Listen in with student debt experts and Board Member Drs. Tony Bartels and Rebecca Mears in this next installment of our Student Debt Series. In this episode we have three major topics we're addressing: 1) a new challenge for the almost new grads 2) New Grad Playbook webinar and 3) the latest student loan updates.   As always, we want to hear from YOU. Please share your thoughts by sending an email or joining the conversation.     GUEST BIOS: Dr. Tony Bartels Tony Bartels, DVM, MBA graduated in 2012 from the Colorado State University combined MBA/DVM program and is a VIN Foundation Board Member and Student Debt Expert, and an employee of the Veterinary Information Network (VIN). He and his wife, a small-animal internal medicine specialist practicing in Denver, have more than $400,000 in veterinary-school debt that they manage using federal income-driven repayment plans. By necessity (and now obsession), his professional activities include researching and speaking on veterinary-student debt, providing guidance to colleagues on loan-repayment strategies and contributing to VIN Foundation resources. Beyond debt, his professional interests include small- and exotic-animal practice. When he's not staring holes into his colleagues' student-loan data, Tony enjoys fly fishing, ice hockey, camping and exploring Colorado with his wife, Audra, daughter, Lucy, and their two rescued canines, Addi and Maggie. Dr. Rebecca Mears Rebecca Mears, DVM is from Lexington, KY, and a graduate of University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. Rebecca started her career as an equine general practitioner and is an active AAEP member, currently serving as a member of the AAEP DEI Committee. Her interest in student debt education began with keeping her own education costs lower and grew from there. This was supported by her involvement in the Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA), which she now gives back to as a National Advisor. In her time away from veterinary medicine, she can be found obsessing over plants and hosting impromptu dance parties. She is passionate about giving back to the profession and improving the lives of veterinarians, pre-vet and vet students.    LINKS AND INFORMATION: VIN Foundation Student Debt Center: https://vinfoundation.org/studentdebtcenter Check your current student loan servicers and other loan details -- VIN Foundation My Student Loans tool: http://www.vinfoundation.org/mystudentloans Loan Repayment Simulator: https://vinfoundation.org/loansim  VIN Foundation WikiDebt: https://vinfoundation.org/wikidebt VIN Foundation Webinars: https://vinfoundation.org/resources/webinars/ VIN Foundation get updates: https://vinfoundation.org/updates/ VIN Foundation GIVE page to support these programs & tools: https://vinfoundation.org/give Debt Repayment Prep Challenge: https://vinfoundation.org/resources/veterinary-student-debt/debt-repayment-prep-challenge/  May 7th webinar - New Graduate Student Loan Playbook: https://vinfoundation.org/resources/veterinary-new-grad-student-loan-repayment-playbook/ VIN Foundation Blog, Related Student Debt Blog posts:  Application for Federal Income-Driven Repayment Plans Reactivated: https://vinfoundation.org/application-for-income-driven-repayment-plans-reactivated/  Personalized student loan Help from VIN and VIN Foundation: https://vinfoundation.org/veterinary-student-loan-debt-help/  Income-Driven Repayment Plan Discretionary income calculations, WikiDebt: https://www.vin.com/studentdebtcenter/default.aspx?pid=14352&catId=74141&id=7249857  New Grad Student Loan Repayment Playbook: https://vinfoundation.org/resources/veterinary-new-grad-student-loan-repayment-playbook/  Borrow Better: https://vinfoundation.org/resources/borrow-better-veterinary-school-loan-debt/  Federal Student Aid Data, Consolidation, and Repayment Applications: https://studentaid.gov/ One-time Forgiveness Count Adjustment  https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/idr-account-adjustment Federal Student Loan Servicers: https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/repayment/servicers Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF): https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service Have a veterinary story you want to share? https://share.hsforms.com/1e6QkQvg2RI-wpDv59Byqkwcos60 Stay up to date with VIN Foundation updates: https://vinfoundation.org/updates/ Email VIN Foundation: studentdebt@vinfoundation.org Get updates to stay tuned for the VIN Foundation webinars on student debt.  You may learn more about the VIN Foundation, on the website, or join the conversation on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Tanvi shares her pivotal moment of when she started her first organization in India at the age of 19. It is called Becoming I Foundation and began as a platform for young people to connect with community development. The inspiration to start it came from frustration with what was happening around her, and having gone through a breakup that made her feel very small, she needed something to uplift her from that. This shift was so meaningful and a turning point because other then the intellectual experience of starting something, the emotional experience of starting something at that age that eventually became a young people's movement, was a unique growing experience. It gave Tanvi the confidence to try something she had never done before, enter rooms and make important asks, and lead people to action on things they are about. That moment lead the path for her career today, who she is and how she sees the world.Tanvi Girotra is an advisor and coach to global purpose-driven organizations and leaders. She calls New York and New Delhi home.Prior to starting her advisory practice 'Enable', Tanvi was an entrepreneur building new organizations, movements and campaigns in India to create solutions for systemic challenges in the education system. Through authentically moving and empowering people for large-scale change, she created a volunteer movement of young people that still continues to train young leaders for purposeful problem-solving. She is a National Advisor at GirlTrek - America's largest health movement focused on black women and their leadership. Is Innovation Stuck in Healthcare? Two Brothers Get to The Bottom of It

Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 15, 2024 46:21

In most industries, innovation leads to an improved product or service while ultimately helping to lower cost. Healthcare is the exception. Despite a constant pursuit of new science, technology, operational efficiencies, business models and more, healthcare expenditures in the U.S. have continued to increase for decades with little sign of bending the cost curve downward. What causes this phenomenon in U.S. healthcare, and what can we do about it? In their book, Why Not Better and Cheaper?: Healthcare and Innovation, twin brothers James B. Rebitzer and Robert S. Rebitzer offer answers to those questions.Jim and Bob's book brings together research on incentives, social norms, and market competition to argue that the healthcare system generates the wrong kinds of innovation. They contend that U.S. healthcare makes it too easy to profit from low-value innovations and too hard to profit from innovations that reduce the costs of care. As a result, we get a system where innovation abounds, but finding ways to deliver increased value at lower cost is remarkably ineffective. In this episode of Healthcare is Hard, Keith Figlioli talked to Jim, a professor at Boston University's School of Business, and Bob, National Advisor at Manatt Health, for an in-depth discussion about their work. Their conversation explored topics including:Misaligned incentives. Understanding how incentives work inside and between organizations has been a large focus of Jim's career in economics, and he now applies that work to the complex world of healthcare. As an example of that complexity that's all too common, Bob shared a story of a scientist and entrepreneur he advised who had developed a quick and inexpensive way to change how people walk in order to reduce pressure on the knee. While this could defer or obviate the need for common and expensive knee replacement surgeries, he discussed how difficult it would be to turn this idea into a profitable business since organizations across the healthcare ecosystem lack proper incentives to pay for it. He discussed why gain sharing would be the solution in every other part of the economy, and why it doesn't work in healthcare. The fourth vital sign of healthcare. People generally think of the healthcare system as having three vital signs – cost, quality and access. But Jim and Bob see a fourth vital sign that, so far, hasn't been recognized. In the long sweep of history, they say innovation matters just as much as the other three vital signs and stress that part of a healthy system should be the ability to produce innovations that increase value to patients while lowering costs.Innovation vs. irrational finance. In order to truly unlock innovation does the country's irrational finance and insurance system need to be fixed first? Bob and Jim share their thinking around this debate and their ultimate conclusion: not necessarily. Bob compares healthcare innovation to walking uphill in a fog… you never know when you're going to reach the top, but all you can do is place your foot in a somewhat higher place than it was before. To hear Keith, Bob and Jim discuss these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.

