The St. Francis Dam, or the San Francisquito Dam, was a concrete gravity dam located in San Francisquito Canyon in northern Los Angeles County, California, United States, that was built between 1924 and 1926. The dam failed catastrophically in 1928, killing at least 431 people in the subsequent flood, in what is considered to have been one of the worst American civil engineering disasters of the 20th century and the third-greatest loss of life in California history. The dam was built to serve the growing water needs of the city of Los Angeles, creating a large regulating and storage reservoir that was an integral part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. It was located in San Francisquito Canyon, about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. However, a defective soil foundation and design flaws led to the dam's collapse just two years after its completion. Its failure ended the career of William Mulholland, the general manager and chief engineer of the Bureau of Water Works and Supply (now the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) You will find the full transcript behind the show notes: https://interspanish.buzzsprout.comIf you have a story or topic you would like me to cover, please send your suggestions to: InterSpanishPodcast@gmail.com Please visit my socials: Website: https://interspanish.buzzsprout.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuy74tWny908FqEX3VSixHXGbCu1IL3Zq Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/319567492909061 Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Intermediate_Spanish/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/interspanish/

William Mulholland was summoned to the St. Francis Dam in San Francisquito Canyon early March 12, 1928, to inspect some leaks that workers found worrisome. Mulholland shrugged off the concerns and declared the dam -- the 19th he'd designed alone to feed water to the parched desert of Los Angeles -- perfectly safe. Hours later, the dam gave way, releasing billions of gallons of water downstream, killing more than 400 people. A controversial and sometimes shady right of way project may be single-handedly responsible for the City of Los Angeles as we know it, and all that it represents.  The Los Angeles Aqueduct, the brain child of William Mulholland and Fred Eaton, miraculously transformed a sleepy oil town into a world famous metropolis.  Armchair Engineer Adam Ratliff (TikTok: @armchairengineer) joins Infrastructure Junkies to explain the genesis of this project, all that it entails and how it was accomplished, the disastrous effects on the Owens River Valley, and the tragedy of a dam failure which claimed the lives of over 400 people.  One thing is certain:  if there is no aqueduct, there is no modern day Los Angeles. This weekly 30 minute program, sponsored by the Title Insurance and Trust Company of Los Angeles, attempted to recreate the spirit and times of the ranchos and vaqueros in Southern Califorina, when the way of life was considerably different. Although hewing to a strict story line, the show neverless also was able to supply considerable descriptive color to the manner of life in those days. For example, the listerner may learn of the customs by which the master of the house is waited upon by his wife at all meals and that she and the rest of the family may not partake until the head of the rancho has finished. The commercials, too, proceeded along similar lines, recollecting that in the period being dramatized there were but a few parcels of land and those were of tremendous size, owned by wealthy individuals. Now there are over 2,000,000 seperate parcels of land in Los Angeles County alone. The program was well written and the historical material adds nicely to the flavor. We're back, and the “L.A. Trilogy” is finally here! Joined by Los Angeles journalist and historian Hadley Meares, Sean and Cody delve into the environmental history of L.A. by examining this classic 1974 film noir thriller, generally regarded as one of the finest pictures ever made. In Chinatown, private gumshoe J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by a mysterious femme fatale to stick his soon-to-be-sliced nose into a grubby affair involving L.A.'s water commissioner. The case soon takes a nasty turn as Gittes and his moll Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) find themselves in the mist of a labyrinthine conspiracy to steal water and prime real estate in the biggest swindle of all time. Environmental issues discussed include the real-life “water wars” of L.A. vs. the Owens Valley in the early 1900s, the St. Francis dam disaster of 1928, the Los Angeles river, and ethnic cleansing by Los Angeles authorities in the 1930s, especially involving the power of eminent domain. How true is the Bond villain-like conspiracy at the heart of Chinatown's plot? How close is it to the real conspiracy, engineered in the early 1900s, to inflict a deliberate drought on Los Angeles's prime crop land in advance of a vote on a bond measure to fund water infrastructure? William Mulholland: hero or villain? Why did Owens Valley farmers go full-on terrorist in the 1920s, attacking aqueducts with dynamite? How did the Chinese-American population of L.A. get shafted by their white neighbors, not once, but twice? How does this film exemplify the genre of film noir? What does this picture have to do with the Manson murders and Roman Polanski's own monstrous crimes? How does Chinatown lead into the next film in the L.A. Trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? All these questions and more are shadowing you in a ‘35 Packard in what may prove to be an iconic episode of Green Screen. Content warning: the director of this film, Roman Polanski, is a convicted child rapist; there is brief discussion of his crime in the episode. This weekly 30-minute program, sponsored by the Title Insurance and Trust Company of Los Angeles, attempted to recreate the spirit and times of the ranchos and vaqueros in Southern California when the way of life was considerably different. Although hewing to a strict storyline, the show nevertheless also was able to supply considerable descriptive colour to the manner of life in those days. For example, the listener may learn of the customs by which the master of the house is waited upon by his wife at all meals and that she and the rest of the family may not partake until the head of the rancho has finished. The commercials, too, proceeded along similar lines, recollecting that in the period being dramatized there were but a few parcels of land and those were of tremendous size, owned by wealthy individuals. Now there are over 2,000,000 separate parcels of land in Los Angeles County alone. The program was well written and the historical material adds nicely to the flavour.   --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

