On today's episode we have Will Shaw. He's the founder of the popular golf website Golf Insider UK which heavily covers better ways to practice. He's a PGA Pro who works with players on their swings and their physical training. He teaches as Leeds Beckett University on sport biomechanics and skill acquisition, which means he specializes in the most optimal ways to practice. He has his masters in in exercise science, and his PhD in biomedical science. He knows a ton about practice and that makes up the bulk of what we talk about. So if you're looking for ways to get the most out of your time at the course, this episode definitely covers that. We also of course get into the link between practice and the mental game. This is part 1 of a two part conversation with Dr. Shaw, so there's a lot of great info to be gained. There's a common theme across a lot of sports where athletes find it hard to transfer their skills from training or practice to competitive events and tournaments when the pressure is on.  Today I chatted to Will Shaw, a highly qualified PGA golf professional and sport's scientist who shares with me his insights.  It's a must listen if you're into golf or if you're looking to understand better what things to consider when learning how to transfer your skills to the golf course.  We discuss how to build your confidence and resilience, planning and executing your practice as well as a whole lot more. Key Learning Points: You must spend a good amount of time hitting balls to get some volume, as well as getting on the golf course. The range needs to be more representative of the golf course, where you hit a driver every now and again, lies are slightly different, the wind comes from different angles, playing to different targets testing your decision making. Ask yourself what am I going to practice and why. How you look at statistics impacts your self-confidence. When planning your practice adopt a 70/30 rule of being flexible. There are many different ways to practice, technical, performance, creative or process practice. Will Shaw is the CEO of Better Agency, an all-in-one insurance CRM platform. Growing up, Will had one focus: football. He spent the first part of his career playing in the NFL. After his time playing football professionally, he landed a job in the tech industry, where he was inspired to start his journey in entrepreneurship. Since his time at Infusionsoft, Will started several businesses all in the marketing and tech industry. In 2019, he founded Better Agency with four other founders, and has been the CEO of the company ever since. Will pitched the idea of the product to a room of 24 insurance agents before building the software. He put together a 3 page PDF of the idea, and 11 of the agents agreed to sign up for the software before it even existed. They didn’t pay much for marketing in the early months of the software, instead they built an affiliate relationship with someone with influence within the insurance industry. “We’re going to build a product for agents, by agents.”Their goal for their customers using the platform: “We are dealing with true small businesses. Instead of being a CRM that takes your time and your money to set up. Can we be something you plug in and within 14 days you are making enough money to pay for the life of your application?”Are there any routines or traits from your days in football that you carry into your role as CEO of Better Agency?“Probably the biggest thing I got from playing football was being in a room of people who are committed to being the best at their craft. Any position on the team - you’re committed to being the best at your craft. It doesn’t matter what you do in life, if you’re committed to being the best - you can be the best and be successful doing it.”A game-changing moment:Will went to a couple of his current paying customers and asked if they would like to invest in the company. “Through our customers we raised 250,000 in about 30 days… This was the biggest validation.” Additional Links:Check out Better Agency: https://betteragency.io/Follow along with Will: https://www.linkedin.com/in/willshaw8/

New indie band The Gods of Small Things are celebrating the release of their latest single, Analogue God. The Sunderland four-piece initially started life as a duo when Annabel and Josh came together at the beginning of the year, before deciding to expand so they could perform live. Bassist and backing vocalist Annabel Crowther explains: “Me and Jason launched as a duo in January this year, recording our first EP ourselves, but then decided to recruit a full band to gig, we were very lucky to find our drummer Will Shaw straight from the off and an old music comrade of Jason’s, Graham Mucker Mclauchlin, came in on lead guitar. We then recorded our current EP, Singing In The Dark – the first single off this, Analogue God, came out on November 20.”
