In this episode, Alex Quin interviews Keven Pimentel and Michelle Chia on what the future holds for marketing CBD brands in 2023. With a vast knowledge of content marketing, SEO and social media, Keven and Michelle will discuss the various strategies involved in building successful CBD brands as well as trends that are likely to emerge in the future. Tune in to find out what they have to say!Wisdom Nuggets: SEO takes time to reflect. You investing in SEO now does not mean you will instantly start seeing results. If anything, you'll start getting results in a few months or a year, depending on the agency you work with. It is also essential that you look into the agency that you work with to see that the blogs that you upload have the right keywords that you're targeting and have awesome graphics. It also has to be content that you pre-created and curated. So, it's not just a matter of creating good quality block content in written form, but photos and videos contents are also important for your business growth.Keven identified the two layers of SEO, which are the content and technical side. The technical side here is how to communicate with the algorithms of Google, website speed, broken links, website structure, headers, etc. They advised that you hire an expert if you aren't the expert already. Niche yourself. Do not try to sell to everyone. Think about an audience. Pick an audience that you're comfortable with or an audience that's worth really diving into. Speak to them, create for them, talk to them, nurture them, love them, support them and make a brand that's so undeniably relevant to their life and lifestyle that you are the go-to option, and you own that part of the market. Podcast Outline:Alex: (00:40) All right, so we're back. I think it's been what, like a year since we did this? At the beginning of last year, we did a podcast episode. Right? Michelle's not scared of podcasts anymore, so when we ask her to be on a podcast, she's ready. Alex: (1:28) By the way, this is Hustle Inspires Hustle. Kevin Pimentel, Michelle Chiia. Kevin Pimentel is the founder of kamasa Marketing Agency. Michelle is the global marketing director at UADV and is the marketing powerhouse behind pretty much every single one of my brands.Keven: (1:47) All right. So yeah, with that background, so I do have the agency outside of that, I've actually dabbled in actually developing within the CBD space itself. I mean, I learned a, a lot extraordinary amount of information from that experience alone. And then also the brands that even like we've even started working on together which, you know, we can talk about later on. Keven: (2:23) CBD basically also equals cannabis a k a marijuana. But there is a difference in distinction between the types of plants, which we can get into later on. But the idea here is anything associated to that, it's a hot zone. Alex: (2:47) Yeah. When it comes to like c b marketing, you're kind of marketing with one and a half pants tied behind your back. So yeah, you're kinda like a chef in the kitchen and you have to cook this whole recipe, but you only got like 20% of, of the ingredients. And what I mean by that is obviously there's a lot of regulation, right?Alex: (03:03) When starting your CBD business, it's not just marketing, but also like the payment processing part is a little bit complex. Not every payment processor is gonna accept you cuz you're considered high risk. Not every bank's gonna accept you. So there is a process for that, a process that you're really helpful with on one of our most recent projects. So let's dive right in. Right? Let's dive into what are the elements of advertising CBD online. Alex: (03:26) First and foremost, we have SEO, we have influencer marketing, we have content marketing, affiliate marketing, email marketing. And then we'll also talk a little bit about hemp versus CBD. There's a few other marketing channels that we could probably talk about. We'll go one by one. SEO, let's talk about SEO. This is where Michelle jumps in. Michelle: (3:56) I mean, yeah. So SEO, if many of you don't know; it basically stands for a search engine optimization. What it basically means is whenever you go on Google and you search something like Nike Red Shoes and a blog or a pro product page comes up, the reason it comes up is because of SEO. Michelle: (4:36) And also that you have to also really look into the agency that you work with to see that they're not just uploading blogs willy-nilly into your website. So make sure making sure that the blogs that you upload have the right keywords that you're targeting have awesome graphics. Alex: (5:14) s it easy for me to digest from the headlines to the graphics? A lot of people in blogs, they just wanna put an image to kind of just fill in between the words and miss the whole point of being able to use infographics sometimes to get the point across. A lot of people search for a keyword, let's say, what are the benefits of CBD or a full spectrum CBD oil, for example. Michelle: (05:52) CBD is such a new and up, not new, but like somewhat new up and coming product that's like almost trending now to people like always using it for their pets to sleep for pain anxiety. And since it's such a new and unknown, I guess, type of um, territory, people are always gonna be looking into educational stuff. Alex: (6:26) Especially people that could be a little bit confused because they don't know, the, I guess they're, there's a blurred line between CBD, and cannabis. Will CBD get me high? We'll see, can I take CBD with this supplement or with this medicine? Can I take CBD while pregnant? Can I, there's so many different topics that you could talk about. A great tool that we like to use here is Answer the Public is a tool Keven's always talking about. That's a great tool to be able to draw data from.Alex: (7:09) So yeah, Uber suggests answer the public Sam Rush hfs. Yep. All of these are great tools to be able to market. Now SEO is complex. A lot of people decide to outsource it to an agency. Others wanna learn it in-house. There isn't a right or wrong answer there, right? There's a lot of great courses. One great course we always recommend is Ryan Stewart's SEO blueprint, right? Alex: (08:05) Why do we talk about SEO first? Well, if we didn't have advertising limitations in the CBD industry or even in the cannabis industry, we would just say, Hey, just click on some TikTok ads, click on some Facebook, Instagram, or even YouTube and Google ads and just drive traffic, measure that traffic and see what's working, what's not working. That's what we were referring to at the beginning. We got hands tied behind our back. We gotta do the best we can with what we have. Michelle: (08:28) And there is a way to defeat like kind of like find loopholes and defeat the system for ads. Like we've seen ads ourselves at like, say like, oh, like where they blur out the