I had artist Mark Bowles on the podcast today via zoom. One interesting component of doing this podcast is that I never really know what I'm going to learn about my guests. That's one of the reasons I like doing them so much. You know, the discovery aspect of it all. In this episode, Mark and I went down some of the deeper, darker holes of life. Things like how the way a parent treats you can effect your life tremendously. In this case, we learn that Mark had a very tough father.Sometimes it's hard  to go there (especially publicly) and sometimes you don't want to share those kinds of things, but when you do, it really gives those who know you perspective. They get a sense of what makes you who you are as a person and when you're an artist, it shows people how those experiences inform your creativity. And so Mark was really straightforward in sharing these details of his life. What he's had to overcome while maintaining such a unique and successful painting career. He's a really great artist and I've always loved his stuff which is evident in the fact I've represented him for almost 20 years.Enjoy. Mark Bowles on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 174.

In this episode, Alan Sanders and Walt Murray chat with cowboy historian, performer and artist, Jim Dunham. Jim joined us back in season two as an Old West expert to help with with five episodes of Blazing Saddles. This time we wanted to get his history. Jim Dunham first became fascinated by the Old West after watching the Davy Crocket Show on The Wonderful World of Disney. The show led him to the library to read more about him and other characters from the West. By the time he was in college, he was taking acting classes and learning how to speed-draw and do gun tricks. Jim loved to learn the history of the West and soon found a job at 20th Century Fox studios performing in a Wild West Show. His career was growing when he was called to serve in the Army for a time. When he finished his service, he tried to get back into the film industry, but wasn't making any in-roads. He created a one-man show, performing all over the United States. Along the way, he would help actors with proper gun techniques. He also made himself available to help with Western screenplays. One of those just happened to be for the film, Tombstone, by Kevin Jarre. Tombstone, though still not entirely accurate, may be the closest we can get to the events leading up to and after the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The Booth Western Art Museum Jim found his way to NW Georgia, getting hired as a special projects manager at the Booth Western Art Museum. The museum is a world-class, Smithsonian affiliate. In 2020 and 2021, it was listed as the number one art museum in the United States according to a USA Today Reader's poll. While continuing to work at the museum, Jim created a 30 minute show, recreating the OK Corral gunfight every October during the Cowboy festival. Jim still loves to tell stories, even if his draw is getting slower. At the age of 78, he still loves to entertain an audience and hopes to keep doing so for years to come. Jim can be heard every Tuesday morning at 8:40AM on WBHF radio hosting a segment called, "Stories That Won the West." After Jim's interview, Alan and Walt talked about movies for a few minutes before diving into their odd news segment. They then ended with the entertainment segment, where they discussed what they have been watching, reading and listening to. WATCHING Walt started to dive into season 3 of Lost in Space. Alan has not seen any prior seasons to which Walt told him to stop watching anything else and catch up with the show. Alan watched episode 4 of The Wheel of Time and admits he may not watch too many more if it doesn't get better. He re-watched WandaVision with his daughter and still thinks it's been the best MCU extension for the small screen. Alan also gave two thumbs up for the first two episodes of Hawkeye to drop on Disney+. He and his wife watched the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th Street and went to the theater to see Ghostbusters Afterlife. Alan liked it, but said it wasn't as good as the first Ghostbusters movie, but far better than the sequel. As to YouTube, he suggests Ashleigh Burton, Popcorn in Bed and his newest wormhole discovery, The TRY Channel. That last one is basically Irish people simply sampling foods or beverages and reacting. READING Walt is still trying to finish, "Killing the Mob," and Alan is still trying to finish, "Dune." LISTENING Walt has started to listen to The Clip Out, a podcast by two Peloton users. He also loves the podcasts Holy Crap It's Sports with Pete Davis, The Murdaugh Murders and Radio Labyrinth. Alan reminds everyone about a new podcast called The Time Bandits Minute where he was a recent guest for minutes 4, 5 and 6. Other than that, he has been listening to Christmas music. Dennis shares his experiences creating event posters. ... A native San Franciscan, Dennis graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California College of the Arts. His knack for composition paired with his eye for color gave him a distinctive look and he was able to establish himself as an illustrator in San Francisco. Wanting to explore more opportunities as an illustrator, he moved to New York in 1980. While there, he flourished as an artist, which eventually led him to a successful career as one of the nation's top illustrators. His compelling poster images include the NFL Super Bowl XXIX and the 2006 Kentucky Derby. His paintings were featured on many well-known book covers including, the Tales of the City series by Armisted Maupin, and several covers for authors Elmore Leonard and James Lee Burke. Dennis was the featured cover artist for Hemispheres, United Airlines in-flight magazine, the National Lampoon and, more recently, Western Art Collector, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, and the Jackson Hole Traveler. Dennis' strong and richly colored images borrow much of their inspiration from early 20th century paintings and posters. His early influences, J.C. Leyendecker, N.C. Wyeth, Ludwig Hohlwein and Tom Purvis, were all master designers in composition. The demands