Geoff and Marie's Good Life: Part 9Lucy's TurnGeoff finally gets more quality time with Lucy.Based on posts by Only In My Mind, in 15 parts. Listen to the Podcast at Explicit Novels.I was bringing in the bedsheets from the washing line when my lovelies got home. Colin was inside doing his art homework alone as I'm afraid that art isn't my forté. From the way Angie bounced up the path like a tall, supple Tigger, I assumed that their mission had been successful. Marie followed behind at a more stately pace, but I could tell by her expression that she was pleased."Geoff! It's perfect," Angie enthused. "Show him, Marie!"Marie finally caught up with our friend. "She's not wrong, Geoffrey," she admitted. "The moment we saw it, we knew that was the one." She felt into her handbag and took out a small square box."Just like you and me then," I reminded her, kissing the top of her head."You'll get anywhere saying things like that, you smooth devil," my wife smiled as she showed me our purchase."So what happens now?" I asked. It appeared that they were in the dark too. Did we give her it now, like an engagement ring? Or wait until the ceremony, like a wedding ring?I decided. I took Angie's left hand and dropped to one knee. "Angela, you have added a new thread to the tapestry of our lives. Will you agree to be my betrothed?"Marie was quick to respond. She took her friend's hand from me and turned Angie towards her. "Angela, you have been my closest friend for decades, will you now be my betrothed?""Oh! God! Yes! Thank you. I love you both so much," wailed Angie, hopping up and down in floods of happy tears.Marie held out the ring they had chosen and bought together and together my wife and I slipped it onto the fourth finger of Angie's left hand. As I'd suggested, they had chosen something called a Russian Ring, made of three interwoven strands of different shades of gold. It was perfect. I resolved to get my little Mediterranean goddess a matching necklace. There was the sound of applause from behind us and we turned, rather startled, truth to be told, to find Colin beaming at us, the drawing in his hand forgotten."I think you're supposed to kiss her now, Grandma, Grandad," he observed. We couldn't fault his grasp of etiquette so we did; very chastely and properly with no tongues."Mum's gonna go proper monkey poo this time," he predicted, quite astutely. "Glad I'm not the one that has to tell her." He smiled, congratulated us all and then asked for our opinions of his drawing. We were all impressed, both by his artwork and his attitude and told him so. He disappeared happily back inside to put his drawing safely in his bag."He's not wrong about Linda," I pointed out. "I was thinking about this while I was running and I think I should take her out for tea tomorrow and tell her about our, er; does 'new situation' sound about right?""Thank God!" Marie breathed a sigh of relief. "I don't think she'd accept this updated version of 'the talk' from me. Anyway, I did the one about boys, boobs and periods, now it's your turn."I went and switched the oven on and chose a bottle of wine as I waited for it to reach 180°C. I'd picked up a bottle of Ribeiro in our local supermarket and a Spanish white seemed to fit nicely with the ingredients so I parked it in the fridge to chill.I got the tray with the onions, tomatoes, garlic cloves and potatoes and glugged over a little olive oil before putting it all in the oven for twenty minutes and then went off to see my girls. Angie had calmed down and they were trying to decide her outfit for our ceremony."What about Padme's rainbow dress?" I suggested. I'd had nothing urgent after lunch and had done some research. Angie gave me a long appraising look and typed 'padme rainbow' into the search engine on her phone. She selected 'images' and then studied the screen intently for longer than I expected. Still silent, she showed Marie the dress. "He's a clever old sod, really, isn't he?" My beloved observed. "That's beautiful, and it's perfect for your body shape."Angie agreed. "That's it. I was considering Rey's outfit but this is better. This is the one I want.""You can actually buy these on-line," I offered."Not a chance!" Retorted Angie. Marie looked as puzzled as me at how emphatic Angie's response was. "I'm sure that some are okay," Angie conceded. "But I've seen too many instances on Facebook where the seller shows an image of the original but what actually arrives looks like it was sewn in the dark from old curtains by an arthritic chimp. I want it to look just like that picture.""But at least you'll know how much it is going to cost, dear," Marie said. "Who knows how much your student friends will have to pay to find a fabric like that?""Don't care," Said a defiant Angie. "I can afford whatever I want and it's my money after all."Marie leaned in for a kiss. "We'll contribute