En la segunda mitad de los años 80 había una rivalidad entre dos grupos de aficionados… Entre los defensores del Opel Kadett GSi y del VW Golf GTi era aún más acalorada. Y hoy vamos a responder a la pregunta de cuál es mejor. Y me voy a mojar. Para entender estas historias es bueno saber la línea temporal de los acontecimientos. En 1974 había aparecido el Golf MKI y en 1983 aparece el VW Golf MKII y, frase típica de este canal que no todos pueden decir es esta: “yo estuve allí… Solo un año después, en 1984, aparece el VW Golf GTi de la segunda generación, con motor de 8 válvulas, y de nuevo, yo estuve allí, en esa presentación. Por su parte el Opel Kadett, el de tracción delantera, porque la denominación Kadett aparece en 1937, aparece en 1979 pero lo conozco bien, porque fue uno de los primeros coches que probñe como profesional. Y en 1984, como respuesta a VW, aparece el Kadett GSi de 8 válvulas… y sí, yo estuve allí en esa presentación. La lucha entre Opel y VW o entre VW y Opel continua y en 1986 VW lanza el Golf GTi 16 válvulas de la segunda generación y Opel responde solo un año más tarde, en 1987, lanzando su Opel Kadett GSi 16v… en ambos casos, en ambas presentaciones “yo estuve allí” ... y los probé y comprobé, juntos o por separado en multitud de ocasiones. Lo importante de todas estas fechas es ver como Opel y VW se marcaban estrechamente una a la otra y como respondían cada marca a los movimientos del rival. Vamos a comenzar a hablar de estos coches. Y comenzamos por el chasis y bastidor. Para mí, lo asombroso del Golf en todas sus versiones y en especial en la GTi no era lo bien que iba, era eficaz, progresivo y cómodo. ¿Era malo el Kadett? Malo no, peor que el Golf sí. Menos refinado, no era tan preciso como el Golf, ni tan cómodo. Daba la sensación de que el equilibro entre muelle y amortiguador no era tan bueno, con muelles más duros y amortiguadores más blandos… Todo esto en las versiones básicas, incluso en el GSi de 2 litros, 8 válvulas y 130 CV, pasaba más desapercibido… pero no en el 16V. Ahora hablemos de motores. El motor del Golf era un 1.8 litros, exactamente 1.781 cm3, de 112 CV. Y como en el bastidor, técnicamente no tenía ninguna solución muy original, pero iba muy bien… lo sé porque lo probé muchas veces e incluso ¡tuve uno! ya como clásico. Igual que VW tenía “mano” para los bastidores, Opel la tenía para los motores. Para empezar, jugaba con ventaja, una ventaja del más del 12 por ciento en cilindrada, 1.998 cm3 frente a los citados 1.781 cm3. La ventaja en potencia era incluso mayor, 130 CV frente a los 112 CV del Golf. Y eso se notaba. Y como VW era de esas marcas a la que no les gustaba el turbo, se decidió por las 4 válvulas por cilindro. Pero todo lo bueno que era ese motor con 8 válvulas no lo era con 16. La potencia crecía hasta los 139 CV, pero el par no era mucho y llegaba muy arriba, a casi 5.000 rpm. Era un motor sin bajos y algo perezoso subiendo de vueltas… una mala combinación. En cambio, las 16 válvulas le sentaron de maravilla al dos litros de Opel que era, sencillamente, perfecto. Según las fuentes y según fuese catalizado o no podrás ver anunciados entre 150 y 160 CV… y en banco no solo conseguía esa potencia, incluso la superaba. Y aunque el par lo anunciaba a un régimen alto, de 4.800 rpm… a ese régimen ya superaba al Golf en potencia. Lo decía al comenzar, sencillamente, perfecto, porque además era robusto y no gastaba demasiado. ¡Nos ponemos al volante! Comenzamos con los 8 válvulas. Y la verdad es que el motor Opel es fantástico, pero salvo en conducción muy deportiva, donde los caballos mandan, el excelente motor del Golf se defiende muy bien. En carreteras con muchas curvas la mayor seguridad que inspira el Golf hace que puedas entrar más rápido, que puedas “atacar” mejor los vértices y entonces la diferencia de potencia pasa a un segundo plano. En los frenos no hay grandes diferencias y en cuanto al manejo del cambio es muy bueno en el Opel y mejor en el Golf. Son los modelos tope de gama donde te juegas el prestigio. En este caso el Golf sigue mostrando un comportamiento impecable y buena motricidad… con su motor, claro está, porque no corre demasiado. Sobre esto, volveremos. ¿Y el Kadett? Pues el potente motor sí pone en un aprieto al bastidor. Lo de menos son las pérdidas de motricidad