My guest today is Dr. Alex Korb, author of the book Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time.Dr. Korb is a neuroscientist, writer, and coach. He has studied the brain for over 20 years, having earned his undergraduate degree in neuroscience at Brown University and then later completed his Ph.D. in neuroscience at UCLA. He has published over a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles on depression, neuromodulation, and other topics. He is currently an adjunct assistant professor at UCLA in the department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences. Outside of the lab he writes a popular blog on how the tendencies of your brain can ruin or enrich your life. As a speaker he educates, motivates, and inspires organizations to understand the neuroscience of wellbeing and put it into practice. As a consultant he works with companies and organizations to help them improve communication about neuroscience and enhance employee wellbeing. He has coached the UCLA Women's Ultimate Frisbee team for over 15 years and is a 3 time award winner for USA Ultimate's Coach of the Year. His expertise extends into leadership and motivation, mindfulness, physical fitness, and even stand-up comedy.I first heard about Dr. Korb's book through another podcast guest, Linda Hoopes. The name of the book, Upward Spiral, immediately grabbed my attention and within a couple of days I was reading it. Upward Spiral has two parts to it: the first is a description of what is understood about the neuroscience of depression (written in a language that's mostly understandable for the lay person like myself) and the second is focused on actions we can take to lessen the negative impacts of depression in our lives and how each of those actions cause changes in the brain. I love that combination as I find it gives me greater motivation to know the why behind recommended behavior changes!I'm delighted to share this conversation with you and hope it'll be as inspiring to you as it has been for me. There are links in the shownotes to Dr. Korb's website and the book Upward Spiral.Dr. Korb – thank you for this fantastic and motivating conversation. Thank you for the work you do in the world and for sharing it in a way that's understandable and applicable for all of us who aren't neuroscientists but who want to help our brain be in its best functioning state!Website: https://www.alexkorbphd.comBook: Upward Spiral Make Life Less Difficult

The concept of literacy is not foreign to anyone. Indeed, we all realize the importance of the ability to read and write in terms functioning in the world. Lack of literacy is considered a societal tragedy that the developed world attempts to avoid at all costs. When basic literacy is lacked within an individual (or population) life closes in and gets very small, achievement is limited, and life lacks fulfillment and a sense of purpose. All consequences that should be avoided at all costs. Although we're all very familiar with the concept of academic literacy, physical literacy is a term that many of us might find confusing or odd at first glance. This is mostly because the term has been underutilized and to the detriment of our society and our health, as physical literacy researcher and advocate Dr. Anthony Moreno explains in episode 40 of the Wellness Paradox Podcast. Just as academic literacy involves learning the basic set of skills an individual can take into the rest of their life to be literate in reading and writing, physical literacy does that same thing, but in a physical domain. Instead of spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension, physical literacy focuses on the motor skills associated with physical movement. When someone develops and fosters these skills at a young age (really any age) and maintains them throughout the lifespan their opportunities to be healthy, fulfilled and engage with the world expand exponentially. At the same time their level of disease and illness decrease dramatically. The tragic and objective reality is we currently have a very physical illiterate society. Physical education classes are being phased out of schools and/or taught by unqualified staff. Youth sports are becoming increasingly competitive, where only the best athletes have the ability to play frequently. Over 75% of Americans DO NOT meet the current physical activity recommendations for aerobic and muscle strengthening exercise. No matter how you view it, our society is physically illiterate and becoming more so by the day as technology makes our lives more sedentary. Just as with academic literacy, when this happens; life closes in and gets very small, achievement is limited, and life lacks fulfillment and a sense of purpose, mostly driven by ill-health. There is a solution to a population-based approach to becoming more physically literate as a society and it starts with fitness pros and fitness clubs. The fitness industry and its professionals have the infrastructure, knowledge, and resources to implement many of the existing government guidance to improve physical activity levels and thereby physical literacy. In this podcast Dr. Moreno explores this concept further as well as actionable steps (pun intended) the health/fitness industry can take today to combat the physical literacy crisis in America. Our Guest: Dr. Anthony Moreno, PhDDr. Tony Moreno is a Professor of Kinesiology at Eastern Michigan University with focus in biomechanics, youth sport, and pediatric exercise science. He has authored educational materials regarding athlete development, physical literacy, performance enhancement, and injury prevention for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, USA Lacrosse, USA Ultimate, USA Hockey, the Society of Health and Physical Educators, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. In addition, Professor Moreno is the proprietor of Atletika USA, a movement, physical activity, and sport programming consulting firm based in mid-Michigan. Professor Moreno holds graduate adjunct faculty positions at both Michigan State University and West Virginia University and was recently appointed to serve on both the Michigan Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health, and Sports, on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Fitness Foundation, and on the Medical/Science Advisory Board for the Michigan Fitness Club Association.

Henry is a mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, graphic user interface designer and computer scientist. He received BS degree in 1982 and MS degree in 1984 from Carnegie-Mellon University. Upon graduation, Henry joined General Motors Corporation. During his five years there, among his many accomplishments were the invention of the first weld path adjustment system, the invention of the first fully automatic tool center point calibration system (eliminated the single largest cause of downtime in automated arc welding); the design and implementation of the world's largest automated arc welding system (still running today with the lowest downtime in the auto industry); and the development of a spot weld controller (software installed on thousands of robotic welding machines). Further, Henry invented and patented the world's leading system for calibrating robotic tools, still licensed to ABB. In 1990, Henry left General Motors Corporation and founded Cycle Time Corporation to design and market "Tophat," a graphic user interface for robotic welding. Under contract to ALCOA, he also invented the first system for real time arc weld quality measurement, still the best available measurement of the quality of a weld as it is being produced. Evan Lepler is the AUDL’s lead play-by-play announcer for ESPN3. He also calls games for USA Ultimate’s Triple Crown Tour and College Championships. His goal is to introduce more casual sports fans to ultimate, and getting league games broadcast on ESPN3 is a good first step. Lepler stumbled into ultimate in his first year at Wake Forest University. In his first week on campus, he spotted a flyer for ultimate in his dorm and headed to the quad to check it. He played barefoot for hours and was hooked. The summer between freshman and sophomore year he threw for one or two hours a day, and eventually captained the men’s squad at Wake Forest for two years. Evan wanted to be a sports broadcaster since he was 8 or 9 years old, so after graduation, he decided not to get involved in the ultimate club scene, which would require practices on nights and weekends, in favor of working his way up the broadcast ladder. Ken began playing Ultimate in the summer of 2007 and found leadership opportunity in organizing his high school ultimate club. Attending Kettering University in 2009, Ken quickly worked on establishing a team, pursuing varsity status and full funding granted 2.5 years later.
