Leadership is a skill. And like all skills, it can be learned. Sure, some people may possess good leadership skills from the get-go but they're not impossible to pick up through practice. The trick is to never stop learning.  This is the kind of mindset that Sarah Hammond, President of Atlas Electrical Air Conditioning Refrigeration and Plumbing Services, Inc has consistently applied with her life. When she worked full time for the company in 2008, she had little to no practical knowledge about the company that her father and brother ran all their lives.   But with her strong determination to learn, Sarah learned the ropes and eventually took over as president four years later in 2012. This is the same attitude that she took with her when she realized that there was a lot of room for her to grow her leadership skills. Sarah understood that there was a lot to learn about people, and so she began the journey that would lead her to personality tests.  In this episode of the Service Business Mastery podcast, Sarah shares several nuggets of leadership wisdom with our hosts Tersh and Josh. The trio also talk about the customer disputes, how best to handle them, and the options contractors have in settling them.    In this episode we discuss: How taking this personality test can help you lead better  Good leadership is all about tailoring your approach to different personalities  How the Better Business Bureau can help contractors settle disputes with customers    Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: This episode is kindly sponsored by Sera (visit their website) CompanyCam (visit their website), and UpFrog (visit their website). Flourish is their new venture providing in-house catering solutions to the corporate environment. Richard has over 20 years' experience in events and hospitality management. His career started working as a Lodge Manager on a game reserve in South Africa and, since moving to the UK, has seen him continue to work at some of the most awe inspiring venues in the UK. He has worked for both independent operators and large market leading conglomerates capturing great learnings from both. While his career has developed, and his role gained ever more responsibility, Richard has never lost his love of providing an exceptional hospitality experience for guests and, most importantly, his sense of fun. And his own event would most definitely be fun: set in the stunning surroundings of Hampton Court Palace Richard treats his guests to a beautiful dinner in the regal 16th century Great Hall. Richard will be serving guest Smoked Mackerel Paté , Roast Venison and a wonderful selection of cheeses. Michael McIntyre will be on hand to entertain guests and then, by special request from Richard, the cheesiest disco possible will be had in the Undercroft. Richard talks through the important lessons he has learnt over the years from taking time to evaluate a situation, to understanding the different needs of the business you are in and the clients you are servicing, and enjoying the challenges in front of you. He discusses the importance of keeping control and how, when working for independent caterers, there is the ability to give that extra personal service. He discusses the many influences on his success from Molly Roland, Sarah Hammond, Bill Toner and Stuart Jenkins all adding to his business management skills and client understanding. Richard is a true ambassador for the Events & Hospitality industry, the diverse experiences and career growth it gives and most importantly the fun can be had (especially when, like him, embarrassment is not an issue).

How often do we get a chance to take a holiday from our life? Sure it may be physically difficult racing, but all we are really doing is looking for food, water and shelter. There are no work deadlines, no social obligations, no chores and there’s often no phone connection. You are free to just ride and you do not have to attend to anything but the task at hand. At the end of the day I’m fortunate to be able to ride and race, seeing parts of the world I never imagined. There is no better way to explore the world than on a bicycle" Excerpt from Touring With A Sense Of Urgency by Jesse Carlsson & Sarah Hammond Host Jordan Addison was able to sit down this week with two people that know more about Ultra Riding & Racing than most others, Sarah Hammond & Jesse Carlsson. Safely back in Melbourne during this lockdown, Jesse and Sarah have spent most of the last year in remote parts of Australia, having given away all they had, and packed all that was left on their bikes to hit the road. During this time they have penned and published their book 'Touring With a Sense Of Urgency - A Comprehensive Guide To Bikepacking', which is a culmination of years of experience and lessons in the world of Ultra Riding, now shared with us the readers. Jesse - who is one of the founders of Curve - and Sarah have an impressive palmares between them, including wins in the TransAm Bike Race & Multiple wins in Race to the Rock, to name but a few. But the stats & figures of their achievements on the bike quickly give way to the bigger question of 'Why?'. Why do these races? Why push yourself to the limits? Why pack your entire life on a bike and live wild with no time limits and be free? It is these questions that we explore in this podcast and the conversations that follow. What started as a side hustle, quickly became her life’s work and purpose. Fueled by the same desire that drives her role as a recruiter, she started The NoW to connect, support and empower women, who like herself, were looking for something more. Sarah's hope is that through this network, you too will find greater clarity, fulfillment, and happiness.   In This Episode We Talk About:   How she created the NoW based on her own need for community. Building a community where women can be vulnerable.  How she still deals with a scarcity mindset while being a successful NYC recruiter. How she was able to have a difficult conversation with her husband.   Show Notes: The NoW Website The NoW Instagram Connect with Awaken and Align: If you enjoyed the podcast, please share it.  Subscribe, rate and review the show wherever you get your podcasts. We kick off with our respective bike moments, before moving on to local bike news incuding Damien Howson's win in the Herald Sun Tour and the 2016 Cycling Victoria Awards. Jesse introduces us to the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, coming up in March, talking about the inpiration behind the event, the history of intrepid overlanders in Australia and the type of race he hoped to create. Sarah Hammond tells us what she is looking forward to in the race and the novelty for Australian racers of riding on home turf. Both are looking forward to seeing the community response to the race, particularly as riders come through major cities such as Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney and we discuss the type of support riders might enjoy along the route. We finish up with some local events including Melbourne Bike Rave this weekend and the World Naked Bike Ride, which unfortunately won't co-incide with the the Melbourne leg of the Indian Pacific Wheel Race. We didn't have the chance to mention it on the show but cyclists in the City of Yarra and particularly those who approach Napier St from Edinburgh Gardens may want to have a look at the Protect Fitzroy North website about a planned development that will have a big impact on this route in terms of car traffic.