How To Help Teens Struggling With Mental Illness

Today's Takeaway with Florine Mark

WITH Dr. Don Grant, 2022 President of the American Psychological Association, Society for Media Psychology and Technology and Chair of the American Psychological Association, Device Management and Intelligence Committee and National Advisor of Healthy Device Management for Newport Healthcare          Did you know we're currently in the midst of a national mental health crisis for teens and young adults? Sadly, it's true. Over the past few years, we've seen a dramatic increase in the number of teen suicides along with soaring rates of teenage depression, substance abuse, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, and self-harming behaviors. Suicide is now the third-leading cause of death among 15‒24-year-olds, exceeded only by accidental deaths and homicide. A 2021 study found that 48% of young people admitted to struggling with mental health issues and more than one-third of those went untreated. A recent study conducted by the National Institute of Health indicated that for young children diagnosed with depression and anxiety, approximately half of their mental health issues were evident by age 14.   Although psychological counseling and medication are available for children as young as five years of age who have clinically diagnosed mental problems, roughly two-thirds of these children have not received treatment or proper medical intervention. Perhaps now, more than ever before, we need to be aware of the warning signs and symptoms so that vulnerable, at-risk young people can feel supported and understood and get the early intervention they may need.   If you want to learn more about how we can help young people who may be struggling with mental health issues, please listen to my interview with Dr. Don Grant, 2022 President of the American Psychological Association, Society for Media Psychology and Technology, and Chair of the American Psychological Association, Device Management, and Intelligence Committee.   What You'll Hear in This Episode: What are some of the primary mental health disorders for teens and young adults? What happened in 2012 for us to see a spike in depression, anxiety, and suicide? What are some of the symptoms that parents and educators have to watch out for? What are some of the primary mental health disorders for teens and young adults? How to notice if your kids are suffering from what Don calls #compare and #despair. What to do if you notice a difference in your child's social media. How can filters on social media damage a teen's self-confidence and self-image? How can parents talk to their kids about online bullying? What is the online disinhibition effect? What are cyberbullying and cyber aggression? The three different people that can be involved in a cyber-aggressive act, whether it's in real life or online. What parents need to know before they give their kids their first device.   Today's Takeaway: A variety of factors such as poverty, fear of global warming along with the pandemic, and excessive consumption of social media have contributed to the rise in mental health issues for young people and adults. Increased rates of low self-esteem, stress, and anxiety have left this generation far more vulnerable to incidents of bullying, fears of being ostracized, and chronic depression. Young people who experience recurring incidents of abuse or chronic neglect or witness domestic violence, or parental mental health or substance abuse problems are particularly vulnerable. The increasing number of children as young as ten years old attempting suicide is a particularly alarming statistic. There is help available but early intervention is critical. Teaching young children to modify their thoughts and behavior is far more effective at an early age. Inpatient programs may offer the best chance of success. It's important we don't allow shame or stigmatization to take precedence over obtaining early treatment and intervention for a young person in crisis. Remember every day is a gift and the gift we get from recognizing when a young person is struggling and getting them the help they need can make a huge difference not only in their childhood but also in their mental health as an adult as well. I'm Florine Mark and that's “Today's Takeaway.”   Quotes: “Look at your kids and their behavior. If you see a big change, then certainly investigate what's going on.” — Don “We have to remember, social media is completely self-curated, we can create that store window in any way we want.” — Don  “If anyone, and especially a teenager is posting anything on social media, what do they need? Why are they putting it out there? — Don “It's the kid and adults as well. They have FOMO. They're feeling like they're not current. They're feeling like they're not relevant.” — Don “Cyberbullying is part of cyber aggression, and it can look a lot of different ways.” — Don “The first thing I tell parents is: model behavior.” — Don “There is no seat belt for social media.” — Don   Brought to You By: Florine Mark   Mentioned in This Episode: American Psychological Association