too. We always intended to.""No. Thank you, but no." Angie was adamant. "You bought me that beautiful ring. I realize that it would be rude to offer to pay for that, but everything else; everything," she stressed that last word, "is on me."My wife and I shared another look of surprise at our friend's determined outburst. "But Ange," Marie began."Everything, Marie. You've been so kind to me for so long. And these last few weeks;” She teared up again. "You really don't know, do you?"I shrugged. We were into Donald Rumsfeld territory here with 'unknown unknowns' and I didn't think that this was the moment to dive down that particular rabbit hole."You know that apartment I live in?" Angie asked. We did. It was in a massive, tastefully converted, Victorian building near the university. "Don't you think it's rather large and expensive for just one person?" We both just did some head wobbles, shoulder shakes and comme ci, comme ça, hand gestures to indicate that we had wondered but."It's not that expensive," she continued, eyes sparkling with mischief. "Not for me, anyway. You see." She paused for effect. "I own the entire building. A lettings management company deals with renting the other apartments; I just live off the income. I only do the consultancy work for you know who," she tapped the side of her nose. "to stop me getting bored and my brain shutting down." She was winding me up because she knew I suspected that she was some kind of spook."Don't worry about the cost," she said cheerfully. "I can afford it. Last time I checked I had over two million pounds just in my savings accounts."She looked gleefully at the expressions on our faces. "And, once we're officially joined, I'm changing my will to leave it all to you and your kids. Colin certainly won't need a student loan when he goes to Uni.""Angie, darling. There's no need," Marie protested."Who else then?" Angie challenged her. "You two are the closest I've had to a family since I ditched that last useless waste of DNA. I've had more fun, romance, sex and affection from you two lunatics in the last six weeks than from both my husbands combined over two decades."Marie looked helplessly at me. I knew exactly what to do. I leaned forward. "Angie?" I said softly, taking her hand in mine."Yes, Geoff?" She replied, returning my loving gaze."Please can I have an Aston Martin DB12?"We collapsed in each other's arms in fits of giggles. Marie swiped me fondly across the head. "You nutcase. Get back in the kitchen and get our tea ready."I checked, and the potatoes were starting to cook, so I laid the chicken and chorizo slices on top, added the herbs and spices and put the tray back in the oven. "Alexa, set a timer for twenty minutes." Then I went off in search of Colin.I told him that I needed a private chat with his mum. "You think?" Was his smart-ass response. Sometimes he makes me so proud.Anyway, he texted one of his friends and persuaded her to wangle an invite to go over straight from school the following evening to do their homework together. Linda would collect him around seven."So Colin. Mia. Is she nice?""Yes Grandad. She's nice. No Grandad, she's not my girlfriend. We're only thirteen but we get on just fine as friends." Hell. The kid's more mature than half of the lads I used to play rugby with.We chatted some more until Alexa's alarm went off and I hit the kitchen again. Dropped the sliced peppers into the tray, a good mix up and back in for the last twenty minutes.I was starting to set the table when Marie and Angie came in to take over and chased me away to watch the news on TV. Angie had already taken her ring off and had decided to keep it in its box until they were with their friends. Then Marie intended to propose again in front of them all. It sounded lovely and I would have liked to see it, but I'd agreed that this was their moment.Linda arrived on time and about ten minutes later we sat down to eat. She'd called to collect a baguette on the way home as I'd asked and we used it to mop up the juices from our plates. The wine paired well; even Colin agreed, though he only got a sip of his mum's. Perhaps, when he's sixteen, Linda will let him have a glass with his meals. After we'd finished, the ladies declared that they would clear the table as I'd done all of the cooking. It had hardly been a chore but I wasn't about to argue. Instead, I went and asked Colin if he was okay with Aunty Angie being, well, betrothed to Grandma and Grandad. He thought carefully for a while. "Is anyone going to get hurt?"It was a reasonable question. "I hope not. But it's always possible. Even two people who love each other can eventually drift apart.""But you're all happy now?" He persisted. "You all want this?""Yes. All of us." I confirmed."What will I call her then?" He asked. That hadn't occurred to me. "Whatever you and Angie decide. That seems