When Graham isn't seeing people at his clinic he is hard at work with the Moncton Wildcats, Go cats go! Winning the Memorial Cup is always the goal and maybe this year that will happen. We had an amazing discussion and Graham is so good at telling stories, especially about when he needed a suit at the last minute to be hired for the Wildcats job. Hey beautiful souls, This episode is a fascinating discussion with Kendra Toothill -- We talk all about SCARS. And before you press 'skip' and move on because you can't imagine what scars has to do with the quality of your present day life ... pull a chair up. Turns out that the scars we carry (visible and invisible) hold potent stories and the work that Kendra does helps uncover and heal both the physical and emotional energy within. Kendra began discovering the potential of scar tissue as an Athletic Therapist working in elite-level sports over ten years ago. Over her professional career, she has been refining her geeky scar obsession, which has ultimately birthed a holistic healing method that helps people make sense of their multiple health symptoms in an integrative way, using scars as an anchor point into deep physical, emotional and energetic healing. In this episode we talk about: The definition of scar and what role they play in the healing process. How Kendra came to this work and made her way into this niche treatment. From Athletic Therapist to scar and deep fascial work and working with women who do breast explant surgery. How scars contribute to various bodily dysfunctions, including digestive and breathing problems, nervous system issues, anxiety, and chronic pain. Working on scars to assist the body in rewiring more productive nervous system patterns. The role of emotional and energetic healing in the scar treatment process. The emotional implications of surgery, injuries and often birthing experiences that are held in the scar tissue of the body. The dysfunction in surrounding muscles and how the scar attempts to priotize the healing of tissue to provide safety and security. The opportunity for emotional and physical healing when you address scars in the body. What PDTR (Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex) treatment is and how Kendra uses it in her treatment. Kendra's in-person work in Uvita, Costa Rica as well as her online offerings and in-person retreats in Austin, Texas. Timestamp of today's episode: 00:00 Praises Kendra's impactful work with scars. 04:51 Fascination with scars led to healing practice. 10:30 Body compensates for injuries, requires ongoing care. 14:16 Emotional healing through physically working scar tissue. 16:28 Learning to work with emotional scars deeply. 20:24 Remaining neutral while observing client's emotional connection. 24:44 Courage in holistic practice, acknowledging emotions crucial. 28:38 PDTR quickly rewires nervous system, removes trauma. 31:08 Scar tissue affects body dysregulation, needing rewiring. 33:46 Diverse experiences after breast explant surgery. 37:43 Physical injury led to self-doubt, introspection, healing. 41:40 Avoid stimulus, focus on natural healing process. 44:17 Developing online sessions and in-person retreats. 48:37 Gratitude for listeners and call to action. Notable moments during the episode: The Transformative Power of Healing Scars: "And it just kind of began this experiment of really seeing how much you can unpack in a single scar. And so it has a huge hold and restraint physically on the tissues local but also general to the whole body and all the body systems. But it has this really important piece that I really love that opens up the whole kind of gateway of what really a healing journey is and that's working with the emotional body and how the energetic signature can really get literally entangled and encapsulated inside the scar tissue." — Kendra Toothill The Significance of Scar Tissue in Healing Processes: "The scar is just any kind of mending process that has happened where the tissue has healed in some way to form a different bond. The actual components of scar tissue is different than your muscle tissue or your skin or your ligament tendon." — Kendra Toothill Respecting the Body's Healing Process: "So when people do hurt themselves and they do have an open wound from accident surgery, giving birth, I always say, like, step one, let the body do what it needs and wants to do. It is seeking a solid, firm, stable anchor point." — Kendra Toothill Healing Emotional Trauma Through Scar Tissue Therapy: "And why I love working with the emotions in this way, using the body as a way to stay grounded and in connection with yourself, is when these emotions come up to be processed, you're pretty embodied at that point, like you're building a relationship up with the scar. You're understanding your processes and why things are happening." — Kendra Toothill Emotional Scar Tissue and Healing: "And if you were a little child, that created a lot of confusion and that energetic signature of feeling abandoned goes right into the scar tissue." — Kendra Toothill Emotional Healing and Physical Contact: "You can't grab happiness or fear out of the air, but when you work with it from being in your body and touching your body and making contact with yourself, it allows those emotions to be worked and explored in a more nourishing way." — Kendra Toothill More About Kendra Toothill: Kendra Toothill began discovering the potential of scar tissue as an Athletic Therapist working in elite-level sports over ten years ago. Over her professional career, she has