Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Victor: Would you recommend an under desk treadmill? I spend so many hours sitting down because of work and was thinking setting out my office in a way that I could walk in the treadmill while working. And no, this is not a replacement to my workouts or outdoor walking. It's just that sometimes I find it hard to get my 10k steps daily. I feel like I get a lot in the morning (walk to the gym and back) but that's around 7k steps. Then sometimes I don't have time to leave the house for another walk because I'm super busy with work... hence was thinking the under desk treadmill! Thomas: Hey Dr. Cabral, thank you for the endless wisdom and the many years you've added onto my life. I wanted to ask you about broccoli sprouts. I know they are full of sulforafane, so I grow my own in a jar, and put a dense handful into my morning smoothies. Do you grow and/ or use them? Sometimes they smell pungent so it's hard to tell if it's the beneficial sulforafane or something bad like mold. I try to err on the safe side so wanted to see what your pros/cons would be. Thanks! Katie: Hi Dr. Cabral! I'm wondering your advice for someone who has done gut healing but still experiences allergy symptoms. I've worked with your team for about 3 years now and have done CBO once + a second short round, 2 mold protocols (and testing for mold in house - none), a heavy metal detox, rebalanced hormones + cortisol levels, and supplements to adjust other imbalances that came up, plus took out food sensitivities. I ran the big 5 again a year ago and things were much improved, so I know it's working to some extent. I no longer experience hay fever symptoms like Post nasal drip, itchy eyes, runny nose, etc. However I do still experience asthma/allergy symptoms in the form of sinus headaches/migraines, and breathing troubles. The breathing troubles are not just standard asthma attacks, but what I can best describe as "sniffing for air" - a sensation I'm not getting enough air in (easily) through the nose, so it's as if I gasp for air through the nostrils. Often my throat & tongue muscles feel tense as well. I'm currently on Cingular and Xyzal, plus HistPro and other allergies teas & tinctures, but can't seem to totally kick my allergies. What recommend next steps would you take if you were in my shoes? Katie: Hi Dr. Cabral! Wondering if you can provide an explanation for feeling a watery mouth/ slightly nauseous sensation during late nights or early mornings. I notice if I stay up late (no alcohol), or wake up early (before 7am sometimes!), I get this uncomfortable feeling paired with fatigue. Eating seems to help it so I wonder if it's related to blood sugar? So curious your thoughts! Thanks for your help always :) Erica: Hey Cabral! I'm not sure if you have answered this question before.. I couldn't find it online.. but I was wondering what your daily eating + supplement routine looks like. What times you eat breakfast, lunch, dinner.. possibly a juice.. what your go to eating routine looks like.. i..e breakfast = smoothie + oatmeal, lunch = vegetables + lean protein.. foods you eat most commonly, etc. of course I know everyone's body is different.. and reacts / responds to things differently.. but it would be cool if you maybe made an episode on this ! Thanks! Kelsey: Any tips for living with thalassemia minor? Are there any gut connections? The Business Generals Podcast | Helping You Maximize Your Entrepreneurial Dreams - Every Single Week
Rob Jacobs is the guy who gets people up-and-out of their chairs and moving again! A personal fitness expert and the co-founder of UnSit, an innovative company working to get people UP out of their chairs and moving again with the world’s first Treadmill Desk optimized for use in an office environment. His background is firmly in the fitness industry having been in treadmill retail and commercial equipment including a repairs and servicing business model. Being a fitness enthusiast sitting at a chair all day made Rob research into how to help people with desk jobs get fitter by moving more. First business startup – the walking centre. This was a fitness centre targeted at middle aged stay at home mums who would go into the store, rent a movie, and walk on a treadmill while watching their movie! This proved to be a great model for Rob. The results were very good and people started buying these high ticket treadmills in the Beverly Hills area, and opened more stores which also included the sale of commercial fitness equipment. Rob eventually sold out of the retail model after a number of years as the market changed with increased competition and margin pressure. Before selling out of retail Rob had developed a service model that repaired and serviced fitness equipment for health clubs and fitness centres, so with a new business partner Rob developed and grew this business to include retailing of spare parts. Rob has maintained and continued to grow this business over the last 25 years plus and it still continues to be his core revenue generator. The business model is ecommerce based enhanced with telephone technology support, targeted at out of warranty fitness equipment servicing clients in different countries. The