Kathleen from Plenty of Sunshine Travel met with Hilary from Avalon Waterways for this week's cruise chat. . I found it interesting that Avalon does not refurbish their ships. They do not rebuild their ships. They buy new ships. So, you know you will stay on the best of the best! Avalon's staterooms are set up so the moment you awake, you are immersed in the area you visit. The bed is angled, so you wake up to the most beautiful views. . Avalon Waterways is a part of the Globus family of brands. Globus is a land tour specialist, making their shared app fantastic! You don't need to be connected to a cell tower or wifi. Everything is pre-loaded and available offline. The app also can direct you back to the ship, so if you are lost, you can find your way back ~ stress free! . Some of the itineraries we talked about are The Blue Danube. Starting in Deggendorf, you visit Linz, Mauthausen, Grein, Krems, Spitz, and Visegrad ending in Budapest. You can also visit Lyon, Tain L'Hermitage, Tournon, Viviers, Avignon, Arles and ending in Port Saint- Louis. You can also add Paris before your cruise. A brand new itinerary for 2023 is one called "Lower Danube" This itinerary starts in Zebrab and visits Osijek, Novi Sad, Belgrade, Golbac, Lepenski Vir, Donji Milanovac, Vidin, Belogradchik, Nikopol, Arbanassi, Veliko Tarnovo, Oltenita and ending in Bucharest. What are the big travel trends for 2022? We're so glad you asked! We discuss them, along with a chat about the world's most beautiful graveyards (yes, really) and why you should see them before you, er, die. We then invite Bulgaria In Your Pocket publisher and editor, Paromita Sanatani, into our fantasy departure lounge to ask her all about her adopted home country and why you should go there.  After kicking off the episode with our Where in the World quiz (answer at the end of the show), we chat about staycations, upgrading your vacay, slow travel and letting the train take the strain in our review of this year's predicted travel trends. In our Top 5 slot we look into historyhit.com's list of the five most beautiful cemeteries in the world - Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, USA; La Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Prague's Old Jewish Cemetery, Czech Republic; Highgate Cemetery, London and Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. But who is buried there, why should you go, have you ever been, what do Heidi and Andrea think of these picks and have either of them ever scribed Smiths lyrics on Oscar Wilde's tomb?  And who do we meet in our fantasy VIP departure lounge? Why, it's travel guru and Bulgaria expert, Paromita Sanatani, who tells us about her journey from India via the UK to her adopted home in Bulgaria, where she's lived for almost 30 years. So she's perfectly placed to tell us all about Bulgaria's major attractions, why it's the perfect location for skiers as well as sun-seekers, and what she likes, and doesn't like, about cities including Sophia, Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo. Don't book your trip without listening to Paromita's advice first.  SUBSCRIBE to our podcast, you know you want to! Episode 173 - Thomas Lecaque, PhD. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Thomas Lecaque, PhD. Thomas is a dual citizen, France and the United States. He was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris, France, and spent the first two years of his life in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, where his parents were professors at the University Ss. Cyril and Methodius. They moved to the U.S. when Thomas was two, and he grew up in Kirksville, Missouri, where his parents were professors at Truman State University. In high school, Thomas was in choir and theater, and his passion for musicals has never waned. Thomas met Tommy the summer after his senior year of high school, when they were both in a community theater production of Pippin. Thomas started his undergraduate career as a theater major at Tulane University in New Orleans. He left in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina and transferred to Truman State University, where he completed his bachelor's in history in 2007 and got married to his wife Annie a month later. They did a master's program in English together at Truman. Thomas started his Ph.D. program in medieval history at the University of Tennessee eight weeks later. He graduated in 2015, and taught at UTK for a year. He then taught at SUNY-Orange, a community college in downstate New York for a year. Since 2017 he has been an assistant professor of history at Grand View University in Iowa. He and Annie live in the Des Moines metro area with their four kids, three boys and a girl. In addition to teaching a wide range of history classes and an annual class on video games and history, Thomas has started doing community theater again (well, was pre-pandemic) and has indulged in the great Iowan past time of national politics, now writing occasional public history and commentary pieces for places like The Washington Post, Foreign Policy and The Bulwark.
