This week, Matt and I welcome Nichole Vatcher—cohost of the brilliant podcast Nevermind the Music—for a deep dive into Gary Jules' haunting 2001 cover of “Mad World.” Originally a minor hit for a young Tears for Fears, the song took on a whole new life thanks to its stripped-down piano arrangement and its eerie, unforgettable appearance in Donnie Darko. We talk about its emotional weight, how it became a surprise Christmas #1 in the UK, and whether more credit should go to Gary Jules or his collaborator Michael Andrews. We also take a look at the rest of Jules' career and try to determine whether this quietly powerful ballad is thunder… or just rumble in the distance. Of all the ways to change the world, power is the most tempting and love is the most powerful. But there is another way that is both loving and powerful, and totally unexpected. This past week at Storyline's Gathering we will considered this in the most surprising way. The band performed songs by Roy Orbison, Lana Del Rey, Lauren Daigle and Gary Jules. We hope to see you next Sunday at 10:30 at St. Joe High School's auditorium.
"I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take, when people run in circles, it's a very, very mad world, mad world.” This line, from the song "Mad World" sung by Gary Jules (originally a Tears for Fears song), is a fitting one for the book of Ecclesiastes, and particularly chapter 4. In this chapter, as Douglas O'Donnell helps to point out, the Preacher notices four disquieting features of our world: oppression, envy, loneliness, and impermanence. And while he gives us a few helpful ways of dealing with our world, this chapter leaves us longing for a new world in which these things no longer exist. April 30, 2023 Helpful resources that shaped and influenced this sermon: Ecclesiastes by Derek Kidner, Ecclesiastes by Douglas O'Donnell, Ecclesiastes by Phil Ryken. 3 of 4 headings from O'Donnell.
VYS0019 – It's a Very, Very Mad World: Donnie Darko – Show Notes In December 2002 Hine and Buckley met at the Dukes Cinema in Lancaster, Lancashire, UK, for what become one of their most cherished movie-going experiences - to watch an independent film which had already gathered a cult following: Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko is a divisive film popular opinion swings between it being a poignant and magical modern classic to it being amateurish, film school bullshit with an inexplicably great cast (and soundtrack!!!). In this feature length episode (an entire swaggering minute longer than the run-time of the theatrical cut itself!) Hine and Buckley drill down deep into why the film still means so much to them almost 21 years later, what Richard Kelly actually intended the film to mean, why it's actually a '90s masterpiece (despite not being set, made or released in the '90s) and what the "S" in "S. Darko" might stand for... Recorded 16 March 2023. Jordan and Alex explore the creation of everyone's favorite coming-of-age psycho-horror New Wave time-travel flick — with rabbits. Listen to learn all the ways rookie director Richard Kelly beat the hellish odds to make his incredibly ambitious feature film debut, why Jason Schwartzman was very nearly the title character, and how this movie quite literally couldn't have happened without Drew Barrymore, the true MVP of the production. You'll also find out what song was supposed to be used for the Sparkle Motion dance sequence, why Gary Jules' haunting “Mad World” cover was a last-minute addition, and why Donnie Darko is real-life neighbors with Ferris Bueller. Plus, the TMI Boys make a valiant effort to parse apart the many theories about the true meaning of this unexplainable movie.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rabbits are the new pennywise.Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss Donnie Darko, the 2001 cult film directed by Richard Kelly and starring Jake Gyllenhaal.Set in October 1988, the film follows Donnie Darko, an emotionally troubled teenager who inadvertently escapes a bizarre accident by sleepwalking. He has visions of Frank, a mysterious figure in a rabbit costume who informs him that the world will end in just over 28 days. Frank begins to manipulate Donnie to commit several crimes.Follow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ Facebook↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Tip us $5↪ LinktreeDevelopment began in late 1997 when Kelly had graduated from film school and started writing scripts. He took an early idea of a jet engine falling onto a house with no one knowing its origin and built the story around it. Kelly insisted on directing the film himself and struggled to secure backing from producers until 2000, when Barrymore's Flower Films agreed to produce it on a $4.5 million budget. Filming took 28 days in the summer of 2000, mostly in California. The soundtrack features a cover of "Mad World" by Tears for Fears by American musicians Gary Jules and Michael Andrews, which went to No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks. The film premiered on January 19, 2001 at the Sundance