en curvas cerradas, que puedes controlar con tacto de gas, lo de más es que al límite, en curvas medias y rápidas, el tren trasero es muy vivo…y a veces tiene vida propia. En buenas manos no es un coche peligroso… pero en buenas manos. Le sucede un poco como el R5 GT Turbo, que no es peligroso, simplemente corre una barbaridad… y en GSi 16 válvulas corre todavía más, mucho más. Dije que iba a volver sobre la motricidad, esas pérdidas de adherencia en la rueda interior del GSi cuando acelerabas fuerte en curva lenta. Leí en la prensa de la época que el Golf GTi 16V tenía mucha mejor motricidad que el Kadett GSi 16v… ¿en serio? ¿Qué pasaría si al Golf le metes la “bestia” del motor Opel? Pues seguro que “pierde” rueda igual. Conclusión. Como coche divertido, práctico y asequible, sin duda el ganador sería el VW Golf GTi normalito, el de 8 válvulas, que es delicioso, refinado, corre lo suficiente, gasta poco y es una roca. El Golf 16V no aporta mucho. Pero si quieres un deportivo de verdad, que corra, que te exija y que te de sensaciones, el GSi 16V es definitivo. El GSi de 8 válvulas va muy bien, pero es que la diferencia… ¡es brutal! Si de estos cuatro coches tengo que elegir uno y solo uno, para mí, no para otra persona… creo que me conocéis bien… ¿cuál creéis que elijaría? El Opel Kadett GSi 16V… es una bestia y a mí me gustan estos coches que hay que domar, que exigen a su conductor. Y para los que piensen que estoy loco os digo una cosa: Si vas a ritmo más lento, es una madre, no es un coche peligroso ni mucho menos. Las cosas se complican cuando le buscas “las cosquillas” … sin duda, mejor en circuito. He probado este coche con algunos ajustes de suspensiones y buenos neumáticos en circuito y os aseguro que creo que es el tracción delantera más divertido de conducir que recuerdo en este momento.

And Jason theorizes that SEC owners likely had even more still.  Speaking of the Mercedes, Jason laments that the new SL63's posterior profile looks suspiciously Porsche 911-y, but the duplicative flattery appears to date all the way back to the Porsche 356 and the contemporary Mercedes-Benz W198 300 SL Gullwing.   In other news, Motor Trend Video is dead, and Jason is deeply empathetic.  After the mourning, we delve into the next drag race episode: cars under $35,000! This episode pits the latest crop of cheap speed against one another in bracketed races with nearly every drivetrain orientation: naturally aspirated, turbocharged, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, manual, automatic, DCT, and so on. Unabashed boosted 4-cylinder noises assault the senses and appease the Abarth gods. Our first race pits the front-wheel drive cars against one another: the Hyundai Elantra N races the Mk8 Volkswagen GTI and the new F66 Mini Cooper S – which is completely overlooked by enthusiasts in 2024 (and is too cutesy for its own good), yet somehow manages to be effortlessly quick and best the OG hot hatch GTI.  Then, the second race includes the rear- and all-wheel drive cars: the rwd Ford Mustang EcoBoost races the rwd Toyota GR86, the awd Subaru WRX and the surprisingly quick Mazda 3 Turbo AWD.  And all Jason wants for Christmas is a GR86/FR-S/BRZ hatchback with a K24.  Learn more about your ad choices. Antes de comenzar por los coches, solo 10, ¡me ha costado mucho decidirme! vamos a definir que es un coche mítico. Porque en el vídeo titulado “5 coches míticos que no merecen serlo” contamos “¿cómo nace un mito?” pero no “¿Qué es un mito?”. Para ello recurro a la RAE, la Real Academia de la Lengua Española. Las dos primeras definiciones encajan más con personas y-o historias, pero en la tercera acepción, la que más me gusta para está ocasión, dice que mito es “persona o cosa rodeada de extraordinaria admiración y estima.” Así que un coche mítico es aquel que despierta “extraordinaria admiración y estima”. Hay una cuarta acepción que dice que un mito es: “Persona o cosa a la que se atribuyen cualidades o excelencias que no tiene”. Esta definición desbarata mis argumentos de “Coches que son míticos y no lo merecen” porque resulta que se puede ser un mito, sin merecerlo… ¡Ay Dios mío! Hoy toca centrarse en aquellos que lo son y sí lo merecen y volvemos a los argumentos que di en mi primer vídeo para responder a la pregunta clave: ¿Cómo nace un mito? Esta pregunta tiene muchas respuestas, porque debe tener, al menos, alguna o algunas de estas cualidades: - Un diseño espectacular, en su momento y en la actualidad. - Aportar un avance técnico o varios sin precedentes. - Influir en el diseño de otros modelos. - Convertirse en un coche de masas. - Méritos deportivos. - Influir o cambiar por completo una sociedad. - Por último y para mí una cualidad imprescindible, para que un coche sea mítico debe tener una personalidad. Todos los coches que están en esta lista cumplen no una, sino más de una de estas condiciones. Así que sin más vamos con la lista. 