Van's channel has been my favorite thing on YouTube ever since its launch, which my friends can attest to as I've forced all of them to watch his content. Bert Kreisher is quoted as saying there's no one like Van in the world, and compared his level of genius to the likes of Dave Chapelle. It's hard to put Van Neistat in a box. He is what happens when poetry, philosophy, filmmaking, and craftsmanship intersect. Given the choice between a fully pimped out MacBook pro and a typewriter, he chooses the typewriter every time. He's a “repair it” instead of “replace it” sorta guy, and his hand made approach to life leaks into everything he does. He and his brother, Casey, wrote, directed, and starred in the HBO show, The Neistat Brothers. They started vlogging before vlogging was a thing. After their tv show, Casey and Van took separate paths. Casey went on to pioneer vlogging as we know it today YouTube, and Van continued to build his filmmaking career working on projects with the illustrious contemporary artist Tom Sachs. He also directed a feature film, and has worked on many other notable projects. One year ago, Van pulled back the curtain on his otherwise mostly private life, and launched his own YouTube channel, The Spirited Man. Casey introduced Van as his favorite YouTuber as Van does not watch YouTube, making his work one of a kind and original. Van has since gained millions of views, and coined a filmmaking style he calls the industrial essay film. His videos feel custom, explore a wide variety of profound life lessons, and have a way of unlocking the spiritedness most of us lose when we grow up.

Van Neistat is an artist, a filmmaker, a writer and now a YouTube Creator. Van's artistic career started when he began working with NYC contemporary artist, Tom Sachs. He and his brother Casey both worked for Sachs and soon after started creating films together that went viral before the term Viral even existed. They then developed a series of short films that they turned into a TV show that ended up getting picked up by HBO. When HBO didn't renew the series, Casey and Van split up, Casey turned to YouTube to start uploading videos and Van wanted to continue down the path of being a traditional filmmaker. Years later, Van has now turned to YouTube to distribute his work and launched a kickstarter which raised over $120,000 and helped bring his series, The Spirited Man, to life.

Today, there's a video camera in everyone's pocket. But long before we coined the term influencers there were just people with influence. Back in 2010, HBO decided to take a chance on two of them: The Neistat Brothers. Van and Casey Neistat once described their series that was picked up by HBO as "a handmade home movie TV show”. While the democratization of content is here and now, eclectic Van Neistat remains a master storyteller, talented artist and DIY movie maker. From my lens, he truly ranks as one of the most interesting minds in America. Our discussion spans far and wide including his current Youtube endeavor, "The Spirited Man”, his relationship with his brother Casey and a few of our life adventures that included his Baja motorcycle trek (where Van brought along two total strangers) to my wedding. Enjoy.

Van Neistat is an "influencer" and a regular guy. I draw inspiration from him. As a lover of poetry, writers, and long romantic scenes in movies... Kurt Vonnegut taught me in Player Piano that we are all trying to figure out what we are supposed to do, to be mindful of our own crap, and to be suspect of anyone who says they have all the answers. It's all a trap, it's all preposterous, and it's all futile in the end. But we can still try. We can still make mistakes and make art and make lovely things. Sometimes the imperfections in life are the prefect things we need. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/joshua-peek/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joshua-peek/support

For a certain generation, the name Casey Neistat might not ring any bells, but in the eyes of tens of millions of YouTube viewers he's more than an internet celebrity—he's a cultural icon. A tenth-grade dropout who once lived in a trailer park with his infant son and worked in the dish pits of a seafood restaurant, Neistat willed himself to becoming one of the most respected creators in the country. Despite having no formal education in filmmaking and limited access to cameras and equipment, he forged his own genre of visual storytelling that's helped democratize movie-making for an entire generation of creators. A recent Nantucket homeowner, Neistat spoke to host Robert Cocuzzo about his life on the island, his creative philosophy and what project he's working on next.