Film Festival, followed by a limited theatrical release on October 26. Because the film's advertising featured a crashing plane and the September 11 attacks had occurred a month and a half before, it was scarcely advertised, which affected its box office performance; it grossed just $517,375 in its initial run. We started The Green Pill Podcast in September 2020 to create a space to talk about change. Now we're going through a major change ourselves: in about one month, I head to trial to face criminal charges that could transform the rest of my life. And it's for that reason we're transforming the podcast, too. There's the obvious reason: I may not be here much longer to serve as host. Priya, Ronnie, Dean, and Chloe will step up in various ways to ensure the show continues. But there's a more fundamental reason, too. To truly create change, we need you to be a part of this. So while we're changing the name to Everybody *Wayne Hsiung* Tonight!, the two characters that are most important in the new titles are the two asterisks. You see, in code, the asterisk stands for a wildcard. And while the show will go on, following me via letters from prison if necessary, what will really sustain it is if *you* get involved. I can think of no better people to discuss this idea than the team who joined me for this first episode of the rebranded podcast. Ronnie Rose is co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere – and the first animal rights activist I met when I moved to the Bay Area in 2012. He helped us establish not just the intellectual foundation, but the values, which supercharged the grassroots animal rights movement in California and beyond. Priya Sawheny is co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere. She's been one of my most important partners in crime (figuratively, of course) over the last 10 years, and is helping launch a new org, The Sanctuary Initiative. Dean Wyrzykowski is the former President of the Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy and grassroots director in my 2020 campaign for Mayor of Berkeley. He's leading the operations for The Sanctuary Initiative. Finally, Chloe Leffakis, who joined us by Zoom, has been my social media lead (and sometime avatar) for the last 5 or so years. She's joining us as a founding staff member of The Sanctuary Initiative – and will continue to play a crucial mostly-behind-the-scenes role in everything we do. We talk in this podcast about what we've learned from the past 10 years, and our plans for the future. But, most importantly, we talk about how to get you more involved. No matter what happens next month, as long as we find ways to stay connected, and stay kind, we'll make progress. Thanks for joining the journey so far – and believe me when I say, the best is yet to come. The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky (novel)Beasts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation by Sunaura Taylor (book)Axolotl by Julio Cortázar (short story)Mad World by Gary Jules (song)Donnie Darko by Richard Kelley (film)Music by Dayzee Deva (cover of "Everybody Have Fun Tonight”)
**FREE GIVEAWAY** James Black Presents - Mad World (Tears for Fears Rework) End of the Summer and I wanted to give away a remix that really reminds me of the crazy times we've had over the last couple of years, and this remix has been popping up during my trance livestreams for some time. I was pursuing label commitment for this, but I decided to give it away for free as a THANKYOU to all who support me and have been supporting me in my career, livestreams and official releases. It's always important to give something back. This is a rework of the classic 'Mad World' by Tears for Fears & Gary Jules, made popular again in the early 2000's by its use in Donny Darko. It IS a 'mad world' we live in... Enjoy
Curt Smith joins Behind the Setlist to talk about Tears for Fears' new album, The Tipping Point, his excitement to play the new songs live, how to choose songs for concerts, his opinion on encores and much more. Smith and bandmate Roland Orzabal first hit the charts in the U.K. in 1982 with "Mad World." For a time, the band performed the song to sound like the darker Gary Jules and Michael Andrews version that was featured on the soundtrack to the film Donnie Darko in 2001. They have also performed the song acoustically and with a full choir. "To me, it's the strength of a song that allows it to be done in many different ways. If the song doesn't fall flat, then obviously the song itself is the strength, it's not necessarily the recording," says Smith. To his point, "Mad World" has been covered by Adam Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Pentatonix, Susan Boyle, Brandi Carlile and most recently Demi Lovato. These days, "Mad World" is one of a handful of tracks from the group's 1983 debut, The Hurting, that's certain to played on the band's current U.S. tour and the U.K. tour that begins in July. "Change," "Pale Shelter" and "Suffer the Children" are setlist standards. So are "Break It Down Again" from 1993's Elemental and two songs from 