Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 10 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Taylor Willenborg begins our podcast this week with his thoughtful interview of Brian Diecks, the current lead creative producer for Apple. Taylor shows that she was the perfect person to sit down with Brian as she drills down into what it is like being a creative in a corporate environment and specifically the atmosphere inside the Apple Campus in Cupertino, CA. They discuss the culture of innovation at Apple and walk the audience through Diecks work on the Apple Arcade, a project that took years to perfect, giving us the inside scoop on what the creative process was to build up that platform. For our final interview of the week Charlotte Loesch sits down with Michaela Langford. Michaela is Assistant to the President of Film & TV at Anton Corp, a global production company, which has worked on such projects as Paddington 2. The two cover Langford's career journey starting as a Production Assistant and how she slowly worked her way up into more senior positions. The interview tackles the subject of film school relevance in the film industry, with Loesch and Langford approaching the subject from different perspectives which allows for an interesting discussion on the concept of “film education”. The pair wrap the interview by touching on some current events in the film industry, most notable being the WGA writers' strike.

Lord Norman Foster never stops moving—creating a foundation in Madrid, a span bridge in the South of France, redesigning the Reichstag in Berlin, a prototype for a drone airport in Rwanda, and the iconic Apple Campus in Cupertino. However, he did stop for 25 minutes to sit down with Ruthie on River Cafe Table 4 to discuss his influences, education, friendships, and how to make the perfect Pesto Genovese. For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe's open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation. Research Triangle Park in North Carolina is the largest planned research center in the United States, and it's getting bigger - much bigger, at least in terms of buildings. During its first heyday in the 1960's, Research Triangle Park boasted several Modernist corporate campuses, most notably aul Rudolph's complex of buildings for Burroughs Wellcome. Now under the leadership team of today's guest, Research Triangle Foundation CEO Scott Levitan, the park has over a billion in new investment going up – in addition to a brand new Apple Campus. Later on, a chat with Suzanne Somers about the famed Richard Neutra-designed Kaufmann house in Palm Springs, which can be yours for a consumer-friendly $17 million, $8 million off original retail price.

Steve Burrows CBE is an experienced executive and a professional engineer. He has worked on some of the world’s most high-profile buildings and structures, such as Allianz Arena in Munich, the City of Manchester Stadium, the Beijing Olympics’ Birds Nest stadium (now called the National Stadium), and the Apple Campus. But he is not your typical engineer. His curiosity about the ancient past and how we should approach the future make him one of the most interesting people I’ve interviewed. He is a host on the show Time Scanners and produced the critically acclaimed and award-winning iMax movie Dream Big: Engineering Our World. He now owns a firm actively developing and advising developers of technology to disrupt the construction industry. And finally, I would be remiss if I left out that Steve was made a Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen in 2009. Steve and I discuss how to build deep and meaningful connections with others, why developing a team is critical to success, and why leaders need to be catalysts for change. After listening to this podcast, you’ll love Steve as much as I do! And finally, my “listener asked” question is about the essential attributes a leader needs to be successful. I share my thoughts on why curiosity is fundamental to success. Why? Curious people desire to understand how the world works beyond what they experience, so they naturally ask more questions. This opens doors, giving them an advantage over those who are less curious. Asking good questions positions them to learn how to do a job better, faster, and creatively, leading to new assignments, promotions, and raises. Listen to learn more about my tips on how to expand your world and be more curious. Here’s how you can find Steve: https://dreambigfilm.com/ https://www.natgeotv.com/int/time-scanners https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-burrows-cbe-pe-ceng-fice-fasce-mistructe-leed-ap-7b49954/
Welcome to this episode everyone and thank you for tuning in! The topic of today's episode is disability and accessibility. I wanted to have a conversation on this topic early on on my podcast, for two reasons. First of all, it is a very personal subject to me, which you will hear more about as you continue to listen; and, secondly, having been in the business world, I know that this is one of those taboo subjects that has a lot of stigma associated with it, and many leaders including HR leaders still find this a very uncomfortable topic to cover. I have witnesses all sorts of awkward conversations, moments of silence, ignorance and also some truly inspirational moments. However they are too far and few. On today's episode I am having a bold and open conversation with Molly Watt who has experienced every barrier that comes with the Usher syndrome that she was diagnosed with as a child that left her both deaf and blind. Molly is a usability and accessibility consultant in Sigma's experience design team. A keynote speaker, Molly divides her time between inspiring people to consider inclusion in their everyday jobs and working as a consultant, for her own company, for Sigma and for the Molly Watt