The highly anticipated Panasonic GH5 has generated a soap opera of epic proportions. While an outstanding 4K video camera, the GH5's sub-par implementation of continuous autofocus and wonky image stabilization has many video pros very much consternated. In this episode I talk about these issues and give you my take on the drama surrounding the GH5. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 7+ and it got me thinking again about something Chris Fenwick had said in an earlier episode of this podcast - back when it was known as the DCP. DCP 212: Where Do Creative Ideas Come From?

Artful Camera

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 27, 2016 77:03

This year I’ve published 31 episodes of the Digital Convergence Podcast. If there is anything to be learned from these podcast episodes this year it’s that gear will only get you so far. Most cameras made today are good–even the iPhone in your pocket. Video editor Chris Fenwick called the iPhone a “studio in our hands.” With such power and quality available to us, there’s no reason to agonize over what camera to buy. In essence, there’s nothing left to pixel peep because all pixels are pretty good.  So now that we’ve got gear angst out of the way, in 2017 and beyond, we can move on and focus on creating. You are first and foremost a creative.  Imagination trumps gear.  The creative process begins with an idea. Where do creative ideas come from? In this last episode of 2016, I explore this question and examine the creative process through a series of interview clips that feature filmmaker and director David Lynch, actor and comedian Gene Wilder, director and explorer James Cameron, composer and performer Yanni, musician and founder of The Black Eyed Peas will.i.am, producer and musician Brian Eno, and author, lecturer, and education expert Sir Ken Robinson. Their thoughts on where creative ideas originate, the creative process, creative failure, and overcoming creative discouragement will inspire you to expand your creative horizons no matter what your situation is in life, or the gear and software you have, in the year ahead.  Please support our show sponsors:  Get your yearly subscription to the VideoBlocks + AudioBlocks bundle today for only $149 here: http://videoblocks.com/digital2016  CrumplePop - Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X Plugins: http://crumplepop.com  Mentioned in the show:  Interviews on Creativity:  Hitchcock's Definition of Happiness: https://youtu.be/14dOICbwSIs  Gene Wilder on Creativity (from CTForum.org) https://youtu.be/4gG3ludjkMs  James Cameron Interview on Creativity | Montréal 2014: https://youtu.be/duEyYGqWFt8  Yanni: Illustrating the Creative Process: https://youtu.be/xQJ21n9LDHo  will.i.am on Creativity | American Genius (from National Geographic): https://youtu.be/yEnVShUZXks  Brian Eno by Alfred Dunhill: https://youtu.be/5mqtc2Z3K8o  Brian Eno & Steven Johnson On Art (from How We Get To Next): https://youtu.be/RMU5nhpb4LE  Sir Ken Robinson on creativity and education: https://youtu.be/fKaGExyFOR0  Steve Johnson’s How We Get To Next: https://howwegettonext.com  The amazing people featured on Digital Convergence Podcast in 2016:  Filmmakers:  Justin DeMers and Ray Tsang: DCP 185: Team of One Filmmaking with Justin DeMers and Ray Tsang: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-185-team-of-one-filmmaking-with-justin-demers-and-ray-tsang  Rick Delgado: DCP 188: Director and Cinematographer Rick Delgado: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-188-director-and-cinematographer-rick-delgado  Cinzia Angelini: DCP 190: Mila Film Writer and Director Cinzia Angelini and Producer Andrea Emmes: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-190-mila-film-writer-and-director-cinzia-angelini-and-producer-andrea-emmes  Jason Amm: DCP 191: Jason Amm - Producer of Electronic Voyager: Retracing Bob Moog's Sonic Journey: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-191-jason-amm-producer-of-electronic-voyager-retracing-bob-moogs-sonic-journey  Mathew Farrell: DCP 193: The Karakoram Anomaly - With Mathew Farrell: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-193-the-karakoram-anomaly-with-mathew-farrell  Tom Bryan: DCP 202: Tom Bryan's The Casey Neistat School of Filmmaking: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-202-tom-bryans-the-casey-neistat-school-of-filmmaking  Ken Bell: DCP 206: Kenn Bell - Director of Second Chance Dogs: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-206-kenn-bell-director-of-second-chance-dogs  Entrepreneurs:  Soundstripe: DCP 189: Soundstripe Co-Founder Micah Sannan: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-189-soundstripe-co-founder-micah-sannan  Jason Been: DCP 192: Jason Been - Imagecraft Productions: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-192-jason-been-imagecraft-productions  Dylan Higginbotham: DCP 207: Dylan Higginbotham - Founder of Stupid Raisins and Creator of FCP X Plugins: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-207-dylan-higginbotham-founder-of-stupid-raisins-and-creator-of-fcp-x-plugins Brent Barbano of Sharegrid: DCP 196: Am I Getting Paid Enough? - Part 3: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-196-am-i-getting-paid-enough-part-3 Mentors: Dave Dugdale: DCP 203: Dave Dugdale on Sony and Canon: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-203-dave-dugdale-on-sony-and-canon  Caleb Pike: DCP 204: Caleb Pike Builds a Hackintosh for FCP X: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-204-caleb-pike-builds-a-hackintosh-for-fcp-x  Kris Simmons: DCP 194: Am I Getting Paid Enough? Last month I had a great conversation with 30+ year editing and producing veteran Chris Fenwick about what it takes to make it in this business. He used the analogy of "standing on a chair" to make a point. In the context of that conversation was his commentary about a female assistant editor in Hollywood who as featured in the second installment of our Breaking the Glass docu-film series. The editor, Christine Haslett, shared frustrations about not advancing as far as she would've liked in her field. JD heard Chris' commentary on her situation and felt in the context of Christine, the "stand on a chair" analogy was not only way off the mark, but he felt it also sabotaged the very message "Breaking the Glass" series is trying to convey. As he put it, "He wanted to knock the guy over