the fairest to me."His face lit up. "When you've told mum, I'm going to ask Aunty Angie if I can call her; Grangie." He announced triumphantly. There were still tears of laughter streaming down my face when the women joined us five minutes later. They all looked suspiciously at the pair of us."You had to be there," I told them, then we cracked up again. Before Linda and Colin left I told her that, as Colin had a homework date the following day, earning a glare from him, I'd treat her to a meal after work as we'd both be on our own. I suggested a Thai in town and we agreed to meet there at five fifteen. She looked warily at me, but I'd been practicing my innocent expression and gave nothing away. Certainly, nothing had been said that evening to suggest there was a problem.Angie saw them off with us and then said her own goodbyes. I copped a feel of her bum as we kissed, well, we're engaged now, or something. Marie must have shared my sentiment only she went for a tit. I slapped her hand gently. "Enough of that. She'll never get away if you start on her nipples." They both reluctantly agreed and then there was just the two of us again."Are we being silly, Geoff? Starting a new way of living? At our age? Is this just desperation?" It wasn't like Marie to second guess herself.I hugged her to me. "I don't think so. We have time, money and our health. The kids are okay so this is our opportunity to be us. Not teacher, boss, researcher, mum or dad; just us. If this is what makes both of us happy, why fight it? You promised, if we reach a place where you're uncomfortable, then you'll tell me. I promise you the same. So let's go and see what's out there.""Tell you what," she replied pulling me closer. "Get the rest of that wine and I'll sit on your lap and we'll finish it while we cuddle then, maybe, an early night?"I was up early next morning. We did make love the night before and it was slow, sensual and fulfilling. We'd both slept like babies. When I'd finished in the bathroom, Marie was looking at her phone. "That was a text from Peter. He and Jen are coming back from Canada on Monday and thought they might stop in to see us on the way back home." She looked worried. "Do we tell them? Or just Pete? But then how do we tell Pete without Jen hearing? Do we insist he keeps it a secret from her? ""We need to make a choice," I told her. "We're telling Linda because she deserves to know the unconventional relationship that Colin will see when Angie is here. Pete isn't in that position but, I think that if Linda knows then her brother should too. And I also think that, if Pete knows, it would be unfair to expect him to keep it from Jen. I'm not sure about discussing the rest of the girls with him; I'm tempted to tell Linda because she'll get suspicious if we're never free to look after Colin on Wednesdays if she wants to go out with Mike or if she has to work late."That's fair. I'll tell Pete that they are welcome to stay and we're looking forward to seeing them. But, Geoff?""Yes?""For pity's sake, will you move the toy box out of the playroom and make sure there's no lube or condoms left in the drawers?""I'll do it now."The rest of the day was quite mundane. Breakfast, grocery shopping, coffee at home and then a walk to the park. "I think I'm happy, Geoff," my wife announced as we strolled. "Not just content; actually happy. My friends have you in their lives, I'm even closer to them than ever and Angie," Marie's voice choked. "I've never seen her so alive. Thank you."I wasn't even tempted to be flippant. "Thank you too. It's strange, but making love to your friends seems to have brought me closer to you. I'm just so relieved you aren't jealous. You aren't are you?"She considered. "No. Truthfully; not at all. What about you?""No. Me neither. In fact, I know you have a bit of a thing for Sue, and it's, I dunno, sweet."She punched me playfully. "I still like Sam though," she admitted."So, now you have both, and me and Angie too."She gave a big happy sigh and we turned and made our way home. The weather was still fine so Marie set off at ten to four to walk to the Black Swan to meet her friends. I red for half an hour and then caught the bus into town. Linda could drop me back off at home on the way to collect Colin from Mia's house.I'd reserved a table and waited at the bar for Linda. She rushed in, all flustered, only two minutes late. "It's okay," I told her. "We're not running to a timetable here."Sorry, Dad," she apologized. "Isn't there always some clown who decides that half past four on a Friday afternoon is the perfect time to start making urgent phone calls?""Is it settled?" I asked her. "Or do you need ten minutes to make some more calls of your own?""God, no!" She laughed. "I'll start working for free after finishing time when my boss stops checking her watch when folk arrive in the morning