If you've ever thought “meditation is not for me, I can't do it,” you are not alone! Even our guest and energy expert Rachel Hatteberg Walt felt that way until she developed practices that are practical, grounding, and relaxing. I know we can all use more of that in our daily routine, so in this episode, Rachel is busting some meditation myths so you can find your zen in ways that fit your unique lifestyle and preferences. After you listen to this episode, you can grab Rachel's meditation library here.   Rachel is a comPASSIONATE and creative soul that thrives on alone time but can't survive without her loved ones, the outdoors, and following her curiosity. She is one that gets stuff done but also stops to notice the birds in the trees (especially the two owls that live in her backyard!). She is a mom of 3, Speech-Language Pathologist, Meditation Teacher, Reiki Master, OBSESSED with Human Design, and Founder of Craftingood where she is supporting people in changing the world from the inside out. Connect with Rachel! Instagram Website  Some key takeaways about meditation include: An easy intro to meditation is simply bringing awareness to your senses when you're doing a task. If you're washing dishes, bring awareness to how the warm water and bubbles feel on your skin, or how the soap smells. This mindfulness can instantly calm your body and mind. Keep a notepad near you or keep a running list on your notes app of all the random thoughts that you're holding onto. Maybe it's a to-do list item you want to remember, or anxiety you're having about an upcoming project, capture it so you can quiet your mind. When you find yourself feeling stressed and anxious, place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly. Take a deep breath in and feel which hand is moving more. You want your belly - not your chest - to be filling up with air, so focus on your breathing until you feel the hand on your belly moving in and out with each breath.   Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that's me!). My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn't lighting them up, and what they did to change that. New Year’s resolutions aren’t like ordinary goals. In theory they have a far more powerful effect on our psyche because the start of a new year symbolizes new beginnings, a new chapter and a clean slate. Nevertheless, researchers tell us that over 1/2 of us will fail to commit to their New Year resolutions past six months. No sooner have we set our resolutions and announced them on social media, we find ourselves finding reasons to give them up. So why then should meditation and mindfulness be the first two resolutions on your list? Because life is unpredictable, stress is normal and mindfulness can help you with all of it. A mindful meditation practice can helps you develop enough stillness to become aware of your internal state and the forces that drive your day to day behavior. In this way your meditation practice can go a long way to helping you keep your other promises to yourself! It also allows us the time and space to sit with difficult feelings and make better choices toward more helpful behavior. Finally, our time in meditation naturally spills over to become everyday mindfulness and the next thing you know, you're actually paying attention to the actual moments of your actual life! How radical! Biography: Nick Stein is an award-winning TV Producer and Show-Runner who has produced countless hours of non-fiction television for myriad networks and production companies for the past 40 years. Most recently, as the Series Producer of the National Geographic Channel’s “Border Wars” series, Stein and his crews gained unparalleled access to contested areas of the U.S. /Mexican border, embedding with the operational units of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, ICE, DEA and the Coast Guard. As a result of witnessing the extreme psychological and physical suffering so prevalent in the border zone, Stein began a journey from meditation practitioner to mindfulness meditation facilitator by studying at UCLA’s Mindfulness Awareness Research Center (MARC) and attending various silent retreats in locations such as Spirit Rock. After completing two years of MARC’s Intensive Practice Program (IPP), Stein was accepted into the Engaged Mindfulness Institute’s (EMI) inaugural class and received a Certification of Mindfulness Facilitation in June 2016. Due to years of immersive work with the men and women of law enforcement who serve along the U.S. Border, Stein has dedicated himself to introducing the concepts and techniques of mindfulness meditation to foster resilience in this community. He has traveled to New Mexico, Texas and Washington D.C. to bring this knowledge to U.S. Border Patrol agents and CBP’s Officer of Field Operations Officers and Chaplains. In addition, his work is expanding to local and regional law enforcement departments in the San Francisco East Bay area and most recently, to