We will take more time over it after some teaching and discussion. QUESTION: What is the Lord's Supper? QUESTION: Why do we do it? What is it for? 1. What Did Jesus Do and Expect His Followers to Do, and Why? Luke 22.19-20 “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” ‘do this' - what is the ‘this'? New Testament tells us that we are all priests 1 Peter 2.9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” Who can take it? Sometimes, children or laypeople were denied the elements, but is that what Jesus intended? 4. Conclusions for Us Here and Now Five key issues It is about Jesus: Remembering Him is the primary purpose. It is a community meal: We gather together as a family of faith. We feast on Christ—together: It strengthens our community unity. ‘Unworthy' is not about sin per se: It's about treating each other with Christ-like love. Strictly speaking, no one is 'worthy'! Not about the elements or the rituals: Focus on Jesus and community. One of the hardest places to be angry with a person is at the supper table. It's nearly impossible to share a meal with someone with whom you are at odds with. Either you won't enjoy the food you are eating or you will be forced to leave the table and eat somewhere else. The flip side of this is when you are in a healthy relationship with another, sharing a meal is the best place to be; the conversation flows freely, the laughter is effortless and even the food tastes better! Here's the truth: To share a meal with someone you are at odds with requires reconciliation. For the Christian, we often describe our connection with God as a relationship. When we pledge our allegiance to God through baptism, we enter into a covenant relationship. There are moments when the relationship is amazing and transformative. Unfortunately there are times when the relationship is at odds and not because of God, but because of mine and your rebellious nature. Here's the problem, when we are at odds with God what are we to do? The guilt can be overwhelming, the shame paralyzing and the embarrassment distancing. We wonder if God will take us back? We blame ourselves for repeating the same offense again and again. We become convinced that this time, God's patience with us has finally run out. Here's what you need to know: Jesus knew this would happen. He knew that we would break our covenant relationship with him, and that we would need a way to reconcile the relationship. Ironically, he invites us to a meal table, a spiritual meal table designed specifically to bring about restoration and reconciliation. We call that meal, The Lord's Supper. "While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” ~ Mark 14:22-25 Unfortunately, for many Christians, The Lord's Supper (Communion) has simply become a memorial service, much like how we celebrate Memorial Day or Independence Day. The reality is that Jesus instituted this meal to be so much more then remembering. It's about participating in the work of the cross, it's about confessing our sin, and allowing Jesus to restore our relationship. Simply put, The Lord's Supper is multifaceted in what it does in our lives and in our church family.  To learn more about how The Lord's Supper is so transformative in our lives as disciples of Jesus, make sure and listen to part ten of Come, Follow, Me...where you will be invited to have a seat at the table. Maybe it's been a while for you. Maybe you're feeling disconnected from God. The best place to start is to accept Jesus' invitation and take a seat at the table.

Interesting to note that many cultures have a bread type food as a main staple of their culture: bread, tortillas, pasta, fry bread… It is needed for life. He gave his life for us. Acts 2:38 tells us: 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. We remember each Sunday by eating the Lord's Supper - Communion. Throughout the OT we see God giving the people celebrations to help them remember. The same is true for the Lord's Supper. We need help remembering.  O - Prayer…. K - Spend time with Jesus today. Don't let Satan trick you into thinking you're too busy to spend time with Jesus. You're too busy NOT to spend time with him. The origin and basis of Holy Communion is the Passover Meal, for in it we remember Christ our Passover Lamb, who was sacrificed for us. He fulfilled the prophetic picture of Passover, for by His Blood He released us from slavery to sin and from the dominion of the kingdom of darkness, and sets us free to live a new life with Him. Derek describes the original Passover in Exodus 12. The Passover Lamb provided 2 things: (1) the BLOOD, when applied, provided forgiveness for sin and protection from judgment, and (2) the FLESH, when eaten, provided physical healing for their bodies (Psalm 105:37). The type of Passover was fulfilled by Jesus who died as our Passover Lamb (1Cor 5:7). (1) He gave His BLOOD for us, to establish a New Covenant with God, providing forgiveness from sin and deliverance from Divine Judgment, and (2) He gave His FLESH to us, providing strength, health and life. In Communion, the WINE and the BREAD represents His BLOOD and His BODY (flesh) given for us. As there was healing in the Passover, so there is healing in Communion, which is the New Testament equivalent to the Passover Meal, for Jesus instituted Communion at a Passover Meal. At the Last Supper, Christ instituted the Lord's Supper (Communion) as the Memorial Feast of the New Covenant in His Blood by saying: “DO THIS in REMEMBRANCE of Me” (Luke 22:19, 1Cor 11:23-26). He transformed the Passover Meal into its New Covenant fulfilment, showing how all its details were prophetic pictures of how He would fulfil the Passover through His death and resurrection. Pastor Derek describes and demonstrates the detailed Order of Service for the Passover Meal, and relates it to Jesus' words and actions at the Last Supper. In particular he shows how the Afikomen provides a wonderful picture of the Gospel. The AFIKOMEN (representing the Son of God) is brought forth from the MATZA TOSH (the Godhead). Only the MIDDLE PIECE of the 3 pieces of bread (the Trinity) comes into manifestation (the AFIKOMEN), which represents CHRIST, the SON, coming forth out of God and revealed in human form, while the Father and Spirit remained invisible. The AFIKOMEN is a picture of Jesus: (1) UNLEAVENED BREAD (He is the SINLESS bread of life), (2) STRIPED, and (3) PIERCED. The AFIKOMEN was (1) BROKEN, signifying Jesus broken for us on the Cross – His DEATH (Luke 22:19a), and then it was (2) WRAPPED in a cloth, and hidden from sight (signifying His BURIAL). Later, the AFIKOMEN was brought forth from its hiding (burial) place. This symbolised Jesus appearing again, having been resurrected on the third day. Luke 22:19: “Jesus took BREAD (the AFIKOMEN = the resurrected Christ), gave THANKS, BLESSED it and BROKE it, and GAVE it to the disciples and said: “TAKE, EAT; this (AFIKOMEN) is My BODY, which is GIVEN for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” The Afikomen is eaten after its death, burial and resurrection, so in Communion the bread that we eat represents the risen Christ, who was blessed with every blessing on our behalf. Thus we partake of His blessed resurrection life. The Communion Bread is the Afikomen, representing the resurrection life of Christ, given to us. Jesus interpreted the Afikomen as Himself, risen from the dead and giving Himself to us to eat. When Jesus divided up (broke) the bread and gave it to the believers, this represented the resurrected Christ dividing, distributing and giving Himself to us to eat, saying: “I am the BREAD of LIFE” (John 6:35,48). Then came the 3rd CUP of SALVATION: “He took the CUP, after supper saying: “This CUP is the New Covenant in My Blood, which is shed for you...Then He gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying: “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My Blood of the New Covenant which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Luke 22:20, Matthew 26:27,28). This is the CUP of BLESSING that we drink at Communion (1Cor 10:16,17). Christ has GIVEN HIMSELF to us through His BLOOD and His RESURRECTION LIFE, and now it's up to us to EAT of His LIFE, and DRINK DEEPLY from His CUP of SALVATION and BLESSING.

The origin and basis of Holy Communion is the Passover Meal, for in it we remember Christ our Passover Lamb, who was sacrificed for us. He fulfilled the prophetic picture of Passover, for by His Blood He released us from slavery to sin and from the dominion of the kingdom of darkness, and sets us free to live a new life with Him. Derek describes the original Passover in Exodus 12. The Passover Lamb provided 2 things: (1) the BLOOD, when applied, provided forgiveness for sin and protection from judgment, and (2) the FLESH, when eaten, provided physical healing for their bodies (Psalm 105:37). The type of Passover was fulfilled by Jesus who died as our Passover Lamb (1Cor 5:7). (1) He gave His BLOOD for us, to establish a New Covenant with God, providing forgiveness from sin and deliverance from Divine Judgment, and (2) He gave His FLESH to us, providing strength, health and life. In Communion, the WINE and the BREAD represents His BLOOD and His BODY (flesh) given for us. As there was healing in the Passover, so there is healing in Communion, which is the New Testament equivalent to the Passover Meal, for Jesus instituted Communion at a Passover Meal. At the Last Supper, Christ instituted the Lord's Supper (Communion) as the Memorial Feast of the New Covenant in His Blood by saying: “DO THIS in REMEMBRANCE of Me” (Luke 22:19, 1Cor 11:23-26). He transformed the Passover Meal into its New Covenant fulfilment, showing how all its details were prophetic pictures of how He would fulfil the Passover through His death and resurrection. Pastor Derek describes and demonstrates the detailed Order of Service for the Passover Meal, and relates it to Jesus' words and actions at the Last Supper. In particular he shows