word cannabis and like stuff like that. So there is a way, but that's I guess a different episode. Alex: (08:53) So what we're gonna talk to, to you guys about here today is like solid ways you guys could advertise if you're looking to start a CBD brand or already have a CBD brand to be specific My bad. Yeah. To market a CBD brand. Um, alright, so we talked about SEO a little bit. I mean, we're not gonna dive super deep into what SEO is. Keven: (09:30) You know, I'll just make one comment real quick, just so, so that this one details is understood. One thing that Alex mentioned about either insourcing or outsourcing seo, the most important question you need to ask yourself is how much do you really know about seo? Keven: (10:02) That's something I would much rather, even in an agency that has to handle that will still work with someone who just does that part because it's so minuscule in terms of the details that you can miss that is meant to kind of communicate with the algorithms of Google and anything that's that your website is existing online. Yeah. So make sure that that's something you really understand.Alex: (10:20) Like website speed. Yes. What else? Like broken links, website structure, headers, everything has to be right. Or, or also when Google crawls it, you're not, it is not gonna get that data correctly and then spit it back into the, into the search engine results.Keven: (10:33) And one thing is, there's value in SEO because of what they said of it being a marathon because that value continues to compound. And even in the future, if nothing else was done, that value keeps building for free. And so in the future you will have people clicking onto your website for free that are searching for things that you posted about way in the past and it builds value. So when you ask yourself why is SEO expensive or why can SEO be such a large part of the budget of a marketing plan, or agency, it's extremely important to understand the minutiae that goes into this and the value it brings to you as a business.Keven: (11:33) So just remember that value as a client or as a business that's considering this higher experts if you aren't the expert already.Alex: (11:49) Another thing to keep an eye on, and we're talking about this on the car on the way here, if you're an SEO or considering seo, keep an eye on chat GBt cuz I believe Chad GBt's completely gonna change the way that SEO works. Alex: (12:41) Now influencer marketing, okay, you can't run ads for CBD yet on certain platforms maybe in the future. So you do seo if you already have SEO locked in or decide, hey SEO's not for me right now, maybe that's the last thing I'm gonna do. Influencer marketing is another one, right? So let's talk a little bit about that.Micelle: (12:56) I think, I think influencer marketing, sometimes people have like a negative view towards it. They're like, oh, like social media influencers, you know? But ultimately influencers can be taken in a way that it's people who love and support your brand without any compensation in a way.Alex: (13:18) You could go down the route of people that are just generally like support the brand. Like ambassadors. You always have to, like, as a disclaimer from a legal standpoint, whether you're paying somebody to advertise your product or you're sending it to them for free, you have to disclose the relationship. Michelle: (14:53) I mean yeah, cuz the benefit and like the reason why influencer marketing and affiliate marketing and all of referral marketing works so well is because people have fomo and like people always don't wanna miss out on like, what's the next best product.Michelle: (15:12) if Michael Jordan comes out and is like, oh, this sore muscle pain relief cream is the best one on the market, you best believe everyone on the and the basketball industry is gonna buy that. Yeah. So that's essentially what influencer marketing is and wow. How powerful it can work. Alex: (16:30) And it doesn't just have to be influencers. Um, you know, there's many ways of doing affiliate marketing through blogs through in, in, in some cases like YouTube channels, magazines. That's a really great way of doing it because you have no limitation there. You're not gonna get your ads blocked the way you would if you try to launch a campaign on Facebook and like advertise CBD. Keven: (19:02) So the biggest thing that happens a lot of times is companies just assume influencer means someone has a lot of followers, and you just pay 'em money. And because they're famous, people buy your product. In some categories, that could happen. I guess it really depends on the product, but ultimately focus on who's actually relevant to your customer.Alex: (21:02) While we're on the topic of influencer marketing, I want to give one of our friends, Olivia Ormo a shout out because Olivia just launched a project called Maven. That's right. Olivia is also a marketing agency owner out here in Miami. Very well respected and she's always also worked for the influencers. Olivia has married those two worlds, which is brands looking for influencers and influencers looking for brands into an app. Alex: (22:13) Okay, now moving on from SEO and influencer marketing, let's talk about content marketing, which is falls into both of those things that we just talked about, but very important to create content, photo content, video content, written content, user-generated content, people using your, your products for YouTube, shorts, talks, reels on your website, on your blog. Michelle: (23:17) Yeah, I think product content is also really important. I mean, like the number one page but besides the homepage is the product page for, especially for, like your CBD brand. People like should really invest into having really nice high-quality product photos, whether it be like on a white background or whatever color, brand color background you have. You could literally send, there's companies that you can send your products to and you pay them a small fee, and they will shoot the content for you and send it back to you. Alex: (24:38) And a lot of the times, all you need to is to do is showcase motion of something. And you could do that in a very, very quick and efficient way with very little space taken up with a gif. You guys could find great examples of that on curlymermaidhair.com, which is one of Kevin's companies.Keven: (25:04) I would say consider the fact that everyone right now is constantly engaging in content. Think TikTok and Instagram reels, right? If that's the most of their life outside of what they interacted on a physical basis, is something that's either entertaining them, informing them, but it's moving. Michelle: (26:17) Even even Instagram and YouTube are now pushing more short-form content like YouTube shorts and Instagram reels. They, they're like, please post more videos.Keven: (26:35) Because I know the performance marketers