Ewan is the passionate and energising tour de force behind NoTosh a company that he founded to help people to think differently and change the way that they function as individuals, as part of a team and as part of an organisation. He's a highly-regarded keynote speaker and host at events around the world, marrying intense prep work and a natural capacity to listen and shine a light on the best stories participants have to share. As a French and German high school teacher in Scotland, Ewan wanted to find new ways to help students engage with learning – he felt strongly that technology was both critical to achieving this and remained underused in the classroom, so his classes were among the first in Europe to podcast and blog as part of their daily learning. The classroom also resembled a French cafe complete with coffee and the smell of warm patisserie. A hula hoop placed at the front of the classroom was the only place you could stand if you wanted to speak English...the same rules applied to the headteacher as they did the students, as he wanted them "immersed in language". Ewan spent three years taking these ideas to schools around Scotland, as National Advisor on Learning and Technology Futures for the Scottish Government. Joining Channel 4 as their Digital Commissioner in 2008 was a step in a different direction. But it was while he was with Channel 4 that he became fascinated by the strategies and tactics that his creative colleagues used to create imaginative and truly engaging digital services for young people. Could he take this insight and make it work in an education setting? Yes, I reckoned he could... and that's how NoTosh came about. This is a fascinating conversation with so many learning points for teachers, educators and leaders in any capacity. As the name suggests, NoTosh is a jargon-free but game-changing strategic consultancy with a passion for learning and a conviction that innovation and creativity can change the way people think, the way they learn and the way they work A highly regarded keynote speaker at events around the world, Ewan is also the author of How To Come Up With Great Ideas and Actually Make Them Happen and regularly writes about learning on his blog (and previously here). Ewan's professional career started as a French and German high school teacher in Scotland back in the 1990s. He wanted to find new ways to help students engage with their learning and felt strongly that technology was both critical to this and underused in the classroom, so his classes were among the first in Europe to podcast and blog as part of their daily learning. Ewan then became the National Advisor on Learning and Technology Futures for the Scottish Government, and in 2006, with some friends in a pub in Edinburgh he began Teachmeet as a way to enable teachers to network and learn from peers and disrupt the traditional model of prescribed teacher professional development. In 2008, Ewan became the Digital Commissioner at Channel 4. It was there that he became fascinated by the strategies and tactics that colleagues were using to create imaginative and engaging digital services for young people. #16 - What is the one thing that you could do to help your students reach their potential and achieve whatever they want in life? What about an agriculture program that will help them succeed not only in class but also in their lives as well?FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agriculture education at middle school and high school level. James Woodard is the national FFA advisor, board chair, and the former superintended of Morgan Charter School Systems in Madison, Georgia. His 7th and 10th-grade teachers plus his parent’s guidance led him to agriculture education when he was a troubled kid heading in the wrong direction. The role of the teacher is to engage students while helping them to realize and work towards their full potential. James has a philosophy of touching and motivating through the heart using the three Rs (rigor, relevance, and relationship). He believes that the educator has to first create a relationship with their students and then motivate them to be what they intend to be. He shares a story of how his teacher encouraged him to take on public speaking after noticing his speech impediment.Students of agriculture education receive a basic certification. There is a network in the agriculture education program that educators can find competition through FFA. Friendships and mentorships can be formed through these networks. There is a power in conducting servant leadership- leading your team with your support and guidance as opposed to assigning them tasks. James explains the qualities he believes make a power teacher- those that separate them from the crowd in dealing with students, colleagues, and their leaders.Key Moments:[1:51] He explains the role of FFA in preparing young people with their careers.[3:13] How James’ troubled youth, his two teachers, and his parents’ guidance led him to FFA. [8:43] The role of the teacher in engaging students to reach their potential.[11:34] How to build a relationship and engage with your students individually.[16:35] James narrates a story of how his teacher encouraged him to participate in public speaking to improve his speech impediment. [19:06] He explains some of the initiatives that have expanded the academic aspect of the FFA program making it successful. [23:39] How educators can benefit from the FFA agriculture program.[25:40] The clipboard leadership vs. towel leadership- the importance of servant leadership. [29:56] James explains the qualities that make a powerful teacher. Quotes:“It is the relationship that builds the heart for a servant type leadership.”- James Woodard [27:32]“Improvement is a process. I don’t expect anyone to be perfect, but I do expect them to improve, and to reflect.”- James Woodard [32:18]Find Dr. Woodard on:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-woodard-543a1863/Website: https://www.ffa.org/Twitter: https://twitter.com/NationalFFAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/nationalffa/ Contact Nick:Website: https://nickzizi.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/nickziziInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/nickzizi/?hl=en

About EwanLeading projects around the world for clients in education and industry, Ewan is the passionate and energising tour de force behind NoTosh. A highly-regarded keynote speaker at events around the world, he's also the author of How To Come Up With Great Ideas and Actually Make Them Happen and regularly writes about learning on our NoTosh Medium Blog."As a French and German high school teacher in Scotland back in the 1990s, I wanted to find new ways to help students engage with my subjects – I felt strongly that technology was both critical to achieving this and remained underused in the classroom, so my classes were among the first in Europe to podcast and blog as part of their daily learning."From here, it was a reasonably logical step to become National Advisor on Learning and Technology Futures for the Scottish Government... although joining Channel 4 as their Digital Commissioner in 2008 was a step in a different direction. But it was while I was with Channel 4 that I became fascinated by the strategies and tactics that my creative colleagues used to create imaginative and truly engaging digital services for young people. Could I take this insight and make it work in an education setting? Yes, I reckoned I could... and that's how NoTosh came about."Connect With EwanWebsite: https://notosh.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ewanmcintoshBlog: https://medium.com/notoshFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/NoToshLearningSpecial thanks to Bronx based band Conversing with Oceans and Alex Bondarev for creating the podcast music.https://www.conversingwithoceans.com/