of illustration and poster design, with its simplified, sculpturally rendered images gave Dennis the discipline and draftsmanship that gives strength to his paintings today. Dennis is not only an artist, but has taught at the California College of the Arts, the Academy of Art in San Francisco, as well as Syracuse University in New York. In 1986 he returned to his roots in California, bought property, and settled in the Sonoma wine country. About this time, Dennis turned his attention to fine art, when continuous requests of his original images were made and private paintings were commissioned. For the last 30 years, Dennis has been painting in oils for his galleries and private clients. Dennis' work is in the permanent collections of the Tucson Museum of Art, Bakersfield Museum of Art, the Booth Western Art Museum, Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West, and the Whitney Western Art Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray sit down with Tom Shinall, the Business Development Manager for the new Savoy Automobile Museum. The museum is slated to open in Fall of 2021 and will be a world class automotive museum. Tom Shinall talks with us extensively about the research they did first. Many car museums are someone's collection. After seeing it a few times, there isn't anything new. Savoy will plan to have rotating galleries to always have fresh and new themed exhibits. But, that is just on the inside. The car culture is so pervasive, there are tens of thousands of car clubs. The grounds of Savoy can hold up to 1000 vehicles for massive car shows to take place outside. The museum is under the same management group that owns the Booth Western Art Museum and Tellus Science Museum. Both are Smithsonian affiliates and are world class museums themselves. As we wind down our museum discussion, we talk about our first cars and what car we would like to own today if money were no object. Alan then throws in a curve about favorite Hollywood car each would like to own. The hosts then get Tom to go through some of his background and how he went from a broadcast journalism degree to business development manager for a new museum. The show then moves onto a horrible movie Walt was forced to watch and review. Afterwards, they each bring out a pair of crazy news stories to share with the audience. The show then winds down with the entertainment segment. WATCHING Walt found the Tubi App and then watched the documentary series, The Fighting Season. It's a show from Rick Schroeder, documenting our fighting troops in the Middle East. Alan is closing in on the end of season one of classic Star Trek. The two episodes he most liked in the last week were Space Seed, with Ricardo Montalban, and Errand of Mercy, with John Colicos. READING Walt is still reading, "Running with the Devil." Alan ran across a blog post entitled, "The 25 Conversation Starters for Married Couples,' as part of his research for a different podcast. LISTENING Walt reminds us all we should be subscribed and listening to Radio Labyrinth. He also really likes, Holy Crap It's Sports with Pete Davis. We are talking about these things almost exclusively in terms of Van Gogh’s life, so if you’re familiar and comfortable with those (sometimes gorey) details, you will likely not be bothered by this conversation. We also talk some about sex workers, but not really about sex work. Today I'm talking with Nicolette Paglioni about the stylistic masterwork that is Loving Vincent, the 2017 film where every frame is hand-painted. It's a masterful film about the life and death (mostly death) of Vincent Van Gogh, and if you ever wanted to know something about the man Nicolette will be happy to share it with you. We talk about many nuances of his life, the wonder of animation and rotoscoping, making art, and mental illness. There's also more to the video version this week, as it features paintings by Van Gogh that Nicolette touches on that are not heavily featured in this podcast, seeing as it's an audio medium. One of the originators of the Western Pop Art movement, Billy Schenck incorporates techniques from Photorealism with a Pop Art sensibility to both exalt and poke fun at images of the West. Schenck is known for utilizing cinematic imagery reproduced in a flattened, reductivist style, where colors are displayed side-by-side rather than blended or shadowed. In the August 2014 issue of SouthwestArt magazine, his work was described as “a stance … a pendulum between the romantic and the irreverent.” Schenck’s artwork is now in 48 museum collections, including Smithsonian Institution, Denver Art Museum, The Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Booth Western Art Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, the Mesa Southwest Museum, Museum of the Southwest, Midland TX, Albuquerque Fine Arts Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Art. Private collections include the estate of Malcolm Forbes, Laurance Rockefeller, the estate of Fritz Scholder, and Sylvester Stallone. Corporate collections include American Airlines, IBM, Sony, and Saatchi & Saatchi. With over 100 solo shows in the U.S. and Europe, career highlights include the Denver Art Museum’s 2011 Western Horizons, the 2013 Utah Museum of Fine Art’s exhibit Bierstadt to Warhol: American Indians in the West, and Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition, at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles. TJ Cunningham grew up in Vermont in an area that was also a favorite place for Aldro Hibbard and Emile Gruppé to paint. If you have ever visited that part of Vermont as my wife and I did a few years ago, you probably call to mind the beautiful hills, mountains, woods, and streams. And nestled snuggly in that beautiful setting are the small farms graced with red barns and cozy homes that beckon to a simpler time. Just as Hibbard and Gruppé found inspiration among this landscape, so does TJ Cunningham. Though he no longer lives in Vermont, the intense desire to capture the beauty of the landscape continues to burn in his heart. I first met TJ Cunningham back in January of this year at the Booth Western Art Museum. He was one of the exhibiting artists