The two hosts discuss the passing of manga creator Rakko due to heart failure, and the circumstances as well. Licenses 9:51: Yen Press has launched a new imprint: Avocado House! (Both hosts wonder how they came up with it). Appears they’ll be having strictly international novels for this imprint (to give them options + have a clear delineation from Yen On), and they’ve launched with the following works: Keigo Higashino's Laplace’s Witch Yūki Shasendō's Sickness unto Love Gyatei Murasaki's 1,000 Words Left to Live Aya Saitō's The Curse Called Mother, the Prison Called Daughter Haeyeon Jeong's The Place of the Flamingo Yen Press also had some announcements at their Sakuracon panel: Ryoko Kui’s The Dragon School Is Atop the Mountain Natsuki Takaya’s In Such a Small World Neruko Nichinichi’s Non and Akari Futa Kimura’s Fate Rewinder: All Great Feats Require Time Hikaru Sakurai, Tsuta Suzuki, & TYPE-MOON’s Fate/Prototype: Fragments of Sky Silver 21g & Tegekiken’s Elden Ring: Become Lord Mio Tatsumoto’s Meiji-Era Master-and-Servant Tungsten Pieta’s How to Keep a Human 14:18: After their April Fools’ Wonderful Wednesday event, Seven Seas made official announcements this time: Yoichi Sayonaka & Ryuta Yanagi's Gear × Magic: Reincarnated as an Engineer, I’ll Save the Villainous Princess (Airship) Ryūto & Heiro's The Faceless Mercenary Wants to Settle Down: Homestead at the Edge of the Galaxy (Airship, digital only) Yū Omiya, Yōhei Kazawa, & Ale's My Girlfriend Cheated on Me, and Now My Flirty Underclassman Won't Leave Me Alone manga Indosō, Yasuumi's Building a Monster Girl Harem with Forbidden Science (Ghost Ship) Yog Akase's Nono’s Phantom Shop 15:34: Dark Horse took the time to have a manga licensing event themselves, and here’s what they’ll be releasing this year: Rin Suzukawa’s Asobi Asobase Kenji Tsuruta’s Forget-me-not Kouji Mori’s Suicide Island Hiromasa Okujima’s Babanba Banban Vampire 17:00: A few more Manga Mavericks titles will be arriving this year; Alien Books will also have a couple titles coming this Fall season; We’ll have an audiobook version of The Apothecary Diaries sometime this year, but will it involve the English voice of Maomao? We shall soon see! 21:31: And finally, while not quite licenses, the two hosts talk about the now updated Bookwalker service, which both (especially Helen) tested as this episode was recording. She found some concerns. Justin also had concerns, but he had them before the podcast episode though! Streaming News 29:03: Not a bunch of streaming news this time, but the hosts had to note how awkward this streaming business can be see — see Ichijōma Mankitsu Gurashi!, which can be seen in a couple places…that also includes Rakuten VIKI. Rakuten VIKI? The drama service? Main Topic: Winter 2026 Final Impressions 31:54: Justin and Helen spend a bunch of time talking about what was ultimately a very strong Winter anime season. There were still lowlights (Roll Over and Die! [43:00] being one that needed a much better fate), but overall there was lots to be impressed by (Fate/Strange Fake, You and I Are Polar Opposites S1, Sentenced to be a Hero, Tamon’s B-Side to name a few). …Butttttt Journal with Witch (32:04) was clearly the best anime of the winter season. Did the hosts (especially Justin) do their best to make it seem like it wasn’t (1:42:12)? You can guess the answer is no! Weird News 1:58:20: There is joy in seeing a work you like get animated and then be either a massive success or moderately successful enough to get multiple sequels. But we live in a world where joy can be fleeting. And for Ascendance of a Bookworm and generative A.I. to be in the same sentence is not a fate you’d want to wish for most things! 2:05:58: Good ole’ mistranslation strikes again, as somehow a collaboration announcement involving Fate/Grand Order and Witch of the Holy Night…involves Madoka Magica? Thanks Grok! 2:07:07: Justin and Helen discuss Netflix, after repeated memes and coordinated attacks on all of their socials by JoJo fans, finally revealed a schedule for Steel Ball Run, which should slow things down…(probably not!); it was actually discussed in the Winter Final impressions section, but Justin had to also shout it here — if you call yourself a final season, that means final! Not an extra arc announced since it basically means it’s not a final season! 2:10:16: Generally speaking, for a franchise to get their work concluded in anime form is very special, so congratulations to the Date A Live franchise as it seems like the next anime project will presumably wrap the series up. But it’s now going to go onto its fifth studio in Fugaku, which is a lot of effort to get this series completed in anime form! 2:12:15: There’s a plan the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has involving anime, manga, and games and how the overseas market will play a role in it — both hosts say good luck; a surprising error occurred on the Japanese digital side that stated DANDADAN would go on break for a month, but the editor announced it was a misprint. 