What is the toughest race in the world? According to The Nxorth, the Arrowhead 135 is a strong contender. With an average finish rate below 50%, Race Director Ken Krueger and his team have crafted an event that's as grueling as it is rooted in old-school camaraderie and a close-knit, family-like community. Finishers Bob Crowley and Terry Fletcher share their preparation strategies, gear tips, and experiences battling both the elements and their own limits. The discussion covers crucial topics like mental toughness, cold-weather clothing strategies, and dealing with physical challenges like blisters and trench foot. They also highlight the strong sense of community among racers and how enduring such harsh conditions fosters deep camaraderie. We recently replayed an episode from 2017 called, "Sh!t You Don't Do on the Trail" with Tim Twietmeyer and Bob Crowley. We had so much fun walking down memory lane, we thought we should update it for 2024. Since we are near the start of Western States 100, we thought we'd skew it towards this race, but many of the principles mentioned are applicable wherever you are running. And of course, it wouldn't be in TRN style without gamifying the episode :). So Bob and Tim used descriptive but cryptic titles for each topic. We have to guess what they are referring to. We hope you have fun playing along. Tim Twietmeyer is Vice President of the Western States Endurance Run Board and board member since 1996. He is also the only person to finish the race 25 times....all under 24 hours! Oh.....and he won the race FIVE times! Bob Crowley is a past president of ITRA, the International Trail Running Association, and a seasoned runner with notable finishes of over 80 ultras including 2019's Tor des Geants and the 2023 Tahoe 200 mile race. Both are members of History Expeditions, where they take their passion for history and bring it to life through expeditions that combine historical research and adventure. In this episode, we take a nostalgic look back at an episode from 2017 with trail veterans Bob Crowley and Tim Twietmeyer. We revisit "Sh#@ You Don't Do On the Trail," where we covered the essential unwritten rules of the trail and aid stations that every runner should know. From the infamous "snot rocket" technique to the delicate art of avoiding "double-dipper," Bob and Tim shared their invaluable insights with humor and wisdom. Whether you're a seasoned ultrarunner or new to the sport, this episode is packed with tips to help you navigate the trails with grace and respect. Enjoy this trip down memory lane and refresh your trail etiquette knowledge with us! Tim Twietmeyer is Vice President of the Western States Endurance Run Board and board member since 1996. What if there was a way to instantly diagnose and address running issues right on the trail? In this episode, we talk about the new Trail Triage app. We speak with the team that developed the app answering these and other key questions: What is Trail Triage? Why was it developed? How can it help me on my training runs and racing? How do I access it? Where does the content come from? Can I trust it? How much does it cost? Trail Triage is an innovative new tool that can assist runners, pacers, crew, and aid station volunteers tackle common challenges during runs. Trail Triage is a free mobile app that currently identifies 13 common issues a trail runner might be faced with. The app then helps you diagnose the issue, and provides some solutions that might help and let you know if it is serious enough to DNF or not. This is the team who brought this vision to life: • Bob Crowley, who sparked the original idea; • Dr. John Anderson, a seasoned emergency physician whose medical insights are woven into the core of the app; and • Scott Vosburg, the tech wizard who turned these ideas into reality.
The History Expeditions team of Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Elke Reimer, Jennifer Hemmen and Hal Hall sat down with us shortly after completing their epic trek from Placerville, CA to Genoa, NV over the course of 5 days. The 2024 expedition they chose was a commemoration of the incredible efforts of John "Snowshoe" Thompson, a legendary figure of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California in the mid-1800s. Snowshoe spent 20 years carrying mail and supplies over the mountains under his own power in all conditions, using all of his skills to navigate and travel by foot and 10 foot long, heavy skis. Even after such dedication, he was never paid for his service to the country. The team researched his story and route meticulously, and only a short time after a historic Tahoe snowfall, they embarked on another meaningful journey that connected them with community members from all walks of life along the way until they reached their ultimate destination across the mountains.Join us for all of the details and stories of the trip, both the physical and emotional, all of the insights and connections made along the way!History Expeditions main siteElke's trail work days - sign up here!https://www.amazon.com/Snowshoe-Thompson-Pioneer-Carrier-Sierra/dp/194105210X---The Mile 99 Interview | LinktreeYour Hosts: Jessica Harris / Greg LarkinThe Mile 99 Interview is creating podcast episodes | PatreonVenmo | The Mile 99 InterviewIntro/outro music: Joseph McDade - Elevation: https://josephmcdade.com/music/elevationSupport the show

In December of 1846, a small group split off from the Donner Party in a desperate attempt to find help. The party, known as the Forlorn Hope, endured the bitter Sierra Nevada winter, trekking roughly 100 miles in 33 days. The route the party took remained unknown for decades. Until 2020, when ultra-runners Bob Crowley and Tim Twietmeyer completed a seven-year odyssey. Together they mapped and retraced the path they think was taken by Forlorn Hope. Today, Tim and Bob join host Mike Corey to share how they managed this incredible feat of endurance.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This episode explores a unique perspective on risk-taking and personal growth. Our world has become a comfort zone, where taking risks is often avoided, leading to a softer, more complacent society. But what if the key to unlocking success and joy lies in stepping into vulnerability and embracing challenges? To shed light on this intriguing idea, we're joined by Bob Crowley and Adam Kimble. They're not just enthusiasts; they're connoisseurs of ultrarunning—a sport that epitomizes risk-taking and vulnerability. Ultrarunning isn't just a physical challenge; it's a portal to self-discovery and personal betterment. Bob and Adam are here to discuss how this extreme sport can be a metaphor for life, teaching us to break free from our comfort zones and stride confidently into the unknown. Check out more about Adam and his coaching, speaking and overall adventuring at AdamKimble.com Find out more about Bob's passion with History Expeditions where he combines history and endurance adventures at HistoryExp.org