1. Ford T (1908). Histórico. 2. Jeep Willys (1941). El “precursor” de todos los TT. 3. Citroën DS (1955). Muy adelantado a su tiempo. 4. Jaguar E (1961). Bonito y barato… le faltó ser bueno. 5. Lamborghini Miura (1966). Con él nacen los “Superdeportivos”. 6. Chevrolet Corvette (1967). “Más americano que la Coca Cola”. 7. Volkswagen Golf GTi (1976). Los deportivos dejaron de ser Coupés. 8. Audi Quattro (1980). Marcó un “antes” y un “después”. 9. Ferrari Testarossa (1984). Acuñó la palabra “Testarro”. 10. Lancia Delta Integrale (1987). Indiscutible rey de los Rallyes. Conclusión. La de siempre en estas listas: No están todos los que son, pero espero que sean todos los que están… os leo en comentarios. The Volkswagen Golf GTI is rolling into 2023 with a new trim configuration. Thats among other improvements over model year 2022.  When the hot hatch received it's most recent all-new status. And the four-door 5-seat continues impressing drivers and automotive writers alike. ⇒ iDSC is driven by Ontario Volkswagen 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI Top-3: Drive Value Styling New For 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI So the biggest item on the 'what's new' list is another trim option. And Volkswagen takes the opportunity to mark GTI's 40th Anniversary.  Doing so with a 40th Anniversary trim configuration. But the European carmaker is holding back details.  Because all VW is telling us is the name.  And that it slots between the base-model S and the mid-level SE trims. Other newness for the 2023 VW GTI include LED headlights and foglights.  Plus active cornering lights. 40th Annivesary Edition Trim VW says only 1,500 40th Anniversary Editions will be available in the United States. They have what VW is calling a 40 "clasp" at the bottom of the steering wheel.  Plus Volkswagen's iconic golf-ball inspired shift knob. Also, speciality decals adorn the sides of the 40th Anniversary Edition.  Dipalying "40" and VW's honeycomb. Add to that 19" gloss black multi-spoke wheels with red pinstripe accents.  And only three different exterior colors are available. (Four at first, but Pomelo Yellow Metallic is unavailable.) Thos include Tornado Red - pictured here.  Opal White Peral.  And one of our favorites, Urano Grey. Also, all come with the black painted roof. 40th Anniversary Edition - black painted roof Trims And Prices Here's the full trim configuration line-up for the 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI.  Along with starting MSRPs. Trim Configurations & MSRPs: S $30,180 40th Anniversary Edition $33,055 SE $34,980 Autobahn $38,720 *All starting manufacturers suggested retail prices Engine, Transmission, And MPG As Volkswagen has been providing.  The 2023 VW GTI comes with a single engine. So it doesn't matter which trim configuration you go with.  Because the same inline 4-cylinder is under the hood. And that's a 2.0-liter 16V turbocharged/intercooled.  Putting out 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Leaving you the option of transmissions.  Either a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic.  Or a six-speed manual transmission. For the hot hatch.  My purist pick is always the manual.  But the automatic has paddle shifters.  So when you're commuting or stuck in traffic, you're shaking hands a lot less. Other than the 40th Anniversary Edition, which we're not yet sure of, there's little change for 2023. Because even in Volkswagen's press release materials.  The company is stating "minor cosmetic changes."  And saying as much without specificying what those are!? Still, the GTI remains, without question, VW's hothatch.  Newer, bolder, more athletic.  With it's iconic red accents and GTI badging.  