1989's The Seeds of Love: "Woman in Chains" and "Sowing the Seeds of Love." Fans will also hear the band's hits from the group's 1985 smash album, Songs From The Big Chair: "Shout," "Head Over Heals/Broken" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." In years past, Tears for Fears usually covered Radiohead's "Creep" in their sets. That may not make the final cut as the band makes room for new songs. As for new material, Smith is excited to find out how they transfer to the stage. "The fun part of the first week to two weeks of touring is, you may not have got it right," he says. "And you may want to change things for the first bunch of shows. So until you get in front of an audience, you don't know 100% what's going to work." SUMMARY:Our guest on this episode is Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears. Known for such classics as “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” “Head Over Heels,” “Mad World,” and “Sowing the Seeds of Love,” the group has a brand new album, The Tipping Point, and is embarking on a major world tour. PART ONE:Scott and Paul read listener emails and set the record straight on their opinion of the moon landing.PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Roland Orzabal.ABOUT ROLAND ORZABAL AND TEARS FOR FEARS:Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith formed Tears for Fears in Bath, England, in 1981 and have gone on to sell 30 million albums worldwide. Their major breakthrough in the UK came in 1982 with the Top 5 single “Mad World” and the subsequent platinum-selling album The Hurting. They gained major steam in the US with their sophomore album Songs From the Big Chair, which included the hit singles “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” and “Head Over Heels.” Featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Songs From the Big Chair reached #1 and was certified five times Platinum by the RIAA. Tears for Fears' follow-up single “Sowing the Seeds of Love” was another massive hit, but Curt departed the group not long after. Following a couple of albums with Orzabal at the helm, the duo reunited for the Everybody Loves a Happy Ending album in 2004. Now, after a long wait of 17 years, Roland and Curt have just released their seventh studio album The Tipping Point, and are embarking on a major tour. Even as they bring us new music, their legacy is well-established as one of the most unique and influential British groups to emerge in the last few decades. Their songs have been covered or sampled by Gary Jules, Adam Lambert, Lorde, Kanye West, Drake, and many others. And, in 2021, the band was honored with the Outstanding Song Collection honor at the Ivor Novello Awards in London.
Find your low-rise jeans and come with us on a journey through time, to the epicenter of our youth: the early aughts. Candace and Ariel are talking to filmmaker LaShaunte Wade about two movies in our mental horror scrapbooks: Louisiana Gothic of menacing Spanish moss The Skeleton Key (2005), and mind-freak Millennial anthem Donnie Darko (2001). We also talk scary grandmas, problematic jump scares, the mean streak in early 2000's culture, thrifting tips, Ariel's Gary Jules obsession, the sounds of Are You Afraid of the Dark, and The Cheeseburger Phone movie - you know the one. Also is Donnie Darko a Halloween romcom? Listen to find out. Trust us, we would never doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion. LaShaunte is a professional traveling chef and fashion photographer turned filmmaker, writer, and creator of Dark Creeds Productions. Her first short film, Let Them Eat, has won over 8 awards for best special fx and best female director - and 11 nominations on top of honorable mentions and over achievement awards for special fx, best actress, and best director. My guest today is Bryan Cook a Los Angeles based mixer working in the studio world for the past 20 years. Bryan grew up just outside of Philadelphia, playing the saxophone. A book of Charlie Parker solos became the initial inspiration to pursue music on a deeper level experiencing the studio for the first time in high school and he went on to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study music production and engineering, where his first studio job was interning at Blue Jay studios outside of Boston. Upon graduation, Bryan headed to Los Angeles, where he landed at the legendary A&M Studios, which has since been renamed Henson Recording Studios. He worked with artists like Rod Stewart, The Wallflowers, Korn and +Live+, and producers such as Brendan O'Brien, Roy Thomas Baker, Jerry Harrison, Richard Perry, and Trevor Horn. He then headed out on his own in 2002. He worked for many years recording and mixing for composer/producer Michael Andrews doing music projects including Inara George and Gary Jules, alongside film projects like Walk Hard and 40 year old virgin. He now mixes on his own full time with the rare tracking or production session sprinkled in. He enjoys all kinds of music, except klezmer and polka. Bryan is best known for his work as a mixer for artists