Note from Jeannine: So, this is a pretty big one for me. In 2020, while my studio was closed, I started manically listening to various podcasts every day looking for motivation and insight. One morning while sitting on the floor of our strength room, I heard the story of The Coffee Bean, as told through Clemson coach, Dabo Sweeney. The origins of that story begin in a jail cell in Texas - with today's guest. Interviewing him and telling him the impact his story had on me was a very cool experience and a reminder to me that my Higher Power is always working in my life...even when I can't see it. Special thank you to Dave from Dopey for connecting me with Damon. Enjoy!Episode description:Today Jeannine interviews Damon West, M.S. Criminal Justice. Damon is a college professor, internationally known keynote speaker and 3 x Wall Street Journal bestselling author. His bestselling business book, The Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change, was listed by Forbes' in the “Top Twenty Books You Need to Read to Crush 2020.”His autobiography, The Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life in Prison Transformed His World, vividly tells how he transformed the pot of boiling water that is a Texas maximum-security prison into a pot of coffee. At 20 years old, he was a Division 1 starting quarterback at the University of North Texas, when he suffered a career ending injury. He turned to hardcore drugs to cope with disappointments of life. After graduation, he worked in the United States Congress, was a national fundraiser on a U.S. Presidential campaign and eventually trained to be a stockbroker for United Bank of Switzerland (UBS). One day at UBS, he was introduced to methamphetamines; he became instantly hooked—and the lives of so many innocent people would forever be changed by the choices he made in order to feed his insatiable meth habit. After a fateful discussion during his incarceration with a seasoned convict, Damon had a spiritual awakening. He learned that, like a coffee bean changing with the application of heat and pressure, he was capable of changing the environment around him. Armed with a program of recovery, a renewed faith, and a miraculous second chance at life, Damon emerged from over seven years of prison a changed man. His story of redemption, grit and determination continues to inspire audiences today.Damon shares his story of how his first use of meth escalated into homelessness in 18 months, including all manner of tweaker hijinks, including a mail man hustle and stealing a car from the Texas Rangers police impound. We talk recovery, resentments, rebuilding after incarceration and never letting dreams die.  In The Age of Insecurity, Astra Taylor traces the historical roots of capitalism's reliance on fear and debt, arguing that insecurity is not a flaw but a feature of the system. Drawing on history, myth, and activism, she reveals how confronting our vulnerabilities can become a collective source of power.Stay informed and engaged! Don't miss out on our captivating weekly episodes that dive deep into the heart of our economy, culture, and politics from the past to the present. Please hit the podcast subscribe button if you've yet to subscribe.[Original Release Date:  December 18, 2023] Description:  Can we turn our insecurity into power? Consumer debt stands at $17.29 trillion and many Americans are drowning in debt, with the average household owning over $100 thousand. The climate crisis, threats to democracy, and global wars add more worry to our already stressful lives. In her new book out from House of Anansi Press, “The Age of Insecurity: Coming Together as Things Fall Apart”, writer, filmmaker, organizer, and the 2023 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Massey Lecturer, Astra Taylor uses mythology. psychology and the history of capitalism to break down the different kinds of insecurities we face, and explore how our insecurities help capitalism flourish. Without it, the system would cease to function, she says. In her years of work as Co-Founder of the Debt Collective, which emerged from Occupy Wall Street, Taylor has used debt as a tool for bringing people together and organizing. She is the author of The Age of Insecurity: Coming Together as Things Fall Apart, Democracy May Not Exist But We'll Miss It When It is Gone, and The People's Platform (winner of the American Book Award), and the director of What Is Democracy?, among other books and films. In this wide-ranging discussion, Astra Taylor and Laura Flanders discuss the history of capitalism, the rights of debtors, and what we can do to lessen insecurity and expand security both as individuals and as a society. All that, plus a commentary from Laura about language and disruption..