I sit on the Investment Committee of the AIM-listed Onward Opportunities investment fund managed by Dowgate Wealth. I have a personal investment in Onward. Dowgate Group owns 9.26% of Transense Technologies PLC, of which Onward Opportunities owns 6.96%. Last year, Onward's fund manager, Laurence Hulse, proposed an investment in Transense Technologies. My initial reaction could best be described as having a Victor Meldrew moment. Those with stock market memories may recall that Transense has a history of failing to meet its ambitious plans and targets and repeatedly returned to investors to back its innovative sensor technology. In 2007, Transense had a market cap of £60m and forecast revenue of £300,000. Its exciting disruptive technology, Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW), was destined to achieve widespread adoption in the automotive industry. However, this didn't happen, and instead, Transense developed a well-earned reputation for serial stock market underachievement.   As Sir John Templeton said, the four most dangerous words in investing are, This Time It's Different. With these words in mind, on today's episode, I am joined by Laurence to hear how Executive Chairman Nigel Rogers and Managing Director Ryan Maughan have repositioned this failed AIM-listed, blue-sky growth stock of the early 2000s. It is a fascinating case study of how UK-listed microcap companies can become forgotten and ignored as recovery strategies are implemented and latent value is created. As Nigel mentions, the AIM market is far from perfect. Today, Transense has a market cap of just £15m and is only now beginning to exploit SAW's true potential in areas like motorsport, EVs, aerospace and robotics. Following an innovative licensing deal with tyre giant Bridgestone that has effectively underwritten the business's foreseeable future, Transense today is led by a combination of Nigel's experienced financial nouse and Ryan's proven engineering credentials and entrepreneurial instincts. In this episode, we learn how Transense Technologies has been right-sized and can face the future on a firm financial footing, giving it time to exploit opportunities in SAW and its tyre-measuring device business, Translogik.   Please enjoy our conversation with Nigel and Ryan of Transense Technologies and why this time, it's different.       Brought to you by Progressive Equity Research.

Richard talks about his visit to Wales & Borders with Nick Millington MBE, Route Director at Network Rail and finds out about lagoons, climate models and vegetation control. In particular Richard is amazed at the complex multi-agency approach to securing ecology licences and concludes, perhaps controversially, that it's time to let Network Rail self certify. After all, they can do it with safety critical matters so why not when it comes to clearing dying or dead Ash trees? Nigel and Richard then discuss Richard Beeching's famous report of the 1960s and in particular, the Government's proposals, announced four years ago, to reopen lines and stations closed by Beeching through the Restoring Your Railway fund. We ask whether it has achieved anything (and the conclusion is very little) but then Nigel really sets Richard's "Victor Meldrew" going by talking about the Borders Railway to Carlisle and the possible reopening of the Peak District line through Bakewell and Monsal Dale. Along the way Nigel & Richard discuss how to decide whether something is strategic (they have a different view), what Confirmation Bias means (and why it's an issue) and how on earth anything is going to happen when the cost for a new station at Devizes alone was looking like it could hit £65m!

Reflecting on our recent appearance at the Transport Select Committee, in this episode of Green Signals we are delighted to be joined by Andrew McNaughton. Not only did Andrew give evidence with us at the TSC recently, he was HS2's Technical Director and one of its first two employees back in 2009. There is no-one better to talk to in detail about why HS2 was designed the way it was (and, perhaps more importantly, why it wasn't designed differently)! Andrew brilliantly describes reasons for HS2's alignment, speed and capacity. But the really important discussion is that we all agree just how vital it is to fight for Phase 2A to go ahead, for a whole host of reasons that you really do need to hear. Without it, we have all kinds of problems ahead. We also explain in this episode what a White Paper is and what a select committee does. Aside from HS2, Richard has a bit of a Victor Meldrew moment while giving his views on the King's Speech. To say he was underwhelmed by the announcement of a Draft Bill for GBR is a bit of an understatement...

You may recall the BBC sitcom character Victor Meldrew and his frequent mantra, ‘I don't believe it!', which depicted his rather grumpy and cynical outlook on life in One Foot in the Grave. In the Christian world, belief has also been misunderstood. For many it represents fanciful ideas that we accept even though there's no logical reason to do so, even in the Church.

