In this episode, Mallory Willsea speaks with Joshua Charles, Director of Web Strategy and Technology at Rutgers Business School, live from HighEdWeb. They discuss Joshua's session on advancing into senior leadership roles in higher ed, focusing on practical steps for career growth, team advancement, and personal development. If you're an aspiring leader looking for actionable strategies to take your career to the next level, this episode is packed with invaluable advice.Key TakeawaysBuild cross-campus partnerships: Collaborate beyond your team and personalize communications to foster stronger relationships.Focus on outcomes, not processes: Empower your team by focusing on goals and giving them the freedom to experiment and innovate.Invest in personal growth: Attend conferences, network, and join professional development opportunities to build visibility and leadership skills.Be an advocate for your team: Champion their growth and success, even if it means encouraging them to explore opportunities outside your organization.Leadership visibility: Know your campus leadership and tailor your communication to each decision-maker's priorities and style. How do you transition to a senior leadership role in higher education?Joshua's session at HighEdWeb focused on helping mid-career professionals, those in managerial roles for 3 to 7 years, to move into senior leadership positions. One of the key strategies he emphasizes is building partnerships across the campus. Rather than staying siloed within your team, you should reach out to colleagues from other departments, focusing on how your work impacts their day-to-day operations. Personalizing your communication and understanding their challenges is crucial for gaining support and collaboration, which can help advance your career within the institution. What should leaders do to advocate for their teams?Joshua shares that an important aspect of leadership is being your team's biggest advocate. He reflects on his own leadership journey and how his desire to create a supportive environment stems from wanting to be the type of leader he wished he had earlier in his career. By focusing on outcomes rather than micromanaging processes, leaders can give their teams the autonomy to innovate, experiment, and grow. Joshua stresses that advocating for your team doesn't stop at their current role—sometimes, it's about encouraging team members to seek opportunities outside the organization if that's what will help them grow professionally. What advice does Joshua offer for aspiring leaders to advance their own careers?Joshua underscores the importance of investing in oneself. He encourages leaders to join professional organizations, volunteer, attend conferences like HighEdWeb, and take opportunities to speak, present, or participate in podcasts. This, he argues, builds personal branding and visibility, both of which are critical for career advancement. Networking outside of your immediate environment can open doors to opportunities that may not even be visible otherwise. Additionally, Joshua notes that staying engaged with professional development can make you a more effective leader, both for your team and your institution. What obstacles has Joshua encountered in his leadership journey?Joshua shares two significant challenges he has faced in his leadership journey. First, he acknowledges that sometimes opportunities within your current institution may be limited, and it can be helpful to consider roles outside the university setting, such as in vendor or agency work, to gain a broader perspective before returning to higher ed. Secondly, he addresses the challenges of navigating leadership as a Black man in America, particularly in light of political shifts that influence higher education policies in different states. This has prompted him to be mindful of the realities that could impact both his personal and professional life, especially when considering future opportunities. How can senior leaders support their teams in advancing their careers?Joshua urges senior leaders to be proactive in supporting their teams' career growth. He suggests that leaders should not only focus on their current job titles but also consider their potential. Offering experiences, such as participating in strategy meetings or gaining exposure to high-level decisions, can prepare team members for future leadership roles. He also emphasizes the importance of sharing information strategically to help team members understand the broader context of leadership challenges, which will ultimately help them grow. - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaSeth Odell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethodell/https://twitter.com/sethodellAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. Did you know that how your message is received is mainly dependent on where people received it? This is a fact of life in an era that's framed by paid, earned, shared and owned channels, best known in its acronym form as the PESO framework. Focusing in on what we want our brand to be known for, we're soon hit with the reality that the same content plays differently when it's issued in a corporate release versus an influencer's social post versus a customer's review versus a direct message that's sent from someone we know. We have limited control in many of these settings, and because of the sway gigantic Silicon Valley companies have, even the media channels that let us publish content aren't giving us enough control for us to say we really own those properties. So how do we tune our content for these channels, so each one has the greatest impact on our audience? Our guest says that only after we accept the degrees of control afforded to us by different channels, can we align our content with what each of them does best. This concept is called Owned Asset Optimization RJ Licata began working at Tarakeet, a central-NY Mktg agency in 2014. He is now the director of marketing there. What you don't know about digital marketing can be your undoing. That is 2021 fact. For some years credit union c-suite occupants have shrugged off digital marketing - it's just for kids, our members skew old. Maybe that was true (maybe it wasn't as true as the c-suiters believed) but what now has become indisputable in our pandemic era is that digital is here and it has become a significant part of just about every life. That includes credit union members.Where's a credit union to get started in digital marketing? That's what you will hear about in this podcast with Amber Callahan, VP of marketing at 1st Advantage FCU in Virginia, and Kristin Harrison, director of business development at Web Strategies, also in Virginia. They have had a multi-year journey together and you will learn how to get started in digital marketing and how to go to next, higher levels.Do note: this is pretty much a tech free podcast. There's no need to have a techie at your side for this one.And accept the reality: we have entered the zone where tech is what matters. To quote the New York Times about Google and Facebook: "these tech companies are rich and powerful because they are the biggest sellers of advertising in the world."Digital already accounts for more than half of global ad spend. Many billions of dollars get spent on digital advertising. There are good reasons for that. You will hear about that in this podcast.