A mysterious artist on the cusp of breakthrough success walks away from it all. Beyond the public's gaze, he spends the next decade pursuing purity, beauty and truths both personal and universal. Then, like a Jedi returning from parts unknown, the artist resurfaces as ‘The Spirited Man'. And this ‘Spirited Man' goes by the name Van.Van Neistat to be precise. The elder half of The Neistat Brothers, it's a name that will ring familiar to many, a name typically associated with a superstar YouTuber, OG vlogger, and friend of the pod, Casey Neistat. In the Neistat Venn Diagram, Van and Casey overlap on many traits. Both are artists with an utterly distinct aesthetic. Both are exceptional filmmakers who honed their skills in the days before YouTube even existed. Both have a preternatural aptitude for storytelling, perfectionist dispositions, an appreciation for the analog, and extreme respect for detail. The list goes on.And yet, Van and Casey are also very different artists with disparate sensibilities.Back in 2010 after the Neistat Brothers HBO show wasn't picked up for a second season, Casey went on to become, well Casey Neistat. Van on the other hand, embarked on a very different journey. An artistic journey of self-discovery—outside the public sphere—until recently. Now re-emerged by dint of his recently launched YouTube Channel, ‘The Spirited Man', Van muses philosophical and explores questions large and small with a curious, introspective flare that is totally unique, utterly compelling, and just-so-perfectly Van.I was (and continue to be) thoroughly entranced by this series—and so curious about Van—that I reached out to Casey to connect us.Today Van shares his story, and it is wild.My plan was to unfurl ‘The Story of Van Neistat' in a relatively linear fashion. That's not at all what happened. And this exchange is better for it.Fluid and conversational, this is an excavation of the artist life. It's as much about hardship and survival as it is about creativity and productivity. We discuss curiosity, sobriety, discipline, the value of being meticulous, and his commitment to preserving an analog life.We talk about why he didn't continue making films with Casey and Van's many collaborations with artist Tom Sachs. Finally, Van spins a few epic yarns featuring Werner Herzog, the Safdie Brothers, and the lore of 368 Broadway—a building in lower Manhattan that birthed many an amazing creative career in the early 2000s.To read more click here. You can also watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Van is super awesome. I love this one.  I think we've built up a little bit of a relationship here, ya think?  Not to the point where I think you can trust me, but enough to know that I'm going to tell you what you need to hear, not necessarily what you want to hear.   I think we've gotten to know each other at least that well.  So, I want to tell you something that some of you need to hear. This is not a competition.  It has never been.  It never will be.  This creative pursuit that we share is not a contest. It's not a zero-sum game where there are winners and losers.  It's just there.  It is what it is, as cliche as that saying has become lately. You're not going to be the next Joe Rogan or Roman Mars.  You're not going to be the next James Patterson or Neil Gaiman.   We're not the next Sue Bryce or Annie Leibowitz or Ansel Adams. We won't be the next Casey Neistat or Peter McKinnon.   As Brother Dave Gardner used to say, "Take that one, friends.  Weigh it."    I know how this goes because I've done it.  We see the one we like, and we want to be like them.  Sure!  But here's the thing: That's easy.  That's the cheap way, the coward's way.   That's the way of people who are in it for the likes and the LOLs and the money.   I mean, you can crank out some content, don't get me wrong.  You can crank out all kinds of content that sound like someone else, stuff that's trending, and stuff that you find on YouTube that has a bajillion views on it, so you know it's gonna work for you as well.  Do you know what you're not creating?  Anything that lets people know you YOU are. If you've listened to me for any length of time, you know a few things about me.  You know I've been married for 26 years.  You know I've got three kids.  You know my parents are gone, and I've spent a lot of time examining that relationship and realizing exactly how dysfunctional it really was.  You know I have a psycho brother.  You know I tried to be in the military when I was 18, and that ended quickly.  You know I think Pink Floyd is the greatest band ever and that Roger Waters is amazing.  You know I've spent time in radio, in call centers, and at the age of 47, stumbled into a new career path as a multimedia specialist that opened many new possibilities for me.  You know coronavirus ate my job this year, and that I've been looking for work in multimedia with not a lot of success because I need qualifications I don't have.  You know that Kim and I try to shoot photography on Saturday Mornings, and it's done more for our marriage in 25 years than anything else I could name, and you know all this because *I* told you on this show or anything connected to it.  Casey fucking Neistat didn't tell you that.  Joe fucking Rogan didn't tell you that.  I shouldn't say that, I suppose.  I actually respect Casey Neistat. Study those that have succeeded, absolutely.  Gain every bit of knowledge you can from those who have done it, absolutely.   But take that knowledge and create something that is unapologetically, unmistakably, and authentically yours.  You might not be as successful, but you'll be able to point to it later and say, I made that.  That was me.   I promise you, that is WAY more fulfilling.

