This episode is sponsored by Better Help. Is rock and roll an untapped conduit for healing after shunning? Filmmaker Scott Homan's debut documentary feature “'Witness Underground”, sheds light on the experiences, creative expressions, and defection of ex-members of the Jehovah's Witnesses community. The film delves into the journey of notable underground bands within the culty, culty JW organization, and chronicles their musical legacy comprising over 30 albums across multiple decades. Scott joins us today to talk about his experience coming of age as a second generation JW, and how he and other ex-JWs have harnessed the power of art for awakening and therapeutic purposes after escaping high-control religion. Shownotes: Filmmaker Scott Homan, was raised as a second generation Jehovah's Witness in Wisconsin where his teenage music community recorded albums while being influenced by the cult. He studied photography and digital media in Minneapolis and now runs Banana Island Films, which was born in a music community during his years in Hanoi, Vietnam. His present projects focus on artists escaping cults, demonstrating that self-expression through art shortens the path to healing from shunning. “Witness Underground” is his debut feature documentary, and as a wider project, includes the Witness Underground YouTube channel and the series “XJW Coming Out.” “Witness Underground” was just released on major streaming platforms, TUBI for free with ads, and on Amazon to rent or buy. This woman was interrogated by cult leaders. Female Hollywood writer, actor, director, Bonnie Root, explores the system of manipulation, abuse, and control in the Jehovah Witnesses and the film industry. We dive into her experience with a cult Judicial Committee, sexual interrogations, her award-winning film, "Sissy" about grooming of teens, The Movie, a physchological thriller, and her new ExJW film coming out, Diary of Heather Keating, a narrative exposing the Judicial Committee for the abuse common in the Jehovah's Witness system of punishment. Share your experience with the community in the comments! We met because my Witness Underground documentary and her film, THE MOVIE, both played at GenreBlast Film Festival. The director, Michael Mandell, approached me after seeing Witness Underground to let me know that Bonnie Root, the star actor in his film, THE MOVIE, was also a former Jehovah's Witness. I invited her to our California film premiere in Los Angeles at the Filmocracy Film Festival. A bunch of ExJW's showed up and we've been in touch ever since. I'm so excited to be able to share her amazing work with you!In this gripping narrative directed by Bonnie Root, a prominent female director in Hollywood, the harrowing realities of religious oppression and manipulation come to light. Her experience being interrogated and abused by cult leaders has shaped much of her life and empowered her to expose this religion for what it really is, a dangerous manipulative control cult. Her films delve into the depths of cruelty within religious processes, highlighting the systemic violations of women's rights. This woman's journey unfolds as she faces offensive religious interrogations and manipulative control tactics by the Jehovah Witnesses' judicial committee. Through Root's lens, we witness the profound impact of the system of manipulation, abuse, and control within this organization."Diary of Heather Keating," scripted by Root, promises a raw exploration of narcissistic abuse within the context of religious communities. Root's previous work on "Sissy" has established her as a formidable force in shedding light on sensitive topics, particularly the destructive form of grooming common in this cult. She confronts the reality of women's rights violations and the insidious nature of religious oppression processes. Experience the power of storytelling to expose the truth to ignite global awareness and change.
Ryan DuVal, software engineer and old friend from Colorado, was the only person I asked to help produce Witness Underground. He flew up from Asheville North Carolina as our producer in Minneapolis and was the guiding light for multiple editing revisions. He brought a fresh perspective to the project that became essential in telling this deep nuanced story. This episode was recorded at the Auxbus podcast studio in Asheville, a start-up where he pioneered the audio software we recorded this on. He interviews me and my personal back story for the first time. (Auxbus was later bought by Libsyn and his software is their trademark audio editing software for their podcast distribution company). This was recorded on the heals of our production together, and after story-lock in our documentary post-production phase. He had a huge hand in the production influencing the story, and pulling out many valuable moments across our interviews. He also ran sound, wrote interview questions, and asked the interview questions, co-directing the storytelling. He also ran second camera for interviews, live performance music videos, and also some of the side stories that made it into the film, among many additional roles that we shared. He was essential in the creation of this film. Enjoy this episode as he digs into my back story and the creation of this film, the XJW Coming Out series, and this podcast. Thanks Ryan!Watch now:http://WitnessUnderground.comWatch & Support:https://vimeo.com/ondemand/witnessundergroundhttps://Patreon.com/WitnessUndergroundhttps://YouTube.com/@WitnessUndergroundStore:https://witness-underground-cult-documentary-release.pledgebox.com/preorderJump into our Discordhttps://discord.gg/WUp9c95rsXReach out directly: XJWdoc@gmail.com-Scott

Wow! This is our six hundredth episode! This week, we have Scott Homan, director and producer of “Witness Underground,” a new documentary about Jehovah’s Witnesses leaving the church and an underground music scene within the community. We also reconnect with James Zimmerman, author of “Deliverance at Hand,” whom we talked to way back in episode […]
Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly welcome Scott Homan and Chad Rhiger to discuss their film, “Witness Underground,” a documentary about young Jehovah's Witnesses with a shared interest in music who managed to break free from the religion. They discuss Scott and Chad's lives, the religion's attitude to truth, and its cruel practice of shunning. The discussion also takes up cultish practices by other groups, religious and political; how to combat cultism; and the experience of “absolute possibility” upon leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses. Plus current-events segment: SCOCO DQs DJT. Anne Jaclard and Andrew talk about the Colorado Supreme Court's disqualification of Trump from running for president, and negative hot takes on the ruling coming from parts of the left (Eric Levitz, Ben Burgis).
