Yuan Shikai's New Army becomes a national model and military reforms spread throughout China. The death of the Empress Dowager brings Zaifeng in as regent to Pu Yi, the three year old emperor. Yuan is sacked and briefly fears for his life. He quietly retires for over two years. A Qing railway reorganization in Sichuan leads to rebellion. Imperial troops are moved south and the remaining Wuchang Garrison launches a mutiny. The 1911 Revolution has begun and the Qing Court appoints Yuan as Governor General to suppress the rebels. Many see the Qing cause as hopeless. Shikai leads troops that gain control of the north bank of the Yangtze River, but after deadly urban combat. Negotiations take months, but eventually lead to a generous abdication package for Pu Yi and an imperial edict ends the Qing Dynasty and proclaims the Republic of China. 2000 years of imperial dynasties end with an almost bloodless struggle. Yuan becomes President as China celebrates the end of Manchu rule. But the honeymoon period will not last long."Revolution of 1911" by Gary Lee Todd, Ph.D. is marked with CC0 1.0.Please fill out our listener survey here! Hosted on Acast. This episode looks at the early life of Yuan Shikai, future president of the Republic of China.Born to a concubine in a leading gentry family in Henan province, Yuan was adopted by his uncle at age 5. He studied the Confucian classics, learned boxing, martial arts and horseback riding. He took over managing the family assets as a teenager and was already working for the empire. He never passed any of the imperial examinations, but rose quickly in the army.A chance military assignment in Korea launched Shikai's meteoric ascent. He rescued the Korean king and became Imperial Commissioner to Korea. We was able to stop Japanese maneuvers there once, but failed to prevent the Sino-Japanese war in 1894. He left Korea for China two weeks before war was declared. Yuan's work for the Qing Empire was quickly undone as Japan shocked China with its strong military advance.Image: "Yuan Shikai, 1859-1916, Militärgouverneur in Shantung" by Siegfried Weiß is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. How do you prepare to be “present” during an event or performance? Well, it's not easy, but there are ways to get you ready one big one is to train your mind. Overcome fear and performance anxiety with Gene and Aaron as they go over these topics. Training for Courage to Perform Your Best Every Time We train and practice our skills, but training our minds to focus when we're nervous is how we reach our potential. Read Article Article on Medium by Tania Moonen The Courage of Being vs. Doing Controlling Your Fear Training Presence Practice Your Skills and Your “Being” Mental Exercises To Train Courage and Presence Three States of the Warrior's Mind Zanshin, Mushin, Fudoshin: Apply the ways of Karate-do to harness the Warrior's Mind Zanshin — The Fighting Mind Definition: Total awareness, alertness —being aware of your surroundings and enemies, while being prepared to react. When we choose to live intentionally and act with purpose we no longer fall victim to whatever happens to us throughout our day. Mushin — ‘Mind No Mind' Definition: A mind not fixed or occupied by thought or emotion and thus open to everything. If we remain cluttered mentally, focused on something else, something other than what we are immediately engaged in — we fail. Mushin is the state of mind that is not fixed on any one thing, not cluttered up by your everday thoughts or emotions. In combat this is essential because you must not try to guess what your opponent is going to do next, you must simply experience and react to them. Fudoshin —The Immovable Mind Definition: It is a philosophical or mental dimension to Japanese martial arts which contributes to the effectiveness of the advanced practitioner. When you set your mind on something and let NOTHING stand in your way to getting what you want or achieving your goal that is Fudoshin. It doesn't mean to achieve your goal at all costs, doing it without bringing harm to others is essential. But the central concept is the unbreakable will to finish what you started. Zen practice teaches us about the four sicknesses of the mind (or “Shikai”) which are; anger, doubt, fear, and surprise. When he was elected president of China in 1912, Yuan Shikai was hailed as his nation’s George Washington, yet four years later he would die as the leader of a country in turmoil after a failed bid to become its emperor. In Yuan Shikai: A Reappraisal (University of British Columbia Press, 2018), Patrick Fuliang Shan uses recent studies of Yuan’s career to examine this controversial figure in a new light. A member of a prominent family of public servants, Yuan’s failure to pass the civil service exams led him instead to adopt a more congenital career in the military. There he quickly established a reputation as an effective imperial official and military reformer, most notably in training China’s first modern army in the aftermath of the First Sino-Japanese War. His subsequent success in a series of increasingly prominent postings culminated in his appointment as Foreign Secretary in 1907, only to be dismissed a year later when his patroness the Dowager Empress Cixi died. Recalled in 1911 to deal with the rebellion in Wuchang, his military credentials made him an indispensable addition to the new republic after the abdication of the last Qing emperor. As Shan demonstrates, Shikai’s popularity declined with his growing assumption of authority, to the point where his attempt to revive the monarchy left him isolated and facing rebellions left unresolved at his death in 1916. During the First World War, nearly a hundred thousand poor Chinese labourers dug British trenches on the western front. Their government hoped that the war would provide opportunities to revise crippling treaties imposed on her by Britain and France and claim back territory lost to Germany and Japan. When Chinese hopes were dashed at the Paris Peace Conference, the long term political consequences in China were immense and dominated the next three decades.