like U2, One Republic, the tv show Songland, and Allie Sherlock produced by Ryan Tedder. He has recorded the Raconteurs, Fleet Foxes, Iggy Pop, Queens of the Stoneage, Cold War Kids, Damien Rice, The Eels, and Autolux for Nigel Godrich's well-received “From The Basement” series. His recent work includes producing, recording, and mixing Jeff Goldblum's latest album, “I Shouldn't Be Telling You This.” Thank you to Howard Willing for the introduction. Tears for Fears ruled the pop charts for much of the 1980s with their unique mix of instantly catchy synth sounds, irresistible hooks, and confessional lyrics. Like everybody in music, the duo of singer/songwriter/guitarist Roland Orzabal and singer/bassist Curt Smith wanted to rule the world, and they certainly achieved that with a string of hits spanning several albums. It all began with their 1983 debut album, The Hurting. The LP's haunting breakthrough hit, "Mad World," was originally intended to just be a B-Side to lead single "Pale Shelter." It was the band's A&R exec David Bates who pushed for its release as a single, and the rest is history. The song took on a life of its own and still widely influences artists and delights new generations -- especially after it was completely reimagined by Gary Jules for the cult classic movie Donnie Darko. Tears for Fears' Roland Orzabal joins host Peter Csathy on The Story Behind the Song to discuss "Mad World," as well as Tears for Fears' new single "The Tipping Point," the title track on their newly announced album, which will be their first in 17 years. Don't forget to like and subscribe to The Story Behind the Song wherever you get your podcasts, and follow the Consequence Podcast Network for updates on all our series. Donnie Darko | Jake Gyllenhaal | Maggie Gyllenhaal | Drew Barrymore | Patrick Swayze | [2001] Join us as we digest the 2001 cult classic filled with many breakout talent Donnie Darko as a part of our Halloween Month Special. Donnie Darko is a 2001 American science fiction psychological thriller film written and directed by Richard Kelly and produced by Flower Films. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Stu Stone, Daveigh Chase, and James Duval. Donnie Darko is set in October 1988 and it follows Donnie Darko, a troubled teenager who narrowly escapes a bizarre accident and has visions of Frank, a mysterious figure in a rabbit costume who informs him that the world will end in just over 28 days. Frank begins to manipulate Donnie to commit several crimes. Development began in late 1997 when Kelly had graduated from film school and started writing scripts. He took an early idea of a jet engine falling onto a house with no one knowing its origin and built the story around it. Kelly insisted on directing the film in person and struggled to secure backing from producers until 2000, when Barrymore's Flower Films agreed to produce it on a $4.5 million budget. Filming took 28 days in the summer of 2000, mostly in California. The soundtrack features a cover of "Mad World" by Tears for Fears by American musicians Gary Jules and Michael Andrews, which went to No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks. Donnie Darko premiered on January 19, 2001 at the Sundance Film Festival, followed by a limited theatrical release on October 26. Due to the film's advertising featuring a crashing plane and the September 11 attacks that have transpired a month and a half before, it was scarcely advertised, which affected its box office performance; it grossed just $517,375 in its initial run. Despite this, Donnie Darko received positive reviews and was listed No. 2 in Empire's "50 Greatest Independent Films of All Time" and No. 53 in Empire's "500 Greatest Movies of All Time". After reissues, it went on to gross $7.5 million worldwide. In March 2002, the film was released on home video, earning $500,000 in sales and gained a cult following. #DonnieDarko #JakeGyllenhaal #JenaMalone #MaggieGyllenhaal #DrewBarrymore #MaryMcDonnell #KatharineRoss #PatrickSwayze #NoahWyle #StuStone #DaveighChase #JamesDuval #RichardKelly #SeanMcKittrick #NancyJuvonen #AdamFields #StevenPoster #SamBauer #EricStrand #MichaelAndrews #FlowerFilms #PandoraCinema #NewmarketFilms #CultClassic #MovieByte #MovieBytePodcast #JustChillinEntertainment --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Us: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moviebytepod... The components of music grab on tight to our emotional circuitry. In times of trouble, music is there to soothe the soul and ease the mind. This week Gavin, Leah, and Chris explore why music is an essential component of movies and TV, as well as how music is used to reduce stress. Plus, our friend Ray joins us to explore the mysteries of how music has such a hold on our emotions and why music therapy exists. (Hint: Music always helps the vibes.) We do not own the copyrights to 21st Century Breakdown by Green Day or Mad World by Gary Jules. We are using the songs for educational and commentary purposes. Folge Nummer 31. Shoutout an den 1. April. Deshalb: Shoutout an Greta Thunberg.
