My guest today has done it all. He's gone from cinematography on small-budget indie films to $200 million-plus projects which is literally goals for many in this line of business. Director and cinematographer, Shane Hurlbut's thirty-plus experience and success as a storyteller is categorically innovative to the craft and inspiring for other filmmakers.Shane's latest film Love Hard is set for digital release via Netflix this November. This romantic comedy is about a young woman in Los Angeles who falls for a man on a dating app and travels to his East Coast hometown to surprise him for Christmas but discovers that she's been catfished. Her crush actually does live in the same town, and the guy who duped her offers to set them up if she pretends to be his girlfriend for the holidays. He's an esteemed member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the American Society of Cinematographers. The ASC recognized Shane's work very early on in his carrier from his film The Rat Pack and he was one of their youngest cinematographer nominees. Shane Co-founded the Hurlbut Academy alongside his wife and business partner, Lydia Hurlbut. Their platform offers professional online filmmaking education and mentoring materials, curated by other filmmakers. This interactive library has collaborated with filmmakers to develop about 50 Courses, 400+ Lessons, and 700+ hours of instruction videos. Some of the top projects he's worked on include Drumline, We Are Marshall, Terminator Salvation, Act Of Valor, and Game Of Thrones. The highly acclaimed HBO series, Game of Thrones was hailed for its spectacular cinematography. Outstanding, if you will. In 2012, Shane served as director of photography for their Game of Thrones: You Win or You Die - Inside the HBO Series that was an interview for major cast and crew members. Wherein, characters, families, kingdoms, and plots were explained with an in-depth look at season one. And what viewers could expect from season two. Some of Shane's work includes NetFlix's Rim of The World, Holidate, There Is No Place Like Home, Fathers, and Daughters, the pilot episode for SyFy's Resident Alien, and Disney+ original film Safety.Safety was inspired by the true story of Ray-Ray McElrathbey, the film follows a freshman football player for Clemson University who secretly raised his younger brother on campus after his home life became too unsteady. His passion for filmmaking goes back to his childhood. Like the cool kid he still is, Shane did morning announcements at our high school and DJ for a local radio station. As you can imagine, he started doing dances, proms, and homecoming across the local upstate New York area. He earned part of his education at a small community college where he fell in love with radio, TV production, and so forth. A scholarship to study film at Emerson College in Boston sealed the deal for Shane. In 2002, Shane's box office hit film, Drumline became a major splash. Nick Cannon stars as a young drummer who enters the fictional Atlanta A&T University and bumps heads with the leader of his new school's drum section. A fish-out-of-water comedy about a talented street drummer from Harlem who enrolls in a Southern university, expecting to lead its marching band's drumline to victory. He initially flounders in his new world, before realizing that it takes more than talent to reach the top. Lots of knowledge bombs from Shane in this conversation, You don't want to miss out. Learning to be a leader and a well-rounded filmmaker are certainly two things that will help you stand out as an editor.A big part of being an editor is having good leadership skills in order to motivate and enable others to contribute towards the success of a production. Also being more knowledgeable of other subjects like cinematography, screenwriting, directing, music composition, or sound design can help you communicate more effectively with other creatives and lead to a long-lasting, successful career. As Roger Nygard, ACE said in a previous episode of the podcast - "Don't be an editor who cuts films, be a filmmaker who edits."My guest on episode 29 is director of photography Shane Hurlbut, ASC (THE RIM OF THE WORLD, TERMINATOR: SALVATION, WE ARE MARSHALL, NEED FOR SPEED) and he shares advice on how you can become a better leader and also talks about his role as an educator through various online platforms including the Filmmakers Academy which he started last year.I'm also excited to share that I have joined the Filmmakers Academy as their editing mentor, and it's been great working with their team and the other mentors, and creating courses about the craft of editing so make sure to check it out today! Some of the topics Shane and I will be discussing on the show today include the importance of developing resilience to thrive in this industry, the future of cinematography, overcoming challenges when trying to break into feature films, how to shine a spotlight on yourself and stand out from others, choosing the right projects to work on, the importance of having a significant other that supports your career goals, and we'll hear all about the Filmmakers Academy!CLICK HERE to join the Hollywood Editing Mentor community!SUBSCRIBE and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts!Original Music: "Apollo's Haze" and "Do You Want" by JesusdapnkFacebook: www.fb.com/jesusdapnkSoundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/jesusdapnkInstagram: @jesusdapnk

I love chatting with innately funny people, and Tal Wagman is one such a person. We met shooting our wildly popular "Built To Amaze" campaign for Toyota via Saacthi. Now Tal has moved his humor mill over to Zambezi working on Vitaminwater and Venmo. We chat about RottenApples, a website database that informs us whether or not a film or show is tied to a person accused of sexual misconduct. It's a great resource. I've alos posted a fun spot of Tal's at www.jordanbrady.com. thanks, Jordan This runs 90 minutes. Commercial Directing Bootcamp is August 25th, 2018 in LA so sign up now. Episode 63 of the Digital Convergence podcast brings Chris Fenwick, planetMitch, Tony Reale (of NextWaveDV) and myself together in a lively discussion about learning the craft of filmmaking. Do you need to go to film school? Is a college degree necessary to make it in this business? What is the best way to learn? Does one size fit all when it comes to education? We also talk about the latest video and photography news. planetMitch talks about his recent weekend trip and meet up with Shane Hurlbut, the director of photography for the recently released feature film, Act of Valor. Much of the movie was filmmed with Canon 5D Mark II's. Chris Fenwick responds to a friendly rebuttal from one of our listeners on the noise reduction / sharpening issue we talked about in the last episode. I'm pleased to introduce CrumplePop as a new sponsor for the Digital Convergence podcast. I have been using their products for some time now. Shane Hurlbut talks about his new partnership with Letus Corp. to create a new line of tools to turn HDSLR cameras into a "mean movie making machine."