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Anne-Marie Slaughter is an optimist, and a patriot, and an advocate for both personal and national renewal. We talk about the difference between renewal and both reinvention (out with the old) and restoration (back in with the old), and what it means for our politics. We also discuss her work on women, men, families and equality, almost a decade on from her famous essay “Why Women Still Can't Have it All”; the need for more grace in both our public and private life; why we should be “calling in” in private, rather than “calling out” in public; the lessons in leadership from her role as head of the New American think-tank; the past and future of feminism; our long overdue reckoning on racial justice; how to prepare for the 250th birthday of our country; and the unique power of women after the menopause. Websites are often the first point of contact between Main Street and its customers, making a robust online presence a pivotal component to business success. No matter where you look, there is evidence that forced closures, physical distancing, and stay-at-home orders have made life challenging for SMBs. There has also been an unprecedented surge in online shopping, and the need for certain freight logistics to fulfill the many orders. Some businesses will not survive and some changes in customer behavior will not revert to the way they were in the past. Surviving, and eventually thriving, in the Post-COVID era means acknowledging and accepting that the impact of COVID on our communities and culture will affect traditional Main Street strategies for years to come. The last year of pandemic life has made customers more tech-savvy than ever, raising their digital expectations. Main Street websites must offer the positive user experience today's consumer expects. They must be digital gateways and storefronts designed and managed with the same care as physical locations. We are joined by Charlie Birch, Main Street Website Strategist at Third Eye Web Strategies a Main Street America Allied Member. Charlie and her team believe that a web presence strategy that focuses on a sense of exploration and belonging will never cease to be relevant. In this episode, we talk with Matt Sluzinsky, Director of Web Strategy and Services at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. While Mayo Clinic is one of the most recognizable names in medicine, many are surprised to learn the clinic also provides over 400 academic programs ranging from entry-level certificates to elite residency programs. As part of the school's efforts to raise awareness about the extraordinary range of opportunities available at the college, Matt and his team partnered with an outside firm to create a series of journey maps to better understand how different types of students engage in the decision-making process and how to better tailor the college's online content to support prospective students in their journey. According to Matt, the results were illuminating and helped to energize his team's efforts as they set about a full-scale redesign of the college's website. Backed by fresh, compelling data, his team was able to focus their efforts on developing the specific types of content they knew would have the greatest impact on prospective students, including the creation of a comprehensive online healthcare careers guide. In this episode, Matt outlines the process his team used to create the journey maps and shares specific examples of how the journey mapping process informed his team's work.

The truth is that you can spin up a nice looking site quickly, but for brands the answer is much more complex. Join Sara Myers and Tom Keathley as they discuss trends in web development and strategy. All that and more on this week's episode of The A Game.

#mastermindgroup #entrepreneurship #motivation #takingthingstothenextlevel
Imagine your website is a doll. You choose the clothes, hats, and shoes for it. Some you buy, some you make yourself. Your website is similar. You rent server space from a host and drop a content management system on it. It’s a generic, website-shaped form that you can begin dressing. On this episode of Intended Consequences, we’re talking with David Vogelpohl (@wpdavidv), VP of Web Strategy at WP Engine, a premium WordPress platform. You’ll hear how - contrary to popular belief - data doesn’t really matter for David and his team when it comes to website redesigns. He says no matter what, an agency has to use data to show customers the results - and as an agency, you have to live with the good - and the bad. David tells us the website host you choose forms the bones of your ‘digital doll’ - and limits what you can make of it. Listen in as he explains. What happens when a visitor arrives at your site? Do you have a pathway set up to guide them from that first visit through dozens of points of contact until they become a customer? If this isn't all set up in advance - Web, blog, social, email, and online store - there's little point in getting traffic to your site. The post Creating a Pathway to Purchase: Web Strategy 201 appeared first on Control Mouse Media.
We are obsessed with getting traffic to our websites. I want to challenge that concept, because let's face it - random traffic doesn't do that much for you. Web Strategy 201 is getting beyond just "traffic" as a goal and making your site much more active in the sales process. The post Beyond Getting Traffic: Web Strategy 201 appeared first on Control Mouse Media.
