Writer Terry Tempest Williams' latest book, "Erosion: Essays of Undoing", grapples with the erosion of democracy, science, compassion, and trust, as her beloved Utah red rock landscape faces oil and gas extraction, and the planet faces destructive warming. At a Good Reads on Earth live event, Williams spoke with Steve Curwood about how science and Native knowledge alike can guide us on a more sustainable path, and why erosion also creates an opportunity for evolution towards a better future. After the interview, Terry responds to audience questions. LEARN MORE about these stories and everything in our decades of archives at loe.org. COVID-19 appears to be deadlier to people with years of exposure to high air pollution, strengthening the case for cleaning up dirty air that already kills millions around the world every year. Climate mitigation could be a big benefit of the solutions, since much of the pollution comes from the burning of fossil fuels. Also, every year, citizen scientists around the world participate in brief, intensive surveys of biological diversity called BioBlitzes. I always said I wasn't having kids, and part of that was not getting married. Here I am blessed with a life and family that I never planned for. I could never imagine my future self with any of the guys that I met/dated. Scott has shown me that ultimately, my decision was right in how he has made God and our marriage a priority. Like I mentioned last week, marriage isn't easy and this step-blended family deal escalates that. I am thankful for my loving husband, Scott. Take 30 seconds with me to be grateful for your spouse and if you are single, for all the people that you have dated and the strength for not settling. Getting married later in life, this being a second marriage for Scott, blended family with kids on both sides, 70% divorce statistic for blended families....the odds were stacked against us. We were definitely not on the right track and I am thankful that we came in touch with Family Life an organization whose whole existence centers around building families through building strong marriages. https://www.familylife.com/ Through that organization, thankfully we met the amazing duo, Gil and Brenda, who have walked alongside us to help us get back on track and moving our marriage forward. https://gilandbrenda.com/ https://youtu.be/IqX9M5zvG94 Take 30 seconds with me to be grateful for family members, friends and/or church cheerleaders that support your marriage and if you're not married that support you and your growth as an individual. I am excited to wrap up episode 2 of 2 and cover the last of the 5 languages: GIFTS and ACTS OF SERVICE. I love how authors Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell wrote “The 5 Languages of Love for Children” and gave amazing examples of how to show love to your child in these 5 different areas. How do you show your children love in these 3 areas? Which ones come naturally to you? Which ones do you have to work at? The smell of old books. The crinkle of the yellowing pages. While admiring the wonders of libraries, have you ever wondered how paper ages and why some sheets last longer than others? Paper conservation scientists have. Stereo Chemistry caught up with a slew of these researchers after hearing about a special collection of books at the U.S. Library of Congress. The more than 1,000 volumes in this collection have essentially donated their bodies to science. We embarked on a time-travel journey to learn more about this collection and the self-trained chemist, a polarizing figure, who donated it and who helped bring about modern-day paper preservation testing. Fed up with what felt like a mug's game of searching for a daycare spot for her son, lawyer Nadine Blum says “enough is enough” when daycare providers asked for fees, just to get on their waitlist. With her colleague Kelly Doctor, she sets out to change the law, only to realize that long lasting change will require a fundamental shift about who we think childcare is for. Childcare advocate Sarah Ehrhardt contrasts her experience as a parent in Sweden and in Toronto, and lawyer Louis Century provides insight into how international law could be used as a tool to build a better childcare system. We continue our series with a discussion about health as a component of the social contract. Our second episode explores dissent—as both a shaper and a component of the social contract. We hear from Tim McCarthy, an educator, historian, and citizen-activist; Charlene Carruthers, founding national director of Black Youth Project 100; Nate Boyer, former Seattle Seahawks long snapper and United States Army Green Beret; David McCraw, vice president and deputy general counsel of The New York Times; and Stas Walker, a blogger, essayist, and scholar. This episode is marked explicit due to brief strong language describing an incident of hate speech. For additional information on the issues we briefly examine, we recommend the following resources:Protest Nation: Words That Inspired A Century of American Radicalism (Timothy Patrick McCarthy & John McMillian eds., The New Press 2010).Charlene A. We start our series with a conversation about how we define the boundaries of an American community—legally, politically, and practically—and how our perception of community may be shifting today. In this episode, we hear from Jin Park, a college student and DACA recipient, Jenny Beth Martin, a co-founder of Tea Party Patriots, Clint Smith, a writer and educator, and Marc Dunkelman, an author and research fellow. For additional information on the issues we briefly examine, we recommend the following resources:Mark Hulliung, The Social Contract in America: From the Revolution to the Present Age (Univ.