that are listening, so there's gonna be like, wait, I have a lot of winning ads with static images. We're talking about organic.Alex: (27:08) So, and so we're on a podcast right now. There's health and wellness podcasts, there's different podcasts where you could place CBD ads on. You could do giveaways on the podcast. And that's a really, really great way to get people to engage. And if you actually send the products out and people actually try the products out, it becomes a real thing. Alex: (27:35) Before we move on to the next one, let's talk about how it could potentially be done. Because if somebody's like, all right, podcast, how would I do it? Well, there, there's a few ways that you could do this. You could compile a list on Apple Music, on Spotify, or on any other platform.Alex: (28:35) Email marketing is a great tool. I hate hearing people that don't want to use it or neglect it. Email marketing works great for many reasons. One, if somebody opts into an email marketing list, it's because they're actually interested. They want to know, they're choosing to be part of that communication. Alex: (29:04) Second reason why email marketing works and many other industries as well is because of the data. Okay? You could upload that data to other platforms, find lookalike audiences or you know, you guys know, know the deal on how that works. So email marketing is a great tool.Michelle: (29:33) I mean in regards to email marketing, I think your, the most important part, so your email marketing actually works, is for you to have a good lead magnet. If your email marketing doesn't work, it's most likely because your lead magnet is and lead magnet meaning like the reason people are gonna sign up for your newsletter. Michelle: (29:53) So if it's for a CBD brand, you could have a popup or any type of other type of thing that's like, oh, sign up now and get 15% off. Or you can be even more creative and you can be like, sign up now and get a free sample.Kelven: (30:39) Yeah. I think the only thing I can honestly say that I've seen specifically work on email campaigns that we ran on, on with my agency was subject line and the top header of the email. And what I mean by that is a subject line that worked the best was an a subject line that began describing an experience or was something that was already like leading you into something.Keven: (31:23) Most of the time people are already reactively in a no mode when they're in emails cuz they're, they're tired of seeing emails, right? Yeah. So they're already like, no, no, I don't want it, I don't want it, I don't care. But if it's like, are you ready to experience being on an island on Friday? You know, something random like that that you're like, huh, you know what I mean? Keven: (32:31) the point is the better quality, the e looking, the emails look design-wise, the more per people take it even more seriously cuz they're like, wow, okay, this looks different.Alex: (33:15) And then when you collect that email on the website or wherever it is that you collect the email, that email should then trigger a nurture or welcome sequence, however you call it, which is a series of emails laid out over a series of days or weeks. Introducing the person to your brand and not asking for things. Keven: (33:30) A good rule, I've heard many times marketing is for every three pieces of value you bring, you could ask for something, right? Teach them, give them, introduce them, give them a peek behind the curtain, be of value and then have a type of pitch, right?Michelle: (33:46) Speaking of sequence, we can't forget about abandoned cart sequences also, which is like probably one of the most successful email marketing strategies that we have. Michelle: (34:53) Don't just have like 10,000 emails. Like great, you have 10,000 but only you're only getting a hundred opens. Like yes. Like clean it out. Like if someone hasn't opened your email in three months, there's a very high chance they're not gonna open it tomorrow. Alex: (35:08) A lot of people are like, oh, but I don't wanna my list to get smaller. I don't wanna like shrink the list. Shrink a list. Okay. For many reasons, for many reasons. For spam filters, for many other reasons.Kelven: (35:18) Shrink and segment. Shrink and segment meaning create different lists for different audiences of customers that you have. So if you know, for example, certain details about your customers, like for example, if you for whatever reason know between, I mean interests, ages or age.Alex: (36:15) Let's talk about hemp. Okay. Hemp is kind of like that route a lot of people take when they don't want to be tied to only being able to advertise the things that we just mentioned. They wanna run paid ads, what we call in digital marketing, performance marketing, Google ads, Facebook ads, Instagram ads.Alex: (36:39) A thing that people have been doing for quite some time now in CBD space is they just create an alternative of that product, but in with hemp, hemp the right product. And that's allowed on Amazon, that's allowed on Facebook, Instagram, pretty much all the platforms, right? Like topicals. Alex: (36:56) Now when we're talking about CBD here, it's good to keep in mind that there's different ways that CBD B is sold. CBD sometimes is sold as vape cartridges as flour. That's smokable. Sometimes it's tinctures. Gummies.. Okay. For the most part, what we've talked about here covers all of that. But do keep in mind that if you are doing, um, if you are doing hemp products, most of the time they're gonna be topicals. Yeah. Right? Like roll-ons and creams and things like that. You'll see a ton of them on Amazon. Michelle: (37:27) I believe Amazon, if I'm not mistaken, only accepts topicals, right?Alex: (37:40) And again, guys, just to, to be extremely clear with you, we are not the buck doesn't stop with us when it comes to CBD marketing. Okay? We've marketed for CBD brands successfully. We have our own; the three of us have our own CBD brand. Alex: (38:01) But we're open to suggestions. There's maybe new strategies that we're not using. Please let us know if there's anything we're missing out on, please let us know. We're kind of trying to share a little bit of our experience here. Doesn't mean that it's the only way to do it, but it is for sure a way that works. And if you're consistent with it, you'll be able to see some results.Alex: (41:17) What are we missing in regards to CBD, y'all? I mean, I'm sure there's a lot, but I mean we covered the main topics. Michelle: (41:22) Yeah, I think we covered it all. If you're interested in starting a CBD brand, we highly recommend it. We have all brands ourselves, and I think it's a great opportunity. Don't be scared to just because it's like a kind of a, a little risky, I guess, niche to jump into doesn't mean that it's not profitable. Keven: (41:48) And actually, I think there was one thing we missed