On this week's return of our Sunday Special, Jasmine and Zach get really worked up about this stupid STUPID movie and its horrendous depiction of ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder. This movie is like Simple Jack from Tropic Thunder meets Rain Man meets Sean Penn from I Am Sam. It's so bad I thought it was something released in the 80's or 90's about autism. This is so, so sad. Alexa please play Mad World by Gary Jules. The pair you are about to hear are not professionals. Their opinions and beliefs are not fact. They are just two idiots that are Spitting Nonsense. Hi, We are Jasmine and Zach here to present you with some nerdy news! We upload our news podcast on Wednesdays and our bonus episode on Saturdays!

Episode 6 travels back to the Christmas number ones of the 2000s, a decade dominated by talent shows and reality TV. After Girls Aloud took on One True Voice in 2002, Simon Cowell saw gold and took over the festive chart for the second half of the decade with his next show The X Factor. However, this led to one of the biggest chart shocks of all time, when a certain Facebook campaign took the most unlikely artist to the summit by the end of the decade. Elsewhere, there was yet another Band Aid, an ’80s piano cover and a kids TV show legend. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/eamezey/Christmas_Number_One_Rewind_-_2000s.mp3 (Download the episode), stream in the player above, or subscribe for the latest episodes. On this Michael Andrews interview, how a “one-off” project, The Greyboy Allstars, wound up lasting over 25 years… the curious way Michael stumbled into this entire genre, and his entire career... making the Mad World remake with Gary Jules, the impossibility of “making” your career happen, letting go of self-judgment, architecture and being more positive. Super cool convo, fast-moving and fun :-) Michael Andrews is a guitarist, producer, and film score composer. He's a founding member and guitarist of the legendary San Diego boogaloo/soul jazz band The Greyboy Allstars where he goes by the moniker Elgin Park. Join us in this Mad World., for another hour of dark tunes and tales. This week we discuss and play Gary Jules, Metakross, The Damned, The Mysterines, Car Crash Set and more. Oh, and we've got a great goth gaming and movie tip for you. Thanks for tuning in.
This week we have Director Showdown hosts Adam and Brent on discussing Gary Jules' version of "Mad World", originally by Tears for Fears.
Hello everybody, first of all, I want to apologise for getting Ms' Chen's name wrong just so many times I love her so much and this is simply not the way to show that love. I also want to apologise for making a tiny paper octopus during this because you can hear the rustling however, as is understandable, I have to make this octopus it's incredible. It's like red and its leg stick up and it's really cute anyway getting slightly ahead of myself here. This episode is on Donnie Darko which is absolutely my favourite film ever I have watched it around 6 or 7 times in the past week and it never gets bad. Go watch it! if you haven't watched it this episode will still be absolutely fine to listen to because nothing I say even comes close to what happens in that film. I have many more things to say about it so I am trying to condense things into smaller more specific episodes? and what is this but exactly that? apart from perhaps a disaster. The playlist for the film is as follows (i usually take three from the film and three I think fit the vibe): The killing moon - Echo and the Bunnymen (nice reference to frank right there) Head over heels - Tears for Fears Mad world - Gary Jules (choosing this version because I'm sorry Tears for Fears but it IS better) Caterpillar - The Cure Gigantic - The Pixies Tugboat - Galaxie 500 As always this is the link to the Black Lives Matter doc and i strongly encourage you to read through it and sign any petitions that you can and then share. https://blacklivesmatter.carrd.co/. Next week I will talk about the Cornetto trilogy maybe? but I am afraid that whatever I will say will not give it the same justice that hundreds of other film analysers have. I also have an absolutely terrible track record with sticking to my word so if you do actually end up hearing about Hot Fuzz or The World's End or the other one count yourself lucky that I'm actually going through with something! Also, who knows, maybe one day I will actually talk about captain fantastic, even if that day may be far away. Lord knows I've done enough notes on it.

