We take to the road for this week's Young Stock Podcast as Sarah McIntosh attends the Teagasc/FBD student of the year award ceremony. The awards, sponsored by FBD, were presented to the top graduates of Teagasc Level 6 agriculture, horticulture, equine and forestry training programmes in 2024. With 4,000 students across the Teagasc college campuses, it was a great opportunity to meet the top of the crop students, who took home prizes on the day. Each finalist was nominated by their teacher and Teagasc college faculty and selected from a judging panel. On the day Kate Curran, who is no stranger to the Young Stock Podcast, was awarded the overall title of Teagasc/FBD student of the year for 2024. We get the first interview with Kate as the shock of winning the award sets in and she outlines what it means to her. We also hear from Danny Doyle, who took home the title last year as he fills us in on what he has been up to over the last year while giving advice to this year's winner. Thomas O'Connor from Tralee, Co Kerry, who took home the winning title for the full-time agriculture category speaks to us about his educational pathway and why he decided to attend a Teagasc course. Tipperary native Niamh Duggan, Carrick-on-Suir, took home the award for the full-time other land-based enterprises category. She speaks about progressing onto the Level 8 degree in South East Technological University and what her plans are for the summer months. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

South East Technological University (SETU), in collaboration with Carlow County Council and Carlow Community Enterprise Centres CLG, has launched Station House, a new rural innovation hub in Hacketstown, County Carlow. The initiative is part of SETU's TU RISE programme, designed to strengthen regional enterprise by connecting businesses with university expertise and support. As the only university in the region, SETU is committed to driving research and innovation that delivers real impact. Station House is the first of four rural innovation hubs being developed under TU RISE, creating dedicated spaces for enterprise owners to engage with SETU and its partners. The hub will provide opportunities to develop key skills in areas such as innovation, digitalisation, succession planning, and sustainability. Brian Ogilvie, Head of Entrepreneurship and Rural Engagement at SETU, said: "This initiative offers business owners outside of the main urban areas access to SETU's expertise and support. The hub will play an instrumental role in empowering the area, equipping it with the necessary tools and skills for sustainable growth. SETU is committed to working with industry, ensuring that regional businesses can leverage cutting-edge research and enterprise support to help grow their business." By bringing together university resources, partner organisations, and the expertise of local business owners, Station House will serve as a key asset to the local community. Professor Marie Claire Van Hout, Vice President for Research, Innovation and Impact at SETU, highlighted the hub's role in supporting economic growth: "This endeavour aligns with SETU's mission to drive progress, nurture economic growth, and elevate the competitiveness of the region. Station House is the first of four rural-based hubs which SETU is developing under the TU-RISE initiative in the South East region. SETU's experience in fostering rural innovation has shown that these hubs are more than just spaces; they are catalysts for economic growth, equipping micro, small, and medium enterprises with the skills, technology, and networks needed to compete in an increasingly fast-paced global economy." Station House has been developed through a partnership approach, bringing together key stakeholders to support rural enterprise. Coilín O'Reilly, Chief Executive of Carlow County Council, said: "Enterprise spaces and rural hubs are crucial for fostering entrepreneurship and economic resilience. Carlow County Council is proud to deliver this project in partnership with Carlow Community Enterprise Centres CLG, with funding from the Town & Village Renewal Scheme. This investment has also enabled an exciting collaboration with TU RISE at South East Technological University, strengthening the support ecosystem for enterprise development. Station House is a flagship example of how strategic partnerships can drive meaningful opportunities for rural communities, ensuring businesses have the space, resources, and support to start, scale, and succeed." SETU encourages business owners to take advantage of the opportunities available through Station House and the broader TU RISE initiative. SETU TU RISE is co-financed by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-27. Fianna Fáil MEP Claims Government Won't Reach Housing Targets Without Serious Reform