2:13:55: Cute things are happening, and they involved Sailor Moon! First with Artemis II (yes, the one that just went into space) and Sailor Moon’s Artemis being spotted at the CAPCOM desk in Mission Control, and then with Hunter x Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi and Naoko Takeuchi combining for a drawing, which also has Artemis and also Kurapika and Sailor Mars in one image. Sakura Con 2026 just wrapped up and I was lucky enough to host this 2 hour long panel to a room full of fellow Atlus fans! If you saw or listened to the panel from Naka Kon 2026 last month I made sure to include all new trivia and the crowd had plenty of time for questions, but of course we still went over time. Show Notes 0:00: Justin and Helen once again find some time to share what they’ve been up to…ok, only Justin has a title he liked a lot, and it’s published by TOKYOPOP! News 5:53: The hosts then get into discuss Crunchyroll’s latest troubles, ranging from layoffs to a possible security breach that also gets Justin to discuss reporting in the big 2026. 21:02: A couple episodes ago the hosts discussed one live event being cancelled in Japan due to threats — now we’ve gotten another one, this time involving Love Live! and Japan Airlines. 23:02: The Culprit Hanzawa manga is going on hiatus for an unspecified time; meanwhile Kōji Kumeta suffered a finger injury, so he’ll be on hiatus until that heals up. Let’s just say his explanation on how he suffered the cut is indeed hilarious. 24:55: Saint Seiya Episode.G: Requiem is back on Akita Shoten’s Champion Cross website following a 3-month hiatus; Naoki Urasawa’s Asadora is now also back from its hiatus, returning to Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits; and we have another manga magazine in Japan ending publication — Kadokawa’s Comic Alunna. 26:23: The alternative rock band the pillows announced that the band’s drummer, Shinichiro Sato, died on March 23 due to esophageal cancer; The editorial staff of Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine announced a few weeks ago that manga creator Majuro Kaname died in February; and publisher Chikuma Shobo announced that manga creator, Yoshiharu Tsuge, died of aspiration pneumonia at the age of 88. Licenses 30:16: For whatever reason, Titan Manga decided it was finally time to announce what they’re up to for this year: FLIPFLOPs's Darwin’s Game Arata Yamaji's Egnaro the Star-Eating Killer Shin Kazuki's Even After Doronjo-sama Was Reincarnated She Remained a Villainess kamatama's Nova, Little Girl in the Monster Forest Zino's Resident Evil: Death Island Touko Amekawa, Kuroyuki, & Nae Serizawa's The Legendary Witch is Reborn as an Oppressed Princess manga Togawa Yonan's Black Witch Mirror Tatsuya Tobitaka's Ifrit of the Sea Sand Yasuo Isanami's The Obsession of Red Riding Hood 32:29: Seven Seas’ Wonderful Wednesdays is back! My Summoned Beast Is Cute! (Yen On) An omnibus edition of Yoshiki Tonogai's JUDGE 38:43: Usually Justin or manga enthusiasts looking at retailers catch TOKYOPOP licensing lots of things without them saying anything for like months — but it finally seems like TOKYOPOP’s getting around to announcing what they have on time: Lemon Fujikura's My One-Sided Love Hinako Yugumo's If I Could Write My Love Into You Kisa Inami's Blue Spring in Your Eyes Jiro Ōnishi's How to Befriend a Demon Kana's Our Lucky Future Together Hana Ikuta's The Shadow and the Flower Toworu Miyata's Aoharu Once More Kouji Setsu's Enomoto Is No Angel Toto Tsurui's Spicy Milk Candy/Toto Tsurui's Good Hair & Bad Habits Seno Yanase's The Lion Dances With a Loved One Joe Aruku's Caught in Your Web 39:58: Crossed Hearts has licensed Mei Fujimatsu & Satsuki Haru’s Afternoon Tea for Two for their Glam Beat! yuri imprint; Abrams Kana announced they’ve licensed Makiburo, Nazuna Shiraume, & Mai Murasaki’s Within The Villainess manga; MANGA Plus has added Maki Kanemaki’s The Hero’s Bereaved Family to their service; and more Discotek titles have been added to the MediaOCD Discotek Deep Dives list. Streaming News 42:23: During the Akane-banashi YouTube live stream, global streaming platforms and details were revealed for the anime, which premieres later this week. This got Justin to go down an unlikely rabbit hole as another Weekly Shonen Jump title does not go to Crunchyroll for some reason (and instead, it’ll stream for North American users on YouTube, with Netflix streaming the anime beginning in May). 49:36: Helen gets to talk about the other bizarre streaming situation this Spring in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run, which had its first episode (1st STAGE) go up on Netflix, and nothing else. The 2nd STAGE has been announced to air in 2026. When in 2026? Only the execs at Netflix know apparently! And this sure has led to a LOT of discussion regarding how this series has been handled since Netflix made the deal with david production years ago. 1:00:15: The newest anime streaming service in North America, Amasian TV, just added Mugen Train and that can be watched for free; The Crave streaming platform in Canada added 14 anime films, from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero to In This Corner of the World; Lupin the IIIrd The Movie: The Immortal Bloodline has been released digitally for rental or purchase by GKIDS, with a BD release (collaboration with Shout! Studios) coming in July; and thanks to GKIDS, Gundam fans will get to see the second film of the Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway anime project in US theaters May 15. Weird News 1:02:29: You say it’s over…it’s never over apparently! For Shadow Skill, which ended 12 years ago, clearly it getting a sequel shows you can return no matter what; and as rumored, From Far Away is getting an anime adaptation — the shoujo manga started in 1991! 