the Greater Cambridge Massachusetts area. How can we be committed to bettering ourselves, but also be mindful? CAN those two things coexist? In early September, my good friend Elena Thurston asked me that question and if she could interview for her community about the practical side of mindfulness techniques. And it turned into an awesome conversation that I cannot WAIT to share with you! In today's podcast episode, we're turning the tables and I AM BEING INTERVIEWED by someone else, which is so fun, and we're discussing practical mindfulness techniques to live your best life! We talk about the practical side of journaling, of meditation, and of why judgment is such a difficult thing to balance! How To Improve Your Productivity in 10 Minutes A Day How To Improve Your Productivity in 10 Minutes A Day, Creativity and Focus by Slowing Down for Just 10 Minutes a Day Meditation might seem like a waste of time to a busy person but if you are a business person struggling to make ends meet, a busy mum or a student cramming for exams, taking 10 minutes out every day might seem like a luxury that can’t be easily afforded. Yet, even scientists are rapidly coming to accept that meditation does more than reduce stress and anxiety. Creativity, memory and even longevity improve with regular meditation. It is thought that every minute that a person invests in meditation gets added back by way of real world benefits. It is a kind of madness not to meditate. Our guest on this edition of Business Connections Live is Tom Evans an ex-BBC TV who changed career direction in his 40s and is now the author of The Authority Guide to Practical Mindfulness, and 12 other books. Previously in several episodes I mentioned my method I used to memorize some random information. I did not use it to memorize text books, maybe you can try. But I used it to learn English on my own. I had to memorize lots and lots of words. I used it to study Latin when I was at the university. I learned shorthand. Yes I was writing all my lectures 25-30 years ago using shorthand. And you know what, I can still write, even though I got a bit rusty since I haven’t used it for several decades.

About the book: Introverts are powerful observers and creators. If you are an introvert, this book will show you how to tap into your inherent introvert strengths and “awaken” your potential using mindfulness meditations and cognitive behavioral techniques. In a world that favors the outgoing, gregarious extrovert, being an introvert can be difficult. But the truth is that introverts have distinct advantages—as long as they know how to use them. Unlike extroverts, who draw their energy from social interaction, your energy comes from quiet reflection. Is it any wonder then, that mindfulness can help you hone your natural talents? In The Awakened Introvert, mindfulness expert and card-carrying introvert Arnie Kozak provides a comprehensive set of mindfulness and cognitive behavioral tools to help you maximize your introvert strengths (such as rich access to your interior) while minimizing your introvert weaknesses (such as a tendency toward worry and rumination). In the book, you’ll learn powerful strategies to help you monitor your energy; recharge after social interactions; improve social and communication skills; and take advantage of your capacity for quiet reflection, and sweet, sweet solitude. If you’re looking to unlock the full potential of your unique introvert brain, this book provides a fun, practical, and authentic “user’s manual.” About the author: Long before mindfulness was fashionable, Arnie Kozak, was studying, practicing, and teaching mindfulness and Buddhist psychology. Beginning with a journey to India in the 80′s, Arnie began his lifelong practice in mindfulness meditation. Intent on finding a way to bring the practical healing attributes of mindfulness he began incorporating these techniques in his private practice. In 2002 Dr. Kozak created Exquisite Mind in Burlington, Vermont as a vehicle that could expand the value of mindfulness to larger audiences including professionals and corporations, health care providers, public groups and, most recently with Exquisite Mind Golf, amateur and professional golfers. His first book, Wild Chickens and Petty Tyrants: 108 Metaphors for Mindfulness (Wisdom Publications, 2009) is a thoughtful, funny, and inspiring translation of mindfulness practice through the inventive use of metaphor applicable to our daily lives. It has been translated into three languages. His second book, The Everything Buddhism Book, is an accessible introduction to the Buddha’s wisdom and the Buddhist traditions. The Everything Guide to the Introvert Edge and Mindfulness A-Z: 108 Insights for Awakening Now are forthcoming books. Arnie’s ability to translate ancient healing traditions into pragmatic applications suitable for modern lifestyles through the use of metaphors have made him a contributing voice in the Mindfulness Revolution.