“There is a debate here about motivation and what motivates us, and we are constantly being told that if people are too secure, that society's going to collapse and that we can't afford to invest in other folks. And I really want to challenge that idea.” - Astra Taylor“. . . When you start talking about [debt] with others, you realize you're actually in the same boat and you start coming together to demand change, to demand debt cancellation, to demand the provision of these public goods. Debt actually can become a source of power.” - Astra TaylorGuest:  Astra Taylor, Co-Founder of the Debt Collective & Author, The Age of Insecurity*(*Bookshop is an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores. A Note from James:Oh my gosh. This guy was thrown in jail for 65 years—and he deserved it. You'll hear about his crimes and misdemeanors. He started as a superstar quarterback, high school and college hero turned meth addict, and eventually became a hardcore RICO gang criminal. Sentenced to essentially life in prison, Damon's story is genuinely one of the most inspirational I've heard. He's got a bunch of books out—his latest, Six Dimes and a Nickel: Life Lessons to Empower Change, just came out and refers to the 65-year sentence he received. You need to read this book, which follows his memoir The Change Agent and The Coffee Bean, teaching a simple yet profound lesson about creating positive change. I could have talked to Damon forever about jail, prison fights, criminal life, meth addiction, and most importantly, the transformation that changed everything. By the way, this conversation will change your life, too—I really took a lot from his insights.Episode Description:Damon West was handed a 65-year prison sentence, effectively life behind bars, after spiraling from a promising college quarterback into meth addiction and becoming the leader of a burglary ring. This episode covers the dramatic highs and devastating lows of his journey, from his arrest and brutal introduction to prison violence to his profound transformation inspired by the "coffee bean" metaphor. James and Damon discuss deeply personal stories about addiction, identity, and redemption, offering listeners unique perspectives on overcoming profound adversity and using pain as a catalyst for extraordinary personal growth. What You'll Learn:How identity can become an addiction, and strategies to rebuild after losing itThe "coffee bean" metaphor and how it can help you transform difficult situations into opportunitiesSpecific ways Damon earned respect and survived brutal prison conditions without joining a gangPractical insights from the 12-step recovery program applicable to anyone facing challenging circumstancesHow forgiveness and accountability can become powerful tools for personal changeTimestamped Chapters:[00:00] Introduction to Damon's Story[01:27] Damon's Early Life and Downfall[02:40] Life of Crime and Addiction[17:02] The Arrest and Trial[29:06] The Verdict: 65 Years in Prison[30:25] A Mother's Ultimatum[31:06] Advice from Muhammad[32:19] Surviving Prison Fights[39:33] The Coffee Bean Story[41:38] First Day in Maximum Security[49:00] Earning Respect on the Rec Yard[51:08] Spiritual Awakening and Self-Improvement[55:38] Understanding the Eighth and Ninth Steps[56:31] Living Amends: A Path to Redemption[58:49] The Impact of Crime and Seeking Forgiveness[1:03:56] The Power of Forgiveness[1:10:29] Lessons from Prison: Servant Leadership and Community[1:15:41] The Journey to Freedom and Beyond[1:18:02] The Coffee Bean Message: From Prison to Global Impact[1:24:54] Final Thoughts and ReflectionsAdditional Resources:Six Dimes and a Nickel: Life Lessons to Empower Change by Damon WestThe Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life Transformed His World by Damon WestThe Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change by Damon West and Jon GordonAlcoholics Anonymous: 12-Step Recovery ProgramSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How does your work integrate with your overall purpose and your passion projects? Is it possible to have both — and to use them both to make a difference in the world? Even after retirement from a successful career, our guest this week has been able to answer a resounding “yes” to those questions.    Bert Waugh Jr. and his wife, Susy, began taking street youth into their home in the 1970s. In 1991, Waugh founded Transitional Youth, a nonprofit organization that provides housing, outreach, and support to young people who otherwise would be living on the streets.    Tune into the full conversation — as part of our holiday “giving back” episodes — for more on how Bert got started with helping kids transition from living on the streets, what makes his organization different from others, why his focus is on youth mostly in the 18-24 age category, what others can do to help youth in need, and more.   Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn:    How Bert got his start with helping youth who have spent time on the streets, and how that informed the beginning of his organization, Transitional Youth Why the 18-24 age group is so particularly vulnerable compared to other age groups — and why Bert feels so passionate about helping them  How Bert's organization infuses more love throughout its work  The role of drug testing — and second chances — within the Transitional Youth organization How Bert measures success at his nonprofit, and why thinking “one at a time” can be so helpful How Bert celebrated his 80th birthday in a unique way What made Bert want to continue working and making a difference, even after he retired from a successful career Bert's experience after 2007-08 — and how he almost lost everything   Resources Mentioned in This Episode:  Transitional Youth website Bert Waugh on LinkedIn “The Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change” by Jon Gordon and Damon West Buy a copy of “Lost at CEO: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Strategy” by Carl J. In this episode, we're working on our element of Resilience and exploring the third "Root of Resilience" known as aligning with nature. The Roots of Resilience were laid out in one of Dr. Emmons book, "The Chemistry of Calm." This root builds on our last one ("managing energy") by embracing the cycles and rhythms that are part of a much bigger system. This may seem "woo-woo," but.. well, it's not. Like all mammals and really every other living thing, we are influenced by cycles around us. A growing field of study known as chronobiology is bringing more scientific understanding to these cycles (for example: seasonal affective disorder and seasonal mood shifts). We'll talk more about this root and how increasing awareness of your connection with nature and adding some simple skills in response to this connection can support your mood, energy, and resilience in really powerful ways. The world is divided against itself. So divided in fact, that the implications have the potential to be the tragedy of all time. Valuing the individual above all else is the result of human conditioning and not human nature. This is how it is but not how it could be. Each person taking small steps equals positive change to support survival on our planet. The idea is to be an active participant. Join us for ideas on getting motivated and inspired, not to get grandiose, but to be open and explore how the energy, money, and ideas you put into the world make all the difference.   It is important to make the connection that protecting our families makes it necessary to support the most destitute parts of the world to help themselves. To have opportunities to work makes terrorism and alienation less likely and unity more available. Skepticism is encouraged. Be deeply skeptical and then challenge yourself to use it to accept that our whole planet is endangered. Being a part of the change is utterly possible. The world is likely on the verge of dying or being born in a way that fosters connection, using our intelligence and wisdom. Every one of us is the one that is important to make these small changes. If enough of us can change our attitudes, we are so interconnected it will be a quantum leap. Listen for ideas on how to get started today, it's easier than you think.   Read the transcription and listen to this episode on The Global Bridge Foundation website

DarkHorseSchooling.com/podcast This episode is about how to use affirmations to help achieve success in the business world. The host, Tracy Brinkmann, is an experienced entrepreneur and coach who started the Dark Horse Entrepreneur Podcast to help entrepreneurs, coaches, and course creators battle technology overwhelmed procrastination and imposter syndrome. Tracy believes that driven entrepreneurs and those looking to start, restart, or Kickstart their business need to level up their marketing skills and take action in order to build their business into the empire it deserves to be. However, Tracy acknowledges that along the way, entrepreneurs will hit walls and will have to decide how to proceed in order to get past the obstacle. Tracy concludes by offering three secret steps plus a bonus secret to make affirmations into declarations of achievement.   Tracy is giving three tips and one secret to make affirmations work effectively. The tips are to state the affirmations in the present tense, to believe in what you are saying, and to make them personal and specific. The secret is a tool for those who are uncomfortable reading the affirmations out loud which works every time. Affirmations are positive statements that focus on what you want to achieve and feel in your life and by stating them in the present tense and believing in them, they can help align your body and mind with the desired outcomes.   Affirmations can be a powerful tool to create positive change in your life, but they are not a substitute for action. To make affirmations work effectively, you need to focus on three things. First, make sure the affirmation is stated in the present tense. Second, believe in the truth of the affirmation. Third, take action towards the goal. To reinforce the power of your affirmations, repeat them often and focus on the positive feelings they evoke. Taking action is key to making affirmations work as it brings them to life.   