Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
Dio's first two albums, Holy Diver and The Last in Line, were hard rock classics. So, why change things up? If anything, Sacred Heart was a bit poppier, but largely it sounded like the first two, which was both a blessing and a curse. It would be the last album with Vivian Campbell on guitar, signaling that the band's sound would change a bit for the following record, but not radically.

On the 63rd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, the co-host of the Growin' Up Rock Podcast, Steven Michael, review the self-titled 1987 breakthrough album from Whitesnake. Whitesnake was a veteran British blues hard rock band with limited success in the United States. By 1987, David Coverdale wanted to change the band's style and image to a more Americanized version. He started with the music. The album is considered Whitesnake's "hair Metal" phase. The band was always a double guitar band, but this time, guitarist extraordinaire, John Sykes would contribute all the guitars and assist in the lyrics. Long time bassist, Neil Murray was on board as was top notch drummer, Aynsley Dunbar. Finalizing this lineup is Shout It Out Loudcast's favorite, Don Airey. After the music was completed, Coverdale proceeded to fire all the band members and hired an all star lineup to tour and more importantly appear in the MTV videos, including, Vivian Campbell, Adrian Vandenberg, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldrich. But, more importantly he added his then fiancée, Tawny Kitaen to their videos and the band and the album exploded. Songs like "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love" made it to Number 1 and 2 on radio respectively. The videos were all over MTV. The album was produced by Mike Stone and Keith Olsen. The album made it to Number 2 on the Billboard Charts and went 8X Platinum. The success of the band is credited to Coverdale's amazing vocals and frontman capabilities and John Sykes legendary melodic guitar work. However, the videos and Tawny Kitaen's impact cannot be overstated. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Patreon pick. Please make sure you join! Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Steve Singiser. Steve is formerly a contributing editor at Daily Kos Elections and now is a contributor at The Downballot.Steve's Music Pick: Def LeppardDo you wanna get rocked? If the answer is yes and the decade was the 1980s, it's likely Def Leppard was at least partially responsible for the rocking. With two massive albums released four years apart, the band's songs provided the soundtrack for a generation.Pyromania lit the fuse, so to speak, with “Photograph” bursting through televisions on MTV and with “Foolin'” and “Rock of Ages” cracking the Billboard Top 40 chart. The production skills and songwriting savvy of “Mutt” Lange was key. A de-facto sixth band member, his contributions transformed the group from a solid British hard rock/heavy metal band to one that took over the world with massive pop/rock crossover success. Infinite hooks, layered vocals, processed everything, pre-choruses everywhere -- those are Lange trademarks that helped lure in listeners.Hysteria followed after a number of setbacks and delays. Drummer Rick Allen lost an arm and Lange initially pulled out of the project due to exhaustion. But once things came together, the album took off like a rocket. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” was the jet fuel to power Hysteria after initial just okay sales numbers. Eventually seven singles were released, including #1 hit “Love Bites,” fulfilling the ambitions of creating a hard rock Thriller.Unfortunately, guitarist Steve Clark lost his battle with alcoholism shortly afterward. His songwriting contributions and playing style are missed from future releases, though Vivian Campbell has proven to be a solid replacement. There's plenty to love from the first two albums, prior to the band's breakthrough, and Adrenalize and Euphoria still contain highlights (we urge you to check out “Paper Sun” from the latter album). This is also a story about loyalty. Def Leppard's line-up has been remarkably consistent through the years. When Rick Allen lost his arm, band members gave him the time to recover and learn to play in a different way. When “Mutt” Lange couldn't produce Hysteria, the band realized the project couldn't move forward without him. When Steve Clark needed help, the band gave him time off and got him into rehab as many times as possible. The band still is a huge draw on tour because songs as good as these don't die. Listen in, enjoy the tunes and feel free to rock, rock ‘til you drop.
