AP's Lisa Dwyer reports there's more bad weather in store for California.
You are living in a generation that is addicted to the screen. Now, we all are. So it's not just you, but this generation is addicted to the screen. Just go to any restaurant and you'll see this proven out, right? Table after table, they're all sitting there, even families, and they're on the screens. That's a problem. This is the distracted generation. The average young person is unable to stay away from the screen for more than five minutes at a time, according to a study. Another study revealed that the average teen receives over 200 notifications every day. 200. You are inundated. You are being submerged with data. Waterlogged. So I ask you again, what is the answer to a waterlogged life? I will say it again. It's revival. The answer is you need. You need God's fire. You need God's power. You need God Himself. I was inspired by all of my live dance music players from college and season 2 of Daredevil to help the audience experience what our hero goes through. This piece was a giant collaboration from my stunts class. Monica, Rayla and Tennyson did most of the heavy lifting in terms of choreography and costume design. But they asked me to help stunt coordinate and direct and help write the script since the action was developed without any specific dialogue at all. Waterlogged fields, wet crops, delays and lower yields - the reality of harvest 2024 for many UK farmers. It's been a really difficult year. This winter, rainfall was 60% above average in England, and that came after the wettest 18 months since records began in the 1830's. That hit the sowing of both winter and spring crops. The summer has been the coolest since 2015 - according to the Met Office - which has meant a delayed harvest and extra costs to dry the crop.We visit a new fish freezing centre that's been opened in Redruth by the company Falfish. It hopes the site will enable it to grow its business and support local sardine fishermen. And we hear from the new Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee - the group of MPs which scrutinises environment and agriculture policy. Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael, who has represented Orkney and Shetland for 23 years, says the committee's To Do list is "substantial".Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced by Heather Simons

In between the rain, farmers have planted crops many of which are now battling for growth in saturated ground. Waterlogged soil is a poor growing medium, and it also means farmers can't bring machinery onto their land to give the plants fertilisers or pesticides to help them grow. Some are now turning to drones to deliver preparations instead, so at least the soil is not disturbed. But, if the ground is still draining, does that mean more danger of pollution from nutrient rich water running off the fields?A new project's been launched by farmers and scientists, to uncover special traits found in heritage wheats, which could boost productivity in modern commercial varieties. Scientists at the John Innes Centre have been working with the Watkins Collection of heritage wheats gathered in the 1930s from 32 countries. Unlike modern wheat, some of these ancient varieties can interact with bacteria in the soil to allow them access to more nutrients. And, it's lambing time - we visit a smallholding in North Yorkshire where all the ewes are pregnant with either triplets or quads!Presented by Anna Hill Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons

With much of the West gripped by an epic drought, you might wonder if any amount of additional water is too much for California, the nation's leading agricultural producer. When 32 trillion gallons of water fell during three weeks of a soggy winter, it's a good question to consider. The massive influx of rain and snowfall is largely a positive for California, including farmers, who benefit from replenished underground aquifers, a major influx of water in storage and reduced soil salinity.Challenges from that much water all at once include thousands of acres of flooded strawberry fields, and the potential that overly wet conditions may negatively impact upcoming almond pollination. Bees do not like to gather pollen if it's too cold or wet.“In certain regions, there's going to inevitably be flooding, due to the substantial snowpack,” remarked Justin Rose, Redox Bio-Nutrients Agronomist working with growers in the San Joaquin Valley. “For some of these early guys who'll be getting in for bloom time, for sprays in almonds and some fruit trees, saturated soils will prevent them from entering, so they'll either have to go by air, or they won't spray any bloom sprays at all.”Rose said Supreme is one of the products that provides big benefits during this time in the season. It's a full nutrient package with a fermentation process that helps retain and size nuts.Along the coast, Redox Bio-Nutrients Agronomist Kort Holzwart is working to help strawberry growers get the most from their fields, especially with key sales periods like Mother's Day around the corner.“Early on, it's most important to have the field drained,” he said. “As we move forward into the season, I would recommend products to help stimulate plant and root growth. H-85 is going to be a phenomenal product, to stimulate microbial activity. Also, RootRx is a winning root stimulant option for some of these growers.”

The Turkey Hunter Podcast with Andy Gagliano | Turkey Hunting Tips, Strategies, and Stories
A Waterlogged Turkey Cameron shares another turkey hunt with us this week to get us primed and ready to eat some Thanksgiving turkey. This hunt took place in what is a very common habitat for many of us hunters east of the Mississippi River. This was in a hardwood bottom that, at the time, was flooded. Cameron found some gobbling turkeys in the area. After sloshing through the water to get to them, he setup, called, and soon had his hat blown off by a loud gobbling Eastern wild turkey. The gobbling in this hunt will get your blood boiling and get you wishing for springtime again. Listen in!

It's Friday and we're wrapping up this week's news talking about an unanticipated challenge with waterlogged EVs. We're also talking about why Amazon is pulling the plug on its autonomous delivery robot program, as well as what we should be looking for in today's jobs report. Waterlogged EVs are beginning to ‘explode' according to Florida's Chief Fire Marshal"There's a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start," Patronis tweeted Thursday. "That's a new challenge that our firefighters haven't faced before. At least on this kind of scale."Crews are using hundreds of gallons of water attempting to put these fires outAt NAMAD, Mark Bland of S&P Global mentioned that only 50% of fire stations nationwide are equipped with the training and resources to fight these EV firesAmazon has pulled the plug on its ‘Scout' autonomous delivery robot program after three years citing the program was not meeting customer expectationsCooler sized robots on 6 wheels would carry packages directly to consumers homes and open its side hatch to allow the packages to be receivedThe program was about 3 years old and began autonomous deliveries in sidewalks communities in Seattle before expanding the program to Southern CaliforniaAbout 400 amazon employees were assigned to the project and will be offered jobs in other areas of the companyThis is a sign that CEO Andy Jassey is reprioritizing funds as sales growth begins to slow from record levelsGood news could be bad news when it comes to the job report releasing todayDuring his talk at NAMAD, Jonathan Smoke, Chief Economist at Cox Automotive, mentioned that historically low unemployment reports would continue to push the fed to raise interest rates at their aggressive pace.Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expect the report, due out Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET, will show that payrolls increased 275,000 in September, while the unemployment rate held at 3.7%. At least as important, estimates are for average hourly earnings to increase 0.3% month over month and 5.1% from a year ago.One major concern is that both job growth and wage growth are outpacing inflation, leading to supply side recession. The hope is that if jobless claims rise, less aggressive spending would hit the market.“I don't think the Fed is going to pivot or pause or anything of that nature before the end of the year, certainly not because of jobs data,” said Shannon Saccocia, Chief Investment Officer at SVB Private Bank.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-emailASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