niche. Make sure you niche yourself. Oh yeah. The problem right now is as you, as anyone might be aware, there is a lot of CBD, and we just said there's options everywhere. Niche yourself. Do not try to sell to everyone. Alex: (43:24) If you guys have any questions like we said, reach out. This is another episode of the Hustle Inspire Salsa podcast. Today we're tuning in from Miami with Michelle Chiia and Kevin Pimentel. This is Alex Quinn. We'll catch you guys on the next episode. Peace. FULL TRANSCRIPT: Passionistas: Hi, and welcome to The Passionistas Project Podcast, where we talk with women who are following their passions to inspire you to do the same. We're Amy and Nancy Harrington and today we're talking with Amy Chin, the founder of Calm Better Days. As someone who suffered from anxiety and postpartum depression, she found great relief with CBD and knew she had to help others understand how CBD could help them in a myriad of ways so she became a CBD educator. Calm Better Days walks clients through what CBD is, what you use it for, different delivery methods and how to find their dosage. Clients also receive a tailored CBD regimen based on the individual's needs and lifestyle, so they can dive into their CBD journey. So please welcome to the show, Amy Chin. Amy: Hi. Hi Nancy. Hi Amy. Thank you for having me on today. Passionistas: We're really excited about CBD and want to learn all about it. Tell us what's the one thing you're most passionate about. Amy: Well, it's cannabis. I'm most passionate about plant medicine. It is a gift that can heal in so many ways. And I think that, you know, as a society, we need to learn to tap into that. And I think that we are gearing into that category as we are learning that, you know, health these days is a integrated health, right. That means eating more plant-based diet, as well as doing your exercise, meditation, getting adequate sleep, all those play a role into our health. Passionistas: And so how does that translate into what you do for a living? Amy: Understanding that everything is integrative, right. I always talk to my clients and remind them that CBD will fast-track your health to where you want it to be, but will slow down depending on your other health lifestyle habits. So for example, let's say two people are battling, you know, hormonal imbalance. And if one is doing everything, having healthy habits in terms of sleep, exercise, diet, and let's say spiritually, they're going to be healthier, faster. However, if one is not adapting to those, you know, healthier lifestyle habits, it will take much longer. So that's how it all relates. And I think that we're all learning that as we go now, especially with COVID around. Passionistas: Well, let's take a little step back. Tell us where you grew up and what your childhood was like. Amy: I grew up in New York City, born and raised right in Chinatown. And being in a Chinese household, we didn't really speak much about health. We didn't speak much about feelings and emotions as well in a Chinese household. So for me, growing up now as a mom and being diagnosed with anxiety and postpartum depression was very new to me. I was very thankful it was diagnosed by my marriage therapist because I was not aware of the symptoms because we never spoke about it in my household. And that's why I love talking about it. Because now that I realize when it was diagnosed, I can then treat it. I can address it and take care of myself. When I didn't know what it was at the time, I just thought, oh, this is part of motherhood. This is something that I have to learn to deal with. And I assumed that this was just how it was. So I was very thankful it was diagnosed. And it was my marriage therapist who recommended CBD to me because I was leaning toward a more holistic life after being a mom. And I was not having good reactions from pharmaceutical meds. So I was very thankful that she did recommend something that was more holistic. And this was about eight years ago. At the time that was when you actually had to get a medical card to get CBD. And I got my card and started taking CBD. And that's when my life changed. It went from that cranky, irritable yelling mom that flew off the handle. And I hated who I was. I hated how I was with my children. And once I started taking CBD, I became so much more patient, so much more present and mindful. I was able to enjoy the time when I was interacting with my kids and realize, oh my goodness, life can be like this. It didn't have to be the way it was before. And when I felt that change in myself, it was so eye opening. I was finally able to respond to the days, you know, challenges instead of reacting. And once I felt that calm and ease, I was just like, I knew that I had to get the word out there. Because I knew that if I one, didn't also knew I had anxiety and postpartum depression, I was sure that other moms out there maybe going through the same thing, and may not be aware of it. And knowing that there's a natural alternative out there with no side effects, it is such a big, great help. And so that's how I started Calm Better Days, to help people find their calm better day. I know we go through that a lot where we're just living and, you know, suffering from something, right. Everyone's suffering from something, whether it's pain, whether it's mental, whether it's, you know, different health conditions. And that's the great thing about CBD is that it can address so many different issues, so many different health issues. You almost wonder how can it be? How can it be so wonderful that it addresses so many different health issues from anxiety, epilepsy, Alzheimers, heart disease, arthritis. It's almost too good to be true, but it really does. Passionistas: So I think there are misconceptions about what CBD is, and especially as it relates to cannabis and marijuana and people getting high and all that. So can you kind of talk about the myth of CBD and clarify for people that are listening, what it is? Amy: Absolutely. So CBD and THC, there are both cannabinoids found in a cannabis plant. And THC is the cannabinoid known to get you euphorically high and CBD does not get you euphorically high. They are however, both cycle active in the sense that if I have depression, a person who takes CBD, their moods and feelings will be elevated in terms of not feeling depressed, however, not intoxicated. So that's the big difference between CBD and THC. And because you don't get that euphoric high with CBD, a lot of people sometimes don't know when it's working. Because with THC, you know it's working when you get that euphoric high. But with CBD, because you're not getting that euphoric high people are like, well, what am I supposed to be feeling? And so I describe it as you know it's working when you're not feeling the negative symptoms that you're normally experiencing. So that can be that anxiety, right. With