Affirmations are a great tool for helping us manifest our desired outcomes, but it is important to craft them in the present tense. This is because our subconscious mind operates in the now, and is more receptive to suggestions that are framed in the present. Affirmations should be stated as if the desired outcome has already happened or is currently happening, for example, instead of saying I will be successful say I am successful. It is also important to believe in the affirmation and its possibility, as this will send a signal to your subconscious mind that it is something that is important to you and that you are committed to making it happen.   TIMESTAMPS 0:00:00   "Unlock the Secret to Making Affirmations Work: 3 Steps Plus a Bonus Secret" 0:02:37   "Using Affirmations to Achieve Your Goals" 0:04:59   Using Affirmations to Create Positive Change in Your Life 0:06:30   "The Power of Present Tense Affirmations: How to Make Them Work Effectively" 0:11:42   "The Power of Affirmations and Visualization: Strengthening Your Beliefs" 0:13:11   "The Power of Affirmations: How to Make Them Work for You" 0:18:08   Heading: Making Affirmations Work Effectively for Business Success 0:20:10   Conversation on the Power of Affirmations for Entrepreneurs 0:22:20   "Using Affirmations to Achieve Your Goals: A Step-by-Step Guide" 0:26:05   Episode Summary: Affirmations and Subscriber Ratings   HIGHLIGHTS So his coach and his infinite wisdom patiently explained the three steps I just explained to you to making affirmations work effectively, stating, affirmations need to be in the president. You got to believe in what you're saying. You got to take some action. And then the entrepreneur getting this information from his coach was excited to put these steps into practice and boost their chances of success in business.. But as the discussion continued, the entrepreneur couldn't help but think of their business goals. They're like, wait a minute. I can use affirmations to make my business successful. Of course you can, the coach replied. You can create affirmations that focus on specific business goals, like increasing sales, increasing customer loyalty, and expanding your customer base. This isn't always about right how fat you are, how tall you are, how confident you are.   So by staying open and flexible, you can take advantage of these opportunities and bring your affirmations to life, right? It's like a it's like J. R. Tolkien when he put pen in the paper and he brought all those characters in The Hobbit to life, not just up on the silver screen that we see nowadays, but if you've ever read the book, right? Those were his affirmations. He brought them to life. So what I'm saying, in summary, is that taking action is a critical component to making affirmations work effectively.   These actions help to reinforce the belief and the truth of your affirmation that you are healthy and fit. And it makes it far more likely that you will see the results that you're looking for. Now, it's also important that you stay open to the opportunities that will arise. Because now your brain is saying, okay, this is important to you. You're paying attention to it, and you're taking action to it. So opportunities that are going to arise as you work toward your goals, sometimes the universe and its infinite intelligence will present you with an unexpected opportunity that can help you to achieve your desires far more quickly, way easier than you ever thought possible.   Now, taking action doesn't necessarily mean taking those giant leaps towards your goals. It could even mean making those small daily changes, little tweaks to your daily routine that align the direction you're taking and the actions you're taking every single day to your desired outcome. Or it could help you in taking consistent steps towards your goal every single day. The important thing is to be proactive in moving towards your desired outcome.. Now, of course, you need to know what that desired outcome is, and I spent quite a bit of time talking about that. Oh, gosh way back in episode 176, the IChart Method of Goal Setting. And then episode 398, the I Chart Method for goal Setting and achievement. So I give it to you twice, a little differently each time. So go back and check those out. I don't want to belabor that particular topic again and make this episode an hour and a half long, but you get my point.   When you believe in your affirmation, you're sending that signal back up to your subconscious mind. That amazing tool between your ears that this is something that is important to you and that you're not only committed to making it happen, but you desire to make it happen. As a result, your subconscious mind is going to work to align your thoughts, your beliefs, and your behaviors. Let me say that again.. Your thoughts, your beliefs, and your behaviors with the affirmation making it more likely to come into your life. You're going to start seeing things that you probably hadn't paid attention to before. You're going to start believing things that maybe you doubted before, and you're going to start doing things maybe you hadn't done. On the other hand, if you don't believe in the truth of the affirmation, it's this to be honest, this is not. Your subconscious mind is going to be less likely to even respond to it. And maybe that's why you're still listening to this about twelve minutes in.