with just minutes to spare."The waiter saw that my guest had arrived and invited us to follow him to our table. The place was quiet that early so he gave us a place with a nice view over the river."Is your job getting you down?" I asked. She worked in the distribution office for a large retailer."No, the work is fine, the people are great, it's just that our boss is so insecure in her abilities that she sticks rigidly to corporate policy, and it sometimes gets in the way of actual work.""Go on," I invited her. We didn't get to chat like this as much as I'd like."Okay. So: There are six people in our office; two men, four women. We lost both of the guys for a full day on Tuesday to go on a gender harassment awareness course. One's gay and the other is a fifty year old sweetheart. They could have done effectively the same course on-line in an hour but no, she had to make sure that her boss saw our guys in person to make her look good." She gave an exaggerated sigh. "Those lads get more grief from us girls than they'd ever; Oh! It's so frustrating.""I know," I sympathized. "I regarded part of my role as lab manager as insulating the people who actually generated income from stupid policies like that. I'd do what the law required but, if an adult technician doesn't know that it's not okay to touch a colleagues bum, no matter how cute or pert it is, a course isn't enough; a dismissal is much more effective. It solves the immediate issue and also serves 'pour encourager les autres' as your Great Gran would have said. An object lesson to the others," I said in reply to her unspoken question. We chatted in the same vein as we looked through the menu and had just finished our deliberations when our waiter appeared. We ordered spring rolls and prawn toast, I ordered a pork massaman, Linda chose a chicken panang and we decided to share a green papaya salad.

Bubblical, we read the Bible...then talk about it

Talkin' God with Uncle Luke Acts 2:14ff The work of the Holy Spirit is made plain and simple when Uncle Peter gives a big Bible talk. The work of the Holy Spirit is to make dumb people smart to what God is doing in this world by bringing you to Jesus, the Word of God. When people respond to Jesus, they gather around the apostles teaching, fellowship, break bread and pray together. That is church, plain and simple.

Sermon by the Rev. Jarrett Kerbel for the seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost, Proper 20. Today's readings are:Jeremiah 11:18-20 Psalm 54 James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a Mark 9:30-37 Readings may be found on LectionaryPage.net: https://www.lectionarypage.net/YearB_RCL/Pentecost... Please join me in the spirit of prayer. Lord God, draw near to us as we draw near to you. Lord God, grant us the gift of your saving wisdom once again, so that we may know the gentleness and kindness of your word in our hearts. In Christ's Name we pray, Amen. Please be seated. We have been in a stretch of the Gospel of Mark that's raw and hard. Two weeks ago we had the Syrophoenician woman and the horrible words Jesus exchanged with her, and her subtle words that cracked open the good news for all gentiles. Last week we had the ferocious exchange between Jesus and Peter. Jesus revealed who he was: the messiah who would suffer, die, and rise, and there was all that rebuking back and forth in the community, which helps us understand why we are scared to ask questions. This week we have this next raw passage where the disciples, the founding generation of our faith, are caught out looking embarrassed, looking and actually missing the point. And I always ask myself when I'm in this raw section of work “what's going on?” One thing that's going on is the cross has been revealed, and when the cross is revealed, the tension goes up. The story becomes unsettling: this is life and death now. The other thing that's so interesting to me is where's the editor? You would think that someone would edit this story. What movement leaves in these kinds of stories about the founding generation? You would think there would be an editor with a public relations point of view. There is none, and all the embarrassing stuff stay in. The embarrassing stories stay in. The struggle stays in the story. And we can imagine that in all these decades when the stories were passed around in the budding community of the early church, the subjects of those stories were there. Peter, John and Andrew got to hear these stories about themselves, and their relatives and friends got to hear them. “Oh, there's Uncle Peter being dense again.” “There goes Cousin Andrew, boy did he get that wrong.” I think in this lies the hint in why these stories are included. Remember in the beginning of the gospel Jesus is only teaching his disciples. He's only in a community with his disciples when he teaches. What does