It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. Listeners of our show know that The Wolf loves Ronnie James Dio and his epic voice. We've done past episodes on his time in Sabbath (UAWIL #13), the Dreamers Never Die bio-pic/documentary (UAWIL #98) and last year's Holy Diver at 40 (UAWIL #129). So as Dio's sophomore effort turns 40 in 2024, we took the opportunity to celebrate Ronnie's voice and dive into The Last In Line. With the same lineup as Holy Diver - Vivian Campbell - guitar, Jimmy Bain - bass, Vinnie Appice - drums - Ronnie sought to recapture the magic from the first album. And with stadium rockers like We Rock, Egypt (The Chains Are On) and the title track, the band showed progress while keeping in touch with the anthemic rock that got them where they were. But are songs like Breathless and Evil Eyes really Dio songs? Are could they have been released by any hard rock band of the era? While The Last In Line showcases Ronnie's voice in a way that no one else could ever sing the song, some of the tracks on the album don't seem to hold up to the same standard. Vivian Campbell is glorious throughout the album with some thrashing solos and a touch of Eddie Van Halen here and there. Vinnie and Jimmy provide the devastating beat that makes this a hard rock classic and Ronnie's vocals are as strong as ever. But should they have taken more time to hone down the songs? Should they have spent more money on the videos? We dive into all those questions to celebrate Ronnie and The Last In Line at 40. HAIR METAL Podcast EP.24: Hear 'N Aid (1986) "Stars" An All-Star Album For Famine Relief. The Hair Metal Podcast looks back at the Thrash, Glam & Rock Pop Metal bands, music, events and everything else that heavily influenced the 80's & early 90's Hair Metal music era. On this episode of the Hair Metal Podcast, hosts Kevin and Mike discuss the monumental metal music event of the 80's, Hear 'N Aid (1986) "Stars" An All-Star Album For Famine Relief. Hear 'n Aid was a charity record recorded by a large ensemble of 40 heavy metal musicians and released in 1986. The project was organized by Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, all from the band Dio. Proceeds from the album were used to raise over $3 million for famine relief in Africa. The 40 metal and rock musicians were gathered together by Dio and recorded the single "Stars" together while the rest of the album was filled out with eight other tracks, several of which were contributed by artists who were on tour and unable to attend and participate in the mass recording session. This week the lads hop across the pond to do some more excavation of denim and leather… Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Saxon, Judas Priest are not on this episode, however, the one and only: Tony Griggs is! The NWOBM movement was filled with passionate bands from Great Britain that were poised to take over the world in the early 80s. Tony is a big fan of these groups and we are happy to have him on board to help spread the word and sounds for those bands that didn't quite make it to the mainstream. What's this InObscuria thing? While the album Whitesnake may not be the debut album from the band Whitesnake, this self-titled seventh studio album might as well be a debut, as only two members were present from the previous album. Known in the UK as 1987, and in Japan as Serpens Albus, this album featured returning members John Sykes on guitars and backing vocals, and David Coverdale on lead vocals. Additionally Neil Murray was on bass, Aynsley Dunbar was on percussion, and Don Airey was on keyboards.David Coverdale was the lead singer for Deep Purple, and left the group in 1976. He did a couple of solo albums, the first of which was named “White Snake.” He formed the band Whitesnake as his backing band in 1978. They had a lot of success in the UK, Europe, and Japan with their early albums, but Coverdale wanted to break through in North America by the mid-80's. He started moving from a blues/hard rock sound to a more glam metal sound, starting with the album "Slide It In" in 1984, and fully embraced the heavy metal sound and hair band image with this album.Whitesnake would get significant airplay, with two singles going to number 1 (Here I Go Again) and number 2 (Is This Love?) on the Billboard US charts. Their videos would be staples of MTV, with prominent exposure of Tawny Kitaen, Coverdale's girlfriend and soon-to-be wife. The band would be broken up shortly after the album was complete, leaving David Coverdale as the sole member by the time they went on tour. This was despite the