Ted speaks with Chris Bouchard at BPWood in Penticton, British Columbia.  BPwood is a family run lumber company that specializes in being Nimble Innovators. Today Ted unravels the greenwashing of composite materials vs. new wood products. While most consumers and builders are looking for durable outdoor materials like red cedar, BPWood has been revolutionizing the global lumber supply chain by introducing a new product called ThermoWood. This thermally modified wood is more sustainable and cheaper than other alternatives and today you'll hear where it comes from, how it's made, and all the different ways it can be used to change the industry.TOPICS DISCUSSED[2:12] How extreme sports translates to the family business[6:28] Why did you join the family business?[9:00] What's the difference between regional woods?[10:45] Hardwood vs. softwoods and sustainability[14:45] Thermally Modified Wood: what is it and how is it made?[18:50] Reclaimed lumber and its durability[21:20] What's your biggest challenge? Europeans don't grow, they don't have Western Red Cedar. Western Red Cedar is naturally known as the most naturally resistant or durable wood for exterior cladding and fencing and railing and decking and things like that. So the Europeans had to come up with a solution to take the material that they can grow in their forests and make durable wood products.I think the vision for the company is to get a little bit deeper into markets that we've historically done good business in. We built the company on being a very wide company, and that's got us a long way. We understand the world. We know how things move around the world. We have a very global understanding of softwood. And my focus for the company is to see us dig a little deeper into those individual lanes. And just increase business that way. I believe you can only be so good at a lot of things and you can become masters at a few things that will make you stickier in the marketplace. The broader message for all of these home building groups is that wood is good. Wood has a better carbon footprint and a more sustainable story than any hardy board ever created, than any composite deck ever created. We need to reintroduce wood as being good. That's my message to the whole industry, not just the high end home guys.

We've got DIY tips on how to clear the jam safely and get it running again.  Plus, answers to your home improvement questions. Repairing Stone and Brick: Mindy has multiple areas in her porch, steps, and brick that need repair. We have recommendations on what to use to restore the surfaces. Wood Siding: Can faded Western Red Cedar siding be restored or should it be replaced with pine siding? Mike will need to use solid stain either way, but unless it's deteriorated, keeping the cedar siding is the more durable option. Tile Grout: The grout around the ceramic tiles looks dull and chalky. We give Joyce DIY tips on how to easily carve out the top layer of the old grout, then apply and seal new grout in its place. Weather Stripping: Jim is trying to get his doors to fit more tightly against the weather stripping. The easiest solution may be to adjust the lock strike plate to press the door in more firmly. Drainage Systems: The builder of Jill's new home recommends installing a double set of drainage systems, but is it overkill? We agree it's the right thing to do, and offer tips on grading, downspouts, and gutters. Painting: What is the proper order to paint the walls and baseboards in a room? Using masking tape to protect the edges, Jake should paint the trim first and then the walls. Insulation: Why is it always hotter or colder upstairs than in the rest of the house? Linda should add some blown-in insulation and cover her whole house fan in winter. Crawl Space: Why should you install a plastic vapor barrier and close the vents in a basement crawl space? Floyd learns how they help in preventing basement moisture.   Do you have a home improvement or decor question? Call the show 24/7 at 888-MONEY-PIT (888-666-3974) or post your question here. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - According to BC Parks, Campbell River is home to “the only significant stand of old-growth Douglas Fir north of Macmillan Provincial Park [Cathedral Grove].” Yet the city seems to be virtually oblivious to the “towering old growth Douglas Fir and Cedar trees” in the 3.5 kilometre Riverside and Old Growth Loop trails. While only minutes from downtown, the Riverside and Old Growth Loop Trails are not listed in the ‘Top 10 things to do within one hour of Campbell River.' A single sentence is devoted to the forest giants in the Best Trails in Elk Falls Provincial Park: “The old-growth forests in the area are comprised of giant Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir trees, with many in excess of 60 meters [197 feet] tall and hundreds of years old.” They scattered throughout this section of the forest. Elk Falls Provincial Park was created in 1940, ‘to protect rare old growth forests and related ecosystems, as well as the Elk Falls waterfall and the related canyon.' A large number of the trees along the Riverside and Old Growth Loop Trails are more than 330 years old. Many appear to be much older. There are five trails in Elk Falls Provincial Park: A 0.4 km path takes visitors from the park entrance to the Millennium trail. The Millennium Trail, connecting the Canyon View Trail (and John Hart Generating Station) to the network of trails around Elk Falls. A 0.2 km path to Elk Falls. The Riverside Loop Trail runs along the bank of the Campbell River. Visitors pass through large stands of old growth, as they pass Elk Falls, Deer Falls, the Dolphin Pool and Moose Falls. The Old Growth Loop Trail takes you through even thicker concentrations of old growth All of these paths are easy walking, but the Canyon View and Elk Falls Trails have extensive stairways. There are some old growth trees in both the Canyon View and Millennial Trails, but they are not as numerous or as large as those above the falls. Walking amidst these giants, one can imagine what the West Coast forests looked like before the age of industrialized logging.

It’s located at the Camp Casey Conference Center in beautiful Coupeville Washington.  Next year’s event, titled “Botanicals at the Beach” will be from August 23 – 26 2018. For more information you can head to NWHerbSymposium.com. Also, you can purchase recordings from last year’s event, as well as many other events from the symposium’s organizer’s website: www.treefarmtapes.com This was recorded at the 2017 NorthWest Herb Symposium. It’s with none other than herbalist Natasha Clarke. CLASS DESCRIPTION: Tree medicine is an oft overlooked resource here in the Pacific Northwest but it was only 60 years ago that harvesting bark from the Cascara trees was a job that folks still remember doing to make some extra money. From the mighty Western Red Cedar and Black Cottonwood to the “weedy’ Red Alder, Cascara and the lesser known Dogwood and Madrona, the trees in this bio region offer a pillar of support for many ailments. As a practicing herbalist focused on using local herbs, tree medicine compromises about 40% of the medicine I use.    Of the trees that lend their medicine well on this land are Western Red Cedar, Red Alder, Black Cottonwood, Pacific Northwest Dogwood, Cascara, Hawthorn and Willow, and Wild Cherry to name just a few.    Trees have a long physical history with man and an even longer relationship. We have been bough in arms with these silent sentient beings and I find that the medicine is rooted in this relationship. It leads to a reaching down and anchoring of ourselves in land, an understanding of where we are to grow from on our healing paths with this land that is our home, whether we are new to place or here all our lives.    The tree’s that I will be discussing are all trees that I use regularly in my practice and we will be talking about their medicine while we make the medicine.    Natasha Clarke is a practicing herbalist on Camano Island, WA. She is an herbal educator and creator of the Herb Hunter on KSER. To find out more go to: www.InnerEarthHealing.com