that tell you? It tells you that this embarrassing story was passed on by the disciples. They told this story among themselves, and that fact is crucial. That means that these disciples understood finally what Jesus was teaching at some point, because they were able to accept the sacrifice of embarrassment, the sacrifice of a little humility, for the good of the community, who needed to hear these stories. Because the struggle of the early church is the same struggle of our discipleship now. The struggle to understand what is hard to understand. The struggle to enter this way of Jesus that's hard to understand in the actual practice of our lives. So the disciples gave us a gift in their sacrifice. “Yes, tell these embarrassing stories about me, because it will help the community. It's going to help the community that's learning to sacrifice and learning to struggle.” We continue down that path of struggle and sacrifice, learning how to live this path that Jesus has offered us as the path of life, and we see both points in this gospel. They didn't ask Jesus after his second revelation of his death and resurrection because they were scared to bring up their ignorance. And then, as if proving that they aren't getting what Jesus is teaching by arguing on the way about who will be greatest, and who is going to be the top of the heap in the new kingdom, Jesus very gently calls them out and corrects them. He calls them to lives of service first. – “where the first be the last and the last be the first” - and then pushes them even further by picking up a child, and showing the child as a lesson to them about how to be in the community. See, the disciples are struggling to take an order, fully knowing that that's the mystery from death to life: that there is a demotion involved here; that we are called to lives out of glory of service; not of status but of dependence. And I want to be clear with this point that for Jesus, service is not servility. Service is not servility, and sacrifice is not self-hatred. These are common misconceptions promoted oftentimes by the church, but service is not servility and sacrifice is not self-hate. Quite the opposite: both are participation in the goodness of Christ. Both are participation in the way of Jesus and they bring out the good in us that is good for others, and the awareness that what's good for others is what's good for us. It's only when we drop our ego-centric notion of ourselves as the center and begin to live for others that we fully understand that what is good is shared; what is good for me is what is good for you. And so in that understanding servility and self-hatred are not part of the story, rather a liberation is part of the story. A liberation into the story of Christ himself, who gives all in service, to reveal the goodness in the love of God for us. I believe this teaching is utterly crucial to us. The simple act of asking people to sacrifice by putting on a mask, the simple act of asking people to sacrifice to take the vaccine, has proven so challenging to so many people that we are living with Covid long past when perhaps we should have, and many tens of thousands of people have died, because of a deep unwillingness to sacrifice and to serve the other. This is a humbling and sobering moment in our National life where many of us are standing back and saying “what is missing, that we can't take such simple measures for the common good?” Just as an aside I want to say that I'm so proud of St. Martin because our community has shown that willingness to make those small sacrifices for the common good, and that inspired me as a Christ-like work by everyone here during the last 18 months, and you need to be given thanks for that. But the larger issue still remains. Why can't we understand sacrifice? Why have we lost that virtue? And it haunts me even more because more sacrifice is to be required. It is the calling of communities like us to witness and lead and teach that sacrifice, because the world will need more. When we think about climate change, we can think and hope that technology will bail us out. There's one scenario where if we have enough Teslas, we can take the superhighways and we'll all be happy. I would love that to be true. I really hope that's how it goes. But all indications are to me that we will need some level of sacrifice to save the planet and save humanity, and our communities have a special role to tell that story, because that story that Jesus told about being betrayed, handed over, killed and risen is not just an alternative story. It's not just another way of thinking. It's not just a counter-narrative. It is the event that changed reality itself, and set us free to be a different kind of person, to be a different kind of community, that can make startling choices to serve and to sacrifice and to struggle together because we know through faith that we are part of this new world that Christ is creating, and that that world serves the good of all. Today Custard and Daleks Day Thirty one of the Spanish Lockdown, the sometimes amusing, diary of a Brit in southern Spain under the 'Alarma' - normal life has stopped.   