I think it (along with the rest of the GameCube wrestling games) get overshadowed by the SmackDown series, but if you grew up playing the N64 holy grail titles, you have to play this one. Day of Reckoning's controls feel like the next-step from games like WCW/nWo Revenge and WWF No Mercy. Simple enough for anyone to pick up, but there's enough depth there for us die-hards to really sink our teeth into. Add in a decent roster and a solid career mode, and you have all the ingredients for at LEAST a four-star match. My guest this week is the official referee of RTG, Mike The Ref. We both love wrestling, love wrestling games, and really like Day of Reckoning. Some minor gripes and I explain why I prefer SmackDown, but all in all DoR is a must-play for any Ruthless Aggression era junkies. And before we ring the bell, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks bout the logic behind our scoring system. How do I feel about Wreck-It Ralph? And I give some one-handed game suggestions to a hot dog with a bad wing. Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 old-school wrasslin' games: WWF Attitude, ECW Hardcore Revolution, and WCW Mayhem. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Text us and say hello! After a brief hiatus thanks to flu season running wild, Lou and I are back—and this time, we're getting EXTREME for episode 38! This week, we're talking ECW Hardcore Revolution on PS1, N64, and Dreamcast, which dropped 25 years ago this month (feeling old yet?).At its core, this game is basically a reskinned version of WWF Attitude, but the raw, chaotic energy of ECW gives it a unique charm that makes it more than just a clone. Lou, a huge ECW fan, shares his early memories of playing this game and how hyped he was to finally get a wrestling game based on his favorite promotion. From the over-the-top violence to the brutal difficulty, we break down what worked, what didn't, and whether this game still holds up today. Grab a steel chair and join us for this trip down extreme memory lane!Support the showWe've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)
PROMOTION WARS The Monday Night War[1][2][3][4] or the Monday Night Wars, was an era of mainstream televised American professional wrestling, from September 4, 1995 to March 26, 2001, in which the World Wrestling Federation's (WWF; now WWE) Monday Night Raw (later Raw Is War) and World Championship Wrestling's (WCW) Monday Nitro were broadcast opposite each other in a battle for Nielsen ratings each week. It largely overlapped with the Attitude Era, a period in which the WWF used the term "WWF Attitude" to describe its programming from November 9, 1997 to May 6, 2002. The rating war was part of a larger overall struggle between the WWF and WCW, originating in personal animosity between respective owners Vince McMahon and Ted Turner. The rivalry steadily escalated throughout the 1990s to include the use of cutthroat tactics and the defections of employees between the two promotions. Throughout the war, the WWF and WCW would both adopt different concepts and narrative techniques. Meanwhile, both companies would establish both formal and informal partnerships with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), with ECW performers either appearing on WWF and WCW shows while still under contract, or outright leaving ECW to work for one of the other two companies. While WCW was the dominant promotion for much of the mid-1990s, a variety of factors coalesced to turn the tide in the WWF's favor at the end of the decade, including a radical rebranding of their formerly family-friendly product into highly sexualized and violent shows geared towards older teens and adults. WCW ultimately ran into financial difficulties as a result of the amount of money they had promised wrestlers during a hiring binge in the early and middle part of the decade, which had been aimed at acquiring large portions of the WWF's talent roster. Behind the scenes, executives who had longed to see WCW removed from the Turner organization were eventually able to see it come to fruition after Turner Broadcasting's merger with Time Warner and their merger with America Online (AOL). With Turner no longer in control, corporate executives of the combined AOL Time Warner sold WCW's assets. Despite efforts to salvage the company, it was ultimately sold to McMahon, ending the Monday Night War. In retrospect, wrestling commentators have come to see the Monday Night War as a golden age of professional wrestling, along with the 1940s–1950s and 1980s booms, with the competition between the WWF and WCW bringing out their best quality product both in terms of creativity and the performances of their wrestlers.