anxiety might come that overwhelm, that high level of stress, that tightness in your chest, or pain for some people, right. So when you're not feeling those negative symptoms anymore, that's when you know CBD is working. It makes you feel normal, not suffering. CBD is a potent bioaccumulator. So what that means is, it's going to soak up all the toxins in the soil, which can be heavy metal, fungi, mold, pesticide, mycotoxins. These are things we do not want to ingest. So always buy organic. And you know, hemp is such a potent bioaccumulator, they actually planted at Chernobyl to clean up the soil from the radiation. So if you're not buying organic and you're not looking at the certificate of analysis that every quality CBD product comes with, you can be ingesting toxins that will set off at another health condition. Passionistas: Is that what inspired you to found Calm Better Days? And what was the process of starting it? And what's your mission? Amy: I started Calm Better Days at the end of 2019, right before the pandemic started. So what happened was in 2018, the Farm Bill was passed. So CBD was federally legal and you did not need a medical card anymore to buy CBD. So that's when we saw that the market was getting saturated. We saw CBD products everywhere. And I saw two issues for new consumers. And that was one: because CBD was so new, not everyone understood how to properly use CBD to really access the benefits from the plan. And then two: because it's such a saturated market now, finding a safe and quality product was another unknown for new consumers. And so that's when I wanted to address both issues. So, what I do is... people can sign up for a virtual consultation, so it can be done anywhere, any state. And I walk people through the basics because if you don't understand the basics, you're not going to really be able to access and understand the plant fully. So when I say the basics, I mean, what is CBD? How does it work in your body that it can address so many different symptoms? And then walking the person through the different delivery methods between tinctures, edibles, vaporizers. What are their different activation times and how long they last for in your body? Understanding that makes it easier for you to develop a routine that works for you. And then also understanding your dosage. Everybody's dosage is very unique. And we're used to going to a doctor's office, let's say. And your doctor says, let's say you're starting an SSRI. We'll start you on a certain milligram. And the doctor will say, well, come back in a month and let's see how that works, and we'll adjust the dosage if necessary. And with plant medicine, it's no different, except that you're able to... if you're able to track and learn to read what your body is telling you, your body will tell you how much CBD you need. And I teach, you know, people that tracking system so that they can find out what works best for themselves. And lastly, after the education portion, I take a look at your specific health condition to recommend the best products for you. Everybody suffers from different things. And, you know, we're learning that CBD is just scratching the surface. There are other cannabinoids and other turpines that play a role in each product and, and the effect. So if you're telling me your issue is say Crohn's disease or a gut issue, then there is a cannabinoid CBG that is great for that, that will help clean up the gut, promote good gut flora, and also help with digestive issues. But let's say your issue is sleep. Then there is another cannabinoid, CBN, that is great for that. So this cuts down on time and money for the consumer because now they don't have to waste money on thinking, well, I think this product might work for me. And then also, you know, they're finding relief faster because now that they have the products in hand that are right for them, now they know how to use it as well. So that's how Calm Better Days was born and the mission behind it. I also carry about 15 to 20 different brands. And I support and focus on small farmed, women own and BIPOC owned brands. One, I believe that small farm that's where the quality is. I don't believe in, you know, huge commercial grows. The standards are very different, as well as you know, I like to look into the company's mission. I want to make sure that they're really about helping people and growing quality product. And that's why I believe that, you know, especially people new to this industry, right. They may not be aware of the history behind it and what goes on. So I want to steer them toward good quality companies that are, you know, really focus on the quality of the product and really helping people. Passionistas: So how do you go from being diagnosed, that this is a treatment that will work for you as an individual, to gaining all this knowledge that you now have, where you can help other people? What kind of studying and practices did you do to get to this place? Amy: Before I started CBD, I was a cannabis enthusiast. And once I discovered the CBD side, I was just blown away. I was like, is there anything this plant cannot do? And it was when I felt the results with CBD, that I started diving into it myself, doing all the research possible. And once I knew what I wanted to do and start my company, I then became cannabis licensed with Dr. Mary Clifton. She is a board certified internal doctor who specializes in cannabis. And the studies don't stop because every day we're now finding new studies, right? Because now we can study the plant. Before we were not able to study the plant because it was, you know, it's still a Schedule 1 drug, and that's why there are no studies beforehand. But like I was saying, now studies are coming out. So it doesn't stop. And every day there are new industry trends that I need to keep up on. But I love, I love finding out all this information. So I take what I've, you know, been consuming myself for years, as well as the studies that are now available, and apply that to people who are looking for new alternatives to health. Passionistas: Tell us a little bit about the pop-ups that you do.. Amy: So I do a lot of pop-ups. I don't have a brick and mortar store, so I do a lot of pop-ups. Especially at women networking events, because, you know, I am a mom. And I know that moms ,we take on so much that our anxiety and stress is... I think a lot of moms suffer. So I'm hoping one day we'll have a brick and mortar so that I can do more explaining and education in the store. I find that right now, although people are in need of it, I think because we're all so busy right now with COVID and everything is online, we're just too busy to sometimes even have that consultation. Or even too busy to go online to order things. So pop-ups are helpful to be right in front of them. You talked a little bit about the different forms that people