1:08:04: You know, there’s not too many cases where an anime character is added to a video game, and certainly not a fighting game, so we had to note Kenshiro getting added to the latest Fatal Fury game; and sure, bringing back a 4KIDS voice actor can be kind of interesting but generally not terribly weird, but for this particular run of One Piece, there’s levels to having Erica Schroeder return to the One Piece franchise as Joyboy. Oh man did we cover a lot in this episode! My annual catch up with Emris Coscept is here and we had so much to say. In addition to the teases of my eventual PAX East episode, Emris went into detail about SakuraCon and how it was done this year. Questionable details aside, she talks about how her cosplays were a surprise hit, the scope of Artist Alley and other cosplays seen! Then I ended up going over my Japan trip for them as they've been previously and we compared notes on what we did. Again, it feels really good to be creating content for this show again, i hope you all enjoy this near 2hr long chat!
I am incredibly excited to have the wonderfully talented EmrisCoscept back on the show to talk about her latest adventures in both creating art in addition to their time at SakuraCon a few weeks back. From hearing of the area's expansion to the amount of money Emris spent in Artist Alley, she talks about being able to meet so many new people due to the shared common love of things like One Piece. Not only that but you'll hear of many tangents and rants about both of our shared loves like Final Fantasy with XVI's imminent release, how I'll eventually go back into XIV, Emris' passion for loving Star Wars & One Piece, and Nightwing cause if you saw the last time Emris was on, then you'll absolutely know
Well, it took a month, but all of us are back in the swing of things, and not a moment too soon either - Sakura-Con, Anime Boston, AND AnimeJapan 2023 all happened and they brought their own slew of announcements to the table for us to sift through and discuss. And to go along with that, we have another dabble in the wild world of lost media, our brief thoughts on the now-over winter season, plenty of non-AnimeJapan project announcements that run the gamut of quality, and Sentai coming out with a double-shot of dub goodness... at the cost of one title not getting a dub, sadly. In this episode, we check out the new manga that will be appearing in Shonen Jump and check out how big the bag the Mario movie made over the weekend. The media round-up had us going down nostalgia road with the end of an era in Pokemon and talking about our trip to Sakura-Con over the weekend. The Take 5 this week was best types of pizza and it was an absolute train wreck only we can create. Then we wrap things up with our newly formatted Spotlight of the Week where we talk about the anime we watched from week 1 of the spring season. Pull up a chair and join us at the roundtable for another week of anime talk! ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Time Stamps: 5:47- Latest news of the week Food Wars, Kuroko's Basketball Authors Each Launch New Manga in Shonen Jump - 5:50 Super Mario Bros Movie Earns Over 370 Million, Highest Earning Animated Movie Opening in History - 8:29 10:53 - Media Round-Up of the Week (Spoilers if you haven't watched the anime) Pokemon: Mezase Pokemon Master (Pokemon: Aim to Be a Pokemon Master) - 11:03 Sakura-Con - 17:56 ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── 35:34 - Take Five Segment (We announce the topic for the week, we take 5 random items and rank them from 1st to 5th. Whoever wins the trivia question will be allowed to choose what anime we will discuss and we will continue that trend until we are out of time. If neither Lance or Plinchy get the question right, Peter will be able to choose the anime to discuss. In today's episode I have the great pleasure to talk to UK based author of two books and more to follow soon, teacher, martial artist and specialist on Daoist witchcraft, alchemy and magic, Jason Read. Jason's path started like probably a lot of ours out there with visiting a local bookstore. Getting his hands on Dion Fortunes ‘Psychic Self Defence' was just the first step in embarking on a journey of long and serious studies of Western Esotericism where he became familiar with the Golden Dawn's system as well as with Aleister Crowley's writings and a lot more important cornerstones in Western Esoteric Tradition. However, after some time Jason felt that he had to go back to some of the more original sources of Western Esotericism such as the writings of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and after embracing a Neoplatonic path he finally found himself to be attracted by references to Chinese magic