Numsa to picket the Japanese embassy on future of Nissan plant; Nissan denies closure rumours

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says it will be picketing the Japanese Embassy in Pretoria on Friday. The union intends to hand over a memorandum of demands regarding a “number of grievances” against Nissan's management in South Africa. Included in the list of demands is clarity on what Numsa says is the Japanese car maker's failure to engage the union on its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions, and transparency on the future of the South African plant. “ . . . Some workers are likely to be displaced because the new {EV] technology is not labour intensive,” says Numsa in a statement. “Workers want to know what the plans are and whether they will be trained and upskilled to adjust to the new technology. “There are also plans to terminate at least 150 fixed-term contracts at the plant, and rumours that the Nissan plant [in Pretoria] will be moved to Egypt, thus threatening the livelihoods of over 1 200 workers.” Nissan Ambition 2030 will see the car maker accelerate the electrification of its vehicle line-up with investments of 2-trillion yen over the next five years. Nissan says it will introduce 23 new electrified models, including 15 new EVs by fiscal year 2030, aiming for an electrification mix of more than 50% globally across the Nissan and Infiniti brands. Nissan SA last year started production of the Nissan Navara pickup for the local and selected export markets. Production at the plant reached just more than 22 500 units last year. Some Contracts Coming to an End, Says Nissan SA Nissan SA says it is incorrect that “150 workers have been released”. The company notes, however, that there are a number of fixed-term contractors in its manufacturing operations whose fixed-term contracts have come to an end. “Resourcing needs are currently being reviewed, taking into account operational requirements, along with micro- and macro-factors, such as semi-conductor availability.” The global auto industry has been battling a shortage of computer-chips since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nissan SA says it “remains committed to maintaining open engagements with Numsa and key stakeholders in order to find mutually beneficial resolutions”. The local arm of the Japanese manufacturer also denies that it is shutting its doors. “Africa has been identified as the last frontier of automotive growth and, to this end, Nissan has expansion plans across the continent. “This is evidenced by the recent R3-billion investment into the South African manufacturing plant and skills development of employees to locally manufacture the new Nissan Navara. “With a six-decade legacy of producing light commercial vehicles, the strategic goal is to establish Nissan's South Africa operation to be the continental light commercial vehicle hub.” It also does not seem as if Nissan's Rosslyn plant will soon produce EVs. “Our Rosslyn facility's primary strategic role in our broader global business is focused on continuing to manufacture LCVs for the African market,” says Nissan SA. “The future of the EV ecosystem in South Africa, including supply and demand, is currently at policy formulating phase. Key stakeholders . . . are actively co-creating the country's EV policy. Ultimately, it will be policy that guides [vehicle manufacturer] activity moving forward.”