how the Afikomen provides a wonderful picture of the Gospel. The AFIKOMEN (representing the Son of God) is brought forth from the MATZA TOSH (the Godhead). Only the MIDDLE PIECE of the 3 pieces of bread (the Trinity) comes into manifestation (the AFIKOMEN), which represents CHRIST, the SON, coming forth out of God and revealed in human form, while the Father and Spirit remained invisible. The AFIKOMEN is a picture of Jesus: (1) UNLEAVENED BREAD (He is the SINLESS bread of life), (2) STRIPED, and (3) PIERCED. The AFIKOMEN was (1) BROKEN, signifying Jesus broken for us on the Cross – His DEATH (Luke 22:19a), and then it was (2) WRAPPED in a cloth, and hidden from sight (signifying His BURIAL). Later, the AFIKOMEN was brought forth from its hiding (burial) place. This symbolised Jesus appearing again, having been resurrected on the third day. Luke 22:19: “Jesus took BREAD (the AFIKOMEN = the resurrected Christ), gave THANKS, BLESSED it and BROKE it, and GAVE it to the disciples and said: “TAKE, EAT; this (AFIKOMEN) is My BODY, which is GIVEN for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” The Afikomen is eaten after its death, burial and resurrection, so in Communion the bread that we eat represents the risen Christ, who was blessed with every blessing on our behalf. Thus we partake of His blessed resurrection life. The Communion Bread is the Afikomen, representing the resurrection life of Christ, given to us. Jesus interpreted the Afikomen as Himself, risen from the dead and giving Himself to us to eat. When Jesus divided up (broke) the bread and gave it to the believers, this represented the resurrected Christ dividing, distributing and giving Himself to us to eat, saying: “I am the BREAD of LIFE” (John 6:35,48). Then came the 3rd CUP of SALVATION: “He took the CUP, after supper saying: “This CUP is the New Covenant in My Blood, which is shed for you...Then He gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying: “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My Blood of the New Covenant which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Luke 22:20, Matthew 26:27,28). This is the CUP of BLESSING that we drink at Communion (1Cor 10:16,17). Christ has GIVEN HIMSELF to us through His BLOOD and His RESURRECTION LIFE, and now it's up to us to EAT of His LIFE, and DRINK DEEPLY from His CUP of SALVATION and BLESSING.

Sermon Notes Ephesians 3:21 NIV "…to [God] be glory in the church (ekklesia) and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." Our Mission: to become more like Jesus. The Global church is made up of every believer of every people group, language, and nation to the ends of the Earth. "We are Christians only, not the only Christians." The Local church is made up of a group of believers who agree to gather together in a specific location to serve each other and build each other up as we continue to fulfill God's will to the ends of the Earth. Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." - Acts‬ ‭2:42 NIV ‭‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread (the Lord's Supper/Communion) and to prayer." Acts‬ ‭2:43-44 NIV "Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common." Acts‬ ‭2:45-47a NIV "They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people." The early gathering of believers stood out for their generosity. Acts‬ ‭2:47b NIV "...and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." Acts‬ ‭4‬:‭36‬-‭37‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means 'son of encouragement'), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet." What would it be like to be such a generous giant that your nickname is son or daughter of encouragement? “The cross was not an isolated event in history that sprang up spontaneously. Rather, the atonement of Christ was the culmination, the climax of centuries of redemptive history. Ages before, God had set certain things in motion that reached their acme with the death of Jesus.” – RC Sproul ATONEMENT & COVENANT Dr. Sproul says; “It is impossible to fully understand the death of Christ apart from an understanding of the whole process of covenant that is worked out in the Old & New Testaments.” Do you agree with him, and why or why not? A covenant is a relationship between the Lord and His servants. In this relationship, the Lord verbally speaks to His servants, defining the covenant relationship. He tells them His name, His laws or stipulations, His blessings & His cursings. There is a verbal giving of the covenant, God tells us to “Obey my Voice” and “keep My covenant” (Exodus 19:5+many others). The covenant is also written: On Stone: - “And He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments, and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.” - Deuteronomy 4:13 In the Bible and on our Heart: – “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” - Jeremiah 31:33 - The Importance of God's Word. This is how God reveals Himself, through the Bible. Without the Bible there would be no