Episode 37 - Featuring Tara Oldfield and Jason DeRose of Novacut - with host Carl Olson (http://16x9cinema.com) and co-host Chris Fenwick (http://chrisfenwick.com). Chris and I begin this episode by talking about the Digital Dark Ages and huge problem of archiving and backing up video, photo, and other media files - affordably. Our banter migrates over to the controversial question "Is HDSLR video dead?" In the interview segement, I talk with Tara Oldfield and Jason DeRose of Novacut. Jason and Tara are developing a free video editor that allows artists to collaborate over the internet and harness cheap cloud computing. The Novacut editor is aimed at professional-grade TV and movie production using HDSLR cameras (like the 5D Mark II). These cameras have drastically lowered production costs, but we want to reduce costs even further... so they are taking the lean, distributed workflow perfected by the open-source community, and bringing it to video. Distributed teams are a big part of what has allowed open-source to amazingly produce better software, yet for less money and in less time. The Novacut team feels they can do the same for video. Tara and Jason want to see an explosion of financially viable independent TV shows distributed directly to fans over the Internet, funded through direct fan support, licensed under the Creative Commons. Chris and I wrap up the show with the latest on Chris' epic journey to switch from Final Cut Pro to Adobe's Premiere Pro. We talk about the Shane Hurlbut "sizzle" trailor video featuring highlights from Shane's 2010 HDSLR Bootcamp.

Episode 16 of the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Featuring: Shane Hurlbut, ASC In a recent conversation with Gale Tattersall, DP for Fox's House MD, Gale mentioned Shane Hurlbut - along with Rodney Charters and Philip Bloom - as one of the pioneers of using the Canon 5D Mark II in cinema. That's quite an honor to be recognized as a member of the triumvirate of video DSLR pioneers. In recognition of Shane's pioneering work with the Canon 5D Mark II, Canon inducted Shane as one of the first cinematographers into their Explorers of Light program. Shane's long list of accomplishments include working with director Rob Cohen on the feature films The Guardian, The Rat Pack and The Skulls. A partial list of other feature films that credit Shane as the cinematographer or director of photography include Into the Blue, Drumline, Swing Vote, The Greatest Game Ever Played, and Terminator Salvation. He has also worked on several commercial shoots and is an accomplished still photographer. In this episode of the 16x9 Cinema Digital Convergence podcast, Shane Hurlbut shares his passion for using DSLR video. He describes the Canon 5D Mark II as a game changer - one that's beat him up and heavily bruised him - but nonetheless he has successfully tamed the beast and embraced it as a serious tool for the cinematographer in feature films, short films, and commercial work. There are many self-appointed pontificators who arrogantly proclaim that the Canon 5D Mark II is not suitable for serious filmmaking. Shane proves them wrong by doing just that - using the 5D Mark II for serious filmmaking. Shane talks about how he uses the Canon 5D Mark II on feature films and commercials. He talks about his short film, "The Last 3 Minutes" and tells us why and how he did it. Shane candidly talks about his initial failures with DSLR video and the lessons he learned. He does not hold back from sharing what he has learned. His willingness to share is evident by his blog: Hurlblog - an incredible resource for all filmmakers - whether you use DSLR video or not. It was a pleasure talking with Shane. His enthusiasm for filmmaking and using the Canon 5D Mark II will motivate you to get out and shoot your next indie film!
