I'm always looking for indie filmmaking models to study. I like to analyze how other filmmakers make successful indie films while doing through a new DIY method, self distributing their film or achieving critical and fan respect for their work.Well I found a film that checks all the boxes, For Lovers Only create by the Polish Brothers, Michael and Mark Polish (more on that film later). These filmmakers have been making films, on their terms, for over a decade now.Since premiering at Sundance with their debut feature, 1999's Twin Falls Idaho, the brothers have remained steadfast in their commitment to creating personal, character-driven films. How does one make money shooting a feature film on a DSLR? The film in question came from a screenplay that Mark Polish wrote more than a decade ago called For Lovers Only, about an American photographer who runs into an old flame while on assignment in Paris. The film follows the rekindled lovers around Paris, France in a series of quiet vignettes that gradually reveal more about the complications in the couples' lives.Related: DSLR Video Tips: How to Make Your DSLR Film or Video Look More CinematicInspired by the guerilla style of the French New Wave filmmakers of yesteryear, Mark and Michael Polish came up with a simple plan: they'd fly over to France with only a Canon 5D Mark II camera (which they already owned) and one actress (Castle star Stana Katic) in tow and just go out and shoot feature film. Oh did I mention it was in black and white?Michael Polish sat down with me for an amazing interview about his filmmaking life, Hollywood and what it means to be an artist.

The C500 offers 4K recording to an external field recorder like the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q.

The buzz is building for NAB. What is Canon going to announce? Wait, not one, but two cameras? planetMitch, Chris Fenwick, and special guest Paul Antico, all chat with me about we might expect from next week's NAB show in Las Vegas. Also, in the news we talk about the FCP X 10.0.4 update from Apple - and - ouch! - it breaks Red Giant Software's Magic Bullet Looks and probably a whole bunch of other plugins. We talk about Flickr, 500px, and Instagram. In the course of the conversation we invent three new phrases: data tainting, pixel gorillas, and 4K for free. You'll have to listen to the podcast to see what it all means :) Paul Antico talks about his progression from a "convergence" shooter with the Canon 5D Mark II (and now Mark III) to the FS100 to the C300. Chris talks about the question of whether one should switch to Avid. Of course, we do our usual artist picks and gear picks. Many thanks toCrumplePop for sponsoring the podcast. We lead off with a wrap-up of the excitement (and fall-out) of Canon's latest announcement: the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. planetMitch brings a balanced, reasoned response to the Nikon D800 demo video that apparently used Canon 5D Mark II footage. Gabe Cheifetz, of CrumplePop, talks about FCP X. I'm pleased to have CrumplePop as a sponsor of our podcast. I'm fanatical about their plugins and use them extensively in my training series. Featuring: DJ Vegh - Founder of PhotoShipOne and AZ Chopper Cam.What if you could mount a Canon 5D Mark II, 7D or T2i on an aerial platform to shoot unique above ground POV shots? You can! DJ Vegh has mastered the use of radio controlled electric-powered helicopters as an aerial platform for the photography and video. If take a look at some of DJ demo videos on Vimeo and his websites, you will be amazed by what can be accomplished with these aerial platforms. DJ is an accomplished photographer, videographer and post-production editor. He also holds a fixed-wing pilot license. With over ten years of experience in aerial video and still photography, it was only natural that he would make good use of his practical mechanical design and aviation experience to concoct an amazing platform for shooting HD and HD DSLR video. Dj was recently invited to use his aerial platform to shoot aerial scenes for Discovery channel's popular TV show Mythbusters. DJ talks about how he developed the PhotoShipOne system. What does it take to learn how to fly these RC copters? How long does it take to learn? How do you setup the camera for taking video? What lens is best? How do you achieve smooth fluid motion? How do you line and monitor the shot in-flight? How do you determine proper exposure? Who are using these platforms today? DJ talks about future plans for new "ships" that are much easier to fly, and the development of an iPad app to help a camera operator control the camera while it is in flight. This episode will appeal to the uber-geek in any video DSLR shooter.

He embraced and popularized the use of 35mm adapters to achieve a filmic look with video. On the heels of that innovation, came the new video capable DSLR. Philip received his first Canon 5D Mark II in May of 2009. After spending several weeks learning how to use the 5D Mark II, he began shooting almost exclusively DSLR video for both commercial and personal projects. He chronicled in great detail his experiences with DSLR video on his website and blog www.philipbloom.net. On June 1, 2010, after just a little under 3 years of existence, his website surpassed 10 million views - a testament to the value of the information Philip shares so willingly to other aspiring DSLR cinematographers. In this interview, Philip and I go on a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride of a conversation covering a broad range of topics that you will find entertaining, informative, and inspiring. Philip's tireless passion for the art of cinematography and photography comes shining through. This is how Izzy describes himself: "I am obsessed with video. To me, it’s an incredible art form. It has the visuals of photography, but when you add audio and physical movement, it takes the art form to a whole new level. While video seems complex at first, it isn’t. I have devoted the last several years to showing others how easy video is. It’s not the ‘black art’ that people sometimes pretend it is. Developing skills with video is as easy as learning the principles and then practicing them." Izzy's obsession with video comes through loud and clear in our conversation. It's clear that Izzy loves to teach and share what he has learned. We discuss gear a bit, including the Canon 5D Mark II that he recently started using. But then we dive into the gnarly issue of making money with video. Video producers and filmmakers often struggle doing client work - going from one gig to searching for the next. Izzy's approach to the business is different - and he's very open to sharing the "secrets" of his success being a content producer - and he does so in this episode of the 16x9 Cinema Digital Convergence podcast. That's quite an honor to be recognized as a member of the triumvirate of video DSLR pioneers. In recognition of Shane's pioneering work with the Canon 5D Mark II, Canon inducted Shane as one of the first cinematographers into their Explorers of Light program. Shane's long list of accomplishments include working with director Rob Cohen on the feature films The Guardian, The Rat Pack and The Skulls. A partial list of other feature films that credit Shane as the cinematographer or director of photography include Into the Blue, Drumline, Swing Vote, The Greatest Game Ever Played, and Terminator Salvation. He has also worked on several commercial shoots and is an accomplished still photographer. In this episode of the 16x9 Cinema Digital Convergence podcast, Shane Hurlbut shares his passion for using DSLR video. He describes the Canon 5D Mark II as a game changer - one that's beat him up and heavily bruised him - but nonetheless he has successfully tamed the beast and embraced it as a serious tool for the cinematographer in feature films, short films, and commercial work. There are many self-appointed pontificators who arrogantly proclaim that the Canon 5D Mark II is not suitable for serious filmmaking. Shane proves them wrong by doing just that - using the 5D Mark II for serious filmmaking. Shane talks about how he uses the Canon 5D Mark II on feature films and commercials. He talks about his short film, "The Last 3 Minutes" and tells us why and how he did it. Shane candidly talks about his initial failures with DSLR video and the lessons he learned. He does not hold back from sharing what he has learned. His willingness to share is evident by his blog: Hurlblog - an incredible resource for all filmmakers - whether you use DSLR video or not. It was a pleasure talking with Shane. His enthusiasm for filmmaking and using the Canon 5D Mark II will motivate you to get out and shoot your next indie film!