Richard Wilson is an actor and director who became a household name when he played the part of Victor Meldrew in the BBC sitcom One Foot in the Grave. Richard was born in Greenock in Scotland in 1936. As a child he performed in amateur drama productions and harboured a secret desire to become an actor. He left school at 17 and trained as a laboratory technician at Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow. Following National Service in Singapore, he moved to London and at the age of 27 successfully auditioned for a place at RADA. His first role was as a stonemason in Dr Finlay's Casebook and he later reached a wider audience playing snooty Jeremy Parsons QC in the television series Crown Court. Richard went on to carve out a successful theatre and television career as both an actor and director. He starred in the comedy Only When I Laugh and later in the series Tutti Frutti alongside Emma Thompson and Robbie Coltrane. In 1990 he delighted audiences with his portrayal of the grumpy pensioner Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave, with his catchphrase ‘I don't believe it!' – a phrase which has haunted Richard ever since. The series regularly attracted an audience of 17 million viewers and Richard won two BAFTAs for his performance. Richard received an award for his outstanding contribution to film and television at the Scottish BAFTAs in 2013. Presenter: Lauren Laverne Producer: Paula McGinley

Back again with another Christmas special. Some sources say this counts as series 2, others say the beginning of series 3. I am joined once again by super fan Ben, to talk through the bizarre goings on of Victor Meldrew, starring theme tune creator Eric Idle. Victor yet again attracts trouble, but not in the form of human contact. He is however at war with neighbour, Patrick. A hilarious mix-up involving Mr.Swainey, his grandmother's funeral and a pot of herbal tea causes yet more stress and disturbance into Victor's life. The genius of One Foot mixes hilarity and sadness, as we learn of a devastating conclusion to one of the One Foot regulars. Transcript: Day 95 Bonfire night   Thursday and now just a few days before everything un locks, the end of the Alarma and the new normal will start on Monday, many Spanish can go back to work and get the working week off to.. er, well er, a two day start, because next Wednesday “we are having a Fiesta”   The Fiesta of San Juan to be precise, the beginning of summer and those long summer holidays, after all we have all been working so hard these last few weeks … erm!   San Juan is when hordes of Spanish all head to the beach for a party, it will last all night and bonfires are lit all along the coast on the beach, there will be a lot of food and drink, all in throwaway plastic containers, barbecues and plenty of booze, that will also come in plastic containers and tin cans.   The idea is that the bonfires of San Juan are said to purify and protect, and ward of evil spirits, also at midnight, Spanish time, you go to the water’s edge and wash your face in the sea water to bring you good luck and hope for the future.   The following morning all along the beautiful coastline it looks like there has been an illegal rave, the devastation and litter is truly appalling.  The crowds must leave the beach by 10am that following day so that a massive council run cleaning operation can come along and mitigate the damage done to the eco system. By removing hundreds of tons of rubbish off the beaches.   They are often too late, and we have the pleasure of watching swathes of plastic litter pass by us on the sea. For two years running the locals decided, why bother bringing your own firewood to the beach when you can rip up the disabled wooden walkways for wheelchairs and set fire to them, at the expense of the local council and of course those who are disabled.   Ok, ok, I am painting a rather bleak picture here and there are some who bring their own bin bags and do clear up, but some don’t and as I have mentioned the Spanish do like a smoke, so hundreds and thousands of butt ends are discarded on the beach.  Every cigarette has a small ring of plastic at the filter end, so they also need to be cleared up off the beach too.   At least twice a year usually at the end of summer we have beach cleaning volunteers who go along the beaches collecting cigarette ends and other summer holiday detritus left by visitors and tourists.     This year, San Juan is cancelled, no bonfires, no plastic waste out at sea, no drunken behaviour ripping up disabled boardwalks, also no income for the bars and restaurants that stay open all night.   Covid19 measures mean instead of spending money on cleaning up the beaches, the council is spending money on policing the beaches and closing them ALL across the whole of Spain next Wednesday.   I have been to a San Juan festival and enjoyed the event, but there is a great deal of young drunken behaviour, a lot of drugs and booze, not the family event we were expecting so came away soon after midnight.   I think what has happened, well at least here, is that what should be a great family festival has been hijacked by a club 18 to 30 mob who just go wild and trash the place.  We have seen it happen so many times in the UK.   When we lived in Essex, we were very close to a rather attractive park with a museum, there were ornamental flower beds and lovely stretches of grass to enjoy a summers day on.   Except that summer picnics have turned into a competition to scatter as much plastic and other waste around and then leave it on the grass.  I know speaking like this makes me into a bit of a Victor Meldrew. I am not.   