In this episode, we will look at the educational changes in British Columbia, which launched a new curriculum in September 2016.  We will look at what changed, the rationales for such changes, criticisms, and how politics can affect education. From forming friendships, to periodic check-ins, to helping them wade through the complicated maze of choosing an home, car, insurance plan and completing taxes, Tim and Chris see many opportunities for serving the pastor and allowing them to be able to focus on the care of the congregation through the Word and preaching. Deacons can alleviate the loneliness often felt by pastors and their families by strengthening the pastor-deacon relationship, encouraging the women of the church to befriend the pastor's wife all which can lead to promoting unity within the church. Join us as we explore meaningful ways deacons can be a blessing to their pastors, all while growing together in Christ.Referenced in this episode:OPC Committee on Ministerial Care's websitePastor Retreat information (found on the CMC website)Healthcare.govOPC Insurance BenefitsYou can find all of our episodes at thereformeddeacon.org. Together, they explore the origins and missions of these committees, the work being done in diaconal ministries, and how local deacons can use the connected church to access support in areas of the diaconate including caring for your pastor. John talks about the Obadiah Fund, a special fund for retired ministers, their wives and minister's widows. This fund was initiated to provide special care and concern to those in the OPC who have sacrificed so much for the ministry of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The fund was previously overseen by the OPC Committee on Diaconal Ministries but is now managed by the OPC Committee on Ministerial Care. You'll hear about the CDM's resources, online and in person by way of presbytery-level and local diaconal summits. What did you think? Text us!In this episode, Tim Hopper, a deacon at Shiloh OPC in Raleigh, North Carolina, chairman of the Presbytery of the Southeast Diaconal Committee  and a member of the OPC Committee on Diaconal Ministries reminds us that being a deacon doesn't stand on its own, but is just a part of  Christ's church. Tim says it's good that we have Presbyteries and denominational committees to serve in these ways. But ultimately, Christ hasn't established and ordained these committees. He has  given us each our own offices and governments of our own congregations and we must  remember that it's the greatest calling that we've been given. As a result, there is  opportunity, as members of our various committees, to serve and build up our local churches and local diaconates. In this session, Tim shares how that  might been done through Presbyterian Diaconal Committee.Referenced in this episode:OPCCDM.org (where you can find lots of diaconal resources)Union Seminary Magazine 1903: The Deacon RC ReedThe Mercy Minute quarterly e-newsletterC. Writer, comedian, and Lydia Tár's former publicist Daniella Mazzio joins to discuss Gus Van Sant's sharp, pitch-black satire of media, true crime, and a patently American brand of late 20th Century celebrity, 'To Die For'. The film is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, itself inspired by the true life trial of Pamela Smart, who seduced a teenage boy and coerced him and a friend to murder Smart's husband. The film features an excellent ensemble cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, Illeana Douglas, and a career-best Nicole Kidman. We discuss 'To Die For' as a nexus of many careers at compelling inflection points: Nicole Kidman breaking into leading woman roles while married to Tom Cruise, Gus Van Sant on the eve of his career skyrocketing to new heights with the success of the following year's 'Good Will Hunting', and the chance casting of Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix who would later become in-laws and artistic collaborators. Then, we examine the brilliant, kaleidoscopic script by 'The Graduate' screenwriter Buck Henry and how the film's patchwork construction foregrounds it thematically rich details. Finally, we discuss the real life inspiration for the film as well as the way the movie's indictment of the American media landscape anticipated elements of the OJ Simpson trial, which was playing out during the film's production and concluded just days before its release. (Editor's Note: This episode was recorded before OJ Simpson's death on April 10th, 2024 at the age of 76).Follow Daniella Mazzio on Twitter. In this episode, Shiloh OPC, Raleigh, NC Deacon and CDM member Tim Hopper welcomes Dr. Jim Newheiser, professor at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC and author of the book, "Money, Debt and Finances: Critical Questions and Answers." Dr. Newheiser says the goal of his book is to bring together finance, accounting, and investing with a Biblical perspective that is rooted in sound theology. "I really believe in the sufficiency of Scripture to guide us in life," he says.  