Trust, her charity. Molly has a condition called Usher Syndrome, which causes deafblindness and has no cure.Molly is a motivational speaker, author and illustrator of 2 children's books and avid blogger. She is an advocate and ambassador of both GN Resound and Sense, a national deafblind charity in the UK. Using her negative experiences to make a positive difference to others, Molly is proud to have spoken at the Houses of Parliament, Harvard Medical School, Apple Campus, Camp Digital, the BBC, the NHS and for private audiologists around the UK. Her passion is accessibility and the use of assistive technology to enable and enhance the lives of people living with life-changing conditions. Please share this conversation and let me know your thoughts and feelings by rating this podcast or using #changeagentpodcast on Twitter. Why are the citizens not doing anything about it? Are they too woke?! Is their wokeness causing this? Is this drug culture or no place to live because it's too expensive? There are even people renting mobile homes for Google engineers to live in This is part of the breakdown of the nuclear family and the lack of resources from religions and all support systems other than the government. The scale is so vast those institutions are overwhelmed In the middle of Palo Alto, there is a whole street full of mobile homes, on the street between Stanford University and Palo Alto High school One guy even has a generator Are these people are so woke that they are really OK with this? How much space does a normal person need? Its time for minimalist living. Live between AirBnBs? Should we become digital nomads? International Living exists to move people out of the US to cheaper places. The migration gene is in play again People are moving away from gathering things and moving towards gathering experiences. For example, roam.co lets you migrate from place to place. Although they seem to be focused around young people We are willing, but maybe we don't have the stamina we used to. Work can be mostly be done from anywhere. Once Venezuela moves away from communism, there may be opportunities there. How long can nationalism last? Will the globalists/collectivists ultimately win? Is this just a blip? Or will things swing one way and another? Movies to watch: The Man from Earth and Dogma All about questioning reality. John Michael Sobrato is Chair of the Board of Trustees at Santa Clara and Chairman of The Sobrato Organization. There are a few different parts of the Sobrato organization that we cover in this conversation.First is the real estate business, which has developed over 21 million square feet of office, R&D and multifamily complexes since the 1960s. A few of the company’s notable office buildings include the former Apple Campus, the Service Now HQ, and offices for Amazon, Google, Netflix, Facebook, Pinterest, NVidia and more. This enormous success has fueled the philanthropy arm of the business, Sobrato Philanthropies, which has deployed more than $552 million giving to education, career pathways, and essential human services, primarily in Silicon Valley. Every year since 2013, the Sobrato Family has been named the number one or two most generous corporation in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal ahead major high-tech companies. Additionally, both John A. and John M. Sobrato and their spouses have taken the Giving Pledge and stated that 100% of their wealth will go to the family foundation. The third area of the business is Sobrato Capital, an investment arm which manages money in both public and private companies. In this conversation, we touch on the evolving business model of Santa Clara, the ethics of profit maximization, lessons from the Sobrato family business, social impact, working through challenges on the Santa Clara Board of Trustees, the role of philanthropy versus government, and what John is most proud of in his career. Go to https:teamtrees.org and help #TeamTrees plant 20 million trees! In 2011, just months before he died, Steve Jobs appeared before the Cupertino City Council to pitch Apple Campus 2. The land had once been an apricot orchard and, while Jobs had plans for a spaceship-shaped office building the likes of which this world had never seen before, he also had plans to bring back at least some of that orchard. To make the new campus decidedly Apple but also to make it… a park. That means they needed trees, some native and fully grown, others more diverse, to better withstand the changing climate, the hotter summers, the cooler winters. It took half a decade to get everything in place but, by 2016, Apple had their park. Apple Park. And over 8000 new trees in and around it. Now, MrBeast and the largest YouTube collaboration is history are trying to plant just a few more. 20 million more, to put a ridiculously large number on it. It’s the #TeamTrees project and, to help do this channel’s part, I’m putting the iPhone 11 up against the Pixel 4 in a camera-to-camera video shootout, right in the middle of all these trees. Seventy years ago, there was no Apple Campus or Googleplex. Silicon Valley itself didn’t even exist! The region was filled with sleepy towns, prune trees, and orange groves. Since then, the cluster of computer-related companies based in Silicon Valley has shifted the gravity of the United States, providing a Pacific counter-weight to the Mid-Atlantic centers of power and pulling the national economy westward. Margaret O’Mara, an Associate Professor of History at the University of Washington, unearths these transformations in her stunning new book The Code: Silicon Valley and the Remaking of America (Penguin Press, 2019) O’Mara documents how Silicon Valley became Silicon Valley. It narrates everything from the rise of the military-industrial complex in California, the origins of personal computing in 1970s