fact that John Sykes co-wrote all but two of the songs on the album. Get your hair metal on as Bruce puts his metal hair on, presenting this week's album. Bad BoysA deeper cut, this song is heavy on the rock and light on the significance of the lyrics. “Bad bad boys, getting wild in the street, wild in the city, I see you - you see me.” Much of the album has this heavy rock sound.Crying In the Rain '87This track that starts the album is a reworked song originally released by the group in 1982. The original is more bluesy and has a slower tempo than this version. The song was inspired by David Coverdale's divorce.Give Me All Your LoveThis was the fourth single from the album, and it reached number 58 on the US Top 100 charts. By the time the single was released in January 1988 a new guitar solo had been recorded by Vivian Campbell, replacing guitarist and co-writer John Sykes. Campbell would tour with the band but would leave before the next album.Still of the NightThe first single from the album may have only hit number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it received significant airplay on rock stations and MTV. The comparisons to Led Zeppelin were frequent, not just for the guitar riffs, but also for the heavy drumming and similarity between the vocalizations of Coverdale and Robert Plant. The song is about obsession, maybe a vampire, maybe a stalker. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Love and Marriage by Frank Sinatra (from the television series “Married...With Children”)This anti-Cosby Show family dystopia followed the antics of shoe salesman Al Bundy and his family. STAFF PICKS:Tonight, Tonight, Tonight by GenesisLynch gets the staff picks going with a single from Genesis's album Invisible Touch. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 despite being written less as a pop song and more like the prog rock style that Genesis used earlier in the decade. The lyrics are about a conversation with a drug dealer, a fact that must have been missed when Michelob used the song to promote their beer.Love Removal Machine by The CultWayne's staff pick is the first single from The Cult's third album, Electric. It went to number 15 on the Mainstream Rock charts in the United States. Lead singer Ian Astbury compares this song to getting on your favorite motorcycle. The opening riff is often compared to “Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones.Ahead by Wire Rob features the closest post punk band Wire would get to a pop single. It has a spacey, ethereal sound. Wire had extensive influence over many groups, including Sonic Youth, The Cure, and R.E.M. First We Take Manhattan by Jennifer WarnesBruce closes out the staff picks with a song written by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Jennifer Warnes originally did this song for a Cohen tribute album, and it features guitarist extraordinaire Stevie Ray Vaughan. The song itself is dark and apocalyptic, with lyrics told from the perspective of a terrorist. COMEDY TRACK:Put Down the Duckie by Hoots the Owl and ErnieWe first learned that we have to put down the duckie if we want to play the saxophone from this skit, which aired on Sesame Street for the first time in April 1987.

Oh, what a night! Our guest is legendary, superbly talented guitar player Michael Staertow. He is currently a member of the legendary band, The Guess Who, which is currently gearing up to release its latest creation, Plein D'Amour. Band members Derek Sharp, Michael Staertow, Leonard Shaw, Michael Devin, and founding member, Garry Peterson have crafted a collection of songs that raises the bar and continues to take things up a notch both musically and sonically. Before The Guess Who, Michael was the guitarist for Lou Gramm. Michael is one of only a few guitar players to work with Lou Gramm, the voice of “Hot Blooded,” “Head Games,” “Juke Box Hero,” “I Want to Know to What Love Is” and other signature songs of the classic-rock era. That makes him a full-fledged member of a significant guitar-playing fraternity that also includes Foreigner founder Mick Jones, Nils Lofgren and Vivian Campbell. Michael has been the focus of articles in Guitar World, Guitar One and Vintage Guitar magazines, and he was featured in Gbase.com's Gearhead Gazette as well as featured on many popular podcasts. An aspiring vlogger, Michael captures short scenes from life on the road with Lou Gramm and artists like Dennis Elliot and Deen Castronovo to share on social media. Michael has also added Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp “Rock Star Counselor” to his pedigree.