After many years working as a successful Hollywood movie editor for Disney and Marvel, and teaching others how to edit videos, Trevor Jones and his wife Leila got their real estate license. Then September 21 2017. The hammer came down, and Trevor was let go from his position as an editor. In their first year of real estate, Trevor and Leila doubled their income through video. They accomplished this by marketing their video content on social media, doing open houses, and following up with warm leads. They did ZERO cold calling. Imagine the camera is rolling as David and Corey learn Trevor’s video marketing strategies that helped launch their real estate career into the stratosphere. Trevor saves you years of time as he shares what has taken him 20 full years to learn while delivering actionable steps you can use today to get results in your real estate business.  When you’re done this episode, check out our talks with Len T. The is episode number 59 and we are going to go to the movies. Actually, don't get your hopes up folks. We are not going to the cinema. No. Today we are strictly low-brow, asking the question: should doctors and specifically urologists should dabble in making movies? Actually, the question has already been answered. The answer is yes. And it was answered in 1917 according to an article from the Journal of Urology. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.urology.2017.03.0310090-4295  The procedure in 1917 was performed by Dr. Wirt Dakin at the Los Angeles County hospital. After being shown several times the film was stored, sealed for 50 plus years until a restoration was able to salvage 8 of the original 22 minutes of the film.  You can find it online. I will provide a link in the show notes. Link to Wirt Dakin video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJwDOg1ttBk One of the oldest expressions used in medical training regarding how to learn any form of surgery is “see one, do one, teach one.”  This adage is based on the apprenticeship model of medical training with progressive responsibility through medical school, internship, residency, and finally into practice. We see first, then we do. When we become proficient then we can teach.  See one, do one, teach one. Today, though, I want to focus on the first step, the “see one.” Increasingly we are first “seeing” on online video platforms, whether we are a doctor…or a patient. We, as doctors, can be content creators, or at least we need to be, because we are teachers. As one of my medical school professors often said, “doctor means teacher.” The word “doctor” is the agentive noun of the Latin verb docere (do-ke-re) which means “to teach”. The title “doctor” is a word referring to anyone who is recognized to have acquired sufficient knowledge in a subject to be a teacher of the subject. See one, do one, teach one. Can we learn and teach by creating and watching video? I think we can. Can we do more than simply hold a phone up to our face and start talking. I think we can.  And we probably should.  Links to My YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv_c2AfSZe4fxyVnbP-RANg My Vidscrip channel: https://app.vidscrip.com/user/5726cad1a254a5897c3c336e Casey Neistat Make it count video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxfZkMm3wcg

