The Decisive Moment: From Lake Superior to the Sardine Run with Ian Plant In this episode of the Lakescape Photography Podcast, Nick sits down with photographer, educator, and author Ian Plant for a practical, field-focused conversation about decision-making in landscape photography. The real stuff that separates "pretty scenes" from photographs that actually stand on their own. Together, they break down what the decisive moment looks like in nature: recognizing visual energy, anticipating change, committing to a composition, and making confident choices when conditions are moving fast. From the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior to the chaos and intensity of the Sardine Run, Ian shares how to read a scene, simplify the noise, and build frames with intention. If you've ever come home with a full card and still felt like you missed something, this episode will help you slow down mentally, sharpen your instincts, and start making photographs that feel deliberate. What if you could retake your favorite memories years after they happened, fixing the lighting, catching the smile, or even opening your eyes?In this conversation, a16z General Partner Martin Casado and Partner Yoko Li sit down with scientist and Lytro founder Ren Ng along with Phota Labs cofounders Cecilia Zhang and Zhihao “Zach” Xia to explore the past, present, and future of computational photography. They trace the story from the invention of light-field cameras and the evolution of smartphone photography to today's AI powered retakes that preserve identity and context in ways filters never could. Together they reflect on how AI is changing what it means to capture a moment, why authenticity matters as much as aesthetics, and how the future of photography may no longer depend on a lens at all but on models that know you.Resources: Find Cecilia on GitHub: https://ceciliavision.github.io/Find Zach on GitHub: https://likesum.github.io/Find Ren on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/renngFind Yoko on X: https://x.com/stuffyokodrawsFind Martin on X: https://x.com/martin_casado Timecodes:00:00 The Decisive Moment in Photography00:33 Introduction to Computational Photography01:05 Personal Histories and Connections02:27 Evolution of Computational Photography04:15 The Birth of Light Field Photography07:28 From Hardware to Software Innovations08:52 Founding of Photo Labs11:10 Generative AI in Photography13:54 The Future of Photography14:47 Personalized Visual Gen AI16:27 User Reactions and Real-World Applications17:44 Technical Innovations and Challenges24:11 New Use Cases and Exciting Prospects25:34 The Essence of Slide Photography26:16 The Future of Photography: Generative AI28:58 Authenticity in Photography32:11 Generative AI and User Behavior34:39 The Impact of Generative AI on Photography37:02 The Evolution of Photography Styles46:20 The Future of Computational Photography Check out everything a16z is doing with artificial intelligence here, including articles, projects, and more podcasts. Christ the Fulfillment: St. Paul Proclaims the Past, and the Power of the Present The Church marks the midpoint of the Easter season and . . . . . . highlights a shift in the liturgical readings toward Jesus' teachings during the Last Supper. These teachings serve to deepen the understanding of the mysteries of Christ's death and resurrection. The Homily emphasizes that these events are not just historical but living realities made present through the liturgy, especially in the Mass. The Decisive Moment in History Saint Paul's speech in the synagogue, in the First Reading, underscores that the entire history of Israel . . . Abraham, Moses, David, the prophets . . . was not merely a buildup to Christ, but served the purpose of revealing Him. Paul proclaims that Jesus' resurrection is the decisive moment in history, fulfilling and surpassing all that came before. Jesus' act of washing the disciples' feet sets the tone for discipleship: humility, service, and fidelity. The Mass is emphasized as the place where Christ's sacrifice is made present, where believers physically engage with the saving mystery. The upcoming gospel are not just teachings but revelations that invite Christians to enter more deeply into the death and resurrection of Jesus . . . a reality proclaimed and professed in every Eucharist. Listen to: Christ the Fulfillment: St. Paul Proclaims the Past, and the Power of the Present ------------------------------------------------------------ A Quote from the Homily What a powerful statement that is. That the fulcrum of all of this, the point of all of this, the goal of those many centuries of history of that tortured relationship of Israel with its God, this history of faithfulness and unfaithfulness all comes down to this glorious point now where we see that God has indeed done something unexpected, something marvelous, something new. And so it is. Paul concludes his reflection with those words of John the Baptist. I am not the one. Nothing in the past is the one. There is one who is greater than I, and now Paul announces the one who is greater, the one who is greater than all of the others, is the one who has risen from the dead. The one who is greater, the one who is the reason for all of these other things. ------------------------------------------------------------ Christ the Savior with the Eucharist: Spanish Painter: Juan de Juanes: 1545 – 1550 This oil-based painting on wood is one of three parts. Dawn Walton, a human therapist, and Jess Probst, a dog behaviourist talk about the new Mali puppy that Jess has called Percival, and how he is already demonstrating behaviours that could lead to large problems once he's older, if you didn't have a knowledgeable owner. He's quite difference to the golden retriever puppies. We talk about the looking at the behaviour rather than using labels to set expectations, and providing alternative behaviour choices rather than just trying to control the dog. What is the intent behind the behaviour? We talk about the transformation in the owners who were on the most recent residential and how they were able to apply what they learnt to new owners with over-reactive dogs. We refer to "The Decisive Moment" by Jonah Lehrer and the Growth Mindset by Carol Dweck and how hard it is to get humans to recognise change. We need to redefine failure and focus more on the process and the progress. The war in Ukraine is entering a new and more dangerous phase in the wake of the overnight success of Kyiv's counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region. A string of major Russian military setbacks is feeding hopes for a once-unthinkable Ukrainian victory in the war. For his part, Putin is moving to formally annex the parts of Ukraine occupied by Russian forces and is inching closer toward full-scale military mobilization. Is the war in Ukraine at a tipping point? How vulnerable is Putin at home? How should the West respond to Putin's countermoves? And what are the long-term implications of Moscow's chronic underperformance on the battlefield? Aaron hosts Kadri Liik, Andrew Weiss, and Eugene Rumer to discuss the latest developments in Russia's war in Ukraine and where the conflict could go from here.Want to listen to Carnegie Connects live? Spirituality has the power to mean more than its Oxford Dictionary listing. It's an awareness of something outside the box of yourself, religion, tradition, and even medicine. The human spirit inhabits an energy that can be transformed throughout the day. The connection between mind, body, and soul is spirituality. And the power to feel gratitude in any given situation is an opportunity to experience it full-time. Hope VIII “The Decisive Moment”1.1Pe 4:1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,1Pe 4:2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.* The more you go through the more you should have a “don't quit now”* “Whoever has suffered for doing right, and has still gone on obeying God in spite of the suffering it involved, has made a clear break with sin.” (Grudem)2.1Pe 4:3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. You've already put in your time in that God-ignorant way of life, partying night after night, a drunken and profligate life. Now it's time to be done with it for good. MSG* Suffering always leads to a decisive moment* Your decisive moment can be your defining moment3.1Pe 4:4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 1Pe 4:5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.* There are people all around that do not make it through the suffering and will encourage you to give in as well.* Once again, the tension rises and a decisive moment is born.* Example- Marriage suffering and the bad advice from other sufferers. Conclusion:You have a choice. Live for you or Jesus. Live for them or Jesus. Live for it or Jesus. Its time to make your decisive moment your defining moment*Life Group Questions:*1. How does suffering cause you to be stronger in your fight against sin?2. Have you had to decide to move forward in a time of struggle when you did not want to? What caused you to move forward?3. Explain how your decisive moments can be you defining moments in your peronsal life.4. How have people treated you when you abstained from sin? Negative? Positive?5. What could Jesus have done to end His sfuffering on the cross? Did He? Should You?
