Have you ever thought what #FakeNews might have looked like 200 years ago? While we may be experiencing a new era of disinformation, the tactics aren't necessarily original. Drawing from their latest book, Stories Are Weapons, journalist and science fiction author Annalee Newitz traces back in history how disinformation, propaganda, and violent threats — all elements of psychological warfare — have evolved into tools of today's domestic culture wars. Newitz argues that America has a deep-rooted history with psychological operations. Beginning with Benjamin Franklin's Revolutionary War–era fake newspaper, then the nineteenth-century wars on Indigenous nations, Newitz follows disinformation to its peak of today's online influence campaigns. Newitz zeroes in on conflicts over race and intelligence, school board fights over LGBTQ students, and campaigns against feminist viewpoints to show how damaging our cultural storytelling can be. Newitz argues that, in each case, specific groups of Americans are singled out and treated as enemies of the state. Newitz also shares their insights from speaking with the researchers and activists who are pushing against these stories, working toward psychological disarmament and cultural peace. Since #FakeNews isn't a new concept, Newitz believes we can learn from history and build a better story. Annalee Newitz is a journalist and author of science fiction and nonfiction, including the national best-seller Four Lost Cities. They write for the New York Times and New Scientist and co-host the Hugo Award–winning podcast Our Opinions Are Correct. They live in San Francisco. Lindy West is the co-host of the NPR podcast Text Me Back and author of the movie newsletter Butt News. She is a former contributing opinion writer for The New York Times, and is the author of Shit, Actually, the New York Times bestselling memoir Shrill, and the essay collection The Witches Are Coming. Her work has also appeared in This American Life, The Guardian, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Vulture, Jezebel, and others. She is the co-founder of the reproductive rights destigmatization campaign #ShoutYourAbortion. Lindy was a writer and executive producer on Shrill, the Hulu comedy adapted from her memoir. She co-wrote and produced the independent feature film Thin Skin. Buy the Book Stories Are Weapons: Psychological Warfare and the American Mind Third Place Books

Join Native Nevadan and visual artist Nick Larsen in a captivating episode on @kwnk97.7 as he discusses his solo exhibition Old Haunts, Lower Reaches currently featured at the Nevada Museum of Art. Joining him for the interview are two friends from Santa Fe - where Nick currently resides, artwork and podcaster Chelsea Weathers and writer Jenn Shapland (whose latest book Thin Skin is available now at your favorite independent bookstore). In conjunction with the interview, Nick curated an hour-long playlist - I Want to Live on An Abstract Plain - evoking a drive to the Nevada ghost town Rhyolite, the subject of some of the work in Nick's exhibition. Listen to the playlist, HERE. More on Nick Larsen and the exhibition Old Haunts, Lower Reaches (on view Jan 20 - July 7, 2024 at the Nevada Museum of Art): Old Haunts, Lower Reaches is an exhibition of new work by Nick Larsen (b. 1982) that excavates history, possibility, identity, and place. Comprised of layered collage pieces, textile-based architectural models, and image projection, Larsen explores what is present and visible in the desert landscape and, perhaps more importantly, what isn't. Influenced heavily by the artist's experience working for an archaeological firm focused on the Great Basin region, research for Old Haunts, Lower Reaches began when Larsen discovered a fading layer in the history of the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. Rhyolite (located thirty miles from Death Valley National Park) served, at one point, as the proposed site for a planned queer community, Stonewall Park, envisioned by two men from Reno in the 1980s. Contextualized by the history of Rhyolite, Stonewall Park, and his own life, Larsen speculates pasts, presents, and futures for this desert locale. In the words of the artist, “The desert is an environment defined by what it lacks, its bleakness an invitation to project possibilities for both what could have been and what might be on what is often perceived as empty.” Repurposing materials to create his layered collages and sculptures, Larsen's speculative practice also serves as a kind of “making do,” using what is at hand to give form to an invisible history or an unattainable future. Nick Larsen was raised in Northern Nevada and currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Listen in on April 20th at 9am on KWNK 97.7FM to explore how art and music intertwine with Nick Larson.

I recently had a discussion with a patient about topical vitamin A. She was under the impression that you have a limited number of skin cells, and that Vitamin A caused them to "wear out" and would cause thin skin with time. This show talks about how and why vitamin A is beneficial for almost all ages, and how to incorporate it into a healthy skin care plan. Was she right? Or is there more to it? Listen and find out!