who was standing in the chair" (albeit, the way he described it was a tad more, um, colorful. :)This is an episode that will make you laugh and/or get pissed (I'm sure you'll get mad at somebody in this episode). On last week's season 2 premiere of Radio Film School, 30+ year editing and producing veteran Chris Fenwick provided some great perspective. But during my conversation with him, we talked about a number of things. One of them was his comment made about the second installment of our "Breaking the Glass" docu-film series wherein animation editor Christine Haslett shared frustrations about not advancing as far as she would've liked in her field. Chris' commentary on her situation is the impetus for today's discussion. After the credits, there's a fun preview of our brand new podcast about HBO's hit new series "Westworld." Dave Dugdale of LearningVideo.com and Chris Fenwick of Slice Editorial join me today to talk about Sony’s new cameras - the a6500, a99, and the R100 Mark IV. But this is not just a gear chat, we talk about our philosophy of buying gear - when we do and when we don't, and why. Does buying a better camera really make us better storytellers? It depends. Of course, it was inevitable that we talk about Canon - who Dave famously dumped and switched to Sony. Of course, there’s a lot more in this lively conversation. Last week Chris Fenwick and I explored scene by scene Casey Neistat’s video: The Casey Neistat’s Guide to Filmmaking. In that episode, Chris referenced a hilarious video created by London-based director and filmmaker Tom Bryan. Tom’s film is called "The Casey Neistat School of Filmmaking." Tom Bryan's real passion - though already an accomplished corporate video producer - is to create drama oriented films. The Casey Neistat School of Filmmaking - self-funded and created with an all volunteer crew - is the first in a series of several narrative films Tom has set out to create this year. Watching this short film, it’s obvious he is off to an amazing start. Tom is a filmmaker to watch! I know a lot of folks - especially filmmakers - don’t get the Neistat phenomena. However, is there anything we can learn from the Neistat experience? Chris Fenwick returns to this episode to join my conversation with Tom Bryan to discuss this topic and answer that question. A DCP listener posed this scenario to Chris Fenwick and I just before we recorded episode 187 of the Digital Convergence Podcast: "I was in a production company last week and most people were under 30. All but one was under 40. What’s the key to longevity in the business?” It’s a great question. I’m not sure we directly answered the question in this episode, but we did have a lot to say about how our attitude makes a difference as we get older and help us "stay in the business." Prior to pressing the record button for this episode, I watched a poignant video that Chris just completed for a memorial service for a dear friend of his who had recently passed away. Chris explains how he put together a moving video tribute to a friend. Talk about embracing and learning something new… Chris talks about why he decided to get a new DJI Phantom 4. Many filmmakers can recall a pivotal feature film they watched that caused them to say, "I want to make a movie." For some, it may have been Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odessey. For others, it may have been the summer of 1977's premiere of George Lucas' Star Wars. For our special guest on the Digital Convergence Podcast, Mike Carroll, it was Dvaid Lean's Lawrence of Arabia. Mike Carroll has long desired to make feature length films - not shorts - and to date has three feature length movies in distribution. Each movie was made on a small budget. Not only has Mike directed three feature films of his own, he is the author of two books. His first book, Naked Filmmaking: How To Make A Feature-Length Film - Without A Crew - For $10,000 Or Less, chronicles in depth his journey to make feature length movies with minimal gear and very little money. One reviewer says this about Mike's book: "Carroll walks us through the joyful but often tedious and gut-wrenching process of one-man filmmaking every step of the way, giving detail after detail. In this special edition of the Digital Convergence Podcast, we leave behind gear talk. Chris Fenwickdelves deep into the mind and vision of Po Chan - a remarkable visual story teller and artist. Po Chan wrote and directed The Ticket and The Last Three Minutes - both films that were shot byShane Hurlbut of Hurlbut Visuals. Behind every great film is a great story. From where do those stories come from? How do stories make the transition to the medium of film? How is editing more than just "cutting"? What role does a colorist play in evoking emotion and meaning? How does a director bring the story to life and propel it forward by means of camera position and moves? What role does light play in breathing life into the film? This interview of Po Chan by Chris Fenwick provides insight and commentary on these questions. You will enjoy the scene by scene breakdown by Po Chan as she explains her thinking - why it was framed, lit, shot, edited and graded as it was.

Chris, too, has been working on editing some BTS footage for a recent Shane Hurlbut commercial shoot. In this episode, I lose any chance I could have ever had at being invited to an Apple event. Our banter migrates over to the controversial question "Is HDSLR video dead?" In the interview segement, I talk with Tara Oldfield and Jason DeRose of Novacut. Jason and Tara are developing a free video editor that allows artists to collaborate over the internet and harness cheap cloud computing. The Novacut editor is aimed at professional-grade TV and movie production using HDSLR cameras (like the 5D Mark II). These cameras have drastically lowered production costs, but we want to reduce costs even further... so they are taking the lean, distributed workflow perfected by the open-source community, and bringing it to video. Distributed teams are a big part of what has allowed open-source to amazingly produce better software, yet for less money and in less time. The Novacut team feels they can do the same for video. Tara and Jason want to see an explosion of financially viable independent TV shows distributed directly to fans over the Internet, funded through direct fan support, licensed under the Creative Commons.