At just three minutes before midnight on March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam, which had been designed as a reservoir for the Los Angeles water supply by William Mulholland, suddenly failed, releasing 11 billion gallons of water into a narrow valley in northeastern Los Angeles County, destroying everything in its path. Over the course of the next four hours, a roaring wall of water swept through the night, traveling 55 miles from the San Francisquito Valley, through the Santa Clara Valley, and on to the Pacific Ocean. ------------------- *Where To Find Us:* ------------------- Sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.com ( http://www.americanhauntingspodcast.com ) Follow us on Twitter @AmerHauntsPod , @TroyTaylor13 ( https://twitter.com/troytaylor13 ) , @CodyBeckSTL ( https://twitter.com/codybeckstl ). The Renaissance Dam has been the subject of international negotiations for years, and has even prompted some threats of armed conflict. The issues surrounding the dam are complex, important, and discussed infrequently here in the United States—but Blum and Raimi jump right into the topic. The Californian Century

Stanley Tucci tells the story of William Mulholland and the lies that made Los Angeles possible., The founders of LA had a vision of a future megacity. But there was just one problem - it was a virtual desert, with very little rainfall. William Mulholland was the man charged with bringing water to the desert. But not without a great deal of double dealing and duplicity. California wants to dazzle you with its endless sunshine and visions of the future – but that's just a mirage. Stanley Tucci imagines the modern history of California as a Hollywood movie, playing a hard-boiled screenwriter uncovering the full, sordid truth. He knows exactly where all the bodies are buried. With the failure of the Watterson brothers’ banks, the Owens Valley community was forced to abandon its fight for water rights against the city of Los Angeles. William Mulholland, the Los Angeles water department superintendent, could finally breathe a little easier. The city now had full control over its water supply for the foreseeable future. But he would discover that some things can’t be foreseen. Construction had finished in 1926 on the last of the nineteen dams that lined the aqueduct. Standing 200 feet tall, the St. Francis dam held back billions of gallons of water. But by spring of 1928, troubling cracks were beginning to appear in the dam’s surface. The events of March 12, 1928, would lead not only to a terrible catastrophe, but would forever change the way the citizens of Los Angeles thought about William Mulholland -- the man who brought them water.Support us by supporting our sponsors!Quip - Go to GETQUIP.com/TELLERS to get your first refill FREE.Sleep Number - Discover proven quality sleep and save 50% on the 360® Limited Edition smart bed now during the Ultimate Sleep Number event. Land deals from nearly a decade ago would threaten to derail the entire project, just a year shy of its completion. As the roaring Twenties loomed, Los Angeles would grow exponentially. By 1907, the city of Los Angeles had found a solution to its water problem. Two hundred miles north in the Owens River Valley was a never-ending source of water. Los Angeles Water Department superintendent William Mulholland set about constructing one of the largest public works projects the state of California has ever seen. But first, he would have to convince the voters of Los Angeles to approve the project. And then, he would have to build it himself. For five years construction crews filed into the desert, building a massive aqueduct system that would ferry the water all the way to the thirsty city. Along the way, Mulholland would encounter problems with bureaucrats, bad food, and dynamite. With the project hurtling towards completion, serious doubts would be raised about graft and self-interest. Was the Los Angeles aqueduct really just about water? By the turn of the twentieth century, Los Angeles had grown from a dusty, crime-ridden pueblo into a thriving metropolis. The only problem was that it was growing too fast. With no consistently reliable water source and a desert climate leading to a decade-long drought, the city would have to begin looking elsewhere. In the Owens River Valley, over two hundred miles north of the city, a vast, rushing river, fed by Sierra mountain snow, lay the solution. But how to get the water from the Owens Valley to Los Angeles? City water superintendent William Mulholland and former Los Angeles mayor Fred Eaton devised a breathtakingly simple plan: they would build an aqueduct. As Mulholland began sketching out an engineering vision for the project, Eaton secretly purchased land rights in the Owens Valley. But Eaton’s methods left many valley residents bewildered and angry, setting up a decades-long battle for survival that would pit a metropolis against a small ranching community.Support us by supporting our sponsors!

William Mulholland was an almost legendary figure in American engineering, with a career spanning 40-plus years. He was responsible for bringing water to the thirsty young metropolis of Los Angeles. When he built his second concrete gravity dam, however, he overstepped his own knowledge. The collapse of the St. Francis Dam killed at least 411 people, with many still unidentified to this day. When the dam burst, nearly 12.5 billion gallons of water raced from the mountains above present-day Santa Clarita over 50 miles to the Pacific Ocean, destroying everything - and everyone - in the way.

The city’s water chief William Mulholland built an aqueduct to grab water over two hundred miles away in Owens Valley, but it wasn’t enough. Those of us in California know all too well what’s its like to be living in the midst of a drought.  Gov. Jerry Brown recently put in place restrictions demanding that urban water use be cut by 25%.  Already the push back is coming.  In a state where agriculture uses well over 50% of the state’s water, and only contributes 3% to the state’s economy, urban water users are becoming angry. There is much talk about pipelines, about desalination, and new technology to bring water to the parched desert that is much of California. All of this echoes a battle of an earlier time.  A time, at the turn of the last century, when a man named William Mulholland would devise a plan to make the desert that was Los Angeles bloom and allow it to become the world class, cutting edge metropolis that it is today.Perhaps in these dry times, its instructive to look back to that previous period and see what we might learn. My conversation with Les Standiford about his book Water to the Angels: William Mulholland, His Monumental Aqueduct, and the Rise of Los Angeles