An Ireland South MEP has cast doubt over the Government's ability to achieve its housing targets in 2025, due to what he's described as a failure to address infrastructural challenges. It follows a recent briefing paper issued by key construction industry stakeholders, which stated that as a result of zoned land shortages, "it is not physically possible to construct 50,000 houses per year". Government formation talks are continuing today between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, with members of the Regional Independents Group, as well as Independent TDs Michael and Danny Healy-Rae set to receive formal invitations to attend in the coming days. While both parties have committed to building 300,000 homes by 2030, a document published by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association, Water Services Operators Group, Construction Industry Federation and the Irish Home Builders Association has cast doubt on the viability of this pledge. It's stated that it's not "physically possible" to construct this volume of homes as Ireland is running out of zoned land for new houses that's serviced with water and wastewater infrastructure. The result of this, it's claimed, will be the outward flow of foreign direct investment from Ireland. Fianna Fáil MEP for the Ireland South Constituency, Billy Kelleher insists the planning process must be streamlined in order to bring about the required infrastructure. Signed into law in October, the Planning and Development Bill has been described as an attempt to consolidate Irish planning law into a single piece of legislation and was dubbed by Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien as the "most significant reform in planning legislation since 2000". Following the vote on the bill, Sinn Féin accused the Government of rushing its final stages. Clare architect and lecturer at South East Technological University, Garry Miley claims Ireland's planning system remains "arcane" and "medieval," but doesn't believe "throwing more legislation" at the problem is the answer.

Researchers from MTU's Sustainable Infrastructure Research and Innovation Group (SIRIG) will take part in a groundbreaking, multi-million euro project that aims to reduce dependency on fossil-based fertiliser imports through the increased use of Recycling Derived Fertilisers (RDFs). The ReNu2Cycle project will examine impacts on availability, ecological footprint, supply chain and price stability via the use of recycled Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium fertiliser from municipal, industrial, agricultural, food, business waste and other agricultural sources. The project is funded through the Interreg North-West Europe programme with a total project value of €4.9 million, with €3.0 million sourced from the European Regional Development Fund. MTU's role in this ambitious project encompasses stakeholder and sustainability engagement, developing a comprehensive life cycle assessment, and creating an inventory of recycling-derived fertilisers, as well as an array of other research activities in collaboration with ReNu2Cycle's project partners. This will build on the achievements of the ReNu2Farm project (2017 to 2023), which provided basic & regional quantified fertiliser demand research. The project will look to adapt regional best practices for North West Europe (NWE) through the innovative use of living lab concepts across all aspects of the project's research, ensuring long-term co-innovation & implementation support will be stimulated and encouraged. Future RDF use will be maximised by creating innovative fertiliser blends & business solutions for producers' portfolios, including sustainability assessment. RDFs will be blended, prototyped & demonstrated on farms within the project's regions using the Living Lab methodology to assess their suitability for NWE-wide adoption by farmers. All results will be capitalised in one transregional nutrient supply-demand strategy and regional action plans to empower individuals, regions, and countries to grow the bioeconomy and maximise the use of recycled fertilisers. Resource owners, fertiliser producers, traders & farming communities will benefit from this strategy and the latest EU policies allow a harmonised RDF market trade in NWE, contributing further to NWE food supply security. Within Ireland, Munster Technological University is joined by South East Technological University, University of Limerick and Teagasc along with project partners from across the NWE region within the education, research and governance sectors. Dr Niamh Power, who is leading ReNu2Cycle's research for Munster Technological University, said, "With more focus than ever on sustainable agriculture, recycling derived fertilisers can play their part in reducing the impact of the farming sector while contributing to food security. RDFs are the future."