We can hear you already, you're saying "Oh, A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning, eh, what are you talking about, COLLISION'S LIFE haw haw haw", but the joke's on you, because ... he already knows. He knows. In any case, we picked this because we thought we'd try to keep on keeping things light, but ended up in one of our more contentious episodes, as Clsn kept holding things up and saying "This is a fun bit of mall goth writing for kids!" and J. kept saying "Sure fine whatever but also it's dumb and bad" and ... well ... it's not like J.'s wrong, so. Anyway, you're laughing at us because we're different, but we're laughing at YOU because you're all the same and you'll be laughing at this EPISODE because it's funny! This one is also a fantastic way to hear our direst schemes for bilking orphans, if that's your thing. NOTE: bilking orphans is NOT our thing. Allegedly. "Allegedy" is a word that here means "even if it turns out we do bilk an orphan or two, we can't be sued because we weren't planning it beforehand". Stay well, everybody, and don't forget to wear all black all summer long. And don't forget to wear your mask, either: we love you and want you to stay well. This will not be an episode about the Gary Jules song from the Donny Darko soundtrack (Melissa has no idea what Andy is talking about). What this will be is an episode of attempting to understand the dumpster fire of a world we currently live in. The riots in Minneapolis and other cities that have occurred as a response to the murder of George Floyd have hit close to home for us, both figuratively and literally. This has caused Andy to go on one of his research benders and learn baffling things about riots, especially those that occurred in Los Angeles in 1992. Which means Melissa is about to be the recipient of way more information than a person should be force-fed in one span of one podcast. Join us on our journey to understand what people must go through time and time again that leads to a level of anger and heartbreak great enough to need to cause destruction to finally be heard. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

I love this song by Gary Jules, looked up a YouTube instrumental and just started singing while it was raining.
We punched up the TRUE national anthem with Travis McElroy (@travismcelroy - My Brother, My Brother and Me, The Adventure Zone podcasts). Is it drugs? Is it love? Are they the same thing? Seal will never explain his 1994 hit "Kiss From A Rose" and personally??? I respect that.Video of the punch-up available on Youtube!Plus, an important announcement from Demi.UNPUNCHABLE JAMS: "Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull, "Don't Give Up" by The Whitest Boy Alive, "Black Rainbow" by St. Vincent, "Tiger Teeth" by Walk the Moon, "Stolen Moments" by Cautious Clay, "Ghosts" by Gary Jules.ALSO, I FACT-CHECKED MYSELF on the "key changes" we reference throughout the episode and found this incredibly insightful comment from reddit user "willylumplumps""It looks like his main device in "Kiss From a Rose" is to blend the keys of G mixolydian (key of C) and Gminor. So for example, the intro is Gmin, F, G. This has a mysterious sound because the first two chords sort of establish the key as Gmin or Bb while the G major sort of surprises us and snaps us back to key of C.The verses and choruses are G mixolydian which is really just the key of C starting on the 5 chord. He's starts using the borrowed chord flat 3 (Eb).One last sneaky thing he does is that he never goes to the tonic until the bridge which gives the bridge a really triumphant quality because our brains and ears haven't heard home until this point. And then he drops a freakin' flat 6 chord on us just because he can"Live Shows:AUG. 30 - SEPT. 1 BUMBERSHOOT MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL • SEATTLE, WASEPT. 7 XOXO FEST 2019 • PORTLAND, ORFollow us on social:Punch Up The Jam: twitter.com/punchupthejam | instagram.com/punchupthejamUnpunchable Jams playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2BkkFZcsJaS7VKN2v3sZM6Miel: twitter.com/miel | instagram.com/mielmonsterDemi: twitter.com/electrolemon | instagram.com/electrolemon

Hans grew up in Tucson AZ where he started playing and singing in bands when he was 15. His early audio experiences started with using borrowed 4 track cassette machines to make mix tapes of hip hop and punk tunes recorded from vinyl. Hans would compress/eq and change level for each tune so that those tapes would play down like commercially released compilations. He didn't realize it then but he was already starting his journey into mastering. Han's played the role of recording artist by signing to Sony Work Group fresh out of college in 96 with his group Maypole. He toured for a few years opening for Wallflowers, Smoking Popes and Our Lady Peace. By 98 it all ended... and Hans ultimately transitioned to the studio side of things. After mastering a friends record in early 2000 and receiving many referrals as a result, Hans started what was the beginning of a love affair with mastering. By 