The next Mitsubishi Triton (called the L200 in other markets) will look like a Triton, but it will be a Nissan Navara under the skin. The Navarafication of Triton is a disaster for Mitsubishi (and Triton aficionados - of which I am one) and in fact the Tritonification of Navara is a far superior concept with nothing but upside for Navara (not to mention Triton) - but never underestimate the gross stupidity of large organisations. The Government's scheme for discounts for electric cars comes with a couple of fishhooks: it only applies to newly imported cars, and if the funding runs out the rebates scheme will be paused and cars bought during the pause will not qualify for a rebate. The scheme is designed so rebates on electric cars are funded from fees paid by people buying petrol cars.It provides for rebates of $8625 for a new electric car and $3450 for a used imported electric car. There are lower rebates for plug-in hybrids. The rebates are due to start from July 1 – but Waka Kotahi's website warns that if the funding for the scheme runs dry the rebates will be stopped until the funds are replenished."If, due to high demand, rebate funds are exhausted, Waka Kotahi will notify that the rebate window is closed and no discounts (rebates) will be offered during this time. Once we announce the scheme has restarted, only vehicles registered from the restart date will be eligible for rebates."While there are rebates for both new and used electric cars, they only apply to newly imported cars which are registered after July 1. They do not apply to electric cars which are already registered in New Zealand and being sold on.The rebates side of the "feebate" scheme starts in July, buyers of new or newly imported used petrol cars will only start facing fees from January next year. There is another reason to get in quick to get the full rebate under the scheme: for the first six months, a flat rebate will apply, giving the full $8,625 rebate for all new electric cars and $3450 for used. After that, the rebate will depend on emissions.A spokesman for Transport Minister Michael Wood said a Crown loan would cover the first six months of the scheme and the fees were expected to cover it from then on.The details of the fees scheme are yet to be finalised, but the Ministry of Transport has estimated those fees will raise $125m and $188m in 2022.Buyers of new petrol cars would pay a fee of up to $5875 while those buying newly imported used cars face fees of up to $2875.That fee would be based on emissions – the Ministry has said it would add $2,900 to the cost of a new Toyota Hilux, $1230 to a Kia Sportage, and $830 for a Nissan Navara.Wood and Climate Change Minister James Shaw set out the scheme on Sunday, saying it was a critical move to try to reduce New Zealand's transport emissions. It was aimed at lifting the use of electric cars in New Zealand, which Wood said was well behind other countries. The decision to charge fees for petrol car buyers has been criticised as unfair by Act and National, who say it is a "tax" on tradespeople and farmers who do not have options for electric vehicles.National's spokesman Michael Woodhouse has said National supports incentives for electric car buyers, but they should be measures such as tax benefits and road user charges exemptions."The people who benefit will be higher-income earners who now don't have to pay as much for a Tesla. We don't think it's fair to make tradies pay more for a Hilux so wealthy executives can get a discount on their next electric car."

Nissan to set up new assembly facility in Ghana with Japan Motors

Nissan has appointed Japan Motors Trading as its local partner in setting up a new vehicle assembly facility in Accra, Ghana. The appointment flows from a 2018 memorandum of understanding signed between Nissan and the government of Ghana. Ghana has since also adopted a government policy to aid the development of a domestic automotive manufacturing industry. The first model to be assembled at the new facility will be the new Nissan Navara pickup, unveiled by Nissan earlier in November. The new model will be produced to specifications created for the African market. Once operational, the Ghana facility will add to Nissan’s existing African production capacity at plants in South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria. The Japanese car maker says the continued development of its African manufacturing base is a key part of the company’s regional midterm strategy under the Nissan NEXT global transformation plan. “The announcement demonstrates Nissan’s ongoing commitment to investing in Ghana, as well as [its support for] the expansion of the country’s automotive sector through the Ghana Automotive Development Policy. “Ghana presents a great opportunity for investment, partnership and growth for Nissan,” notes Nissan South Africa MD Shinkichi Izumi. “Establishing a long-term automotive industrial development policy will provide investors with further confidence, boost the local economy and create jobs. We look forward to the continued partnership as Japan Motors officially begins assembling Nissan vehicles in Ghana.” Construction of the new facility is already underway, as are the recruitment and appointment of new employees, and a process of skills development and technical training to apply Nissan’s global quality production standards. “Japan Motors sees great potential in Ghana,” says Japan Motors MD Salem Kalmoni. “We’re thrilled to make this significant investment and to be in a partnership that will unlock job opportunities and contribute to the economic development of Ghana. With world-class training, the local assembly plant will deliver an excellent product to meet our customers’ needs.”

In the one-tonneute market, there is a wide variety of customer needs. Much publicity has been given to the ‘7 day a week' segment that favours the dual cab where the ute tray might be used for carrying tools during the week but the vehicle has a specific function with the family and on weekends it is more likely to be carrying bikes or surf boards in the back. When the all new Navara was launch nearly two years ago, Nissan proudly spoke of the 27 different model specifications that covered single cab, king cab and dual cab configurations with a chassis or pickup tray. But no amount of internal review can guarantee the moving target that is customer desires. Nissan has now released the series 2 version of the new Navara and have added another specification level across all their model configurations. Originally aired on 25 March 2017.