We're back with all the latest happenings in the rock and metal world with Geekwire! Tragically, one person died and several were injured at a recent Morbid Angel show outside of Chicago. We discuss this sad situation and are sending good vibes to the people affected. Chris recently ventured to the theater to see the Neil Bogart biopic 'Spinning Gold.' Did it accurately portray Neil and the Casablanca Records story? Was it a mess of factual inaccuracies? Above all else, was it worth a watch? Chris gives his full review of the movie. Sebastian Bach recently pranked Skid Row fans by claiming a deluxe edition of 'Subhuman Race' was being released. Did this work as an April Fool's day gag? We give our thoughts. Other stories covered this week include Vinnie Vincent bringing Marq Torien on board for his next event in Nashville, Vivian Campbell professing his love for Phil Lynott, Udo Dirkschneider claiming his current band is more authentic than ACCEPT, and more. We also touch on the recent Ace Frehley and KISS drama (this was recorded before his recent followup interview). We hope you enjoy Geekwire for the week of April 7th, 2023 and SHARE with a friend! When you think about Def Leppard, country music is probably the last thing that comes to mind. This band helped usher in the second wave of British heavy metal and made it appealing to the masses with a polished, pop element to their songs that are all a far cry from the country genre. But on their fourth album, 1987's Hysteria, an album created after the horrifying car accident that took drummer Rick Allen's arm, the band said yes to recording a little song that their producer Mutt Lange brought to them, an acoustic number he had originally written as a country tune that became “Love Bites,” their first chart topper in the US. Unpack the lyrics and history of this song and the incredible triumph of the Hysteria album in the new episode of the Behind The Song podcast. Ronnie wasn't an overnight sensation - he was recording music in the 1950's! But he didn't hit it big with Rainbow until the 70s and success eluded him in American until he eventually replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath and then went on to form DIO with Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain & Vivian Campbell.Hear what we thought of the movie, his falling out with Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, & Vivian Campbell, what he means to us as a singer and his legacy.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteThe RockonteursTwitterInstagramYouTubeLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.comWant to win front row seats to Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in the US?Enter here to win tickets and a chance to be on a Pantheon Podcast: https://pantheonpodcasts.com/nickmasonWe'll be at the Indianapolis show Friday, October 14, Get tickets here: https://www.thesaucerfulofsecrets.com/

With the Labor Day Holiday weekend LC & Bakko are taking a week off. So this week we look back and replay one of our most popular interviews. Jake E Lee from 2018. Originally posted in November 2018, this chat helped get us to a new level so to speak. Jake E Lee joins the program for a wide ranging conversation that covers everything from Ozzy wanting to write songs at 3:00 in the morning, Phil Soussan conspiring against him, not bonding with Ozzy, the Badlands manager trying to blackmail him, how he found out Ray Gillan was sick, the modern way of recording an album, Red Dragon Cartels latest record Patina and SOOOOO much more. Just in time for the Holidays, Jake is the gift that just keeps on giving. A fascinating and at times absurd conversation. You may want to relieve yourself before listening. This one is long. Enjoy.Pantheon Podcasts Pocasts for Music Lovers

It's been https://www.premierguitar.com/rig-rundown-def-leppard (eight years since Def Leppard's Vivian Campbell and Phil Collen) met with PG while they were on the band's arena-filling odyssey in 2014. Now they're on the aptly titled Stadium Tour, playing packed mega-venues with openers Mötley Crüe, Poison, and https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/first-look/epiphone-joan-jett-olympic-special (Joan Jett), delivering songs from the 12 studio albums they've recorded over the past 45 years. It's quite a legacy, with “Bringin' On the Heartbreak,” “Photograph,” “Rock of Ages,” “Animal,” “Love Bites,” and plenty more classic hits. At their June 30 show at Nashville's Nissan Stadium, John Bohlinger talked with Collen, Campbell, and their techs, Scott Appleton and John Zocco, about the guitarists' muscular live-show arsenal. We're back this week with all the rock news that's fit to spit with New Noize April 2022! It's been a heavy past couple weeks in the rock world with sad stories including the untimely death or Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and the reverberations felt worldwide from it. We share our thoughts on Taylor and some of the reactions to it including that of Ted Nugent. Skid Row announced their newest singer recently with the hiring of former H.E.A.T. front man Erik Gronwall. The band released a brand new single 'The Gang's All Here' featuring Gronwall's vocals. We share our thoughts on the hiring of Gronwall, the firing of Z.P. Theart, and what we think the future holds for Skid Row. Bon Jovi recently kicked off their latest tour and the press is definitely not going wild for it. A recent brutal review from their St. Paul show led us to find some audio of the tour kickoff show in Omaha the night before. You won't believe your ears. Even worse, you won't believe the crowd reaction to it. Additionally, Chris Jereicho recently admitted that Fozzy does make use of backing tracks for their live performances and claims that "everybody does." Between these two stories, it's clear that there's some not-so-great things on the horizon for the rock world and Chris makes his feelings known on the subject while pulling no punches. Other stories touched on this week include Vivian Campbell reflecting on his bad deal with Ronnie James Dio, Tom Keifer publicly commenting on his late band mate Jeff Labar's passing, Spike getting sacked from The Quireboys, and Ugly Kid Joe announcing a new tour; spoiler alert, the US is once again not included.