Competition on the Web is tough. You can't just hang your shingle and expect people to show up. A basic website isn't good enough anymore - it needs to function as a PATHWAY for prospective customers. Here's how to make your website carry more of the sales load for you. We were in the studio today with several staff members to talk about the recent awards bestowed upon The River 95.3 (Royal Broadcasting, Inc.) by the VA/WV Associated Press during their recent luncheon. (See the full press release below) Randy Woodward, host of the Wake-Up Crew along with station manager, Liz Trumbull talked about the pool of submissions and the different awards we won. Randy told us what an honor it was for him to win given his lifelong love of sports. Mike O'Dell, VP of Royal Broadcasting and the voice of Shenandoah University Basketball joined us via phone to talk about being awarded "Best Play-By-Play." Liz and host, Janet Michael also talked about the 4th award - "Best Website" that the station has won for the second year in a row. PRESS RELEASE: Royal Broadcasting, Inc., parent company of local radio stations The River 95.3 and Sports Radio 1450, was awarded several awards on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the annual Virginia/West Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Awards held at The Greenbriar Resort in Sulpher Springs, WV. There were 370 entries submitted for 36 categories, with contestants coming from 29 different TV and radio stations across both Virginia and West Virginia. The River 95.3 swept the local sports categories. Royal Broadcasting Vice President, Mike O'Dell was awarded first place for “Best Sports Play-by-Play” for his play-calling of Shenandoah University basketball games. Judges credited him for painting “a great picture of what is going on.” “Best Sports Feature” went to Randy Woodward and Clint DeHaven for their work on Sports Dogs After Hours. Their program, which airs Thursdays at 7pm on The River 95.3 is a live and local sports talk show that also features interviews of local athletes and coaches from area schools. Judges credited the show for having “great production values” and “great energy and pacing”; judges also commented that Woodward and DeHaven “made local sports sound like the pros.” Randy Woodward's “awesome use of sound” won him the big sports award for the night as well: “Outstanding Sports Operation of the Virginias.” For the second year in a row The River 95.3 (theriver953.com) won “Best Website.” Judges described the site as “well designed and visually attractive,” as well as “easy to navigate” with “good use of interactivity.” The site was originally designed by Winchester-based, Web Strategies and is maintained by staff at The River 95.3. "When I purchased WZRV (The River 95.3) and WFTR (Sports Radio 1450) 18 years ago, I made a commitment to the local community that we would serve them in a way that honored their support of us. The staff of Royal Broadcasting took that commitment as their own and have done a tremendous job of serving. I think the AP Awards are a great reminder of that commitment but more important to me and to us is the on-going support of those efforts by every listener and every advertiser and every stakeholder in the northern Shenandoah Valley," says Andrew Shearer, President and owner of Royal Broadcasting.
In the latest episode, Chris Leone of Web Strategies, Inc. generously shares in detail the “highly accountable, highly trackable system” that drives his agency's marketing. He shares not only the guts of their process (which tools they use and which are most effective), but also why they do it the way they do. It's another excellent example of marketers practicing what they preach, essential if you are going to be credible to your clients and prospects. Engaging our supporters in the digital world is really important for today’s fundraisers. We’re all reaching out via social media, email, on our web pages and giving pages to attract donor interest and passion. This supplements our more traditional appeals, and everything can get a boost in donor attention if it’s done right. But pretty soon, our donor rolls really will be dominated by a new group of supporters--younger people who have had mobile phones, tablets, and apps their entire lives. These have been dubbed the "digital natives," a group of young donors we’re all looking to engage. Matt Herzberger, Executive Consultant for Web Strategy and Interactive Marketing Services here at Ruffalo Noel Levitz, helps a lot of institutions do this. Matt talked about digital natives in a recent presentation, so I got him on the line to get a perspective on what courting this rising group of well-connected supporters means for fundraising strategy.

At its best, the web is a model of efficiency, with a single document playing to multiple contexts. Adaptive design provides the basis for this flexibility, with documents that move gracefully between small and large screen and printed page, with multiple stops in between. For the web designer, designs that adapt are far more difficult to accomplish than fixed, controlled pages. But adaptive design is also liberating, for designers and users alike. Designers are relieved of the burden of trying to devise a single design that works for all users. Users are spared the frustration of trying to navigate environments that do not take into account their use context. This session will focus on the practice of adaptive design. We will begin with document design and how to create machine-friendly source documents. Next, we will discuss best practices for adaptive design, including page layouts that accommodate different window widths, functional elements that can be worked via the keyboard, and styling for print and mobile contexts. Finally, we will discuss the partnership between designer and user in an adaptive, user-controlled environment.