can take CBD in. Can you kind of talk a little bit more in detail about that? Amy: So back then the only, not the only, but the most common way was through inhalation, smoking a joint or a blunt. Nowadays, we have vaporizers. And I love vaporizers because one, you're not burning carcinogens. Like before with the joint you had the paper, the flour is all burning and that's consuming carcinogens. Which I want to save my throat, so I don't consume flower anymore in that form, but I do use vaporizers. There's no scent to it. There is no carcinogens in my throat, so it saves my throat. But also I love it because it provides the quickest onset. So you'll feel it within 5 to 10 minutes. And this is great for, let's say a person suffering from panic attacks or anxiety attacks, and they need that quick relief. Or maybe they have severe, intense back pain that they need real quick relief from. The vaporizer will get to that quickest. But I also understand that, you know, for some people they just don't want to inhale anything. And that's where, you know, the industry has been so innovative in the different formats that CBD comes in. So there are edibles. And edibles are gummies, honey, chocolate, anything that needs to go through your stomach and liver to metabolize. But because it has to go through your stomach, it will take much longer to kick in. So it takes about 30 to 90 minutes. But people love it because it's portable. It's easy to consume. You just, if it's a gummy, you could put it in your bag, just pop one when you need it. And, it does last much longer than a vaporizer. It can last from 4 to 6 hours, even 8 hours for some people. So when we think about different delivery methods, you want to think about what's going to make it easy for us to consume on a daily basis. Because then you make it easy as part of your routine. But if you're doing something that you don't like, and it's difficult, then it doesn't become part of your routine. So other formats are tinctures. Tinctures are CBD suspended in MCT oil. And it comes in a bottle with a dropper. And normally you want to drop it underneath your tongue. Hold it there for 60 seconds before you swallow. And that allows it to be absorbed into your bloodstream and will take about 20 to 40 minutes to activate. And will last about four hours. And when I talk about delivery methods, there is a time and place for everything. So what I mean by that is we want to think about our situation, what we need to address, and then also about the place where we're at, right? Because we want it to be easy and convenient. Once I wake up. That's when my anxiety and depression is at its worse, right. It's hard to be motivated. I'm, you know, don't want to get out of bed. And it's hard for me to be focused and productive. So I know right away in the morning, I either use my vaporizer or my tincture because I want to set the tone for my day. And I want it to be quick to get out of that slump and kind of like jumpstart my day. So, I either do one of those two things. And then after that, because I know it lasts for about four hours and I work at home, thankfully. So that's when I take an edible. I pop a gummy right before my lunch, because I know I have a long afternoon ahead and I don't want to have to think about redosing. And I take it right before my lunch, because I want it to go down with the good fat from my diet. Because then your body will absorb more of the CBD and also quicker, versus taking it on an empty stomach where your stomach acids might get to it first, or after a full meal where your liver just has to metabolize more. And then after the gummy wears off is probably around dinner time/after dinner. And it depends on what I need to do. If I need to do more, then I'll dose accordingly. But let's say, you know, I put in a hard day's work. I really want to relax. I don't want to think about work, then I can also do something relaxing, like a tea to kind of like set the mood for my night. Set myself up for good sleep and have a really relaxing night. And that's a great thing about it. Is that now with so many different products, it feels like a self treat. I can do an afternoon little chocolate piece or, you know, have my tea, right. Or maybe it's honey drizzled on top or fruit as my dessert after dinner. So there are different ways of consuming it. And not only that, but after my shower, you know, my muscles usually there's like soreness or stress from my neck down. And I love after a shower putting on a good CBD lotion just to melt all that tension, all that stress away. And that also eases me into my, you know, good nights rest. Passionistas: I think everybody associates weed with patchouli. Like these creams and the tinctures and everything. Do they smell like cannabis or do they come now in like lavender? Amy: They do. They come in so many different formats, so many different scents, and I love it. I have this one by Common Ground and it's bergamot and I love bergamot. And it goes on so smooth, so luxurious. So satiny too. I'm loving the creams that they come up with now because it doesn't smell like cannabis and it goes on so nice. It feels like any other luxurious cream, you wouldn't . Even know that it's, you know, specifically CBD. Not only does it smell great, but it really helps ease that tension, melt away any stress or pain that you may have. It's great because it's anti-inflammatory, which can be acne, rosacea, the redness, right. That's all inflammation. So that takes care of that. It also regulates your sebum control. So back then, when I was hormonally imbalanced, I had horrible cystic acne. My face would get shiny in an hour because I was over producing oil. So the CBD oil helps balance out your sebum. So instead of over-producing oil, it was balancing that out. So now my face doesn't get shiny in an hour. And also my cystic acne, it would hurt less because the CBD oil was taking care of the pain, as well as the inflammation. So CBD facial oil is also anti-aging and anti-oxidant. So it's great for the face. And I use it every day. It's cleaned up my skin regimen. Like before I used to apply so much acne medication, so many different retinals this and that. Now is just double cleanse and the facial moisturizers, CBD facial moisturizer and nothing else. It will take out the puffiness. I have an eye serum. And also for dark spots. Because it quickens the cellular turnover, so the dark spots will fade quicker as well. So it's cut down my steps and products. I love it. I recommend it for everyone. Passionistas: What if someone is on traditional medication? Are there interactions that they should speak with a doctor about before starting a regimen? Amy: Always speak with your doctor especially when you are on pharmaceutical drugs. And on my website, I have a partnership with Leaf411, which is a nonprofit organization of cannabis nurses. So what that