made in Kenneth Grant's works. Fascinated by the Chinese traditions Jason decided to live and work in Asia for some time and learned Mandarin fluently. Soon he felt the need to look into forbidden occult Chinese practices in depth but something seemed to be missing to him personally so he relocated to Malaysia where he not only met his future wife but also came across his teacher and entered a 12 years long apprenticeship in the Maoshan tradition, a specific branch of Daoist practice. Find those book to buy HERE In this episode of the show we talk about all those common things that Daoism and Western magic share, point out one often enough overlooked key to magical systems in general and discuss the Western idea of Daoism as an invention. Jason sheds some light on the various branches of Daoism and explains the differences between the Northern and the Southern branch in great detail as well as a lot of parallels to Western magical ideas. We'll go into detail about certain shamanistic practices as the base of an original Chinese magical system and Jason will explain the practice of Qi Gong versus Neigong and the aim of the latter which is quite in harmony with a lot of Western alchemical and spiritual practices. We also touch on the importance of the landscape surrounding the magician and the inclusion of ancestors for his workings. Of course, Jason's two books ‘Thunder Magic' and ‘Fox Magic' that have already been published with Mandrake will be an important topic and he will open up on his motivation using a certain terminology in his writings. Both books are highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about Chinese magical concepts in a profound yet quick and accessible way and the next book in his series will be ‘Practical Chinese Magic' which should be out soon, also published by Mandrake. In this most recent book Jason aims for covering the fundamentals that a skilled Western magician can take out and apply to his practice. Up first IRL news with Joseph drowning in trading cards, and Andrew would like us to be adopted by a selected list of families in anime. Then in industry news we get in topics like the 2nd cancelation of Sakura-Con, some top shonen villains, and new laws are underway to make cosplaying unprofitable. It's a LoFi kinda night at the recording studio. The gang just reading through the geek news of the last week...ish and giving their 2.5 cents. It's new. It's different. And its got a background track courtesy of our bumbling tech guy.
This week Robert took to the studio and gave the post con recap...mostly because somebody had their microphone sitting next to a fan! But its a wholesome take on a great weekend and we hope you loved it as much as we did. Enjoy.
For Halloween this year we did something frightening. Something devious. Something spooky...We played Disney Music Backwards. It sounds kinda dumb but trust me. It's a hoot. Happy Halloween Everyone!

In today's episode, we talk about what could have been at Sakuracon 2020! For context's sake, at the time of recording this episode, it was the weekend that Sakuracon was supposed to happen. Kim of Senpai Squad & Marvin Squarenoodles discuss Sakuracon's of years past and what they want to do to prepare for next years con. The part of today's talk I want to highlight is Kim's decision for Senpai Squad to partner with Dazed Senpai for the Senpai Squad After Party Tour! The primary focus of today's episode deals with how to create a business partnership. We break it down into 2 questions: 1. In Senpai Squad's unique case, what was the reason for needing a business partnership & how do you maintain quality control with another vested interest? 2. The pro's & con's of a business partnership, especially for a 9-city event tour that is unlike any event Senpai Squad has ever hosted in years past One last thing, we decided to do another challenge in this episode. We commissioned the beautiful Aly Brazil to help us with our Chibi art! And so, before fully integrating them into the pod's aesthetic, we decided to play a little game. The first person to find ALL 3 of Chibi's and can send us a screen shot, gets the first ever print sticker of said Chibi's, signed by the us! So...happy hunting!" Please don't forget, if you aren't already, to subscribe to whatever platform you're listening to this on as well as our Youtube channel. Obviously we're a small rinky dink operation, and your support is greatly needed and appreciated for the longevity and growth of the show! So please feel free to leave us comments and reviews on any “aha” moments you felt you were able to take away, or share any personal experiences that you can relate to when it comes to building a business partnership or Sakuracon! While David is in Seattle frolicking with Joseph at Sakura Con, Carlos joins Nick and Brad to discuss the week in gaming. In a week as important as this, you might expect us to be talking about Portal 2 but alas, Carlos decided he wanted to play 50 Cent Bulletproof... how odd. In the news we talk about Nintendo, PSN, and our hopes and dreams in relation to the upcoming Hitman game. Hunker down and clean out your ear holes folks, it's another episode of 4Player Podcast.