Text us and say hello! The premiere episode of Generation 'S'! This podcast will be a journey through shared experiences of growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. Our journey begins with a topic near and dear to our heart, professional wrestling (more specifically, the boom period that happened in the late 90s in pro-wrestling). WWF or WCW? D-Generation X or the nWo? If you're a fan of pro-wrestling now, and grew up during this time period, chances are it's questions like these that you faced on a daily basis at school, on the playground at recess, or hanging out at a friend's house while you tried to decide between playing WWF Attitude or WCW Revenge on your Nintendo 64.So kick back, relax, and enjoy our experience with professional wrestling during the peak of the sport. Our first wrestling game of the show...and of course....it is a stinker. Well I think it is, I can imagine others would have a different opinion. WWF Attitude for the PlayStation1. Myself and Dan give this one an attempt for our sins.

The best wrestling game from the best wrestling era ever. As good as it gets for multi-player on the Nintendo 64. Tight controls, awesome gameplay, fantastic modes. This game is everything a pro wrestling video game should be. In fact, it's so good, we're doing a second episode about it. I knew we were going to continue our 'revisited' series after episode 200, and I also knew that WWF No Mercy was gonna be the next one we were going back to. I love this game so much, I could probably do a weekly show about it. My buddy Marc Majeau (who also co-hosts the outstanding MCTV podcast) makes his RTG debut this week, and we spent over an hour just marking out about ladder matches, the 3D, hitting opponents with a ring bell, and Scotty 2 Hotty's infamous worm (if you know, you know). And before we show little mercy, I serve up another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about the dude that bought $40,000 worth of Nintendo stock just to ask where the hell F-Zero is. What kind of screen do I play my retro games on? And was JBL a good WWE Champion? PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring 3 wrestling classics: WWF Attitude, WWF SmackDown, and WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game. Are you on social media? It's WrestleMania week! This is like the Stanley Cup Finals/World Series/Super Bowl for wrestling fans, so I figured it was the right time to jump back into the world of wrasslin' video games. We've already covered the iconic WWF: No Mercy, and it's dimwitted cousin WWF Attitude. This week, we leaping forward to the Playstation 2 and another of the most beloved wrestling games of all-time; WWE SmackDown! Here Comes The Pain... Featuring the cover athlete BROOOOOCCKKKK.....LESSSSSSNAAAAARRRRRR! (That's for you current WWE fans) I won't lie, my heart belongs to the Nintendo 64 when it comes to wrestling games. Not just No Mercy, either. All the THQ games from that system (going back as far as WCW World Tour), stole countless hours from my childhood. They may not have had the deepest career modes of all-time, but the controls were perfect, and the multiplayer was legendary. I loved those games. I bought the first couple SmackDown! titles when they released on the original PlayStation, but they didn't hook me in the same way. Once the SmackDown series made it's leap to the PlayStation 2, it really hit it's stride. Shut Your Mouth was pretty good, but Here Comes the Pain is - in my opinion - the definitive title of the PS2, the SmackDown series, and early 2000's pro wrestling. It really played a big role in shifting the wrestling video game genre toward a more simulation style game, being able to work on specific body parts during a match and seeing the damage that has been done to each leg, arm, etc. It pumped steroids into the THQ grapple engine everyone knew and loved. It really took the gameplay to the next level, and aside from the obvious graphical enhancements, I remember this feeling like the first game that was taking full advantage of a more powerful console (the PS2 as opposed to the original PlayStation). I love the career mode in this game, too. I like the tight menu, no walking around. You pick what you want to do between matches, and it happens. Its the KISS method - Keep It Simple, Stupid. It also introduced the Elimination Chamber to video games, and I found that as fun as I did ladder matches when they were first introduced back in WWF No Mercy. It was the first time bra and panties matches were playable too, but, yeah... It has a great roster, plucked from a great time in pro wrestling. Tight controls, great graphics, fun career mode, Here Comes The Pain checks all the right boxes. I haven't played it in a long time, but doing a little homework for this episode brought back a lot of great memories. This is unquestionably one of the crown jewels of the wrestling video game library, and my buddy Andre joined me this week to help explain why. Enjoy the podcast, and enjoy WrestleMania, fellow nerds. It's still real to me dammit.