been refining her geeky scar obsession, which has ultimately birthed a holistic healing method that helps people make sense of their multiple health symptoms in an integrative way, using scars as an anchor point into deep physical, emotional and energetic healing. As best she can, Kendra strives to walk her talk, which is centered around being empowered through your own healing process, taking chances, being curious (& dorky!), not taking life too seriously and swallowing the "red pill" of self-responsibility, self-awareness and living a life aligned to truth. Kendra now lives in Costa Rica, and when she is not guiding people through a health and healing process, you will find her exploring nature, enjoying exotic fruits and soaking up the epic sunshine! Maggie Dunlop came to the marathon a bit later in life, but she is making up for lost time with a major drive to succeed. Maggie has worked as an Athletic Therapist with various sports disciplines and then added Doctor of Chiropractic to her tool belt. She now works with athletes and patients in Burlington, ON. Maggie has had a quick succession of great races, thanks in part to her training with coach and longtime friend Leanne Klassen, including BQing in her first marathon and making the podium at the Toronto Half Marathon this year. Her most recent marathon didn't go as well as she had hoped, and we talked about why it's just as valuable to have a bad day as it is to have an amazing one. Theme music: Joseph McDade
This EP is near to my heart. My guest Jodi van Rees is the real definition of a pioneer. This is a story of overcoming hardship, challenging hurdles, and impossible barriers to become one of the first women on the bench or on the sidelines of men's professional sport. It's worth your time.Prior to her work in the corporate world, Jodi was a Certified Athletic Therapist and a Massage Therapist, and a pioneer in the field. She worked her way up from university hockey to pro roller hockey, to Major Junior Hockey, and finally to the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens. She was a pioneer for women in the field becoming the first woman to work as an Athletic Therapist in the Quebec Major Junior hockey league, and the first woman to be an Athletic Therapist behind the bench in the NHL. Since leaving the NHL, Jodi has served as a Disability Management specialist in the insurance industry for the last 20 years and she is currently working as a Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement Advisor with Telus Health, formerly known as LifeWorks. Beyond all her achievements she is also a great partner to her husband Matt and mother of her boy Nolan. About Sherry Shaban: Montreal-based podcaster, YouTuber and fitness and life coach, Sherry Shaban, is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified Athletic Therapist, an Osteopath, and the Director of Fitness for Rock Thomas's M1 Mastermind. With over 20 years of experience in her specialty, Sherry has dedicated her life to helping thousands of people transform their Athletic identity to become who they are meant to be through a unique anti-diet, self loving, simple approach. Sherry believes that our physical body is the direct reflection of our internal environment and that transformation happens from the inside out. Sherry's passion of helping others through their own health & wellness transformation journey stems from her own trials and tribulations: at the tender age of 16, Sherry was hit by a car, and the outcome of that accident nearly left her paralyzed. She underwent her first back surgery one month before her 17th birthday. The second surgery in 2012 came at a time when she was just opening her first CrossFit gym in Montreal. She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where she discovered she was just 2 millimeters away from paralysis. Through private coaching, her signature online coaching programs, "Making Peace with Food" and "Advanced PowHer", her YouTube workouts and podcast, Sherry works with a diverse population of Athletes - from beginners to professionals athletes. She believes that we all have an obstacle - whether it be a struggle with injury, weight, past traumas or limiting beliefs. “Overcoming the obstacle first starts with changing our belief systems,” she says. “If we think we can't, then we will always be right.” Sherry has been featured on various podcast shows such as Stop Stretching with Yogi Aaron, Leader's Lab with Ken Eslick, The Wellness Hour with Dr Amy Novotny, and Mission Matters. What We Discuss In This Episode: Sherry shares her powerful journey where for the first few years of being a gym owner, she felt like a phony. She was frustrated with herself, disappointed and angry for being a “victim” of her circumstances, unable to demonstrate a single squat. But her turning point towards recovery came from understanding that one of the central elements to transformation is to let go of debilitating and self-limiting thoughts, and to begin to rewrite a new story. Sherry has made it her life mission to help others do the same: releasing self-doubt, create a new belief system and athletic identity, and become the person they are always meant to be. Sherry refers to her clients as “Athletes,” helping them unplug from diet culture and exercise-punishment, and step into a new relationship with their body, mind and environment. She helps her Athletes view food as fuel for performance, recovery and transformation and their training as a lifestyle ritual that becomes a basis of the Athletic mindset. We