I like a good party, I like to let my hair down, if I had any, but I can’t bear to leave a mess behind, and I don’t understand why you would want to do that?   Thursday and the economic figures are starting to emerge all over Europe detailing the cost to the economies of Lockdown.  In Germany there was a 13% decline in economic activity, here in Spain a whopping 34% fall in output.   Spain is hit harder as it has a reliance on the services industry.  And almost 95% of Spanish businesses are small to medium enterprises, here where we live, they are often family run.   It was another of those big culture shocks to discover so few national chains of anything other than McDonalds or Burger King, I swear the first business on the moon will be one of those two.   The Spanish Government is expecting a drop in GDP of 9.2% this year, I personally think they are way out and GDP has fallen a lot more than that.   There is to be EU money made available to help Spain but some in the EU are worried that the left-wing Government will spend the money on ideological schemes rather than re-igniting the business sector.   The conservatives in Spain believe that the money should be spent on digitising Spain, making more of the administration online and easier to work, create jobs with re-industrialisation to provide what they describe as ‘real jobs’.   The good news is neither side want cuts or austerity. The bad news is as usual left and right are both at logger heads as to how the money should be spent.   One thing is for certain though, they are not alone, the whole world is sharing in the same challenges and that getting us out of lockdown will be a far more complicated process than putting us in.

To address this Gavan shares 8 great tips on how to seize, mostly for free, the opportunities that are available to build and be in the social media space. Listen in and start creating your social media presence.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Use these Ideas to boost activities on social media, because the world values and gives back to creators, not consumers. Why not ask your niece, grandson or child, to give you a tutorial? – it is intuitive for them and it's a great way to build a relationship and spend time together. If you don't know how to make your own content - use a site like ‘Fiver' to help you – you don't need to hire someone. You don't need to spend any money – ‘Canva' is free and is a great tool for creating marketing images on a social feed. If you don't have anyone to ask – get online and ask the question on YouTube Get some headshots you can use across different social media - Think about multiple poses and different backgrounds that you can use over several months. Instagram is considering the removal of ‘likes' – this means there are no excuses only you will know how many likes you have. Get on a training course – you can do online courses or 1 to 1 face to face. Find out what's available in your area. Who doesn't want to be the most important person in their group – if you open yourself up to this new world you will be opening yourself to lots of new friends.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I'm up to 2,000 Instagram followers and you can have this too' ‘It's much easier for an older person to stand out on social media because there are fewer of us out there' ‘Looking into a recent troll it was possible to see it was based on a fear of technology' ‘If I don't have anything positive to say I don't say anything'   VALUABLE RESOURCES  Speed Mentor Podcast Gavan Wall website     ABOUT THE HOST  Welcome to the Speed Mentor Podcast.  Do you want success and abundance in your life?!  Do you want to hear how to achieve it?  Then you've come to the right place where the world's only Speed Mentor, Gavan Wall will mainline you with micro bite-sized chunks of inspiration fused with knowledge, built into a daily routine to help you deliver success.  After walking away, a decade ago from his gilded life as a leading Barrister and property investor, Gavan Wall started his entrepreneurial career in inauspicious circumstances as he lost everything in the property crash.  But he refused to give up, re-building a financial fortress from scratch, until now he leads multiple successful multi-million £ companies across FMCG, Franchise, Tech, Property and Mentoring.  He's the Speed Mentor and serial entrepreneur, who shares with you all the breadcrumbs of success and just as importantly the failures. This week producer Claire went to see professor of value chain management Andrew Fearne at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Having heard him do a great talk at the Norfolk Farming Conference (NFC), she went to learn more about what a value chain is compared to a supply chain. Claire tried to find out what Professor Fearne would do if he was a Norfolk farmer growing the typical crops of this area - wheat, barley, sugar beet etc. and was interested by his answer of being more proactive and growing a highly tailored crop. At the NFC many people were talking about his speech afterwards and the apparent revelation that price was far more important that provenance. As Prof. Fearne explains, it's important not to see the consumer as an homogeneous mass and start targeting your crop to your market. ‘One Foot in the Grave’ character Victor Meldrew said: Well, that’s that over for another year. The joyous ritual of our annual pilgrimage to see great-aunt Joyce. Gets more like entering a mummy’s tomb every time we go there. … Still, these’ll be a real godsend, won’t they! A pair of gloves with six fingers in each hand. Trying to tell me I’d grow into them. What’s she going to knit for me next