covenants, there would be no Gospel, & there would be no salvation. We recognize 2 sacraments; Baptism and the Lord's Supper (Communion). (WCF – 28:1) “Baptism is a sacrament of the New Testament, ordained by Jesus Christ, not only for the solemn admission of the party baptized into the visible Church; but also to be unto him a sign and seal of the covenant of grace, of his ingrafting into Christ, of regeneration, of remission of sins, and of his giving up unto God, through Jesus Christ, to walk in the newness of life. Which sacrament is, by Christ's own appointment, to be continued in His Church until the end of the world.” Jesus made sure to identify with baptism and He made painstaking preparations in preparing PASSOVER. In the upper room, Jesus instituted another New Covenant – Explain how the Old Covenant Passover changes to the New Covenant? COVENANT BLESSINGS & CURSES A covenant has sanctions. Rewards or Penalties. Blessing or Curses. Read Deuteronomy 28:1-6. What is the significance of blessing & cursing to the world today? Explain the parallel between the two. Note the far-ranging extent of the curse of God. It extends over all of life. BLESSED: IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD Most people equate blessing with being happy. You have been preaching the beatitudes, and you gave a excellent explanation of the term blessing. Tell the folks that might be listening; does blessingmean being happy? Dr. Sproul talks about a Hebrew literary device called parallelism. You are a writer, what is parallelism? The curse is the exact opposite of the blessing. For the Jew, to be blessed was to have God draw near. In times of crisis, in times of tumult, and upheaval. It is a frightening time. On the night Jesus was betrayed, shortly before His arrest, trials and execution on the cross, He shares the Passover meal with His disciples. Jews had shared this meal every year for the previous 1500 years, celebrating God’s incredible deliverance from their bondage of slavery under the Egyptians. Yet Jesus flips this meal completely on its head, powerfully demonstrating to His disciples that this meal had always been a foreshadowing of Him. He is the sacrificial Lamb of God who came to redeem us from the bondage of sin and establish a new covenant with us based on His grace. Through this passage we’ll seek to understand why we celebrate the Lord’s Supper (Communion) as a church. We’ll re-examine the depth and power of the gospel that has redeemed us, is redeeming us, and will one day redeem us. This talk is part five of our series 'Mark Pt2' from Sunday 31st March 2019.

On the night Jesus was betrayed, shortly before His arrest, trials and execution on the cross, He shares the Passover meal with His disciples. Jews had shared this meal every year for the previous 1500 years, celebrating God’s incredible deliverance from their bondage of slavery under the Egyptians. Yet Jesus flips this meal completely on its head, powerfully demonstrating to His disciples that this meal had always been a foreshadowing of Him. He is the sacrificial Lamb of God who came to redeem us from the bondage of sin and establish a new covenant with us based on His grace. Through this passage we’ll seek to understand why we celebrate the Lord’s Supper (Communion) as a church. We’ll re-examine the depth and power of the gospel that has redeemed us, is redeeming us, and will one day redeem us. This talk is part five of our series 'Mark Pt2' from Sunday 31st March 2019.

Part 9 - The Lord’s Supper An Ordinance properly defined in a Christian context, is a religious ritual i.e. a ceremony or sacred observance. For the Bible believing Christian, there are only two Ordinances which concern us, namely that of the Lord’s Supper (Communion) and Baptism. On the eve of Jesus’ crucifixion, He desired one last time to eat the Passover meal with His disciples. It was at this feast that Jesus instituted what we know and celebrate as the Lord’s Supper; a memorial meal for the purpose of remembering of the events that were to take place on the morrow, namely His crucifixion in which the New Covenant would be established by the shedding of His precious blood. In this teaching part, we explore the meaning of Communion and try to bring clarity surrounding some of the misconceptions held by believers regarding this Holy Ordinance. We particularly focus on the administration of the Lord’s Supper, since it is at this point where many Bible believing Christians part company in their differing customs. Some Churches have Communion every Sunday, others once a month, once a quarter or even once a year! Some choose to major on the specific type of bread and wine that should be used. One Church allows for all in attendance to partake of it (including children) while another forbids anyone from taking it unless they are an active member of their particular Church. We seek in this ninth teaching part to address these issues biblically by bringing them to the light of God’s Word.
