But it's not just about gathering sets, we're also taking a deep dive into combo abilities, which take games like Distilled and Evolution to a whole new level of complexity and fun.In the second half, things get even more interesting as we dissect the nuances between set collection games. To kick things off this week we look at the listeners’ responses to the question of the week: "What's your favorite "feeling" you get from a game - for me it's solving a particularly tough puzzle. Do you enjoy the feeling of a perfect die roll? A cascade of effects from a tableau you've built, the awe of a board covered in miniatures?" In acquisition disorders this week, Anthony looks at the likely sequel to Castles of Burgundy, Castles of Tuscany, coming from Alea and Stefan Feld later this year. Chris looks at the newest from Genius Games on Kickstarter, Genotype: A Mendelian Genetics Game. At the table this week, Anthony played a short and quick two player co-op trick gaming (really!) - Fox in the Forest: Duet. Chris digs into a pile of games, including Blood Rage with the new Promos Box, Marvel Champions: The Card Game, Quadropolis, and Three Kingdoms Redux Finally, in the feature, Anthony and Chris welcome Michael - a Patreon Backer and a good friend of Anthony's in Pittsburgh - to the podcast to discuss one of his favorite games, The Great Zimbabwe. Prepare for a deep-dive discussion into an underrated gem in the Splotter lineup. Welcome to Season 2! We pick up right where Season 1 left off. ITGirl, Baninja, and Fish Out Of Water have regained consciousness and/or hearing, and now flee under Quadropolis from the searching mechanical eyes of Gwennifer Work at Binary Consolidated! We're experimenting with shorter episodes this season to better fit your listening habits. Let us know what you think at hero@justusweridos.com The post Issue 19: Sewer Chase! appeared first on Just Us Weirdos.
Emergency in Quadropolis! A helicopter has crashed into the dam, and it threatens the whole city! Graphene and Fish Out of Water team up with Mrs Work (?!?!?!), while the grounded ITGirl and Baninja team up with Butlerbot and find their own ways to help. Only three episodes remain in Season 1! MHGG Ep 121 - Whippin Blu-Rays Redux Joined by Wes, the DM for Mile High Dungeon Delvers, our hosts dive into this week's show. With not much happening in their personal lives, they get right to recently played games where Jeff flicked penguins around an extra large school in Ice Cool 2, Wes went on adventures in Action Castle, Adrian sent robots out in City of Gears, and Zach narrowly stayed aloft in Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition. After talking recent plays, the hosts crawl into the Lookback Machine to revisit some of their old reviews. News mainly features new games announced at PaxU like Metal Gear and Clank Legacy. Kickstarter focuses on a massive miniatures game in Tainted Grail and fancy Blood Bowl upgrades with Blizzone. Robinson Crusoe In this episode, our hosts are once again joined by Special Guest Megan. They start off catching up on recently played games, including Snake Oil and The Pantheon expansion for 7 Wonders Duel. In the Kickstarter section, they talk about Quodd Heroes’ Relaunch, the SuperHot card game, and the Wyrmwood D&D GM Screen. Adrian also reminds us that Fuedem is opening for late Pledging. Some new expansions are announced, specifically for Quadropolis and Mystic Vale and the Golden Geek Awards nominations are open. The game discussion of the week is Robinson Crusoe. Does this punishing Co-op find salvation in its thematic mechanisms? Or does this game leave you starving for something more? Find out inside!
