DIZNEY COAST TO COAST - The Ultimate Unofficial Disney Fan Podcast
Disney fans rejoice! Today on the show I'm chatting with Mike Van Eaton of Van Eaton Galleries. Van Eaton Galleries is a shop and auction house in Southern California specializing in animation and the entertainment industry, often focusing on Disney memorabilia. At a Van Eaton auction, you can often find the smallest Disney item, like a park ticket, all the way up to something as large as a ride vehicle or giant piece of park signage. One of the many cool things about Van Eaton Galleries is that these items are put on display for the public to see for free before they're sold or auctioned off. Listen as Mike and I discuss some of the wild items that have come through his doors, the mindset of a collector, and how people get their hands on some of these remarkable items in the first place. That and so much more in this episode. ------ GIVEAWAYS, BONUSES, SUPPORT, AND SAVE: Gain early access to episodes, take part in Ask Me Anything live streams, and gain more bonuses by joining the DCTC Patreon. DittyTV host Mark Edgar Stuart goes in depth with longtime Sun Studio session drummer, J.M. Van Eaton, the man that you can thank for rippin' rhythms on tracks like “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin',” by Jerry Lee Lewis. He ventured into Sun Studios around 1955, when Rock and Roll was first being invented, or discovered, if that's the way you want to look at it. He's a devout and dignified man with enough stories to fill a book. For any book publishers out there, that's your cue. Until that gets goin', you can get a glimpse into some of his exciting experiences here in this conversation. Recorded Feb. 2019 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In general, you can tell how well a conversation went by how long the show runs. At just past the two hour mark, you get an idea of how well things went with Lon Van Eaton, one-time Apple recording artist and protege of George Harrison. In addition to being one half of the Van Eaton brothers, who issued an album and single in the US in 1972, he did session work for Ringo beginning with the 1973 self-titled release (and performed live with him on TV), as well as other 1970s acts produced by Richard Perry. He went on to good works with his charitable organization, Imagine A Better World, inspired by examples gleaned from The Beatles. While this may be the most spiritual discussion yet had on SATB, it is also perhaps one of the most lighthearted. One can easily see how Lon connected with George and Ringo particularly: being equal parts deep-thinker/philosopher and everyman comedian. Lon witnessed life with the ex-Beatles (and acolytes like Klaus Voormann, Pete Ham and Harry Nilsson) up close. He has the stories and the insight – you don’t want to miss this one. Lon’s new album is called Cupid. Find it at Imagineabetterworld.com The post 153: Lon Looks Back (And Forward) appeared first on Something About The Beatles.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that JM (Jimmy) Van Eaton was at rock and roll ground zero. It certainly didn’t hurt that he was unknowingly living in one of the great hot beds for American music, 1950s Memphis, TN. Although it’s no longer in the top echelon of music cities, being significantly overshadowed by its eastern neighbor a mere 200 miles away, Memphis paved the way for future generations of rock, RnB, country, and jazz musicians. After a long stretch of living in rural West Tennessee JM recently retired from his long-time occupation in financial services. I caught up with JM at his new residence is Memphis. From there we discussed his upbringing and how it led to his initial musical training on trumpet. He soon moved to percussion in his school’s concert band and subsequently cobbled together a complete drum set using different pieces from their percussion cabinet. Van Eaton transitioned to professional gigs ultimately landing him at the world-famous Sun Recording Studios. JM quickly moved from demo sessions to master tracks. The rhythm section on one of the sessions included a young, hungry up and coming pianist named, Jerry Lee Lewis. JM continued playing sessions and live gigs with Jerry Lee and ended up on several of Lewis’ iconic hits including, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”. Aside from his long-standing relationship with Lewis, JM played on over 200 records and has worked with legendary musicians, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins to name but a few. We finish up hearing about his recent playing endeavors and then we run him through the gauntlet that is the Drummer’s Weekly Groovecast, Rorschach Test. Join us every Monday for brand new episodes. We can be found on Itunes, Google Play Podcasts, Stitcher, Podbean, Soundcloud and everywhere you listen to your favorite show. Also, please visit our web site at www.drummersweeklygroovecast.com. Plus, Disneyland turns 62, and we celebrate by remembering some of Disneyland's memorable anniversaries.