In this episode, Dr. Newheiser wisely points out that we have freedom to spend money, "and we can't tell someone how to spend, but to use godly wisdom. So much of our life involves our vocation, our responsibility to provide, [and] our stewardship of the resources God has given us."Referenced in this episode:"Money, Debt and Finances: Critical Questions and Answers" by Dr. Jim Newheiser Review of "Money, Debt and Finances: Critical Questions and Answers" from New Horizons December 2021Financial Crisis: What to Do When the Bottom Drops Out by Jim NewheiserMoney: Seeking God's Wisdom (31-Day Devotionals for Life) by Jim NewheiserHow to Love Difficult Parents: Wisdom for a Challenging Relationship by Jim NewheiserThe Institue for Biblical Counseling and DiscipleshipYou can find all of our episodes at thereformeddeacon.org. It intercepts all calls that involve the filesystem in Python - e.g open(), shutil, or pathlib.Path. This is completely transparent - your functional code does not know or need to know that under the hood it's been disconnected from the actual filesystem. The nice thing about this is that you don't have to go patching open using mock_open - which works fine, but gets annoying quickly for more complex test scenarios. E.g Doing a mkdir -p before a file write to ensure parent dirs exist. What it looks like without a fake filesystem: in_bytes = b"""[table] foo = "bar" # String """ # read with patch('pypyr.toml.open', mock_open(read_data=in_bytes)) as mocked_open: payload = toml.read_file('arb/path.in') # write with io.BytesIO() as out_bytes: with patch('pypyr.toml.open', mock_open()) as mock_output: mock_output.return_value.write.side_effect = out_bytes.write toml.write_file('arb/out.toml', payload) out_str = out_bytes.getvalue().decode() mock_output.assert_called_once_with('arb/out.toml', 'wb') assert out_str == """[table] foo = "bar" """ If you've ever tried to patch/mock out pathlib, you'll know the pain! Also, no more annoying test clean-up routines or tempfile - as soon as the fake filesystem goes out of scope, it's gone, no clean-up required. Not a flash in the pan - long history: originally developed by Mike Bland at Google back in 2006. Open sourced in 2011 on Google Code. Moved to Github and nowadays maintained by John McGehee. This has been especially useful for pypyr, because as a task-runner or automation tool pypyr deals with wrangling config files on disk a LOT (reading, generating, editing, token replacing, globs, different encodings), so this makes testing so much easier. Especially to keep on hitting the 100% test coverage bar! Works great with pytest with the provided fs fixture. Just add the fs fixture to a test, and all code under test will use the fake filesystem. Dynamically switch between Linux, MacOs & Windows filesystems. Set up paths/files in your fake filesystem as part of test setup with some neat helper functions. Very responsive maintainers - I had a PR merged in less than half a day. Shoutout to mrbean-bremen. Docs here: http://jmcgeheeiv.github.io/pyfakefs/release/ Github here: https://github.com/jmcgeheeiv/pyfakefs Real world example: @patch('pypyr.config.config.default_encoding', new='utf-16') def test_json_pass_with_encoding(fs): """Relative path to json should succeed with encoding.""" # arrange in_path = './tests/testfiles/test.json' fs.create_file(in_path, contents="""{ "key1": "value1", "key2": "value2", "key3": "value3" } """, encoding='utf-16') # act context = pypyr.parser.jsonfile.get_parsed_context([in_path]) # assert assert context == { "key1": "value1", "key2": "value2", "key3": "value3" } def test_json_parse_not_mapping_at_root(fs): """Not mapping at root level raises.""" # arrange in_path = './tests/testfiles/singleliteral.json' fs.create_file(in_path, contents='123') # act with pytest.raises(TypeError) as err_info: pypyr.parser.jsonfile.get_parsed_context([in_path]) # assert assert str(err_info.value) == ( "json input should describe an object at the top " "level. To complement enum.IntEnum in the standard library. Supports python 3.6+. Example usage: class HttpMethod(StrEnum): GET = auto() POST = auto() PUT = auto() DELETE = auto() assert HttpMethod.GET == "GET" Use wherever you can use strings, basically: ## You can use StrEnum values just like strings: import urllib.request req = urllib.request.Request('https://www.python.org/', method=HttpMethod.HEAD) with urllib.request.urlopen(req) as response: html = response.read() Can auto-translate casing with LowercaseStrEnum and UppercaseStrEnum. Leave the turtles in the late 80ies. Partly inspired by/continuation of last week's episode's mention of running subprocesses from Python. Article by Itamar Turner-Trauring Please Stop Writing Shell Scripts https://pythonspeed.com/articles/shell-scripts/ Aims mostly at bash, but I'll happily include bourne, zsh etc. under the same dictum If nothing else, solid listing of common pitfalls/gotchas with bash and their remedies, which is educational enough in and of itself already. TLDR; Error handling in shell is hard, but also surprising if you're not particularly steeped in the ways of the shell. Error resumes next, unset vars don't raise errors, piping & sub shells errs thrown away If you really-eally HAVE to shell, you prob want this boilerplate on top (aka unofficial bash strict mode: #!/bin/bash set -euo pipefail IFS=$'nt' This will, -e: fail immediately on error -u: fail on Unset vars -o pipefail: raise immediately when piping IFS: set Internal Field Separator to newline | tab, rather than space | newline | tab. Prevents surprises when iterating over strings with spaces in them Itamar lists common counter-arguments from shell script die-hards: It's always there! But so is the runtime of whatever you're actually coding in, and in the case of a build CI server. . .almost by definition. Git gud! (I'm paraphrasing) Shell-check (linting for bash, basically) The article is short & sweet - mercifully so in these days of padded content. The rest is going to be me musing out loud, so don't blame the OG author. So expanding on this, I think there're a couple of things going on here: If anything, the author is going a bit soft on your average shell script. If you're just calling a couple of commands in a row, okay, fine. But the moment you start worrying about retrying on failure, parsing some values into or out of some json, conditional branching - which, if you are writing any sort of automation script that interacts with other systems, you WILL be doing - shell scripts are an unproductive malarial