In this week's episode, Zach immediately zones out as Jeff and Adrian discuss Civ 6 and snowboarding, two things he couldn't care less about. He is awakened when the off topic discussion shifts to Red Dead Redemption following the release of the new trailer. Eventually the 3 hosts manage to end up discussing boardgames as they recap the last week of gaming before launching headlong into news and kickstarter discussions. Building on the already solid foundation laid up until this point, the three of them take to reviewing the city building game Quadropolis before working their way into a discussion of pacing in boardgames. The show wraps up as Zach and Adrian recount meeting a fan and then Jeff's true identity is revealed in an email. The Networks and the Bitter Rivals: Luck and Skill The hosts unload a vast treasure of new played games into the opening banter, including Terraforming Mars, Quadropolis, and Twilight Struggle. Then, instead of a regular news and Kickstarter, they discuss Essen Spiel 2016 and some of the games they are looking forward to the most, lack of info be damned. In the review section, they discuss another Essen release, The Networks, and how great it is the run your own TV Network. The discussion of the day is Luck vs Skill. What is better? Can games be fun without a combination of both? Which is more important? These questions and more are answered to the best of our (limited) ability. The episode closes out with a reminder of our first ever Giveaway. 00:00:20 Banter! Handegg! Weekend gaming! Episode 125: The Impact Of Large Scale Media Length: 1:51:00 Show Links: RSS | iTunes | Stitcher | Download Episode Welcome back to Vox Republica, the Cardboard Republic Podcast! We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 45 minutes long. Vox Republica is proudly supported by our Patreon. Consider contributing today! DESCRIPTION: This week we turn the lens inward on gaming media itself. After discussing the philosophy behind how often someone should play a game before judging (or reviewing) it, Erin and Ryan then invite on veteran reviewers Michael Fox (Little Metal Dog Show) and Jonathan Wolf (islaythedragon) to chat about the 800 pound Kotaku in the room. As gaming continues to grow, it's attracting attention from non-traditional hobby gaming sites to cover games. With scopes of coverage dwarfing even that of The Dice Tower, we examine the positives - and negatives - that such newcomers have on gaming media and the hobby on the whole. GUESTS: Michael Fox & Jonathan Wolf RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (01:36): Vast: The Crystal Caverns by Leder Games Agility by Two Lanterns Games Potion Explosion by Cool Mini Or Not Mystic Vale by Alderac Entertainment Group Mansions of Madness: Second Edition by Fantasy Flight Games QUICK TOPICS - (38:23): How many times do you have to play a game before being able to render a verdict on it? Erin and Ryan discuss what they feel their ideal number is, both for gamers and for reviewers. Ryan also floats his idea for a new vlog. FEATURED TOPIC - (54:39): As the gaming hobby continues to expand, it seems that some entities with sizable readership have decided to get in on the fun. To figure out what that means for the hobby and hobby media, we decided to round up a couple and chat about it. Together with Michael Fox of Little Metal Dog Show and editor Jonathan Wolf of islaythedragon, we dive into how it affects those of us on the content creation side. Topics include: Why are larger entities taking more of an interest in gaming lately? Was this a natural progression due to growth of the hobby? What the positive implications that their involvement can have on the hobby itself How their presence impacts 'hobbyist media' and how entities should adjust/cope with that impact Are there any serious detriments to this increased interest from large outlets? PLUGS - (1:51:00): We reviewed Quadropolis! We're also raffling off a copy of August Indie Spotlight game Vast! We're also also raffling off a copy of Avalanche at Yeti Mountain to a lucky Patreon backer. Consider donating today! As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos, Instagram pictures, and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. Subscribe to either - or both if you really love us. You do really love us, right? Recorded from War Room Studios in Albuquerque, NM : 7-12-16 This episode brought to you by BoardgameTables.com and Meeple Realty - A fun filled episode, RIDDLED with mistakes (Gotta catch em all!) - Our summer travels are quickly winding down and we attempt to shake the rust off. As a welcome back gift, Josh plays a joke on Brandon and he needs new ear drums! Josh makes sure to check in on all embarrassing iTunes reviews, including one from j5ldh. Can anyone tell us what a Luscious Delectable Helicopter is?! Our 4th of July celebrations are proceeded by Brandon's 95th birthday! We check in on our BGG Guild and - What's this?!? - the heathens (brawlers?) are calling for a Solo Josh episode??? Then is crusty and musty in a SUPREME way, and begins with a supreme theft! We delicately explore the phallic tendencies of Mare Nostrum & consider writing a jingle for our friends at Asmodee. In questions from a hat we discuss our favorite gaming accessories, compare video games to board games, name our favorite 6 player games and proudly proclaim our favorite podcasts (board gaming and otherwise). As with every 10th episode, we wrap up with a bleep filled outtake roll from the previous 10 shows - If you don't laugh, we owe you a churro! Tonight Dan and Chris talk about a ton of new games played from Origins till now including some prototypes (Merchants of Araby) and some new hotnesses (The Networks and Tyrants of the Underdark). And we do a full fledged review of a new Days of Wonder Game Quadropolis! Thanks for listening!
Strap on your jackboots! It's time for a veritable military parade of a podcast, proceeding at an impressive pace but nonetheless going on for slightly too long. Games covered include Dear Leader, A Feast to Die For, Quadropolis, Fairytale and Pandemic: Contagion, as well as the long-awaited second half of our spoiler-filled Pandemic Legacy chat! Don't worry about that particular minefield. It's very clearly signposted at the end of the cast. (This episode's thumbnail art is courtesy of BGG user Punkin 312.)
We have a look at a game that is up for a dice tower award for "Game of the Year by a Small Publisher" First we look at a few games we've played recently : Quadropolis (00:30) City of Iron (08:00) Merchants and Merauders (17:30) Red Dragon Inn (25:10) Then we have a look back at Thunderstone Advance (29:00) - does it still hold up being one of the first deck builders? Finally we look at Champions of Midgard - theme and components. Are we tired of vikings? Does this add anything to a worker placement genre? Are there any interesting mechanisms? Is there anything we would change? Don't forget to check out dicetower.com and click on the Awards link to view all the great games up for an award!