Mickey is turning 88 this week, and Team Mousetalgia invites you to celebrate with us! First, we welcome Mike Van Eaton back to the show to discuss "Souvenirs of Disneyland," an upcoming exhibition and auction of Disneyland memorabilia and merchandise. From a pen in the shape of a woman's leg to a scale Imagineering model of New Orleans Square, this major auction is destined to make history. Then, we celebrate Mickey's birthday by catching up with Disney comic writer Pat McGreal, who talks to Mousetalgia about his quarter century of giving life to Mickey Mouse and his friends. Jeff discusses the persistence of vision via Fields' famed "Art of Walt Disney" book, and then we continue our birthday celebration with a round table discussion of Mickey Mouse shorts, Mickey Mouse collectibles, Mickey Mouse in the parks, Mickey Mouse songs, and more. Plus - Disneyland Paris goes to hyperspace; tutus rule, Guardians take the tower - and more. Special note: Jeff will be appearing Saturday, Nov. 19 at Creature Features in Burbank from 1 to 3 p.m. to sign his book "The Unauthorized Story of Walt Disney's Haunted Mansion."
Dave and Becky report on their recent experience at the Disneyland Tinker Bell Half Marathon, and talk about the state of runDisney, the race experience and routes, the switch to PhotoPass for Disney's half marathon photography, and runDisney's new virtual 5K runs. Also, Van Eaton Galleries will be hosting another Disney auction, and we welcome Mike Van Eaton to the show to discuss some of the jaw-dropping items that will be featured in June's "Collecting Disney" auction. From the original score to "Minnie's Yoo Hoo" to a Mickey Mouse doll that Walt Disney gave to a dear friend from his time in France during WWI, the new auction continues to amaze Disneyana collectors with materials from Kay Kamen, the original Mickey Mouse Club, the studio's early feature films, "lost" materials, rare toys - and more. Plus - a sad week for Disney, Dixieland Band Camp memories, "Minnie-ature" Cream Lip Stain, and more.
Lon & Derrek Van Eaton were a singing duo in the early 70s. They partied at Andy Warhol's and open for legends like the Doors, David Bowie and the Moody Blues. In addition to being excellent musicians, what makes them a small part of rock history is the fact they were discovered by the Beatles. George Harrison heard their demo, signed them to Apple records and flew them to England to record their debut album, 1972's Brother. Unfortunately, the album underperformed and Apple went out of business shortly thereafter. Lon and Derrek then relocated to LA where they put out one more album and got work as session musicians. Today, Derrek has settled nicely in the Denver suburbs. His story is pretty fascinating.
Don Hahn joins Mousetalgia this week to talk about a special PBS SoCal show airing on December 17: "Richard M. Sherman: Songs of a Lifetime." Listen in as we talk about Richard Sherman and this television special, developed and produced by Don Hahn, and also discuss Hahn's latest forays into the preservation and celebration of the art of animation. Next, Jeff reports on a WDFM panel discussion featuring Disney Legend Jack Lindquist and the Disneyland Ambassador program, and we learn how the program came about, what the program was intended for, and how it has evolved through today, with stories from a few of the ambassadors. Then, Kristen reviews Pixar's "The Good Dinosaur," and we give last-minute trip tips for Disneyland during the holiday season. Can Christmas Eve be navigated successfully at Disneyland Park? Plus - a new Disney shopping app, Van Eaton's latest auction, Heroes and Villains con - and more!
Disney is a place that is always changing. Posters get replaced, ride cars get re-designed, costumes get updated. But the old stuff has to go someplace, right? We get to learn where and how these relics of Disney's past get into the hands of regular people like us, for today, we talk all about ... Disney Auctions at the Van Eaton Gallery But first ... Bev thinks Disney has too much money because she has seen people throw paper money into the water. We get this show moving pretty quickly and shift our normal business to the end of the show, because we want to get to Mike Van Eaton, who runs Van Eaton galleries. Mike puts on what is considered the best Disney auction, and he has items in his collection that will blow you away. Chatting with Mike about some of these pieces was really fun, because you can hear his passion for the parks and the history these pieces represent. We also get into what we should be looking for in today's Disney collectible market and what will increase in value. After Mike, we head back to the beginning of the show and do some feedback. Jason responds to a previous listener Cliff who commented on our last show about how Jason and Taren bashed Walt Disney World (which wasn't the case but whatever). Taren's Thinks for this show is pretty good if you are in to diet gum. Oddly enough, Terrence agrees with her. Bev jumps in to her window presentation on Roger Broggie, who was in charge of the train system in Disneyland, among other things. Then we fire off a gassy Fact of the Show, and that's it! See you in the parks!

You can own a piece of Disneyland history this month when Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks, California, auctions off more than 1,000 items from an extensive private collection of unique Disneyland vintage memorabilia. An audio-animatronic skeleton from Pirates of the Caribbean, original dolls from it's a small world, panels from early Monorail trains, and a miniature pot-bellied stove handcrafted by Walt Disney himself are among the big ticket items to be bid on. More reasonably priced items include all manner of artwork, shopping bags, guidebooks and other souvenirs. On hand to discuss the significance and history of many of these items are Mike Van Eaton with Van Eaton Galleries and Disney Imagineering Legend Bob Gurr. www.TheMouseCastle.com