To find out more:  https://www.thesecretspain.com Day 31 – Custard and Daleks It is Day 31 of our Spanish Lockdown; I am starting to get quite blurry eyed.  All day peering into the new computer that arrived yesterday from China, has made me quite myopic.   The first thing we did when it arrived is to wipe the whole thing down with alcohol, starting with the box it came in.  I have to hand it to Apple their logistics are to be admired.  The machine started in China moved the Chinese Export Zone and then flew to South Korea where it went on to Germany, from Germany to Portugal and from Portugal to Spain, it took more than two weeks.   It does prove that many businesses are quite capable of operating within lockdown.  The delivery driver left the parcel on the step and sat in his cab; I received an email to confirm delivery.   Chris gets his computer to himself and has spent the day doing gym classes online, to begin with this felt a bit odd, now it is just a normal part of our daily routine.   Read a Facebook post from our friend Paul Coia, he was the first voice that was heard on Channel Four television back in the UK when it began broadcasting in 1982.  Channel Four started with a raft of most peculiar programmes, quite a lot of complaints from Mary Whitehouse at the time.  There were also quite a few complaints about Paul too.  Up to that time continuity announcers were plummy accent types who had been to Eton or Sandhurst.    Paul was a Scot and, well sounded Scottish, ..outrageous!   He posted that every night he was making Birds Custard and old-fashioned stodgy puddings he had also, out of boredom, discovered an Airfix Dalek kit that he was constructing.  It had been a birthday present from the two of us more than 25 years ago.. and he had kept it all this time.   I said “you idiot, it is worth a fortune still intact and boxed up.”  I am really missing our British comfort foods.  But where to buy custard locally? The local town is a custard free zone.   Spanish puddings are flan, arroz con leche, tarta de queso, and that is about it.  The flan is like a crème caramel without the exciting crunchy top, arroz is a very very sweet rice pudding and the tarta a kind of really quite nice cheesecake, but less sweet than its American cousin and no biscuit base either.   If you want something else you need to go to a posh restaurant where you will find chocolate desserts, fruit pies and the like.   When we first came to Spain, I thought Spanish chocolate was disgusting, it had a lot less cocoa powder and was a poor product.  That has all changed and the big brands and of course Lidl’s own chocolate have vastly improved the offering and choice.   When I was a child, sweets were a weekly treat, the three of us would go to the local cooperative shop and choose one item to the value of sixpence .. about two and half pence.   We were always greeted by the friendly, over friendly Manager of the store who always came out to greet us, often lifting me up to pick something from a higher shelf.  Sometimes he would let us have extra sweets as a special treat. What a nice man I thought.   I was very sad when one day he suddenly disappeared as he was so kind to us.  We were told that there had been some sort of bookkeeping problem and the Cooperative had sacked him.   Years later I realised the truth and just why he was so tactile and generous.   Day 31 and our thoughts have turned to custard.  At school I hated custard it used to be served in great aluminium jugs and had a thick slimy skin on it.  To be honest I hated school dinners, I have never cared for boiled potatoes and the half cooked mouldy spuds that my infant school served up were quite disgusting, rather like my father’s dinner time rules, you were not allowed to leave the table until you had finished your meal and one particular Dinner Lady delighted in bullying the children into eating everything on their plate.   To this day I still avoid plain boiled potatoes. Spanish spuds are different, they really taste potatoey – actually a lot of fruit and veg from the supermarket might not be perfectly formed, but all taste much better than the fruit and veg in Britain.   It took me a while to realise that although a lot of the fruit and veg grown here is sent over to the UK.. it has to travel for quite a few days and is packed not quite ripe, so that it arrives still edible.   Here the produce arrives sometimes within hours of being picked and ripened by the sun.. really delicious.   