IT Best Practices: Intel Manufacturing factories rely on advanced technology for smooth 24/7 operation. Each factory includes two data centers with hundreds of servers to manage materials, equipment automation, process control, inventory, analytics, and more. Manufacturing IT recently built a separate and completely virtual integration environment for Intel’s Non-volatile Memory Solution Group (NSG) factory. This offered an opportunity to introduce Intel Optane SSDs as cache tier on I/O-intensive workloads to reduce the number of disk groups required. Whether running applications, websites, databases, file servers, or other services, storage performance is often the most important factor in delivering high-performing business solutions. And higher disk throughput is key to achieving performance. We targeted web, application, and database servers using common factory workloads and the results were outstanding. Testing revealed that two disk groups performed as well as three and write-intensive workloads performed even better. We compared automation system use cases involving defect analysis application servers and database servers on a virtualized platform with Intel Optane storage media against systems with NAND SSD (All-Flash) systems. With nearly 200 physical servers hosted in the integration environment, the results gave us confidence to virtualize most factory integration compute environments with servers that simulate the factory setting before applying changes in production.

In this special Intel sponsored episode of SMACTalk, Co-Host Daniel Newman goes solo on the hosting duties and leads a show focused on what to expect from Intel at VMworld 2018, starting August 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Joining Daniel for the discussion was Jake Smith, Director of Data Center Technology at Intel Data Center Group, where he focuses on Xeon Scalable Processors and Optane Persistent Memory product lines and how those products can be integrated with technology like VMware. During the show, Jake shared that Intel first began working with VMware in 2002 with efforts to reduce latency via new tools and scalable usage models like ESX, MSX, and VMware Cloud. In that time, they’ve developed technology that has sped up the process of launching virtual machines (from buying, provisioning, and developing) from months to minutes to seconds, which will drive digital transformation moving forward. In the past, for instance, companies could launch new apps just every 90 days, which put a cramp in their ability to digitally transform. Now using virtualization, they can deploy apps simultaneously, allowing users to make the most of the technology being created. At Daniel’s request, Jake discussed Intel Optane in-depth, explaining the importance of persistent state memory (PMEM), which allows a virtual machine to keep running even if the power goes out with no need to reset. It reduces boot times and increases performance with scalable memory up to 3 terabytes per socket. Jake emphasized that Optane would allow a company to move an entire database into memory, putting it within 18 microseconds of the user. The difference is like using a cached history of data, rather than opening a new site.  Daniel and Jake discussed that technology like Intel’s Optane is what will allow AI and machine learning to do the work they’re meant to do because ultimately AI and machine learning are only as good as the machines that can manage the data. Using Optane, data can be trained fast enough for companies to use it in real time—be it an autonomous vehicle or facial recognition software.  Jake shared the example of picture recognition working not in 11 seconds but 1 second. The technology would work quickly enough that you could be offered a coupon to The Gap as soon as you walked into the mall. Optane helps provide the architecture that can deliver this level of intelligence—a nexgen virtualized database. For the non-techy listeners, Daniel emphasized that Optane is about creating more storage and more access to virtual machines – making it easier, faster, and more affordable for companies to use AI and machine learning technology. Jake also emphasized that Intel’s goal is always to create a better TCO (total cost of ownership) and lower transaction cost for its business users. What Intel will preview at VMworld: Intel Select Solutions; optimized hardware solutions – CPUs, chip set technologies filled with virtual technologies; hyper threading; VSAN non-volatile memory architecture; Optane data centers with persistent memory technology; hybrid cloud environment solutions; workload optimization for hybrid cloud environments. The goal is to reduce as much latency as possible in CPU, networking silicon, SSD silicon, and memory silicon. What Intel is working on outside of VMworld:  Accelerated FGAs; custom chips that accelerate V motion; and the concept of “enterprise reassurance.” Enterprise reassurance means building compatibility generation over generation so that businesses know that investments in tech will carry over year to year. Lumina Media Player is a graphic interface for the Qt QMediaPlayer Class, with Pandora internet radio streaming integration. Lumina Media Player supports many audio formats, including .ogg, .mp3, .mp4, .flac, and .wmv. It is also possible to increase the number