She's a beauty.  In her 2023 attire. The S and SE trimes come with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels while the top of the line Autobahn delivers 19-inch alloys. Exterior dimensions: Wheelbase 103.6 Length 168.8 Height 57.6 Width 70.4 Track: Front 60.4 Rear 59.6 Ground clearance 4.7 *All inches. Curbweight for the 2023 VW Golf GTI depends on the transmission.  For manual trans, it weighs 3,133.  And for automatic, it comes in at 3,206. 241 hp / 273 lb-ft of torque Inside The 2023 VW Golf GTI And inside Golf GTI remains the same as model year 2022 too. Os lo aseguro, este contenido lo he hecho por pura “aclamación popular”, alucino como tantos años después estos coches y este enfrentamiento sigue despertado pasiones. Pero es que además os voy a hablar de coches que he probado mucho, muchas veces, cuando aparecieron y ahora… y además os lo adelanto, ¡me voy a mojar! El ganador de esta comparativa será el “Coche del día” de hoy. Volkswagen Golf MKII GTi 16v. Se podría decir, simplificando un poco, que cuando nace el primer Golf GTi no tiene prácticamente competencia. Pero esto cambia cuando llega el MK2, mucho mejor que el primero, aunque para mí no más bonito… Recordemos que el diseño del primer Golf es obra de Giugaro, pero para el segundo, que básicamente es el mismo agradando, redondeado y “estirado”, en VW pensaron que ellos solo se valían…y así, más o menos, hasta hoy. La versión de 16 válvulas aparece como tope de gama en 1985. Y es que al Golf GTi MKII, que ya sabéis que tengo uno, pocas pegas podían ponérsele, la más seria, quizás, que estaba falto de potencia para el comportamiento que tenía…y para lo que ofrecía ya entonces la competencia. Y el 16V pasa de 112 a 139 CV. Opel Kadett GSi 16v. El Opel Kadett normal, el de 8 válvulas, podías reprocharle que no tenía un comportamiento tan bueno, sobre todo tan “amable” como el conductor como el Golf. O que su acabado no era de la misma calidad… bueno, si no era de la misma calidad, pues era muy próxima… Pero poco más. Porque el motor era mucho más agradable y potente que el del Golf, 18 CV más, y su estética, para mí, mucho más llamativa. Pero tanto sus virtudes como sus defectos se magnifican en el 16v: Su comportamiento ya no es menos amable que el del Golf, es sencillamente, bastante más delicado… pero es que no corre más que el Golf 16V… ¡corre mucho, muchísimo más! El Golf 16V ofrecía 139 CV y el Kadett 156 CV… pero la diferencia era mayor… como ahora veremos. Motores: Diferentes generaciones. Al Golf GTi MKII 16v le podemos considerar el último de esa especie. Y el Kadett GSi 16V el primero de la siguiente raza, en la que los motores de 16 válvulas no solo eran más potentes arriba, sino que lo eran en todos los regímenes. Bueno, y no olvidemos que el Golf era un motor de 1.8 litros y el del Kadett era de 2.0 litros, un 10 por ciento más. Al volante: Cara a cara. Dentro no hay grandes diferencias en cuanto a habitabilidad o posición de conducción. En cuanto al acabado me parece más bonito el del Opel y parecen de la misma calidad, aunque el tiempo ha demostrado que este Golf, como todos los VW, están hechos para durar. Por fuera se nota la mayor modernidad de la carrocería del Opel con un Cx de 0,32 por 0,34 del VW, que es mucho. Esto y la mayor potencia marcan grandes diferencias en cuanto a velocidad máxima, ya que el Golf declaraba 206 km/h difícilmente alcanzables y el Kadett 208 fácilmente superables. Si te ibas a una zona de curvas había que afinar con los dos coches. Con el Golf, porque tenías que acertar con la marcha adecuada en cada curva, porque si no el coche se quedaba prácticamente “muerto”. Por el contrario, con el Kadett nunca te faltaba respuesta… Al contrario, más bien te sobraba, porque la tremenda entrega de potencia, sobre todo a las salidas de curvas lentas, ponía en aprietos al tren delantero, sobre todo a la rueda interior, que patinaba… recordemos, que estos coches no tenían autoblocante. ¿No sabéis qué es? Hemos hecho un vídeo titulado “¿Cómo funciona un autoblocante?”, que te recomiendo. El Opel Kadett, en curva rápida, necesitaba ser conducido con decisión. He leído por ahí que este coche se iba de atrás “de forma brusca e inesperada”. Pues no. Lo hacía en cuanto titubeabas con el acelerador. Con un Kadett, en curva media