South East Technological University's (SETU) Women in Technology event opened a world of possibilities to over 1,000 female second-level students from across the south east region, considering a career in the tech industry. Sponsored by Red Hat, the fourth annual event held at SETU Arena served as a platform to promote the vital role of women in technology, break down barriers, and highlight the accomplishments of women in the field. Through a series of engaging talks by industry leaders and top speakers, attendees gained valuable insights into potential career paths and opportunities within the technological landscape. The event was supported by over 30 companies from the region, who engaged with students and their teachers about the variety of opportunities and careers in their organisations and the pathways to get there, along with the flexible working environment and great pay. SETU lecturers were also on hand to guide students about available courses across the University's Waterford and Carlow campuses. Kathryn Kiely, Vice President for External Affairs at SETU, outlined the wonderful opportunities that a career in technology provides in terms of opportunity, travel, flexibility, and salary. Speaking about the importance of the event, Ms Kiely, said, "From SETU's perspective it is vital to promote the opportunities that exist for women in technology. This year we hosted over 1,000 students from right across the region who learned about the multiple opportunities that exist within the global companies based in the south east. These companies have supported us in promoting diversity and equality of opportunity and inspiring young girls to consider science and technology as a career." Guest speakers shared inspiring stories of their career journeys, demonstrating the diverse pathways to success within the tech industry. Travel blogger and entrepreneur Stephanie Barry-Woods, who has a huge online following through her "stephmylife" social channel, described how her Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BIS) degree paved the way for her to travel the world while working remotely and providing the perfect work-life balance. Irish International athlete and Olympian Phil Healy from Sun Life described how a career in computing helps her to balance her busy athletic schedule, facilitating her to represent Ireland on the world stage. Emily Watson from Servier outlined how her degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering facilitated her to become Head of Performance and the wonderful opportunities it has presented her with in her career so far. Deborah Threadgold, Managing Director of IBM Ireland gave an insightful and interesting talk on her career journey, outlining the different paths she took, and the lessons learned along the way. Reflecting on the event, Ms Threadgold said, "It is inspiring to walk into a room and have so many young women present that could thread a path into a previously male-dominated industry. For them, it was important to look at the stage and see all sorts of women from different backgrounds who found their way into technology and are passionate about it. This is an industry that has 25-29% females. Diversity brings innovation, and innovation brings success. What SETU and Red Hat have achieved in bringing the girls together, opening their eyes, and giving them a vision for the future is hugely important." Rachel Lawton, Senior Software Engineer at Red Hat, who also delivered an inspiring speech, said, "At RedHat, we are passionate about inspiring young women and were delighted to sponsor the event. We actively try to encourage women into the tech industry and STEM in general." Encouraging aspiring women in tech, Ms Lawton said, "Unfortunately, some young girls don't think they can work in the tech industry, but my advice to anyone with a small inkling to do so is to remember that stereotypical barriers don't exist. Studying tech courses in college gives you a passport to the world. There's su...

South East Technological University (SETU) has secured €9.9m in funding for over 2,000 places on 27 upskilling and reskilling courses for adult learners under the Government's Springboard+ programme over the next three years. Springboard+ offers free or 90% funded courses in areas of high skills needs including business, computing, engineering, science and hospitality and range from level 6 to postgraduate level. Courses are typically up to one year and are open to employees, self-employed and previously self-employed people, job seekers and people returning to the workforce. South East Technological University Incoming SETU President Prof Veronica Campbell warmly welcomed the announcement. “We are delighted with the Springboard+ funding for SETU, almost €10m over the next three years. We will deliver 27 specialist programmes in areas of high skills need including construction, computing, digital skills, hospitality, supply chain and regulatory affairs to name but some of the courses on offer. This level of support for individuals and enterprises across the south-east is a key factor in ensuring our region remains competitive, attracts inward investment and plays a critical role in upskilling and re-skilling our workforce for the future.” SETU will deliver Springboard+ courses at its campuses across the southeast in Carlow, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow as well as some fully online and many blended options. A full listing with location information and online application is available at www.springboardcourses.ie. Neil Quinlan, Head of the Department of Lifelong Learning at SETU Waterford says that there is great interest in Springboard courses this year. “Springboard+ courses are designed to allow people to re-boot their career through significant upskilling within one year or less or two years in the case of some ICT courses. Courses are fully funded for the unemployed, previously self-employed and people returning to the workplace. For employed people level 6 Springboard courses are free and Level 7 to 9 Springboard courses are 90% funded.” According to Dr Joseph Collins, Head of Faculty of Lifelong Learning at SETU Carlow, each programme has been designed in response to the current and future needs of industry and presents a unique opportunity for learners to avail of free or heavily subsidised upskilling or reskilling. “Workforce practices are changing significantly due to technological advances. Our Springboard funded courses are purposely designed to develop the skills and competencies of participants to ensure they have the skills required for the future needs of the regional, national and international economy. Springboard+ reduces the financial barriers to accessing higher education and allows participants and employers access to flexible and industry specific courses.” SETU will run Springboard open events, both online and on-site on all campuses across the summer with event details available at www.setu.ie. Springboard+ is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union.