The new movie "Thin Skin" follows the life of Ahamefule J. Oluo, a newly divorced father who spends his days working a soul-sucking office job, while at night, he works on what he truly loves: his music. Then, Oluo speaks to his father for the first time in decades, and things take a turn.
This week's episode of Salt Lake Dirt features an in-depth interview with Charles Mudede, director and co-writer of the new film Thin Skin. Charles provides fascinating behind-the-scenes details on the film's inspiration from Ahamefule J. Oluo's off-Broadway show Now I'm Fine, the years-long process of writing and fundraising, and finishing post-production during the pandemic. Great film, great chat! Thanks for listening. Kyler --- Synopsis: Ahamefule Joe Oluo's days are spent at a soul-deadening corporate job and his nights come alive behind a trumpet at Seattle jazz clubs. As he struggles to climb out of the ruins of his broken marriage, Aham has to deal with endless bureaucracy, a boss trying to lead him to the Lord, and his mother who won't cut ties with his ex. Aham is living with his entire family once again in his sister's cramped one bedroom apartment. The one person missing from this living situation is Aham's estranged Nigerian father. His brief reappearance sends the family into a tailspin and a search for meaning. Filmmakers possess the unique ability to immerse us in the lived experiences of others and in so doing, promote kindness, compassion and empathy. Directors Tracy Droz Tragos and Charles Mudede join us to share their newest projects. Tracy's film is called Plan C and it follows a network of courageous women who are working to ensure access to pregnancy terminating medications. Charles directed Thin Skin, a powerful and funny look into the life of musician/comedian Ahamefule Oluo who has never met but lives in the shadow of his Nigerian father.Charles Mudede is a writer, cultural critic and filmmaker whose film is inspired by Oluo's stage play which began as a segment on This American Life. It's the story of a young, bi-racial man in search of himself while grappling with divorce, children, identity, purpose and the heartbreak of displeasing an absent father.Tracy Droz Tragos is an accomplished and award winning documentarian whose film, Plan C documents the heroic work of the women who comprise a grassroots effort to safeguard access to the two-drug treatment known as a medial abortion. The drugs are prescribed legally through telemedicine visits, however access to information about their availability is muzzled. Tracy's hope is that her film will raise awareness. We also discuss the doctors on the frontline, the supportive husbands, the social media shutdowns and messaging workarounds:… a mobile billboard, subway ads and QR code stickers in college restrooms. We then get into legal intrigues like individual state policies, Shield Laws and the Supreme Court's squeeze between two masters… the religious right and big pharma.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Alexandra Pelosi's The Insurrectionist Next Door on Max and Stephen Spielberg's Life on Our Planet on Netflix.Path Points of InterestTracy Droz TragosPlan C Plan C TrailerPlan C on FacebookPlan C on InstagramPlan C on TwitterThe Turnaway StudyThin Skin Thin Skin Screening InformationThink Skin TrailerThin Skin on FacebookCharles Mudede on WikipediaThe Wedding Crasher - This American LifeThe Insurrectionist Next DoorPelosi in The HouseLife on Our Planet - Netflix

Jenn Shapland's first book, My Autobiography of Carson McCullers, was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award and the Southern Book Prize, and it won the 2021 Lambda Literary Award, the Judy Grahn Award, and the Christian Gauss Award. In her new essay collection, Thin Skin, Shapland explores the porousness of boundaries between humans and the environments we inhabit, between us and other people, and between us and the social constructs we create. What does it mean to be sensitive when we live in a toxic environment? How do we navigate the difference between taking responsibility and assuaging our guilt? Between resisting injustice and coping with it? And how do we reckon with what's happening in the world when no one wants to talk about it? Shapland answers these questions and more in this month's episode of Story Behind the Story. Special Guest: Jenn Shapland.

This week, Sam's in Aruba, and despite trying to bring fun and light fare on vacation, he has been unable to break his string of very violent reads, starting with "Recursion," by Blake Crouch, where everyone dies a lot, and which is a lot like "Edge of Tomorrow," a Tom Cruise movie Sam and Hannah both like. Somehow, this triggers a discussion of Sam's in-development sci-fi novel. Then Hannah starts talking about Emma Cline's "The Guest" for no good reason; Cline's a hot new writer and Hannah liked "The Girls," her last novel. Nothing really happens, but it's good. And it leads to a discussion of Sam's issues with "The House in the Cerulean Sea," even though he's not done with it. This leads to a discussion of what exactly a "big gay blanket" is, as a seque into "Lush Lives," by J Vanessa Lyon, the first Roxanne Gay-imprint book (which Hannah sort of forgot she'd talked about before). This causes Sam to remind her that people can have sex without anything being funny about it and be reminded of "Warrior Girl Unearthed." Also not really funny, and definitely violent, is "Essex Dogs," the new historical fiction from history podcaster Dan Jones, which Sam took out of the library. The war reference reminds Hannah of "Thin Skin," the new book of anti-capitalist essays from Jenn Shapland, which sounds awesome, and Sam has researched that these essays are original to the collection and not for anyone else (per instructions).

The Autumn Windbags: The Best Las Vegas Raiders Podcast Ever!
Davante Adams is a Las Vegas Raider! Derek Carr said he would buy Adams a car to get him on the team so what car should he get him? Davante Adams trade from the Green Bay Packers to the Raiders completely changed the wide receiver market in the NFL. Soto walks us through how the DeAndre Hopkins trade from the Houston Texans to the Arizona Cardinals led to Tyreek Hill leaving the Kansas City Chiefs. The Kansas City Chiefs have now lost Tyreek Hill, Tyrann Mathieu (FA), Jarran Reed, CB Charvarius Ward, Mike Remmers, Demarcus Robinson and others. With the team shedding players for cap space, the Windbags discuss if the dynasty is over in Kansas City. The Windbags looked at the ten biggest contracts given out in free agency during the Jon Gruden era. Trent Brown, Tyrell Williams, Lamarcus Joyner, Cory Littleton, Yannick Ngakoue, Carl Nassib, Nick Kwiatkoski, Tahir Whitehead, Marcus Mariota and Jordy Nelson. Gruden was a terrible talent evaluator. The Raiders haven't made any big splashes at offensive line so it looks like the starting line is Kolton Miller, Jon Simpson, Andre James, Denzell Good, Alex Leatherwood and Brandon Parker. It looks like Josh McDaniels and company didn't look at Tom Cable as a good coach and they can coach these guys up. Does Derek Carr have thin skin?