Pro wrestling is probably the only thing on the planet on par with retro video games when it comes to making me feel nostalgic. Being a teenager during the Monday Night Wars and the Attitude Era was something special. If you liked wrestling in those days (and who didn't?), you know what I'm saying. Combine the Attitude Era with the Playstation and the Nintendo 64, and you have nostalgia overload. Enter WWF Attitude. When people talk wrestling games from the 90's and early 2000's, the instant focus falls on THQ. WCW/nWo Revenge, Wrestlemania 2000, and of course, WWF No Mercy are all absolutely incredible. But before the WWF got in bed with THQ, Akklaim was in charge of bringing Stone Cold and friends into the world of video games. And while WWF Attitude doesn't have anything close to the legacy WWF No Mercy (or even SmackDown does), it doesn't deserve to be overlooked like it usually is. A lot of features that are common place in wrestling games today began with WWF Attitude. Things like super deep rosters, in depth create a wrestler, and even the ability to create an event all started with this game. While the THQ titles were taking the game in an "easy to approach and simple to control" direction, Akklaim focused on trying to make their wrestling games a more complicated, simulation type of experience. And while it's easy to look back on some of their decisions and laugh - and believe me, we do on the podcast this week - I think the powers that be behind this game deserve a little bit of credit for trying something different. It may not have worked all that well, but they helped lay the groundwork for what wrestling games would become. My guest this week is fellow wrestling nerd and podcast host Kyle Shaw, and we had a great time sharing stories about not only playing video games, but watching wrestling as well. Enjoy the podcast!
Everyone remembers the late 90s. Even those who weren't born then! FHM, WWF Attitude, N64s, Michael Owen, and, according to this film, 27-a-side games of basketball and extremely impressive virtual reality systems that can create the real-life embodiment of your dream man. Have Michael, Lorcan, and Thom uncovered a hidden romcom classic? At least one of us may think so. Andrew takes a look at some of the custom themes from the 1999 game WWF Attitude! It's a wacky solo romp featuring stereotypical music, songs that just sound pretty cool, and some downright bizarre tracks to say the least. It's an honor this episode, to spend an hour speaking with former top guy in WWF/WWE creative and former VP of talent and programming in TNA, Bruce "Brother Love" Prichard. Coming up on January 25th at 1 PM at Dave & Buster's in Philadelphia, Mr. Prichard will come face to face with former WCW President, Eric Bischoff, for a Monday Night Wars debate, in a room full of fans, moderated by none other than Chris Jericho! On tonight's episode, we focus on the Monday Night Wars, in the spirit of the upcoming debate. We discuss the night Nitro debuted and Lex Luger's jump to WCW, the early days of the NWO and the impact of Hulk Hogan's heel turn, and the Pillman-Austin gun angle (including a story Prichard has never told before!) From there we move on to the entry of Vince Russo into McMahon's inner circle, whether or not Prichard feels the criticism Russo feels is fair, and of course we talk about the Montreal Screwjob. Does Bruce think Vince was justified? We move onto some of the bigger moments of 1998, including Goldberg's WCW World Championship win over Hulk Hogan, and WCW's big signing of The Ultimate Warrior. Did either event worry the WWF? We wrap up with some discussion as to whether or not the jump of Russo & Ferrara concerned the WWF braintrust, how the closure of WCW and the subsequent purchase by the WWF has affected the business to this day, and whether or not Paul Heyman's claims of ECW's influence on WWF Attitude are true or exaggerated...all this and more! Please visit RFVideo.com for more information on the Bischoff-Prichard Monday Night Wars debate, moderated by Chris Jericho! Tickets for the debate, and meet and greets with all the participants are available!

Find out the shocking truth about what the Undertaker does when he's not in the ring! We wrap up with some discussion on wrestling video games because, hey, we're a video game podcast!