problem that turned into a new business idea Rob found himself constantly sitting at a desk, servicing clients and growing his spare parts business, and found himself having less and less exercise, feeling lethargic, lower back problems all from sitting behind a desk far too long. A book by Dr. James Levine, who is credited as the popular inspiration for the treadmill desk, inspired Rob to work on solving his problem. Book reference: https://www.amazon.com/Get-Up-Chair-Killing-About/dp/1137278994 (Get up – why your chair is killing you, Dr James Levine) Rob had seen the idea before but he discredited it on the basis that he didn’t think a treadmill desk provided real exercise or real practicality in an office setting. [During this interview Rob was walking along at 1 mile per hour on his treadmill desk and by about 15 minutes into the interview he had clocked over 2,000 steps! Pretty impressive]. Dissecting the research and looking at the market opportunity Obesity is one third of US population, and this same third is also at the pre-diabetic stage estimated to require medicated treatment in a few years time Sitting disease is a term used in the book by Dr Levine which includes diabetes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses which can be prevented or recovered from through exercise Mental creativity is a softer science but this is the marketing point Rob has picked, exercise leads to a more productive and creative workforce and this can be achieved through the treadmill desk technology Designing the product After reading https://www.amazon.com/Get-Up-Chair-Killing-About/dp/1137278994 (Dr James Levine’s book) Rob decided to work on designing a product that was fit for purpose Most designs at this time simply took a tread mill and stuck it under a desk, but Rob figured there was better way Rob shares that while his academic qualifications are minimal and his learning quite empirical and self taught, this did not disadvantage his entrepreneurial journey Rob took out an old treadmill, a piece of plywood and created a frame around the treadmill, tweaked it and after a couple of months came up with half decent treadmill desk Then after using it a for a
If I eat irresponsibly, I gain weight—no matter how far I walk.
Today's special guest is Rob Jacobs. Rob is a leader in the walking for health movement. Back in 1986, the former fitness instructor founded The Walking Center which pioneered the use of motorized treadmills to pace people, making walking an effective form of exercise. Today, he is the co-founder of Unsit (https://www.unsit.com/) which is a company that created the first ever treadmill you can use under your standing desk at work. His WALK-1 treadmill has even caught the attention of some celebrities such as former California first lady Maria Shriver, who is an ardent health advocate and former long-distance swimmer and Dancing With The Stars contestant, Diana Nyad. During the interview, Rob and I discuss: How moving while you work and think benefits your creativity by 60% and enhances your productivity Why sitting too long has similar effects as smoking Why walking is a great way to problem solve --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/figurefit/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/figurefit/support
The Treadmill Desk and The Benefits of Walking http://learntruehealth.com/treadmill-desk My guest today is a fitness expert and inventor of the revolutionary Treadmill Desk. Rob Jacobs is the creator of the first specifically designed Unsit Treadmill Desk. He designed the machine for the purpose of preventing the ill health effects caused by lack of movement and sitting too much. It can help invert the common office lifestyle, where there's plenty of time spent in sitting down than in making movements such as walking and standing. He believes that thru the Unsit Treadmill Desk, he can motivate people to move while working and help break the unhealthy habits of sitting too much. But, if one can not get a treadmill desk, then "set the alarm to get up and move every 20 minutes," says Rob. Hippocrates once said 2400 years ago, "Walking is a man's best medicine". According to physicians, if you want to add seven years to your life, take a 20 to 25-minute walk a day. Researchers also discovered that regular walking modifies our nervous system decreasing our chances of getting angry and hostile. And if you are stuck with work and couldn't get creative, experts advise taking a walk so as your creative juices will flow. "Sitting around on the job is something that's gonna go away for a variety of reasons, health reasons, fitness reasons, productivity reasons and creativity reasons. I find it more creative and I come up with ideas more when I wind up and walking around." - Rob Jacobs Sitting Is The New Smoking Rob believes that our body was designed to move around. That we will become more productive in our work if we stand up and move. And this is true. As a matter of fact, Dr. James Levine, M.D., Ph.D., of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and author of the book, Get Up "Our bodies have evolved over millions of years to do one thing: move. As human beings, we evolved to stand upright. For thousands of generations, our