My Uncle Peter who lived in Barcelona during the 1950s  with my Spanish Aunt Isobel, used to boast that you haven’t eaten an orange unless you have picked it from the tree yourself.  I used to think he was just showing off, but actually oranges have a completely different texture and taste, fresh from a tree.   Aunty Isobel never turned up at our house without a gift.  Our Spanish friends now are the same,  just a little something to say thank you for inviting me.   I remember once Uncle Peter’s car rolled up outside our house and Isobel emerged struggling with what looked like a great big black metal shield.   “Ohh deeee ana, I have dragged this bluddy thing alf way across Spain, but I know you will like it, so much.”   She gave the enormous metal shield to my mother.  We all gathered round to take a look.  It was repulsive, in the centre was a large brass cut out of a fish, possibly of the goldfish variety, then to one side a series of nylon cords were stuck to the metal representing reeds.  It also weighed a ton.   “You like no?” said Isobel.  My mother always polite said.. “Yes it is very lovely and an original piece I would think?”   “But of course.” said Isobel, “We Spanish produce some very fine works of art, you know.”   My mother turned the monstrosity around to see if she could find the name of the Spanish artist who had, had the gaul to produce this ugliness.  “Oh!” my mother exclaimed.  Isobel came closer to see what she had found. We all looked and there on the back was a “Made in England” sticker!   For many years the “monstrosity’ as it was called by us all, hung in our hallway and every time I used to pass it I would remind me of my crazy Spanish Aunt and her “horrible” gifts.

What’s possible (and not possible) with regards to Business? “Don’t fail to excel because your mom says you can’t. It’s just not a good enough reason… Massive, rapid, hyper-growth, is in fact very possible.” Roland Frasier If you’ve ever felt like what you want to do might be impossible, or that it will take too long, or that “no-one has done it before so it’s probably a pipe dream”… this podcast series is for you. Roland establishes that to achieve exceptional things, you must first sincerely believe that what you want to do is actually possible. If you cannot even conceive and believe that the thing you want to achieve is possible, then your amazingly powerful brain will find a way to support you in that belief.  The truth is that there are very few things that are truly impossible. In this episode, our host Roland Frasier joins us with MORE evidence that will inspire you to expand your possibilities and BELIEVE! Roland is known to be ‘The smartest guy in the room’ and this episode gives us a window into his mindset. One that will help you achieve so much more than you thought you could! To help us examine the issues, Roland discusses the five categories of commonly held beliefs about Possibility, and we hone in today on the fourth of these; Fiscal Impossibilities. Legally mandated impossibilities (Episode 83) Physical impossibilities (Episode 85) Perceptual impossibilities (Episode 87) Fiscal Impossibilities (Today) Subscribe on Apple Podcasts for next week’s episode Today, Listen for Roland’s examination of Fiscal Impossibilities • You don’t have to grow your business like everybody else. • Your friends and family and business advisors and attorneys and accountants and everyone else(!) may tell you it’s going to take 3 to 10 years… We argue that you can achieve your 10-year goals in 6 months (Peter’s argument), and I’m saying you can follow my 4 step plan to 10X your business in the next 12 months. Listen for some hyper-rapid scaling case studies that support what Uncle Peter and I are saying and prove how fast it is possible to scale revenue, customers, and employees... • Desktop Metal (3-D printing company) hit $1 billion valuation in 21 months. • Groupon reached $1 billion in sales in just over 2 years. • One year after launch, Google was answering 3.5 million search queries, per day. • Tesla has hired 37,000 employees over the past 9 years. • Grail (cancer-fighting company) was worth $1 billion a year and 9 months after it started. • Electric Scooter Company, Bird, reached $1 billion valuation in only 2 months after its first funding round. • Priceline reached $1 billion in sales in just over 2 years. • Amazon scaled from 11 employees at start-up in 1997 to 614 just 2 years later. One year later it had 2,100! It then added 3,500 employees per year each of the 2 following years. And, here’s the whopper, Amazon added 335,200 new employees in the 2 years between 2015 and 2017. • Groupon handled $2 billion in Billings in its first 2 years. • LinkedIn reached 1 million users in its first 494 days of operations. • Office Depot reached $1 billion in sales in less than 5 years. • YouTube had 1 billion users in 8 years and 1 month • Alibaba went from 0% to 84% of all eCommerce purchases