This week, I spoke with Dr Deborah Ward about the consequences of basing our self-worth on financial success. I was interested in this topic because I wanted to understand why some people place so much importance on financial success compared with others. I learned from Dr Ward that it's because some people derive their sense of self-worth from how financially successful they are. We also discussed what to do if you're someone like that.Besides the topic of deriving self-worth from financial success, Dr Ward also shares her insights and experiences about why she decided to pursue a career in academia and what you'll need to be aware of if you're considering going into academia. We talked about the key to success for a career in research, like the need for collaboration, of finding good mentors, how to view failure differently, and the tenacity, independence and balance needed to thrive. Dr. Deborah Ward recently graduated with her Ph.D. in Social-Personality Psychology from University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. She earned her B.A. in Liberal Arts from Muhlenberg College, where she double majored in Psychology and Russian Studies, and her M.S. in Psychology from Villanova University. Currently, Dr. Ward is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Saginaw Valley State University.Broadly, Dr. Ward studies topics related to identity threat. People are susceptible to identity-threat when they receive negative feedback related to important aspects of the self (e.g., competence, appearance). Much of her work revolves around the consequences of basing self-worth on financial success. More recently, she has applied this work to academic contexts with the goal of understanding how to identify circumstances – in the classroom or university-wide – that could threaten students' self-esteem or self-efficacy, and potentially discourage them from meeting or pursuing academic goals. Dr. Ward has also conducted research on numerous other topics, including romantic relationships, economic inequality, cultural norms, and coping with stressors.I'm grateful to Dr Ward for sharing her perspective, wisdom and insights from her work and her own journey and I know you'll enjoy this one!You can connect with Dr Ward through email at deward@svsu.edu

Her research interests include examining psychological and physiological sexual responses and the stimulus cues that trigger sexual arousal and desire, with a focus on understanding the sociocultural factors that affect sexual response and sexual functioning in queer, trans, Black, Indigenous and other people of colour (QTBIPOC). She is also keenly interested in researching sex- and gender-based violence and sexual violence trauma. For her thesis, she is examining racialized sexual attractions and sexual responses when viewing race congruent and incongruent sexual stimuli (i.e., sexual images and videos depicting people of the same- or a difference race from the viewer). Outside of academia, she enjoys playing video games, D&D (Dungeons and Dragons), reading comic books and manga, watching anime (and too many shows on Netflix). Your Personality Could Determine the Ads You See Online (0:34)Guest: Sandra Matz is an Assistant Professor of Management and Organizational Behavior at Columbia Business SchoolEverywhere we click online right now, we're being bombarded with holiday ads. What if, just based on your public movements on social media and other websites, a company could figure out if you're an introvert or extrovert? And then, serve up ads that have been fined-tuned to appeal to your personality? Our wallets are doomed. (Originally aired June 10, 2019).  Your Cat Might Actually Love You Back (20:58)Guest: Kristyn Vitale, PhD, Researcher at Oregon State University's Human/Animal Interaction Lab Dogs have a reputation for being social and smart and helpful. Cats, on the other hand, are aloof and only interested in humans as a source of food. But research being done by Kristyn Vitale at Oregon State University's Human/Animal Interaction Lab suggests those stereotypes are wrong. Cats are social. Many seek out interaction with humans. And –get this –they can be trained. (Originally aired December 13, 2018). Prejudice Toward People with Disabilities (36:25)Guest: William Chopik, Assistant Professor of Social/Personality Psychology, Michigan State UniversityIt's been almost 30 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act became law, and a lot has changed in that time. Most public places have handicapped parking and wheelchair accessibility. Schools and jobs are more accommodating. But have our attitudes changed? Recent research suggests we may have actually taken a step backward in that area. (Originally aired August 12, 2019).  History of Native American Enslavement (51:17)Guest: Andres Resendez, PhD, Professor of History, University of California, DavisThe story of African slavery in America is well known. Less told in the history books –and often not at all in school classrooms –is the story of Native American enslavement. Usually we learn that diseases brought over by European explorers and colonists are to blame for nearly wiping out indigenous communities. But the enslavement of Native Americans played an equal role, according to historian Andres Resendez. His book, “The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America” won the Bancroft Prize for History in 2017. Resendez is a professor at the University of California, Davis and he joined us in studio last year. Aired: 8/12/13 This week we’re going to talk about happiness. So let’s start with a true-false test. I’ll tell you a supposed fact about happiness, and you decide whether you think it’s true or false. 1. Unexpected pleasures are the most rewarding. True or false? 2. Novelty in a relationship has similar effects on our brain as a high from drugs. True or false? 3. Daily hassles impact our well-being more than major life events. True or false? 4. When it comes to sex, women require more novelty than men. True or false? 5. The genes that underlie who gets divorced are passed down from parents to children. True or false? 6. A smoking habit is not a bigger risk factor for heart disease as a troubled marriage. True or false? 7. Renters are happier than homeowners. True or false? Okay, let’s see how you did…It turns out, according to today’s guest, all seven statements are true. Yup, renters are happier and women want more novelty in sex than men. Where do I get off making those assertions? All based in science. Today’s guest, SONJA LYUBOMIRSKY, Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside, is one of the nation’s top students of happiness, and we’re going to talk today about the findings in her new book, THE MYTHS OF HAPPINESS: What Should Make You Happy, but Doesn’t; What Shouldn’t Make You Happy, but Does. Originally from Russia, SONJA LYUBOMIRSKY received her A.B., summa cum laude, from Harvard University and her Ph.D. in Social/Personality Psychology from Stanford University. Not too shabby. Her research has been awarded a Templeton Positive Psychology Prize, a Science of Generosity grant, a John Templeton Foundation grant, and a million-dollar grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to conduct research on the possibility of permanently increasing happiness. She is author of The How of Happiness, translated and published in 19 countries, and her newest, THE MYTHS OF HAPPINESS.