counter-culture, and longer history of the gender politics that would eventually bring us the tech-bro. The book is an entertaining but learned tour of Silicon Valley, as O’Mara ably guides readers through weird and wondrous facts as well as through the broader structures that brought this new digital economy into being. It should interest historians of technology, politics, and capitalism, along with anyone, professional or casual, who wants to know how Silicon Valley got to be so influential and important. “We try to evolve teams.” On the show this week @erfon / @bst3r / @lkahney Apple may reveal three new MacBooks at WWDC http://www.cultofmac.com/481877/new-macbooks-wwdc/ Apple hasn’t released new hardware at a WWDC keynote since 2013, but the company is allegedly planning to unveil a new lineup of MacBooks, according to a report that claims the new machines will pack Intel’s new Kaby Lake processor to bring more speed than ever. Three new laptops will debut at WWDC 2017, claims Bloomberg, citing “people familiar with the matter.” Both the MacBook Pro and 12-inch MacBook will be updated with new Intel chips. Apple is also supposedly considering updating the 13-inch MacBook Air with a new processor, too, which would be quite a surprise as most observers assumed the machine was on its last legs now that the MacBook and MacBook Pro are thinner. Sales of the old MacBook Air remain “surprisingly strong” due to its cheap price tag, claims one of the report’s sources. What features needed to make the machine exciting again Shows Apple may be getting about making Mac great again. Intel: Cannonlake CPUs will be more than 15 percent faster than Kaby Lake http://www.pcworld.com/article/3167942/components-processors/intel-cannonlake-will-be-more-than-15-percent-faster-than-kaby-lake.html Meager performance gains aren’t all Apple’s fault Chipmakers in past years focused on increasing performance by raising the clock frequency. But that made chips power hungry, and their focus shifted to adding cores, which boosted performance but also added battery life to laptops. Then the focus turned to integrating technologies like graphics and I/O buses inside processors. Gaming and virtual reality have brought a focus back to raw CPU performance. The performance improvements from Skylake to Kaby Lake topped out at 15 percent. The CPU performance boost for Cannonlake should be at least that, Intel said. The gaming market is exploding, especially eSports, and demand for high-performance Core i7 chips skyrocketed last year Intel may be trying to catch up with AMD, which is boasting a 40 percent performance improvement for its upcoming Ryzen chips. Apple’s standalone Siri could look a lot like Echo Show http://www.cultofmac.com/481625/apples-standalone-siri-look-lot-like-echo-show/ Apple’s Amazon Echo rival standalone Siri speaker will come with a touch-sensitive display, claims KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a note to clients over the weekend, Kuo suggested that the Siri home speaker will have a “touch panel,” although it’s not known whether this will be a full-on screen or a simpler touch-based interface of some sort. Apple has awarded Corning the first grant of its $1 billion investment aimed at boosting high-tech manufacturing jobs in the United States. The glassmaker will receive $200 million. Apple’s contribution is part of its “Advanced Manufacturing Fund” will support Corning’s R&D, capital equipment needs, and state-of-the-art glass processing. News NRL completes first flight of UAV with custom hydrogen fuel cell Scheme of a proton-conducting fuel cell, courtesy Wikipedia. A team from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has developed and flown the Ion Tiger powered by a new hydrogen fuel cell developed at NRL. The program manager at the Office of Naval Research said, "NRL having the know how to build their own fuel cells in-house gives ONR and the U.S. Navy the understanding and tools needed for transitioning fuel cells to the fleet." Amazon gets US patent for 'countermeasures' to protect drone delivery Amazon was awarded a technology patent for a system of "countermeasures of threats to an uncrewed autonomous vehicle." The system is based on a mesh network and communication between multiple drones that detect possible signs of a compromise. Precisionhawk Research Outlines Operations Risk for Drones Flying Beyond Line of Sight Under the FAA Pathfinder Program, PrecisionHawk's Phase 2 research indicates technology assist is critical for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations. PrecisionHawk found that human control is subject to variability and cannot be relied upon exclusively for safe BVLOS flight. Good situational awareness technology is also needed. Drone Registration Marks First Anniversary December 21, 2016, marked the one-year anniversary of the FAA web-based drone registration system. More than 600,000 owners have registered and the FAA calls the system “an unqualified success.” Also, “The rule and the registration system were primarily aimed at the thousands of drone hobbyists who had little or no experience with the U.S. aviation system. The agency saw registration as an excellent way to give them a sense of responsibility and accountability for their actions. The agency wanted them to feel they are part of the aviation community, to see themselves as pilots.” One-Year Anniversary of the FAA's Drone Registry http://youtu.be/gQyedp8vmk0 Videos of the Week Watch the 6 Most Innovative Drone Videos of 2016 Time selected six drone videos they considered to be those that most challenged our perspectives: The Nature Video Perfected The Destruction of Aleppo The Construction of Apple Campus 2 The Tight Squeeze Approach The Single Shot Approach The Top Down Approach Human Flying Drone This super heavy lift multirotor has enough power to lift a man.
