“The people you're speaking directly to are going to shape your storytelling more than anything else. Otherwise, write a novel. You'll put a great story out into the world. You will never be present when someone receives it. And if they hate it, then you won't be there while that happens. But if you write a play and they hate it, you're going to be in the room when they hate it. And that is humbling and very informative.” – Topher PayneTopher Payne is an Atlanta-based playwright and screenwriter, originally from Mississippi. He made his Off-Broadway debut in 2017 with "Perfect Arrangement," which was a nominee for the LAMBDA literary award the following year. He's written six films for television, and is the author of the "Topher Fixed It" series, reimagining the endings to classic children's books, which people seem to either love or HAAAAAATE. David is a dramaturg, actor, PhD student, and more, headed toward teaching dramaturgy.  David shares stories of family, appreciation for those who laid the groundwork for being able to marry his husband, Mexican heritage, and more. David was born and raised in KC, KS, and has tried to leave the state numerous times, but always finds himself coming back "home."  He is now in the Theatre Department at Kansas University. David has had the privilege of working as a dramaturg for the past five years. The first show he dramaturged was the Rocky Horror Show and he was hooked immediately!  Dramaturgy is that comfortable space where David can unleash his inner nerd and celebrate the two things he loves: research and practice.    As dramaturg for "Perfect Arrangement," David’s research and education of the cast and crew enhance their performances.  The play by Topher Payne, is an “acerbic comedy of love and marriage” that “explores the challenges of maintaining a queer family during the McCarthy era.”  Performances are from Saturday, March 31–Sunday, April 8, 2018.  Tickets and info at http://kutheatre.com/perfect-arrangement

Hello, Athens. This is the WRITE CLUB Athens Podcast. I'm Jami Howard, the Head Bitch In Charge. If you're not familiar with WRITE CLUB, let me break it down for you. WRITE CLUB started in Chicago, the brainchild of our seriously disturbed overlord Ian Belknap. It goes like this: 2 OPPOSING WRITERS. 2 OPPOSING IDEAS. 7 MINUTES APIECE. AUDIENCE PICKS A WINNER. Writers compete for cash going to a charity of their choosing. It was a balmy night on April 2nd when a standing room only crowd welcomed WRITE CLUB to Flicker Bar for our inaugural show. Three seasoned WRITE CLUB Veterans -- Nick Tecosky, Randy Osborne and Topher Payne came to face off against three of Athens' finest ladies, Krista Westervelt, Janet Geddis and yours truly. The battle began when I faced off with WRITE CLUB Atlanta's Viceroy Nick Tecosky. We'll start with Nick's work of fiction chronicling his struggle with being a scientist zombie. His topic: Brains. [Nick's performance] Nothing is more human than desire, President Palin. Hard to follow, I took him on with my topic, Brawn. [Jami's performance] So, who had the better piece? Are you kicking yourself for not coming to see the show now? Fret not! WRITE CLUB Athens will be back soon. Make sure you like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter at WRITECLUBAthens. You can also check out our site at www.writeclubathens.com. If you're interested in participating in an upcoming bout, send us a message at hello@writeclubathens.com. We're looking for a fiery, brave soul to be our regular emcee and host. Thanks to Viceroy Nick Tecosky and Consigliere Myke Johns for coming up and helping get this crazy adventure off to a roaring start. Big thanks to Flicker Bar for taking a chance on something new. Also thanks to Carla Le Fever & The Rays for lending us the sweet, sweet sounds. Look for upcoming podcasts for Janet Geddis vs. Randy Osborne and Krista Westervelt and Topher Payne.