discuss “Fat Loss 101”, which is a big thing for women in perimenopause, even postmenopausal. Mindset definitely plays a role. Sherry loves this topic as she's often asked, “How do you eat? How do you count your calories? What are your macros? Or what are your what is your exercise?” Sherry is an intuitive eater, an intuitive mover, and an intuitive exerciser. When we're focused on diet, and especially if we're following an app or we're following a particular handout that our nutritionist gave us, we're bypassing the body's natural intuitive cues as to when we should eat, how much we should eat, and when we should stop eating. In North America and in Western societies where we have the most abundance of foods, and we have the most abundance and information -- and the most abundance of different types of diet, it's interesting that we're the ones struggling the most with disease. We're the ones who are struggling the most with overweight and with health. Why is that? Because we are so confused. Fat Loss 101 has to start with releasing diets because diets don't work. What does work, though, is starting to add habits that align with your lifestyle that you can find them sustainable over time. With a diet mentality, we usually have the mindset of, “Oh, I can't have cake this week, because I'm on a diet,” or you go to a barbecue, and it's “I can't have that glass of wine, or I can't have a second helping of food because I'm sticking to the macros on my app.” Whenever we say the word can't in our mind, what we're really saying is that we want it, but we're not allowing ourselves to have it. So, ditch diets & start to incorporate habits that are sustainable. Sherry says one of the best habits, that is really the gift that keeps on giving, is walking. All you need is a pair of shoes, you go outside, you connect with nature, you disconnect with the electronics, everything else at home. And as you're walking as you're moving, it is such a low intensity movement, that it's not going to stress the joints, and it's going to just give you pleasure. We also talk about hormones – the two most important hormones relating to weight are insulin and cortisol. Sherry shares what they are, what they do, and the impact on our lives if they're out of balance. Also, when we're stressed, it's hard to fall asleep, or when we've watched a movie or watch news that's extremely disturbing, it starts to impact the rest of our day and gets in the way of our sleep. When we sacrifice our sleep, and we don't get proper rest and restful sleep, what ends up happening is we start to deeply even imbalanced the hormones and start on that vicious cycle of cravings and hunger. We touched on intermittent fasting – a huge topic in the health and wellness space right now -- and how we can receive benefits from intermittent fasting in as little as 12 hours. “The sky's the limit. Mischa is another one of those guys that's spent a lot of time racing bikes on a pro level, which has set him up well for the rest of his career. Mischa started riding BMX as a kid and took up racing at the late(ish) age of 11. He progressed quickly and wound up racing for many years on the Canadian National BMX team internationally, which gave him a great understanding of the world of high-performance sport and a unique perspective that many people don't have. BMX racing is an extremely high intensity sport, and having spent his fair share of time injured and working with therapists and learning how to rehabilitate himself, Mischa developed an interest in physical therapy and exericise therapy himself. These experiences lead Mischa to pursue a career in exercise therapy - he gained a bachelor's degree in sports and exercise therapy and is a certified athletic therapist. Following his passion for racing and competition, Mischa spent a season working with the Candian National BMX team, this time as their travelling therapist and now is working with Volleyball Canada, despite admittedly not being a volleyball buff, the human body still works and responds the same.Mischa is a super talented and interesting person with a lot of knowledge and passion to share with the rest of us. Tune in and listen to his story!

Deanna began her practice as an Athletic Therapist in 1995, always focusing on deep tissue work. Unfortunately, as successful as her business was, Deanna's physical health and mental wellbeing were eluding her.In 2000, Deanna experienced a major breakthrough. While experiencing the worst of a series of anxiety attacks, Deanna intuitively pushed her hand into her abdomen and, at that moment, began a path of self-discovery. In a short period of time, Deanna's body began to change. The weight was dropping, the chronic pain and issues were improving and, most importantly, the depression and anxiety disappeared. She immediately began applying this to her existing patients and the results were immediate and outstanding.Deanna's journey working with individuals has been very rewarding, yet her true passion is to teach people how to self-care. Block Therapy is the solution. Deanna has taken what she did in the treatment room and translated it into a self-help practice using a handcrafted wooden block, called the Block Buddy. This simple, efficient, and inexpensive approach is gaining credibility as people around the world are experiencing the benefits of Block Therapy and sharing with others.Deanna's work benefits people of all ages, as well as any condition. His foundation, Champions for Life, is making a difference in the lives of so many young people.