Losing friends, making new ones, reuniting with old ones, all at the same time as finding yourself. Friendships can be a tricky thing after leaving a cult. This week some of the Cult Hacker Patreon supporters join Celine and Stephen on a panel of former Jehovah's Witnesses, to explore the process of finding and making friendships outside a high-control group. Maryann, Regina, Vincent, Tanya, Riley from the Jexit Channel and Scott from Witness Underground, discuss their own experiences of building a social world following isolation after leaving. They discuss their mistakes and lessons learned, and how they've come through the process. Christmas can also be a tricky time around friendships so the panel talk about their preferred way of either embracing it or escaping it. Creative expression is part of our human nature. When belonging to a high control group, one of the first things that is sacrificed is individuality, freedom of self expression, and education about the world outside of the group. Scott was always craving creativity, especially when it came to music. After breaking through the chains of Jehovah's Witness restrictions, he found continued solace in music. However, that came with the high cost of extreme shunning from his former friends and immediate family. Through his pain, he has created a beautiful documentary called Witness Underground, showcasing other musical artists and their journey to self discovery despite the shunning they all face.Click here to watch on YouTube Support Witness Undergroundhttps://www.witnessunderground.com/YouTube: @witnessundergroundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WitnessUnderground/IG: https://www.instagram.com/witnessunderground/Scott IG: https://www.instagram.com/scotthoman/Official Trailer: https://youtu.be/hW2vCu66Geg?si=LnWbGMqaT2n8mOoPClick below to learn about our C2C vacation! https://trovatrip.com/trip/central-america/costa-rica/costa-rica-with-shelise-sola-aug-2024Our Merch! In this episode, we speak with Director-Producer-Filmmaker-Podcaster-Writer-Cinematographer, Scott Homan. Scott was raised in the fiercely DIY "Northwoods" of Wisconsin deep in the wild of the Great Lakes region. His music community created Oh The Crib! records in a house in the forest as teenagers, where they recorded two albums while being influenced by a cult. He ran camera and sound for a local news station and then went to university for photography and digital media. Today he runs Banana Island Films, which was born in Hanoi, Vietnam during his five years there. He directed a music scene documentary, Hanoi Mixtape, which you can watch at HanoiMixtape.com. Witness Underground is his sophomore film and a much bigger project which includes the Witness Underground Podcast, a series, "XJW Coming Out," and an artist grant. His present projects all focus on artists escaping cults, especially musicians. The proceeds from watching Witness Underground on Patreon go towards fostering new healing art through an ex-cult-member artist grant program. In this episode, we discuss: 1) Scott embarked on a new career, moved to the other side of the planet for 5 years in Vietnam, rebuilt his sense of self, and gained the skills to tell a cult exit story in a unique way that they're all very proud of. 2) Scott's focus is to share the journey of what happens when people leave a cult, and how they now share their creative expression through their art and music. He openly shares this journey of creating community and humanizing the experience of life after the cult without the feelings of being re-traumatized. What's it like to doubt the beliefs of the strict religious community you grew up with? What's it like to leave? Where do you find the courage and strength to make that choice, and to adapt to your new life? Director Scott Homan and writer and musician Ryan Sutter have lived these questions, and collaborated to tell the story in the new documentary, Witness Underground. The film focuses on Ryan's love of music and the musical relationships within the Jehovah's Witness community that sustained him as a teen and gave him a safe place to land when he left. We talk about all these questions and the process of making the film, which is now running a Kickstarter to fund distribution to popular streaming services. In the folds of a seemingly regular family, Scott Homan's journey began. But little did he know what would unravel before his eyes. A battle between two opposing ideologies shaped his early years, but what he discovered went beyond mere disagreement. Brace yourself as the story unfolds, revealing the dark underbelly of a faith that demanded everything. And as the echoes of his past reverberate, Scott's quest for freedom and identity takes an unexpected turn. In this episode, you will be able to: Uncover personal stories about the transition from a Jehovah's Witness to awakening independence. Discover the underlying challenges faced by Jehovah's Witness artists after leaving the cult. Come face-to-face with the perils of cult dynamics and the ostracizing and shunning practices of Jehovah's Witnesses. Embark on a journey of self-discovery, rational thinking, and individual belief system development. My special guest is Scott Homan. Scott is an unconventional filmmaker with a unique route into the industry. Born and raised in the wild northwoods of Wisconsin, Scott originally immersed himself in the regional music scene before transitioning to local news production. Scott Homan, Director of the Ex-Jehovah's Witness documentary “Witness Underground”, and I discuss his history as a Witness, leaving and the documentary.
Nobody Asked Us To Do This. An Ex-Jehovah's Witness Podcast.
On this episode we discuss the film "Witness Underground". The film's director Scott Homan and featured cast member Ryan Sutter joins us in a great conversation about the film and their involvement with the Jehovah's Witness religion. The conversation is followed by commentary by the hosts after watching the film at the NYC Independent Film Festival.
Ben Reiser and Pauline Lampert talk to Scott Homan & James Zimmerman about WITNESS UNDERGROUND. Punk rock, B-movies, and Jehovah’s Witnesses unite in this heartfelt documentary. As members of Jehovah’s Witness start to explore culture outside of their religion, they have to wrestle with the possibility of being excommunicated from friends and family. Featuring in-depth interviews and extensive home video footage, Witness Underground tells the story of punk rocker Witnesses pushing against the highly controlling Jehovah’s Witnesses religion as they build their own community through music and art. This prolific community of Witness musicians create their own record label (Nuclear Gopher), and become early adopters of promoting their music through the internet, including what may have been the first album to ever be livestreamed. This community’s history is well documented through archival footage of their home movies and self-produced music videos, all with a very charming energy. Featuring music from Witnesses and ex-Witnesses, Witness Underground is a heartfelt documentary about the families and communities we are born into, as well as the ones we choose while celebrating the healing power of punk rock.
