Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is prevalent in 25–30% of British and European populations, representing a potential global public health crisis. Marine omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids offer well-evidenced benefits to NAFLD biomarkers; however, the effect of plant-based n-3 has not been evaluated with a systematic review and meta-analysis. Join us for this episode where Douglas Taren speaks with Katie Lane, co-author of this featured article, a review aimed to systematically evaluate the effect of plant-based n-3 supplementation on NAFLD surrogate biomarkers and parameters.

Certified Child Life Specialist, Jessica Lewin, talks with friends across the pond - Cath Hubbock, Deanna Kenward, and Katie Lane - three UK-based Play Specialists. Together, we unravel the intricacies of child healthcare in the UK, a unique perspective that has transformed over the years. This conversation unveils the hurdles and opportunities related to Play Specialist training--from recruiting mentors in the healthcare system to the significance of trust-building when handling sick children. We also probe the complexities of recognizing the value of play in a healthcare setting and introducing oneself as the "Play Specialist" in trauma situations. Much like child life, the field of play specialty is evolving and the pressures, responsibilities and emotional tolls that come with the profession are very simliar to what child life specialists experience in the United States. This insightful episode will leave you more informed about child healthcare, the role of Play Specialists, and the importance of play in nurturing a child's development and wellbeing in a medical setting. **Quick note: you will hear my 2-year-old son JJ make a few background noises on occasion in this one ;) If you are dealing with chronic pain, this episode is meant for you. Katie Lane drops by to talk bullfighting, reaching rock bottom, Black Twitter v Fiat 500 Twitter and Love Island. This episode genuinely could have been over an hour long. So much good stuff was cut there may even have to be a part 2... More about Katie: Katie and Athena first met on the open mic circuit many moons ago and have enjoyed pies together in Edinburgh. She wouldn’t pretend to call herself a comedian any more but still keeps her hand in with a hometown monthly gig in Streatham. In her spare time, Katie cooks endless curry, deadheads her roses and watches horrendous television programmes when she should be reading more. She is very excited at the prospect of all-day brunches with Athena’s child once she can learn to hold a decent conversion. Which, during this episode, you hear is not such a distant prospect. Enjoy! It's contracts time! But what does that mean? What's involved in the process of coming to an agreement with a publisher? What more should you be looking at than the dollar amount you're offered? In this episode, we talk with lawyer and contracts expert Katie Lane, from Work Made for Hire, about the ins and outs of the contract process -- from the moment of getting a book offer through to dealing with any problems you might have fulfilling things you agreed on in your contract. Want to know even more about contracts after listening to this episode? (Of course you do.) Katie has you covered! Here's a series of emails she provides about the basics of contracts demystification: bit.ly/understandcontracts.
Generally speaking we Freelancers got into the business to do work we enjoy and, hopefully, get paid for it. We didn’t go into business for ourselves so we could negotiate with clients. Unfortunately, especially in the creative fields, this is exactly what we must know how to do in order to succeed. Whether it be negotiating a contract, a dispute, or simply talk a client into letting us do our jobs, knowing how to build relationships with clients and communicate properly with them is vital for both making sure our needs are met as contractors AND that theirs are met as our customers. That brings us to our guest today. Attorney, writer, blogger, and negotiation coach Katie Lane has spent years helping creative freelancers protect their rights and be paid fairly for the work they do. I’m thrilled to have Katie on the show today to talk about it. Find Katie online at www.workmadeforhire.net

