Have we, as the design field, contributed to the erosion of our social fabric over the last years...I had a big week recently. My daughter received the news about which high school she'll be attending next year. In the Netherlands, we have a lottery system for high schools; you list multiple options and hope fortune smiles upon you for your first choice. The second option on my daughter's list involved a 45-minute bike ride, which is quite a journey, even by Dutch standards.A few weeks prior, we'd made that bike ride together to visit the school. Reflecting on those 45 minutes, it struck me.The experience is, of course, completely different when you make that journey alone compared to when you're riding alongside your best friend to school.Suddenly, those 45 minutes take on a totally new meaning. So, in this case to make the journey more enjoyable, you don't have to redesign the roads, you need to design for connection. This got me thinking: What if we shifted our focus in design? What would happen if we started designing more for groups instead of just individuals, for 'together' instead of 'alone,' for co-experience and communities? And what is the price we pay if we don't? It seems that many other fields already embraced the importance of community, while design seems to be trailing behind, why is that? These questions have been going through my mind a lot lately. That's why I was particularly excited to chat with James Lang. James, a founder of the collective Together by Design, has spent the last few years deeply immersed in the world of community design. In this episode, we explore why community design is an essential, yet often overlooked, part of the service design toolkit and share practical ways to build stronger connections through design. So if you're looking to design better, more humane services while strengthening our communities at the same time, this is the perfect episode for you.James and I had a fun debate about the art and science of knowing if your community is "working". I'm curious which side you'll lean towards after listening.Keep making a positive impact and design for community!~ Marc--- [ 1. In this episode of Speaking of Higher Ed, we welcome acclaimed author and teaching expert Dr. James Lang to explore one of the most pressing topics in higher education today: academic integrity in the age of generative AI. Drawing from his influential book Cheating Lessons, Lang shares practical, research-based strategies for designing learning environments that reduce cheating and enhance student motivation. At the heart of the discussion is the argument that academic dishonesty often arises not from “bad” students, but from the pressures and pitfalls of ineffective course design. Lang outlines key environmental factors—such as extrinsic motivation, high-stakes assessments, and low self-efficacy—that contribute to cheating, and offers concrete ways faculty can design courses that support learning while discouraging misconduct. He also reflects on how generative AI has intensified these challenges, and how faculty can respond with next-generation assessments that promote metacognition and student voice. Later in the conversation, Lang turns to his newest book, Write Like You Teach, which encourages faculty to bring the clarity and accessibility of their classroom teaching into their writing. He shares advice on how academics can communicate their work to broader audiences and engage the public in meaningful ways. Whether you're a new instructor or a seasoned professor, this episode blends theory and actionable insights for both your teaching and your writing life. Get free access to more of our content, visit our show page for full episodes and additional resources.

fWotD Episode 2516: 1876 Scotland v Wales football match Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Monday, 25 March 2024 is 1876 Scotland v Wales football match. The 1876 association football match between the national teams representing Scotland and Wales was the first game played by the latter side. It took place on 25 March 1876 at Hamilton Crescent, Partick, the home ground of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. The match was also the first time that Scotland had played against a side other than England. The fixture was organised by Llewelyn Kenrick, who had founded the Football Association of Wales (FAW) only a few weeks earlier in response to a letter published in The Field. Advertisements were placed in several sporting journals for Welsh players, or those with more than three years residence in the country, to come forward and the Welsh team was selected after trial matches were held at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham. The FAW selected the side and Kenrick was appointed captain for the fixture. As the more experienced team, Scotland dominated the match and had several chances to score in the first half. They had a goal disallowed after scoring directly from a corner kick, before taking the lead after 40 minutes through John Ferguson. In the early stages of the second half, Wales attempted to play more openly to find a goal, but the Scottish side took advantage of their opponent's inexperience and scored two further goals. The first was a rebound off the goalpost which was converted by Billy MacKinnon; the second was headed in by debutant James Lang. Scotland added a fourth through Henry McNeil and claimed a victory in front of a crowd of around 17,000 people, a record for an international fixture at the time. The two nations have met frequently since this first match, playing against each other every year in friendly matches until 1884 when the British Home Championship was introduced. The competition was an annual tournament, and Scotland and Wales played a fixture against each other every year until 1984, apart from when competitive football was suspended during the First and Second World Wars. In total, the two sides have played more than 100 matches against each other since the first meeting. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:08 UTC on Monday, 25 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1876 Scotland v Wales football match on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Geraint Standard.

Teaching faculty regularly help novices acquire new knowledge and skills. These same skills allow faculty to write effectively for audiences beyond their academic disciplines. In this episode, James Lang joins us to discuss his new book that is designed to help faculty write for broader audiences. Jim is the author of six books, the most recent of which are: Distracted: Why Students Can't Focus and What You Can Do About It, Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning (now in a second edition); Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty; and On Course: A Week-by-Week Guide to Your First Semester of College Teaching. He is currently working on a new book, tentatively titled: Write Like a Teacher. A former Professor of English and the Director of the D'Amour Center for Teaching Excellence at Assumption University, he stepped down from full-time academic work in 2021 to concentrate more fully on his writing and teaching. Jim has served as a keynote speaker and workshop leader at over 100 colleges and universities, including SUNY Oswego. I am trying something new that I learned from the Happiness Lab and creating a mini-season based on what I know about learning, the brain and (meta)cognition. In this first episode, I define learning, using the book Distracted: Why Students Can't Focus and What You Can Do About It, by James Lang. The 3 steps of learning are 1) attention, 2) processing/encoding (starting with holding information in short-term memory) and 3) "learning," which is defined as either incorporating the information into our existing frameworks of knowledge or rewriting our existing frameworks to account for the new information. I give examples of each and help explain why I use mind maps, recall practice and minute papers (and games) in my classes so much. Action item: go back and listen to this episode a second time with a pen and piece of paper and see what you can learn about learning!

What does the movie Moneyball, the story of the 2014 Kansas City Royals professional baseball team's adoption of small incremental practices that brought them from obscurity to the World Series, have to do with teaching more effectively? This movie was the inspiration for the book Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning by James Lang (2016). Like the incremental practices that got the Royals on base to score runs, the underlying principle here is the same. Small, incremental educational practices that increase learner engagement drive better learning than passive listening to the professor in the classroom or the faculty member telling students and residents things in the clinic or on hospital rounds. Join Drs. Jerry Rabalais and Staci Saner as they discuss easy, practical things that can be done by the faculty member in both the classroom or in the clinical teaching environment to increase learner engagement and therefore learning significantly. Today's episode is a bit of a departure from our norm, but it stemmed from one of our actual hallway conversations in which one of us started talking about a book we were reading. Pretty soon, another person said, “We should have an episode where we just share some of our favorite books!” And so, here it is, dear listeners: we each brought two books to recommend, and we invented a protocol for sharing that we call “2 by 2 by 2”: 2 books, 2 things about each book, and 2 minutes to talk about each book. (We absolutely failed at sticking to this protocol, so we need to refine it a bit.) We hope you might find some summer reading suggestions here!