of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast that was on display at that time at the Booth. On exhibit there was a hauntingly beautiful and moody painting by Cunningham called Near the Beaver Pond. On seeing that one painting, I knew I had to meet TJ and eventually have him on the Artful Painter. In this edition of the Artful Painter, TJ talks about what he drawn to paint, the importance of preparation before painting, and the unique tools and materials he uses. He discusses how outdoor painting is part of the preparation process. We also talk about his transition from gallery representation to his now being 100% self-representing in his home studio and his beautiful website. TJ was featured in the September 2014 issue of Southwest Art magazine in the series 21 Under 31: Young Artists to Watch in 2014. How true that admonition was, for today TJ’s paintings are an impressionistic tour-de-force. When you examine his paintings up close, you get a sense that TJ relishes not only a beautiful scene, but also the act of making the painting. In many ways looking at the surface of his paintings it’s not clear just how he made those gorgeous marks and textures. Using a variety of mark-making tools, he leaves a compelling mystery for the viewer to ponder. Each painting by TJ Cunningham exudes the wonder of being in the landscape. We begin today's episode with a fade in to a day in the life of Rock Ridge. We also get the Ballad of Rock Ridge being sung to help advance the story. We get a kind of montage sequence to go along with the lyrics being sung about the town. The discussion moves to how each movie studio had their own Western town set for filming Westerns, but they were only shallow facades. Once an actor steps inside a building they would then move to a sound stage for interiors. While discussing the inside shots, we learn the bar, though decorated appropriately, is too big for what would have been typical for a Western town at this time. Moreover, cattle would not have been allowed and the idea that Anal Johnson kept things nice and clean by spitting into the cups is absurd and hysterical. By the end of the minute, Taggart and his ruffians begin working their number six on the good people of Rock Ridge. We have two special guests today. Early in his career, Andrew strove to create quality paintings. In order to do that, he felt the need to work out a methodology to produce consistent quality. He became obsessed with the process of painting. Andrew likens his obsession to surfers who go around the world searching to catch the perfect wave. He is addicted to the search and the chase of an idea for a painting, and he is addicted to the feeling of making the best painting possible. This episode clocks in at over two hours long. Andrew does not hold back! He explains where his ideas for a painting comes from and how he develops that idea. Andrews shares three questions all artists should ask when developing an idea. He says these questions have transformed his career as an artist. Though Andrew achieve early financial success as a professional artist - like a lot of artists he was affected by the global downturn in the economy. That downturn taught him the importance of diversifying his sources of income and in this episode he explains how he has accomplished that. THURS OCT 19th NOON CDT on EQUESTRIAN LEGACY RADIO We welcome award winning singer/songwriter Almeda Bradshaw to this weeks CAMPFIRE CAFE. Almeda grew up listening to her dad's lp collection of big bands, the Boston Pops and classical orchestra music until an eye-opening epiphany happened while watching the Beatles' American debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. Though classically trained through college on piano and cello, her musical alter-ego was fed through the guitar which she taught herself to play at age thirteen. It was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Circle" album that turned her on to the flat picking style of Mother Maybelle Carter. Though covers of Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell,  Fleetwood Mac and other songs of great  artists from the 60s and 70s took over her teenage years, Almeda later returned to the heart of her musical soul in Western Americana/Roots Music, an eclectic mix of cowboy, bluegrass, old-time, folk and spirituals. There she remains. Tom Shinall Director of Marketing with the Booth Western Art Museum joins us to talk about their upcoming Cowboy Festival & Symposium. Today, I'm thrilled to get to interview my favorite artist, Carrie Fell on Extraordinary Women Radio! I love, love, love her and and her work! You'll love her great wisdom that she shares on engaging your creativity, on following your dreams, on stepping into your cowgirl courage! We talk about the importance of getting into the flow in our life - both going up stream and down stream - and where we can often find the magic in the contrast! As Carrie says, "This is where the essence is - in the work!" Carrie shares her secrets about playing with our inner critic and how to tame her! Carrie’s artwork depicts the traditional icons of the Western landscape with a thoroughly modern twist using vibrant colors and fluid forms.  Her work is free spirited – her paintings and designs offer a sophisticated, yet fresh, style that appeals to the maverick within each of us – and certainly within me! Her work is the New West – her work is the west as a “state of mind” – a place of change with an attitude of boldness.  So you can see why she belongs here on Extraordinary Women Radio… Her work has been acquired to be part of the permanent collection at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia and the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg In 2015, Carrie was selected as the Official Artist for the FIS Downhill Alpine World Ski Championships held in Colorado – where she created a collection of colorful, bold skier images which were displayed and utilized to market the entire event and resulted in a monumental installation at the base of Beaver Creek, CO. Her work has been shared around the world, and graces several walls of my own house. Let’s meet Carrie Fell! For more about Carrie visit her website at http://carriefellgallery.com/.