After the seven survivors of the Forlorn Hope Party broke through to Johnson Ranch on January 18th, 1847 after a harrowing 33-day trek where 8 members perished, relief parties were mustered to try and retrieve the remaining survivors of the Donner Party. The first of four relief parties departed Johnson Ranch on February 4th, 1847, with mules and provisions. As the frigid winter and rugged Sierra terrain persisted, their numbers dwindled to seven men who summoned their determination and humanity, eventually reaching the buried cabins on the edge of Donner Lake on February 18th, 1847. Upon arriving they encountered silence and saw nothing but snowdrifts 20 feet deep. A lone dark figure emerged from the snow and in a frail women's voice said, “Are you men from California or do you come from heaven?” Thus began the rescue of the Donner Party. The Relief Parties are a lesser-known part of the Donner saga. The grit and selflessness of these men who risked their lives for strangers is a tale of inspiration and intrigue. Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen, and Elke Reimer explored the multi-dimensional persona of each of the relief party members; their history, character, and motivation. With this, they linked together the relief route based on historic records. To honor the true grit and selflessness of the relief parties the Donner Relief Expedition will set off on February 14, 2022, from Johnson Ranch on mules and foot and head east over the Sierra Nevada to the Donner State Park Museum exactly 175 years to the day of the arrival of the 1st Relief Party. Come and take a seat by the campfire and listen to what this crew has planned. In this episode, Ultra Stories hosts Eric Chrisman and John Lacroix sit down with International Trail Running Association (ITRA) President Bob Crowley to discuss the current climate of trail and ultra running, and where we're headed from here.
Ultrarunners, adventurists, and amateur historians, Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen and Elke Reimer set out to retrace the steps of the Forlorn Hope through the California Sierra Nevada mountains. We discuss their amazing journey and how it can help us put perspective on our lives and our sport. In the winter of 1846-47 a group of pioneers were headed to California when they were trapped in the high Sierra Nevada Mountains. The snow was over 20 feet deep, they were running out of food, and the group wasn't working together. Three unsuccessful attempts were made to escape and get help from California. On December 16, 1846 a small group began another attempt on homemade snowshoes with enough food for six days; hoping it would take around 10 days to make the 100 mile journey. Check out the short 3 minute video photographer Keith Sutter produced about the adventure. You can find out more about this heroic endurance feat and about the memorial event and how to track them at ForlornHope.org. Some of their photos can be seen here.
The modern-day Forlorn Hope Expedition Team sat down with us in this episode to talk about the genesis, planning and execution of their recently-completed journey from Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee, CA to Johnson's Ranch in Wheatland. Their route closely mirrored that of the original Forlorn Hope team that left the stranded Donner Party on December 16th, 1846 in an attempt to find rescue for the starving settlers. The original Forlorn Hope party faced an arduous trek through the mountains in a year of deep snow and pounding storms with much tragedy and loss of life until a small contingent of seven survivors reached their destination. In this episode, hear the modern team recount the research and planning they had to do to create this project and the tributes that they offered to each of the men, women and children who set out into the unknown 174 years ago.Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen and Elke Reimer each give their own view of the expedition, the impact it had on them to walk in the footsteps of these early pioneers and the future plans they have now that the physical journey is complete.Tune in for this emotional and moving episode and find out more!Forlorn Hope team website: https://www.forlornhope.org/Expedition team bios: https://www.forlornhope.org/expedition-team/Forlorn Hope team Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/371977447411728Team photographer Keith Sutter's expedition summary video: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CJLzcAsD1cJTeam member Elke's Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/ca_wildflower/"The Indifferent Stars Above" book: http://www.danieljamesbrown.com/books/indifferent-stars/Donner Party Diary web site: http://www.donnerpartydiary.com/Donner Party books and DVDs: https://shop.sierrastateparks.org/collections/books-cds-dvds --Your hosts: Greg Larkin / Mike Turner / Jessica HarrisIntro/outro music: Joseph McDade - Elevation: https://josephmcdade.com/music/elevationSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/themile99interview)

Bob Crowley joins us to build off our previous podcast with him. In "Ultra Trail Running Culture: Bob Crowley- Part 1 we discussed the tenets of being an ultra trail runner, part 2 and part 3 will focus on the emphasis and importance ultra trail runners place on mental preparation for an event. Specifically, what does one do to plan, prepare, and execute and review to optimize the experience of running an ultra event. There are four stages of mental training for a 100-mile event (some of these may transfer to shorter distances, but we will focus on the 100-miler because of its uniqueness) Plan Prepare Execute Review In Part 2 we talk about Planning and Preparing. Ultra Trail Running is distinctly different in culture and mental preparation than other running or endurance sports. Veteran Trail Ultra Runner, Bob Crowley, visits with the Nation about what is unique about this sports culture. Is there a difference between "doing" an ultra run and "being" an ultra runner? What are some of the tenets of the trail running culture? Are we losing the ultra trail running culture with the mass appeal and participation recently? How can we keep the culture? How does this culture helps us prepare mentally for the experiences that accompany a long trail race An interesting perspective from Geoff Roes in his article, "Ultrarunning is Dead" Join the Trail Animals Running Club "Race Course in Review" by Vasque Running Shoes Take the Tailwind Challenge at: Tailwind Nutrition Check out the cool headlamps made for trail running at Petzl
Bob Crowley has been trail running for over 21 years. Josh Katzman for 7 years. Both are members of the massive Trail Animals Running Club - a running club that has grown to exceed over 2500 member in the U.S.A. They join the Nation to discuss trail culture. Are we at risk of losing the unique culture that welcomed us all in? Will the culture change as the sport continues to grow? How can we maintain the culture?