2005 he was mastering full time. PODCAST: The Curious Phenom of Palate Fatigue with Off Kilter Brewing Founder Jim Goecks This episode features a focus on palate fatigue with no better way to approach the subject than a fun interview with Off Kilter Brewing founder/brewer Jim Goecks. This up-and-coming brewery was born out of a passion for home brewing at Jim's home in South Beloit, IL. Jim shares his knowledge and purposed techniques for brewing malt forward craft beer without the harsh bitterness that has dominated the craft beer revolution. This goal to fill the gap between those traditional American pilsners and hoppier beers that crowd store coolers is no accident, hence the name Off Kilter...it's refreshing! We also dive into a conversation regarding beer palate fatigue as we imbibe some of Jim's awesome craft beer and relate to the thoughtful character given to his brewing style. "Fatigue is a dangerous thing for a beer lover. It plays with your mind, causing you to question what you know to be true and second guess your old favorites. The symptoms of this weariness are familiar and difficult to avoid, even for the most optimistic craft beer enthusiast" (Beer Advocate-Issue 58). BEER TASTING! Of course, it's not a brewing podcast without beer. Thanks to four outstanding beer samples from the Off Kilter line-up, all featured at the Off-Kilter Brewing Taproom at Artisan Pub in South Beloit, and two other stellar beers from 3 Sheeps and Toppling Goliath, we can all assure any palate fatigue is a non-issue. Osmosis - An English/American/Off-Kilter fusion made with authentic English malts and a blend of English and American hops aged in charred oak, that's hoppy yet sports a deep golden color. O Doo Ya - A spring/summer seasonal, but not your traditional Belgian-Style Wit, brewed with imagination for those long summer evenings on the back deck. One-Eyed Jack - This porch pounder is a straw colored ale with a rich white head and a complex malt forward flavor that starts with nice barley richness and a hint of white wheat. Bella Brown - Named after Jim's faithful Great Dane, this winter seasonal a complex Brown Ale with a tightly beaded foam head and hints of citrus, clove and coffee. PLUS!!! Black Kilt Stout - 3 Sheeps - An extremely rare Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout. This collaboration beer was brewed exclusively for BrewFest Partners at 11% ABV. King Sue - Toppling Goliath - At 7.8% ABV and 100+ IBU this hazy double IPA blasts hints of mango, orange, and pineapple from a lot of Citra hops. EXTRAS: We play a quick round of Beer Tag called "You be the judge", and in ode to Jim's home brew beer contest experience, put the test Jim and Mike's judging knowledge. Can you beat them? At long last, the Rolling Stones get MASTAS-ized. We're talking about the folksy wisdom and iconic backing vocals of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," not to mention the value of community music, the ways that chart peaks don't always reflect quality, and the hope that America can chill out for a second. Our theme song is by Andrew Byrne, and our outro is by Gary Jules. Wanna be part of the fun? I'm typing this one handed with a sleeping baby in my arms. Yet our love of Michael Andrews and Gary Jules cover of "Mad World" can't be stopped by such trivialities. Thus the podcast rolls on with special guests Diana Parry-Cruwys, Donnie Darko, Marcus Fenix, and a band of wandering thespians. Please very much enjoy! Michael fell into film score composition by chance when The Greyboy Allstars were asked to score Jake Kasdan's first feature Zero Effect and worked on the music for the highly regarded (though short-lived) TV series, Freaks and Geeks. In 2000, Richard Kelly commissioned Michael to do the soundtrack for the film Donnie Darko. Its original score album went on to sell over 100,000 copies (in part because of Michael's remake of Tears for Fears' song Mad World, featuring Gary Jules). Michael has since gone on to compose scores for the movies Out Cold, Nothing, Cypher, Orange County, Me and You and Everyone We Know, The TV Set, a segment of Paris, je t'aime, Unaccompanied Minors, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. More recently, Michael has composed for: Funny People, Bridesmaids, The Five Year Engagement, Cyrus and Jeff Who Lives At Home for The Duplass Brothers, and the upcoming film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist for Mira Nair.
In 2002, musician Michael Andrews and singer Gary Jules performed a mesmerizing cover of Tears for Fears' “Mad World” for theDonnie Darko soundtrack. That unlikely cover not only found it's way to the top of the music charts, but opened doors for Andrews into the world of film composing. But, as the guitarist explains in this week's FJ podcast, composing film music is just one side of Andrews' career. Under the moniker Elgin Park, he's served as the guitarist for the Greyboy Allstars, the extremely popular soul jazz band based out of San Diego. He is a virtuoso at everything from George Benson-inspired funk to intricate fingerstyle playing.