“We named the company Telegraph because the telegraph was the first mass, modern communication device that allowed people to communicate from continent to continent.” Kevin McLendon, CEO of Telegraph Creative, brings his journey as an entrepreneur in front of our mic. Throughout this podcast, McLendon discusses how Telegraph separates itself from the common creative agency by investing in the uniqueness of each brand Telegraph works with, and sharing it with the world in a visually appealing and magnetic manor. “It all comes down to original thought.” In a world full of choices and ideas to grab on to, original thought tends to get lost in the process. Kevin has made it a point at Telegraph to develop a team of experts to create and maintain a unique and original brand for each organization they work with. “At the end of the day, if you have the confidence that you do good work, and the talent is on par with anybody else, that's all you can do is sell yourself and sell your talent.” People are always looking for new ways of doing things. In the summer of 2017 Telegraph launched Sloss Tech l The Southeast's Preeminent Tech Festival During Sloss Tech, the Telegraph team worked with influencer, Casey Neistat. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:27 – Today's topic: Should You Document or Create Content? 00:38 – Instead of thinking about your new content, why not just document what you're doing 00:47 – Logic is, when you document what you're doing, people can pick up lessons from that 01:00 – Gary V and Casey Neistat are always vlogging and there is still so much information you can gain from them 01:12 – Gary V usually just walks around in his office and shows his daily life 01:31 – It will also depend on your personality type 01:49 – Neil describes himself as a creator, so he creates videos with new information 02:15 – Focus on what works for you 02:49 – Eric can do both, but he prefers to create videos and plan ahead of time 03:15 – Having a process is important 03:32 – Eric is currently creating a reality series where they go into people's offices 03:55 – Eric is experimenting 04:00 – Don't force yourself into something that you're not naturally good at 04:08 – That's it for today's episode! 3 Key Points: When you document your daily routine, it's amazing what people can learn from watching you. Do what works best for you and what you're comfortable doing. You can always experiment with both documenting what you do and creating content to see what fits you and your lifestyle. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:27 – Today’s topic: Should You Document or Create Content? 00:38 – Instead of thinking about your new content, why not just document what you’re doing 00:47 – Logic is, when you document what you’re doing, people can pick up lessons from that 01:00 – Gary V and Casey Neistat are always vlogging and there is still so much information you can gain from them 01:12 – Gary V usually just walks around in his office and shows his daily life 01:31 – It will also depend on your personality type 01:49 – Neil describes himself as a creator, so he creates videos with new information 02:15 – Focus on what works for you 02:49 – Eric can do both, but he prefers to create videos and plan ahead of time 03:15 – Having a process is important 03:32 – Eric is currently creating a reality series where they go into people’s offices 03:55 – Eric is experimenting 04:00 – Don’t force yourself into something that you’re not naturally good at 04:08 – That’s it for today’s episode! 3 Key Points: When you document your daily routine, it’s amazing what people can learn from watching you. Do what works best for you and what you’re comfortable doing. You can always experiment with both documenting what you do and creating content to see what fits you and your lifestyle. Last week Chris Fenwick and I explored scene by scene Casey Neistat’s video: The Casey Neistat’s Guide to Filmmaking. In that episode, Chris referenced a hilarious video created by London-based director and filmmaker Tom Bryan. Tom’s film is called "The Casey Neistat School of Filmmaking." Tom Bryan's real passion - though already an accomplished corporate video producer - is to create drama oriented films. The Casey Neistat School of Filmmaking - self-funded and created with an all volunteer crew - is the first in a series of several narrative films Tom has set out to create this year. Watching this short film, it’s obvious he is off to an amazing start. Tom is a filmmaker to watch! I know a lot of folks - especially filmmakers - don’t get the Neistat phenomena. However, is there anything we can learn from the Neistat experience? Chris Fenwick returns to this episode to join my conversation with Tom Bryan to discuss this topic and answer that question. It seems like everyone today wants to be the next Casey Neistat. What makes his YouTube channel and videos so compelling? Neistat's YouTube channel currently has over 5 million subscribers, and has amassed over 1 billion views. He must be doing something right that draws such an insanely huge audience. A few months ago Casey Neistat released a video he called Casey Neistat’s Guide to Filmmaking. In this episode of the Digital Convergence Podcast, Chris Fenwick and I take an indepth look at Neistat's video. Chris casts his keen video editor eyes upon each scene in this video and talks about why Casey’s story telling works so well. We also talk about the new DJI Mavic Pro, and I try to goad Chris into making an epic experiential documentary of Route 66. YouTube star Casey Neistat rejects the term “viral video,” which is strange because he's had more than his share of internet monsters. To say I want to make a viral movie, is like a musician saying I want to make a hit song -- it's just not a good place to start, Neistat says, paraphrasing a point made on Twitter. So how does Neistat start? How does he both attract an audience of millions, and keep them coming back on a daily basis? Neistat is joined on this segment of the pod by Bailey Richardson, one of the early team members at Instagram. With the tools of production available to everyone, how do you create something that people will stop and pay attention to? Neistat does it by ripping up the snowy streets of New York on a snowboard towed behind a jeep, but what about the rest of us?