of playable formats by installing gstreamer-plugins. This utility is found in the Applications → Utilities section, or opened by typing lumina-mediaplayer in a command line. New Utility: lumina-xdg-entry. This is another simple utility designed to help users create .desktop entries and shortcuts. Find it in the Utilities application category, or open it by typing lumina-xdg-entry in a command line. Lumina Desktop: Desktop folders are integrated, and can now be manipulated directly from the desktop. Added the automatic settings migration of a desktop monitor (single monitor only, for now). Numerous speed and performance improvements with how icons load and the system interacts with the desktop. Lumina-FM: Now fully integrated with lumina-archiver. A “System directory” tree pane is available. Options to enable/disable it are being added later, as it is on by default. Numerous speed improvements with caching and loading icons. It's the latest thing! (Except that 11-STABLE is in the middle of the pack of what's supported .. but the KDE bits are fresh. I run 10.3 with KDE4 or Plasma 5 on my physical machines, myself, so the FreeBSD version isn't that important except that packages are readily available for 11-STABLE, not for 10-STABLE.) We skip the part about installing FreeBSD (it's in there if you need it) and get right to the important parts that you need: An X Server and a backup X11 environment (ancient): pkg install xorg xterm twm Desktop technologies (modern): pkg install hal dbus echo haldenable=YES >> /etc/rc.conf echo dbusenable=YES >> /etc/rc.conf Next up, test whether the X server works by running startx and exiting out of twm. This week we spoke with two key members of the vSAN ReadyLabs team, Sr Product Manager Biswa Bhattacharjee and Engineering Director for vSAN, Kathryn Vandiver. [0:29] Salut à tous et bienvenue dans la chronique des composant la 30, 4e édition de la chronique des composants je suis Guillot Vendée nous enregistrons le jeudi 15 juin 2017 et comme pour tout bonne chronique des composants qui se respecte je suis bien entendu accompagné de l' incontournable Guillaume, objet spalla Salut Guillaume comment vas-tu très très bien si jamais vous entendez des petits blancs dans c'est parce qu'on a des, les petites coupures probablement de mon fait ou plus probablement de du fait de ma connexion donc ne nous en voulez pas tu sais que j'ai reçu des sollicitations régulière pour me dire alors la chronique des composants il y en a plus, et bien si il y en a toujours mais j'avoue que j'ai énormément de mal à dimensionner Du, étant déjà porté café dans dans ma petite vie en ce moment mais bien entendu il est absolument pas question que ça s'arrête et Guillaume était toujours présent, pour avoir tout a suivi la même des des projets secrets et on vous en reparlera en temps et en heure autour de la chronique des composants, pour l'heure il est temps de faire la CB News la la rubrique des actualités de la chronique des composants qu'est-ce qui s'est passé dans le monde merveilleux des composants ces dernières semaines, ben ouais c'est plutôt ces dernières semaines un petit mot déjà d'un acteur donc on entend pas forcément parler dans l'univers des de la chronique des composants justement et de la microélectronique c c quoi on t'a l'heure pourquoi on va parler de compte ce soir Guillaume, oui c'est vrai que les news certaines yeux sur un petit peu moins news a du fait c'est vrai qu'elle a un petit peu de mal à dégager du temps des fois. [2:05] La dernière antenne externe donc on va dire que on voit la vie de parler de compte parce que quand vous l'utilisez peut-être pas d'envoyer l'essayer c'est un acteur petit un petit moteur de recherche envisage de concurrencer les grands, et qui m'envoie pas mauvais du tout je sais pas si tu l'as essayé moi je l'ai essayé je suis souvent déçu et en tout cas je perds mes marques, par rapport aux résultats que je peux avoir chercher google mais il faut reconnaître que pour quelqu'un qui est pas forcément je sais pas si ça existe d'ailleurs les power-user de la recherche au contraire lennon pouvoir de la recherche que ça peut convenir à une immense majorité des besoins de, beaucoup de monde sur le moteur de recherche éclair oui oui effectivement, mais bon comme tout petit Espira devenir grand il faut faire un petit peu comme les grands et du coup,

Zum Glück ist er mit dem Code nicht zu Adobe gegangen, sondern hat einen c't-Artikel dazu geschrieben. Mit uns diskutiert er darüber, wie man jetzt schon Bilder mit KI verbessern kann, und was in Zukunft noch alles auf uns zukommt. Zum Schluss erklärt uns Speicher-Experte Lutz Labs, was es mit dem designierten Flash-Nachfolger 3D XPoint und Intel Optane auf sich hat. They outlined how 3D XPoint technology is an entirely new class of nonvolatile memory that will revolutionize storage enabling high-speed, high-capacity data storage close to the processor. This technology will be made available as SSDs (solid state drives) called Intel Optane technology, as well as in a DIMM (dual in-line memory module) form factor which will open up new possibilities of types of workloads and applications that you can accelerate or take to whole new levels of big memory applications. Greg emphasizes that Intel will be making Optane SSDs available for servers, enthusiast clients, and laptops within 2016.