o rápida, no puedes ahuecar… Por comparación, el Golf, incluso este 16v era, como se dice en el argot, una ¡madre! A pesar de sus suspensiones más rígidas y una gruesa estabilizadora trasera que hacía levantar la rueda trasera interior con facilidad. Coche del día. “And the winner is”… creo que os voy a sorprender: El Opel Kadett GSi 16v. ¡Y eso que tengo un Golf! Pero el Golf puede que sea, entre comillas, “mejor coche”, pero el Kadett es más “emocionante”… y no, no me refiero a que te pueda dar un susto, me refiero a que es un coche que te comunica más emociones… Como coche de cada día cualquier Golf es fantástico, pero como clásico de colección… ¡me quedo con el Kadett!

The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV promises to be one of the most exciting vehicles to hit the road next year. In SS trim it will offer 557 horsepower and 648 lb-ft of torque. That's exciting enough, but it will also be offered in a number of much more accessible versions, leveraging the General Motors Ultium platform, in a vehicle that could challenge the Tesla Model Y. To learn more about this amazing new model we went behind the scenes to interview one of the key members of the Chevy Blazer EV team, Our special guest is Bret Dick, the lead development engineer for the innovative vehicle. He'll reveal how the Ultium platform enabled Chevrolet to offer so many intriguing versions of the vehicle. There is sad news to report as well. A legendary American brand is saying goodbye to a pair of its signature models, and we'll give you the details in this episode of America on the Road. The brand is Dodge, and its executives have just announced that it will cease producing the Dodge Charger and the Dodge Challenger at the conclusion of the 2023 model year. In the meantime, Dodge plans to celebrate (mourn?) the passing of the two iconic performance cars by offering a plethora of special editions. We'll tell you about them. Also in the news, recently enacted federal legislation signed by the White House ends the longstanding $7,500 tax credit for the purchase of an electric vehicle. In its place is a much more complicated series of credits and incentives for consumers and global automakers. The big question is will it hurt the sales of electric vehicles? We'll try to sort it out for you coming up. This week Co-Host Chris Teague is back with us after a home disaster that prevented him from being on the show last week. The good news is he got plenty of additional time to drive the exciting 2022 Hyundai Elantra N. He'll let us know whether the road test vehicle is the match for his recently purchased Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Volkswagen Golf is entering its eighth generation. It's almost hard to believe that Volkswagen's beloved hatchback is nearing 50 years in production. Still, VW's Golf is giving hatchback fans a well-sorted and continually confident option. Well, that's the case at least in the United States with the performance variants of the Golf, which fill the void for the departed base model. The 2022 Golf GTI is the entry point to VW Golfs in the US, and that's not a bad thing. The latest Volkswagen Golf sticks to the same MQB platform as the outgoing generation, and sports an updated version of the same powertrain. This version of VW's EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill sends 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. Controlling that power is either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic. Our end-of-the-year episode highlights testers' personal highs and lows of the year. These cars don't necessarily bracket our formal ratings, but they stand out in our collective memory. We really like cars that balance sport and practicality, with positive votes for the Porsche Macan, BMW M235i, and Volkswagen Golf/GTI. Minority votes also went to the Range Rover, Subaru Outback, and Chevrolet SS. Cars that made our least-liked list generally promised more than they delivered. Despite its storied marque, several of us dissed the Maserati Ghibli for falling short of luxury sport car expectations. Other cars earning brickbats include the Chrysler 200, Mercedes-Benz GLA and CLA, and the Infiniti Q50. Reaching beyond 2014, some of us dug up some older-introduced cars that still bug them today.