environment demanded nearly constant physical activity." Rob shares the physiological risks of prolonged sitting: Bottom of the feet - Serves as a "switch". When we stand up it sends a signal to the brain that there's a threat or there are opportunities. If we turned that switch "off" by sitting down too much, it sends a lot of functions in the brain that are meant for solving problems, to rest, or asleep. Calories burned start to drop lower to 1 calorie a minute because our body is at rest. Lower limbs - When we are stuck in one right angle contraption, it puts pressure on the big muscles in the body impeding blood circulation in the lower limbs leading to all tingling pain. Spine- We're supposed to have a nice "S" form on our backs. But when we sit our spine is curving in a wrong direction. It is curved the other way squishing our discs backwards putting pressure on the nerves that later on leads to sciatic nerve pain. Shoulder and Neck: Too much sitting causes neck infringements and discomfort Blood Sugar - When our calories burned drop down to zero, we start to feel sleepy and loses energy. Normally, people grab caffeine and sugar to stay awake instead of walking and moving. In years of doing this, could lead to inflammation of pancreas or diabetes. How To Have An Effective Shift Of Mindset? Rob Jacobs shares tips on how to stop making excuses and avoid a sedentary lifestyle: Mental commitment - desire to do; willingness to achieve change Set a goal - eg. 10-min walk a day Improve nutrition intakes Start doing walking /standing breaks If one can afford, try the Unsit Treadmill Desk Rob Jacobs is a pioneer in the fitness industry. He completed UCLA’s Fitness Instructors Program in 1986 and founded The Walking Center, helping people develop a healthy habit of exercise through walking and running on treadmills. Rob is indeed a pioneer in the health industry as he launched a vegan and organic restaurant in the 1990s! In 1993 Rob co-founded Real Food Daily restaurants with his wife, Ann Gentry. Their restaurant chain specializes in certified organic produce and product. RFD promotes sustainability by making plant-based foods appealing to mainstream restaurant patrons. For five years Rob worked with Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo, a family owned & operated an organic farming business that grows, packs and ships gourmet quality certified organic cherry tomatoes and fresh culinary herbs. Stefan wants to talk to you about a new product that he just purchased, called the Lifespan Treadmill Desk. He was inspired to invest in this product after he read a book by James A. Levine, called, Get Up!: Why Your Chair is Killing You and What You Can Do About It”. As many of you know, Stefan has an online business and works from home. One of the biggest challenges that he has is that he sits a lot. The Lifespan Treadmill Desk has elevated Stefan's productivity, enhanced his business, and transformed his health. I spend most of my workday walking on this treadmill desk because sitting kills more people than smoking. For every one hour you sit, two hours of your life is lost forever. Dr. James Levine makes strong claims in today's Book-of-the-Day, "Get Up." And he's no pseudo "fake" scientist. He runs a Mayo Clinic... His main point is that your office chair, your sofa, the seat in your car - they are all killing you. 75% of health care costs (currently at $3.8 trillion) come from things like diabetes, high blood pressure, back pain, obesity, depression, cancer, cardiovascular disease - issues directly related to sitting too much. Here are my book notes: 1. Going to the gym won't fix sitting all day: “4 large studies in Australia and the U.S. demonstrate that going to the gym at the end of the day sadly doesn’t quite offset the apparent harm of sitting all day long." 2. To lose weight you have to increase your "NEAT" activity - your non-exercise activity: “Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) calories—explain why an active person can expend 2,000 calories a day more than an inactive person of the same size.” 3. It's sitting at work that's your main problem: “Job is the major predictor of NEAT. Active work can expend 2,000 calories per day more than a sedentary job.” 4. It's killing our kids: “In the USA only 4% of elementary schools, 8% of middle schools and 2% of high schools provide daily physical education. We were also told that many fidgety children (probably those with high NEAT in their brain circuits) were frequently medicated for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).” 5. Walk after eating: “With a 1-mph walk after a meal, blood sugar peaks are halved. After every meal, I take a short NEAT walk, usually for 15 minutes” 6. Walk 10,000 steps (2 to 3 miles) using a treadmill desk: This way you can use work hours to get in the ideal 10,000 steps a day. Plus treadmills can measure your daily steps. Also most iPhones now can measure too. I love my treadmill desk. Set it to 1.5 mph and you easily walk 5 miles a day without even realizing it. I use the ones from http://www.lifespanfitness.com - I don't make a penny from them for all you skeptics... Check out the full video demonstration on my youtube.com/tailopez channel.