nightmare. Much the same point applies to Makefile. It's an amazing tool, but it's also misused for things it was never really meant to do. You end up with Makefiles that call shell scripts that call Makefiles. . . Given that coding involves automating stuff, amazingly often the actual automation of the development process itself is deprioritized & unbudgeted. Sort of like the shoemaker's kid not having shoes. Partly because when management has to choose between shiny new features and automation, shiny new features win every time. Partly because techies will just "quickly" do a thing in shell to solve the immediate problem… Which then becomes part of the firmament like a dead dinosaur that fossilises and more and more inscrutable layers accrete on top of the original "simple" script. Partly because coders would rather get on with clever but marginal micro-optimisations and arguing over important stuff like spaces vs tabs, rather than do the drudge work of automating the development/deployment workflow. There's the glimmering of a point in there somewhere: when you have to choose between shiny new features & more backoffice automation, shiny new features probably win. Your competitiveness in the marketplace might well depend on this. BUT, we shouldn't allow the false idea that shell scripts are "quicker" or "lighter touch" to sneak in there alongside the brutal commercial reality of trade-offs on available budget & time. If you have to automate quickly, it's more sensible to use a task-runner or just your actual programming language. If you're in python already, you're in luck, python's GREAT for this. Don't confuse excellent cli programs like git , curl , awscli, sed or awk with a shell script. These are executables, you don't need the shell to invoke these. Aside from these empirical factors, a couple of psychological factors also. Dealing with hairy shell scripts is almost a Technocratic rite of passage - coupled with imposter syndrome, it's easy to be intimidated by the Shell Bros who're steeped in the arcana of bash. It's the tech equivalent of "back in my day, we didn't even have ", as if this is a justification for things being more difficult than they need to be ever thereafter. This isn't Elden Ring, the extra difficulty doesn't make it more fun. You're trying to get business critical work done, reliably & quickly, so you can get on with those new shiny features that actually pay the bills. Extras Michael: A changing of the guard Firefox → Vivaldi (here's a little more info on the state of Firefox/Mozilla financially) (threat team is particularly troubling) Google email/drive/etc → Zoho @gmail.com to @customdomain.com Google search → DuckDuckGo BTW Calendar apps/integrations and email clients are trouble Joke: A missed opportunity - and cybersecurity

Gary and Frank welcome one of the finest actors we've ever had the pleasure to meet to Booth One! Francis Guinan has been with the Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble since 1979 and has appeared in a remarkable number of shows. Check out the list of past productions on his Steppenwolf bio. We have seen many of them and his work is simply not to be missed. Speaking of not to be missed...he is currently appearing in a world premiere of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Bruce Norris's Downstate alongside a breathtaking ensemble cast. Beautifully staged by Tony award winner Pam MacKinnon, it is a co-production with the National Theatre of Great Britain and stars several actors from there, including the marvelous Cecilia Noble. The Steppenwolf ensemble members (Glenn David, K. Todd Freeman, Francis Guinan, and Tim Hopper) are all just astonishing. Our good friend, Laura Glenn is Downstate's fabulous stage manager. The production will travel to London in the spring of 2019. Here are a couple of Downstate production shots:           Fran's first show with Steppenwolf was The Real Inspector Hound. Learn more about his illustrious career there in this article from 2009. One of our favorite recent performances was in The Rembrandt, working opposite his dear friend, the late John Mahoney. Of his relationship with John, he told us they had worked together s0 often and that their 30 years of shared history was "present in every glance." Fran said John was immensely generous on stage and off...Check out this Chicago Tonight interview with John and Fran talking about the last show they would do together. A shot with the the great Audrey Francis in You Got Older: Francis talks about the magic that only happens in a theater. How sometimes you can say a line to an audience of 300 or more people and then there is total silence. A collective holding of breath. And that feeling is not like anything else. He talks about the vibrance and truth of the Chicago style that goes back to the Compass Players. He thanks "the Godfather of Chicago Theatre, Sheldon Patinkin for teaching so many people in our community to "Always Say Yes." That it's not about you. It is all to the benefit of the story. Whatever your fellow actor throws out there, accept it and play that moment, even if it's very different from the night before. Kiss of Death: Carol Hall Carol Hall, a songwriter who wrote the music and lyrics for "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", which was about a brothel called the Chicken Ranch (because customers often paid with chickens), died on October 11 at age 82. Here is an excerpt from her NYT obit:"Staying behind the scenes remained her preference. She wrote three songs for “Free to Be … You and Me,” the 1972 children’s album (and television special) conceived by Marlo Thomas. One was “It’s All Right to Cry,” performed by Rosey Grier, a former professional football player. She also wrote for Sesame Street and Barbra Streisand.