means is you can call them and say, you know, you were referred from Calm Better Days. And that makes the call free. You do have to pay for the service, but because I have the partnership, it is free. And what you can do is say, "I am on medication X, Y, Z. Will CBD interact with it?" For the most part, CBD does not interact with most drugs. The only concern is if you are on blood thinners or blood pressure medication. Anything that interacts with grapefruit and you cannot take, CBD works like that grapefruit. It's, an enzyme inhibitor. So that you would have to watch. Passionistas: You talked a little bit about how your personal life has changed from making this discovery. But tell us a little bit more about, kind of, the transformation you personally have made since you started using CBD in this way. Amy: Well, let's see, I've been on it for about, CBD specifically, for over eight years now. Cannabis in general, probably over a decade. So I have now become a more mindful person, definitely more aware about my health. And this was also after becoming a mom, more holistic, more plant-based. Because when I was at my darkest point with anxiety and postpartum depression, that's when my health was out of balance. I was hormonally imbalanced. I wasn't eating right at that time. So during the time when I was consuming CBD was also when I was making healthier lifestyle changes in terms of my diet, more plant-based. And as a mom, you know, I know I'm supposed to exercise more and also get adequate sleep. However, it's very hard to fit those two things in as a busy mom, also running her own company. And I know that, right. And that is why I make sure to take my CBD every day. So at least then my body won't crack from not doing the things that I know I'm supposed to do. If I can, I do try to, of course do it. But in terms of lifestyle, that's how it's changed. I'm more aware of what I do need to do, as well as my mental state. I would say before CBD, I felt like my life felt like, you know, how, when you're that hamster on the hamster wheel and it's constantly going. And you just feel that you have to. And then once I took CBD, it kind of took me out of that hamster wheel and I could see, oh my gosh, I'm that hamster. And it didn't have to be like that. It allowed me to have calmness and mindfulness so I can see and be aware of what goes on in my life. And the funny thing is, you know, they always suggest therapy and all that. And I have been going to years of that and try to practice meditation and yoga, but my mind would not be still. And I just could not tap into it no matter how hard I tried. But with the CBD, I was able to finally tap into that and calm my mind and be aware of everything that was going on, so that now if I take CBD before a yoga session or a meditation, it just enhances that session because now I can really focus in and tap into that. Whereas before I just could not calm my mind to, to focus in on that. Passionistas: Do you find that people are, like who don't get it, who don't understand it personally, like are judgmental about the concept of CBD? And how do you address people who come at you in that way? Amy: Absolutely. I get a lot of people who don't understand it. And that's why I love to talk about it. And I get that they don't understand it. And sometimes it comes with, of course, you don't get it because you don't have the basic fundamentals. And, and that's why I'm here to help you understand that, because I feel that once you understand that, then everything starts clicking. And then after that is you have to experiment and try it. And you know, we've been so conditioned as a society to think that, okay, a doctor is here, they prescribe medicine. And then you just take it blindly, right? And with plant medicine, it's a different approach in that you can do it yourself, but you have to be patient. You have to be open to it and you have to be open to tracking it so that you can tell yourself, well, how much does my body need? But we haven't listened to our bodies in so long that it seems like a new practice. And we have to remember that herbs, cannabis, that was the original medicine of days long ago before pharmaceutical medicine was made in a lab. So we have to understand that that's what we started with and it's going back to that. And I understand sometimes even with the education, it may still be hard to understand. But once that person tries it and they feel it, then that is like, I'm hooked now. Now I want to understand more and dive into it more. And sometimes it's all about finding the right dosage to get you there. Or finding the right product because everyone is going to respond differently to a vaporizer versus a tincture versus an edible. You know, for some people edibles, for whatever reason, doesn't work for them, for their body, their genetic makeup. So sometimes that's when a vaporizer can really help. And I love vaporizers because I find that because of the quick onset, that people really feel it. Where sometimes when they're waiting for an edible to kick in, they forget that they're waiting and then the day goes by and then they're not mindful of, oh, my day actually went by smoother. I wasn't blowing up at everything, right. But sometimes people don't notice that because we're not mindful. We're not reading what our body is telling us. And usually we only hear what our body is telling us when it's screaming, right. And that's when it's like suffering from a pain or suffering from something that happened in our body. Passionistas: From all the people that you've worked with, is there like one specific example that you can think of as like a success story that you're especially blown away by? Amy: Well, right now, a lot of clients are coming to me for sleep issues and stress issues and actually gut issues. Well, gut and mind is all related. So that's why stress and gut health are like hand in hand. And that's why a lot of people are coming for that. But sleep. So I've seen a lot of people come back and say, you know what? I've been getting good sleep. And stress has been lowered. I've had a lot of clients who were on pharmaceutical meds for anxiety, stress, depression, and have weaned off of it. When I hear that they've weaned off of pharmaceutical meds and still feeling great, I am so happy because I know that they're feeling better because they're no longer feeling the side effects from the pharmaceutical drugs. Which was the main reason why a lot of them wanted to get off of that. So when I hear that, I just know that, you know, that makes me feel wonderful that I'm actually helping people feel better. Jake Crossman is the managing director of USA Medical. USA Medical is a company that is proud to be transparent about their top-of-the-line, 3rd party lab-tested CBD products. I brought him on the show to talk about the theory behind CBD oil. You hear about it all