Sentenced to sixty-five years in a Texas prison, Damon West once had it all. Damon West, M.S. Criminal Justice, is a college professor, nationally known keynote speaker and best-selling author (with best-selling author and motivational speaker Jon Gordon) of The Coffee Bean: A simple Lesson to Create Positive Change. His first book and autobiography, The Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life in Prison Transformed His World, was published just three years after his release from a Texas maximum-security prison. At 20 years old, he was a Division 1 starting quarterback at the University of North Texas, when he suffered a career ending injury. He turned to hard core drugs to cope with the disappointments of life. After graduation, he worked in the United States Congress, was a national fundraiser on a U.S. Presidential campaign and eventually trained to be a stock-broker for United Bank of Switzerland (UBS). His story of redemption, grit and determination continues to inspire audiences. today. Today, Damon lives a life of recovery and service, going to meetings and sharing his story all over the country with schools, churches, athletic teams, corporations, conferences and inside correctional facilities. Over the past few years, he has been sharing the Coffee Bean lesson with dozens of college football teams such as Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas, and countless schools and businesses. His #BeACoffeeBean message has inspired thousands from Walmart to the US Army to the NBA. Damon's story has been featured both nationally and globally. His second book, The Coffee Bean, co-authored with best-selling author Jon Gordon, became an instant best-seller and a part of Forbes' “Top Twenty Books You Need to Read to Crush 2020.” Damon is passionate about the Coffee Bean message and loves sharing how it changed his life and how it can change yours, too. His latest book (with coauthor, Jon Gordon), The Coffee Bean for Kids, is the genesis for Coffee Bean Clubs being started by students at schools all over America. Of all the hats Damon wears, the two most important to him are being a husband to Kendell and a stepfather to Clara. One of his greatest fears upon re-entry was wondering if he would be able to find someone who found him worthy of love and a family of his own. Like most fears we all have in life, this one was unfounded. To View This Episode- https://youtu.be/LIWN5iHgVnM #DamonWest #Coffeebean #whoknewinthemoment #podcast

This week's show is quite possibly the most incredible story I've ever heard. You are going to be riveted and you will never forget this conversation!13 years ago to the day that we recorded this interview, my guest was sentenced to life in prison! Yes, life in prison for my guest Damon West.Damon's story will make you uncomfortable at times. But ultimately, his story is all about OVERCOMING EXTREME ADVERSITY, TRANSFORMATION, and REDEMPTION.Do you want to learn how to turn your life around? This interview Is a master class! At 20, Damon was the starting quarterback at the University of North Texas when he suffered a career-ending injury. A few years later while training to be a stockbroker, Damon got hooked on methamphetamines, and he became the mastermind of a burglary ring to support his addiction.  Eventually, he was arrested and sentenced to 65 years in a Texas maximum security prison. In prison, Damon got SOBER, went through a SPIRITUAL AWAKENING, and started down his true life's calling which he continued to build on after his parole more than 7 years later.Today he is a much sought-after speaker and best-selling author including co-writing “The Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change.” with JON GORDON.Damon pulls no punches in a series of brutally HONEST stories when sharing his life and the mistakes he's made. You'll hear first-hand exactly what it feels like to be found guilty of major crimes, how he fought to survive and eventually THRIVE in prison, and how Damon turned his time in prison into an OPPORTUNITY.Be sure to listen to how he used the analogy of being like a COFFEE BEAN (yes, a coffee bean) as a critical part in changing his victim mindset to one of HOPE and redemption. In one of my favorite parts of this episode, Damon reveals his thoughts about GRATITUDE, his mission to HELP OTHERS, and why RESILIENCE is essential to living your best life. This week, pay attention to a man who has lived life on the edge in many ways, good and bad.   Damon's past and present are filled with LESSONS that will make you STOP, THINK, and help you FIGURE OUT how you can lead a better life, too.