in China in just 4 years. • Facebook reached its first 100 million users in just 55 months and its 2nd 100 million 8 months later. It was worth $1 billion just over 2 years after founding and hit the magical 1 billion user mark 8 years and 8 months after it began. • Juul (the vaping company) was founded in May 2015, and less than 36 months later it owned 72% of the e-cigarette market. It grew from its first funding round to a valuation of $10 billion in just 7 months. • WhatsApp hit 1 billion users in 8 years and 6 months. So, when you’re telling yourself that it’s impossible to grow your $10k, $100k, $1M or $10M business 10x in the next 12 months, just read through that list above and remind yourself of how much easier it is for you to 10x your business than it was for them, and just how very possible it is for you to make it happen in your business. Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind—“A Good Woman is Hard to Find” By Karen E. B. Elliott, English Department Faculty February 26, 2019   Margaret Mitchell was once quoted as saying that “in a time of weakness, I wrote a novel.” Well, if writing one of the most read, translated, and published novels in the world was a weakness, I am sorry that she died so young that we’d never get to see her strengths. I decided to teach this novel a few years ago, and without a doubt, for most of my students, whether male or female, black or white, it’s their favorite. There are few novels whose characterization is so rich, even for the minor characters. At first, however, many of my students struggle—the novel is distinctly Southern—and for most of my beloved Northern, New England, so-called Progressive Massachusetts types, Mitchell dispels a lot of myths. She openly condemns Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and she attacks a couple of women from Maine in one particular scene (where they make racist remarks to Uncle Peter) that will make you want to change those coastal vacation plans. Mitchell shows that racism is not just a Southern problem, nor is it still. It’s a Northern one.  And according to Mitchell, what makes the Northerners far worse than the Southerners is that behind their supposed intellect, their apparent logic, and progressive politics, you’ve got a region of hypocrites who wear anti-slavery superhero capes, but what they’re really after is money, profit, political support, and all for the building of a new economy based on the rise of industrialization. The heart of the matter is accurately expressed by the famous Rhett Butler who not only predicts the war’s outcome, but also accurately pegs (and despises) the root of most issues—it’s hypocrisy.  He says to Scarlett, “It’s only hypocrites like you, my dear lady, just as black at heart but trying to hide it, who become enraged when called by their right names” (Mitchell 223).  This definitely applies to all of us, as the American way is to wear your best façade to church, work, school, or on your college application. As Christians, then, it is easy to identify with Scarlett, despite what we feel for or about her. She does not stand for any cause which will actually cost her anything.  She is truly ambivalent—we are attracted to her because we support her ability to survive and beat the odds, to play the world at their own game and seemingly win, but we are repulsed by some of her choices and what drives her to make them.  I have found that characters my students struggle with the most are the ones we can most identify with. She is, as Rhett declared, a hypocrite.  She feigns righteousness when she needs to get something, and her true nature arises when she is cornered like a cat.  She can be vicious.  And at the heart of it all, she doesn’t really care that much about what other people think—only if it means that it exempts her from the best parties.  She covets another woman’s husband; she marries her sister’s fiancé, but she loves her home and will do anything to save it, even if it means offering herself physically.  “I won’t let the Yankees [the world] lick [or take advantage of] me” she continually says, and don’t we all feel this way? She lives in a world that clearly doesn’t respect women—certainly does not acknowledge their intellect—and she knows that the world revolves around money, so she will do anything to get it, and all the time she rationalizes this acquisition.  She does believe in God, but she does not trust that He has her best interests in mind; in fact, she doesn’t believe that anyone does.  In many ways, she is the quintessential American woman, which is not flattering. Mitchell, however, does not allow her reader to laud her main character or rationalize her choices, much like we Christians like to do.  Scarlett is contrasted by Melanie Hamilton Wilkes, who Rhett claims (and makes no other claim like it about any other woman i...