the time now, and I wanted to explore why there is so much media attention, and if it's validated or just marketing hype. I started my research for this episode skeptical on the validity of the claims of CBD oil manufacturers, but I couldn't find too much evidence of negative short-term or long-term side effects of taking CBD oil consistently. Overall, I think there needs to continue to be more research done on CBD oil, especially long term studies. If you are comfortable trying CBD oil, I encourage you to do your own research and make sure that you trust the company you purchase from. In this week's discussion we talked about: What is CBD? You might have heard there are some health benefits to CBD, but you might be thinking that seems like a risky choice to take in a country where “marijuana” is illegal in most states. Will CBD get you high? The short answer is no, especially with the topical varieties that are sold at Harmons. But we wanted to go a little more in-depth, and so Greg Jones, our pharmacy director, and Denise Braby, the director of home, health, and beauty, join our podcast hosts Chef Lesli Sommerdorf and Brandon Young to share some great points to help you make sense of all of this information and explain why Harmons sells topical CBD products. For more information please visit https://www.harmonsgrocery.com Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HarmonsGroceryStores/ Follow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/harmonsgrocery?igshid=6ir2kf3qy3jy For our podcast blog directory: https://www.harmonsgrocery.com/podcast-archive/ There are three species of cannabis plants, and they are cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis. In cannabis plants, the main cannabinoids are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is the cannabinoid responsible for marijuana’s well-known psychological effects. Legal CBD comes from industrial hemp, a variety of the cannabis sativa plant, and hemp fiber is used for things like clothing, paper, and rope. From 1937 to 2018, growing hemp was illegal on a federal level, but the 2018 US Farm Bill changed that, allowing hemp growers to generate cash crop legally as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. You can extract CBD (cannabidiol), from hemp. After the Farm Bill passed, a new industry using CBD was born. Cannabis has been around for about 28 million years, evolving on the eastern Tibetan Plateau, and is a close relative of the common hops found in beer. While it’s been around a long time, there is still a lot that is not known about it. The topical usage is mainly for pain relief, and we have quite a few topical products in our stores, including Muscle MX. One of the mandates of the government in allowing CBD sales is that medical claims are not made on the packaging or advertising. In Utah, they must also be licensed with the state, and required to provide a COA (certificate of analysis). So, you can be assured anything sold in our stores meets these requirements. In this fascinating discussion, Greg and Denise share a lot of information about CBD, and you’ll want to tune in to learn more about CBD, and the effects of it on your body, including a few reasons you might want to use caution when deciding whether or not to try topical CBD. About Denise Braby Denise Braby is Harmons’ director of home, health, and beauty and has been a director for 10 years. Are you curious about all the hype surrounding CBD? It's one of the most talked about and controversial topics in wellness, and there's a lot to know when it comes to how CBD actually works (and if it works), what kinds of products are out there, and the science behind all of the buzz. Chris Roth was an investment banker who studied CBD research before anyone really knew about it and became an early-adopter of CBD. After seeing positive results with CBD personally for managing his anxiety, he knew he had to share what he found. So Highline Wellness was born and it was one of the first brands to bring CBD to New York City's wellness scene. In today's episode, you'll hear about Chris's journey founding a CBD company (before the craze started) and the story behind the science of CBD and why it's taken so long to get more research on the products. Disclaimer: CBD products are not regulated or approved by the FDA (except for one prescription drug) and you should consult your doctor or healthcare professional before starting this or any other supplement. At the 2019 Ancestral Health Symposium, I managed to catch up with metabolism and fitness expert Mike T. Nelson, PhD. Mike was there presenting on a subject that many in the health space find both intriguing and confusing: cannabinoids and CBD. Really, who amongst us hasn’t wondered if using CBD will get us in hot water at the next work-related drug screening? And is it even legal? On this podcast, Mike demystifies the terms bantered about when it comes to the cannabis plant.  What exactly is the difference between hemp, THC, and CBD anyway? He cuts through the marketing hype and talks about the specific health conditions that respond best to cannabidiol (CBD). Will CBD Gummies Help With Anxiety? This is what I found out. I have reviewed CBD gummies for 3 days and here are my results. Lots of people take CBD gummies for anxiety including those of us on the autism spectrum. As I am on autistic I have a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome, I tend to always look for help with anxiety and wanted to do a CBD gummies review. I would say these are currently the best CBD gummies I have found, for the taste and price for what you get. In this video I try CBD gummies and discuss the results. 1. Do CBD gummies do anything? Yes I would say they are fantastic at helping with ache and pains, and a LOT with Anxiety 2. Do CBD gummies help you sleep? I haven't’ tried them for sleep yet, but they do relax you and lots of people have found them excellent for sleeping. 3. How long does it take for CBD gummies to work? These ones I have with 10mg of CBD in each CBD gummie take about 20 mins to full get to work in your system. 4. What are the side effects of CBD gummies? Currently I haven’t had any side effects, the closest I have had is after taking them I sometimes feel a little bit sleepy depending on the time of day. 5. Will CBD gummies help with anxiety? YES I believe they do, I use CBD for anxiety and CBD for pain and it works VERY WELL! 6. What are the best CBD products? I would say CBD gummy (CBD Gummies) and CBD oil are going the best products to use. 7. How much are CBD gummies? These ones I have cost £21.99 for a 2 month supply so these are pretty decent priced. This video is a bit different for the CBD gummies hemp bombs review I have seen as these are from Yumi Nutrition and is not a hemp bombs CBD gummies review --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theaspieworld/support
