As the Venga Boys once said, "We're going to Ibiza"... unfortunately the BritCom goes to the Movies budget didn't stretch as far as actually going to the Balearics, but via the magic of podcasting, we can transport you there by discussing Kevin and Perry Go Large. Ben Clark joins Guy and Rob for this episode. The writer, director, and comedian is also one-third of Pappys and had, up until this moment, never seen the movie. Luckily he's still talking to us! We talk about the origins of Kevin the teenager from Kevin the annoying little brother in Harry Enfield's Television Programme to Superstar DJ with sidekick Perry, played by the inimitable Kathy Burke. Kevin became the benchmark by which all millennial teenage boys were (rightly or wrongly) compared. But as big a cultural phenomenon as Kevin and Perry were (along with many other of Enfield and Burke's characters) how did that translate to the big screen? How kind has the last quarter of a century been to the movie and of course, its memorable soundtrack packed with dance anthems. Join Rob, Guy, and Ben to find out. Comedian Helen Lederer on evolving attitudes toward neurodiversity, how alternative comedy has developed since the 1980s, and how her definition of happiness changes with age.Helen and Gordon also get into social media and entertainers' relationships with reviews, working with great comedians like Harry Enfield, and why her candid new memoir Not That I'm Bitter proves “you can be funny about sad things”.
Gerard Hoffnung's life was short. He died in 1959 at the age of 34, but this cartoonist, musician, broadcaster and raconteur achieved a lot in that time. Born in Berlin, he lived most of his life in London. His charming cartoons which often gently poked fun at musicians and conductors were printed in magazines and books. His wife Annetta said he was always on-show and even a trip to the bank could turn into an uproarious occasion. Having caught the attention of the BBC he recorded a series of interviews with Charles Richardson, and his delivery of 'The Bricklayer's Lament' to the Oxford Union in 1958 is considered a triumph of comedic story-telling. The Hoffnung concerts which combined music and comedy sold out quicker than Liberace.Harry Enfield discovered Hoffnung when he was looking through the records in his local library. He knows it's boring for comedians to talk about timing but Hoffnung's was brilliant, and he finds it annoying that comedy wasn't even his main job. Harry got to know the family later on and his impersonation of Gerard became the inspiration for his own character 'Sir Henry'. Harry's joined in the studio by Gerard and Annetta's children, Emily and Benedict Hoffnung.Future episodes in this series include Alice Roberts on Emma, Queen of England, Journalist Steve Richards on Bruce Forsyth and Baronness Ros Altman on Antoni Gaudi.Presenter: Matthew Parris Producer: Toby Field for BBC Studios Audio

Richard Macduff is not himself Everything is connected! Before Netflix adapted Douglas Adams' beloved Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, there were two BBC Radio series featuring Harry Enfield as the oddball detective. Dirk Gently is a detective with a difference. Based on his belief in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things, he investigates mysterious circumstances through a holistic approach – if everything is connected then he might just ask you to buy him pizza so he can glean clues from that pizza through holistic techniques. Or maybe this just started as a scam to get free pizza – but his encounters with the bizarre and occult, and his outcomes speak for themselves

What does comedy have to do with cyber risk? More than you might think. My guest on this episode Ian Murphy specialises in both, using comedy to produce content that makes people more aware of cyber security risks.Ian is the founder of CyberOff, which in his words “breathes life into cyber security training”. He does that using incredibly compelling content that relies heavily on comedy.During our discussion, we explore how Ian went from being a semi-professional football player via the British Ministry of Defence and then onto CyberOff. On the way, he provides insights about growing up in Liverpool and some very frank views about what's wrong with way many organisations approach cyber risk. What Ian has to say is just as relevant to other contexts like ethics and compliance.