Mystery series we initially enjoyed and then gave up on - We’ve all started reading down mystery series or authors, and then hit a point where we said, “nah, I’m good.” In this episode, we talk about what we gave up on and why, and some we loved all throughout. This comes from a place of love: we enjoyed early installments enough that we kept reading, but something eventually got lost for us. In fact, we often recommend the first few or even several novels, and tell you when the best point to stop is — the subtitle of this episode is “exactly when to stop reading.” An important note: this episode was accidentally recorded with macabre timing. The first author we discuss on this show, Sue Grafton, passed away while we were recording the episode — that same evening. We obviously didn’t know while recording, and found out the next morning. Thus, we speak about her as a current writer. We’ve edited the episode to remove some discussion about the planned final novel in her series, Z, which her family says wasn’t written and which they won’t hire someone else to write. Some Afoot news: we haven’t been able to get enough panelists together for regular tapings, so we’re going on hiatus. We will produce episodes occasionally in the future. Host Glenn Fleishman with James Callan, Katie Lane, David J. Loehr and Shannon Sudderth.
In this episode, Ilise Benun, of Marketing-Mentor.com, talks with Katie Lane, lawyer, negotiation coach and blogger at Work Made For Hire, about how to overcome the particular challenges faced by creatives and by women when it comes to negotiating the best deal for yourself. Phryne Fisher Murder Mysteries - She’s smoothly sensual, a sharp dresser, and has a wicked uppercut. We travel to the Antipodes to visit with Phryne Fisher, the protagonist of a series of 20 murder mystery books and three seasons of an adaptation to television. We like the cut of her jib and the stab of her knife. If you’d like to prep before listening, we read three of the books: Cocaine Blues, our introduction to the cast, which grows and grows; Murder in Montparnasse, which fleshes out her backstory; and Murder in the Dark, which takes place on a rambly country estate and features a sex cult. We fire off the spoiler horn after our initial background discussion. Host Glenn Fleishman with Jean MacDonald, Katie Lane, Shannon Sudderth and Suzi Steffen.
The year is soon to wrap and we want to finish 2016 on a high note. I'm continuing a very fun tradition that began last year on the show. For the next two weeks, we'll be sharing some of the best of So Money 2016. These are interviews that taught us how to either earn more, start businesses, invest wisely, be more successful in life, and work, and family. Today's theme is dedicated to negotiating and earning your worth. We've covered a lot of terrain throughout the year on this topic. It's one of the So Money tenants, right? There's a limit to how much you can save... so how about earning more? It's one of my favorite topics. In the episode we'll hear from:Katie Lane, Creator of Work Made For Hire Blog interviewed in EP 441Alexandra Dickinson, Founder & CEO of Ask For It interviewed in EP 439Daniel Shapiro, Author of "Negotiating The Non-Negotiable interviewed in EP 423Lisa Gersh, CEO of Goop interviewed in EP 346P.S. Have you left a review for So Money on iTunes yet? It would mean the world to me... an early holiday gift! Reviews are a very, very important way of giving a podcast attention and love in the iTunes store…which in turn lets the podcast be seen and heard. Just head to your iTunes app and leave a review. Thanks in advance! For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.
Katie Lane is helping artists and freelancers protect their rights and get paid fairly for their work. She's an attorney and negotiation coach based in Portland, OR. She helps her clients successfully handle all sorts of sticky conflicts like, how do I ask for more money? How do I ask for more resources? How do I know what to ask for in the first place because I don’t know what my peers are making in this space? On her blog, Work Made For Hire, she also shares some of her negotiation and legal information and her favorite thing to do is to teach people who are intimidated by negotiation to get what they want with confidence while remaining calm. That is where we focus the conversation with Katie Lane. For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

A determined, hard-nosed teenager, Veronica had absolutely no concern about invading the privacy of others in her pursuit of solving a case her father is working on, troubles her classmates brought to her, or getting to the bottom of the season’s overall arc—the murder of her best friend. It’s time to revisit the first season of the show 12 years after it debuted, and a bunch of great fans of the show and one newcomer, the host, talk episodes, characters, themes, and comparisons to other programs. We start off without disclosing anything, then blow the spoiler horn at 13 minutes, 20 seconds into the episode. Host Glenn Fleishman with Erika Ensign, James Callan, Jenni Leder and Katie Lane.
Female mystery authors and protagonists - Miss Marple may have been a pioneer crime-tape crosser, but there are oodles of women writing detective fiction and starring in it. In this episode, we talk about our faves, what a woman detective brings to the picture (Miss Fisher!), and introduce folks to perhaps some lesser-known treasures. Host Glenn Fleishman with James Callan, Katie Lane, Jean MacDonald and Shannon Sudderth.

Salsa music and dance is becomming more popular in the U.S. and Portland, "All the Sex I've Ever Had" brings seniors on stage to talk about sexuality, and Katie Lane has legal advice for freelancers in comics.
Katie Lane is an attorney who writes a blog called Work Made for Hire. She advises creative freelancers and artists on how to protect their rights and get paid fairly for their work. She recently took the plunge herself, going full-time as a self-employed person. We'll talk about what led her into this specialized career and the kinds of things that people who want to or are pursuing work on their own should consider. We take a brief, deep dive into copyright, too. Sponsors & patrons This podcast is made possible through the support of sponsors and patrons. We're sponsored this week by Cards Against Humanity, which just launched a site where you can buy directly from them, including their Bigger Blacker Box and their 2012 and 2013 holiday packs, the profits from which are donated to charity. Thanks to patrons Bryan Clark, GravityFish, and Brain Rutledge for supporting us directly through Patreon! You can back this podcast for as little as $1 per month. At higher levels, we'll thank you on the air and send you mugs and T-shirts! Show notes The US Copyright Office has a circular that defines work-for-hire rules (PDF). Katie notes that regardless of what contract you sign, you can reclaim rights after 35 years. It's a very specific process. This has been an ongoing issue with the rights related to early creators of well-known comics characters, like Superman. The phonogram right is a set of audio rights separate from copyright. I explain it at length at the Economist. For extensive and interesting details about the duration of copyright in America, depending on what kind of thing is under discussion, when it was created or registered, and other factors, consult this chart by copyright guru Peter Hirtle at Cornell University's site. I wrote a pile of words on the tax and licensing issues (in America) around crowdfunding. You can apply for and receive an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS through a simple online process -- no, I'm not kidding! It's great! The @for_exposure Twitter account is a riot, posting messages about people asking for work from others for free. Katie recommends taking a look at these sites: Zencash: Helpful best practices (and a service) for getting paid and on time. Docracy: An open-source contract site, where you can examine others' contracts and upload your own. Shake: It's a way to create, sign, and send legally binding agreements via an iPad or iPhone. Contract Creator: A tool from the Freelancers Union that guides you through creating a model for most or all of what you need.