time, a balaclava with two heads? (Only a Story, #5.2, 1995) On another occasion, after complaining and moaning about being stuck in a traffic jam for a long time, be concludes: I wish I was dead! To which his wife in the car beside him replied: I wish you were dead. Then we might get some peace. (The Beast in the Cage, #3.4, 1992) No-one likes a grump-old-man, or a grump-old-woman, or a grumpy teenager or child for that matter. How can Christians avoid being grumpy? It’s simple, just be thankful! How can we be thankful when situations are not great? And why should we be thankful when circumstances do not naturally make us happy? Firstly, God commands that we be thankful: Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NLT) And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:20, NLT) That might be easy when the going is good. But what about when it is difficult? We are told that all things work together for the good of God’s people, even if we don’t know how (Romans 8:28). We can give thanks to God for how he will use every circumstance. We ought to be thankful. Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one was thankful (Luke 17:11-19). A courageous man once rescued seventeen people from a sinking ship in Lake Michigan. When asked years later what particularly stood out in his mind, he replied that not one person thanked him for saving them. Corrie ten Boom in The Hiding Place relates an incident that taught her always to be thankful. She and her sister, Betsy, had just been transferred to the worst German prison camp they had seen yet, Ravensbruck. On entering the barracks, they found them extremely overcrowded and flea-infested. That morning, their Scripture reading in 1 Thessalonians had reminded them to rejoice always, pray constantly, and give thanks in all circumstances. Betsy told Corrie to stop and thank the Lord for every detail of their new living quarters. Corrie at first flatly refused to give thanks for the fleas, but Betsy persisted, and Corrie finally succumbed to her pleadings. During the months spent at that camp, they were surprised to find how openly they could hold Bible study and prayer meetings without guard interference. It was not until several months later that they learned the reason the guards would not enter the barracks was because of the fleas. Even after personal tragedy, godly Job in the Old Testament was able to say, after losing his wealth, his house and his children: “I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The LORD gave me what I had, and the LORD has taken it away. Praise the name of the LORD!” (Job 1:21, NLT) Centuries later, a businessman who lost his livelihood in a fire, after which his four daughters drowned at sea, was able to write the hymn ‘It is will with my soul’ which as the chorus: “When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll—Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well with my soul.” Christians should also be thankful to God by giving to those in need. The Apostle Paul commended the believers at Corinth for their generousity gift of money to help the church at Jerusalem which was suffering famine: “This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:12, NIV-84) But also, Christians are blessed themselves when they thank God. Scientists have noted the benefits of being thankful, or having and attitude of gratitude: Stronger immune systems Less bothered by aches and pains Lower blood pressure Exercise more and take better care of their health Sleep longer and feel more refreshed upon waking It lessens worry It strengthens memory for older people Higher levels of positive emotions More alert, alive, and awake More joy and pleasure More optimism and happiness (reduces depression) More helpful, generous, and compassionate More forgiving More outgoing Feel less lonely and isolated isolated While people in general can be grateful, when they have much to be grateful for, although atheists aren’t grateful to God, the benefits of being grateful apply most when there is much to be depressed about, at face value. At such times, unbelievers don’t have much reason to be grateful. Yet, Christians can be grateful even during the most difficult of circumstances. They therefore benefit the most, when such benefit is needed. Being grateful to God helps our mental health, as well as our physical and and emotional health. We can become better at thanking God practically in different ways: Thank God by counting your blessings instead of your problems. Thank God by reviewing past blessings (keeping a personal spiritual journal is very helpful for this). Thank God for your relationship with him, if you have trusted in Jesus. Thank God for your glorious future, even if your present situation is difficult. Thank God that he is bringing more people to know him over time, that he is a saving God. Thank God that he is a good God. Start each day with a prayer of thanksgiving. Instead of moaning at something, like Victor Mildrew, find something to be thankful for. If you are blessed by others, focus on the giver rather than the gift – focus on them instead of how yourself and how you have benefited. Be grateful, and you will soon feel grateful and more joyful. But we must always remember that we can only expect God to hear our prayers (Isaiah 1:15-20), and answer our prayers (Matthew 7:7-11), if we have placed our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ beforehand (John 1:12), by which we are reconciled to God the Father (Romans 5:11), and have open access to him in prayer (Hebrews 4:16), and can thank him as we look forward to when there will be no more pain, suffering or sin (Revelation 21:1-4).
