How Psychological Safety Drives Digital Transformation and the Toyota Production System (or Lean)

Lean Blog Audio

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2025 8:04

The blog postBefore I departed for my recent workshop tour of Australia and New Zealand, I knew that I would learn things in the process of teaching and facilitating on my favorite topics. I didn't expect to learn about flying koalas, though!I did expect to learn something when I had the opportunity to meet up for lunch with a friend, former Toyota Australia leader Barry McCarthy. Barry's also the chair of this year's AME International Conference in St. Louis. I first met Barry back in 2018 when I went on a Japan Study trip with Barry and the Honsha Consulting team, and I learned a lot from him on that trip (check out my podcast with him about these topics).Toyota and Psychological Safety–A New BookIn recent years, I've come to believe that Psychological Safety is the oft-unheralded foundation of the Toyota Production System and Lean Management. Former Toyota Kentucky leader Mike Hoseus agrees, as we discussed in this Lean Blog Interviews episode — and as mentioned in the book Toyota Culture, that Mike co-authored with Jeff Liker.I've learned a lot from Barry about Toyota as a “human development company,” as we discussed in his episode. He agrees with me about the direct importance of Psychological Safety at Toyota — and that it's something they intentionally nurture. One new piece of direct evidence of this is a book that was published, in Japanese, back in late 2023. The title can be translated to English as:Two kata that realize psychological safety and speed up work that supports Toyota-style DX: “How to speak” and “How to proceed with work” that resonate with young peopleBarry shared his summary of the book (as translated by him via Google) and I ordered it from Amazon Japan based on his recommendation. When I got home, the book was waiting for me.“DX” is jargon (an abbreviation) for “digital transformation,” something that's increasingly important to Toyota.Back to the title — I suspect that “make work flow better” might be a better translation since we don't normally try to “speed up work” directly through the Lean methodology. Lean is more about reducing and eliminating barriers to flow and not a matter of pressuring people to work faster. The ChatGPT translation of the title says:“Supporting Toyota-Style DX: Two Kata That Achieve Psychological Safety and Speed in Work”“A way of speaking that resonates with young workers” and“A way to move work forward”I've been running pages through ChatGPT as a translation tool. It's incredibly fast. You take a photo of a page (or pages) and out comes the translation. I've been uploading photos in a batch size of “chapter” so ChatGPT can perhaps look at the full context of the chapter instead of only seeing page by page. Before jumping into what Psychological Safety is, the book poses a problem statement:“A diagnostic list for managers–if you mark 3 or more “yes,” you should seriously reconsider your current management style. Examples include:“I've never said ‘thank you' to a team member today.”“I find the word ‘challenge' cringeworthy.”“I haven't talked to anyone outside my own department.”“I tend to suppress my real opinions at work.”I think a good question for leaders is: “Do you remember the last time an employee disagreed with you?” If the answer is “no,” then you have a problem.(1) What is Psychological Safety?“Being able to express honest opinions, candid doubts, and even disagree with others for the sake of organizational or team results–without fear.”— Atsusuke Ishii, 2020, Japanese Management Skills Association

France's plugin electric vehicle (EV) market share reached 23.8% in February, with full electrics driving the growth, while traditional combustion-only powertrains declined to 49%. The Dacia Spring remains the best-selling full electric, followed by Tesla's Model Y and Peugeot e208. Mazda North American Operations reported its best-ever February sales in the US, while the newly introduced Mazda MX-30 electric vehicle (EV) is not selling well in the US with only two sales in February. A minority German political party, the Free Democratic Party (FDP), is attempting to block the EU regulation to ban internal combustion light vehicles by 2035. The FDP wants biofuel-powered vehicles to be exempt, hoping to support the German car industry, but the EU regulation is necessary to ensure the transition to fully electric vehicles. General Motors (GM) has announced its partnership with Samsung SDI to build a joint venture plant in Michigan, USA, marking the company's second partnership with an automaker in North America. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 50 GWh. Li Auto is building an 800 V high-voltage supercharging station in China, indicating preparations for a transition to pure electric vehicles. The company plans to accumulate 3,000 supercharging stations by 2025. Tesla has reduced the price of new inventory Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in Europe by 1.5% to 7%, with savings varying across different countries. This likely comes as Tesla looks to increase its market share in the competitive European market, following similar strategies it has implemented in China. Tesla will start selling the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit for the Model S Plaid, enabling the sporty sedan to reach its advertised top speed of 200 mph. The kit will cost $20,000 and is expected to be released in limited quantities. Tesla is recalling 3,470 Model Y cars due to an issue with seat bolts that could affect the seat belt system in a collision. Unlike previous recalls that could be resolved via over-the-air software updates, this recall requires a physical fix. Our Next Energy has been selected by BHE Renewables to provide energy storage units to a solar-powered manufacturing hub in West Virginia worth $500 million. The EV battery startup will also build a factory on the site to assemble more battery storage systems. EverCharge and PassKey are collaborating to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to supplement EverCharge's EV charging stations. The BESS will be used to consolidate power during off-peak hours and deploy the energy via EV charging stations during periods of high demand. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, which is prevalent in China, is gaining ground in the US electric vehicle market as manufacturers look to embrace its cheaper cost and safety, despite holding less energy per pound than nickel-rich batteries. Our Next Energy will begin producing LFP batteries in Michigan this month, expanding next year after opening a new $1.6bn plant, and by 2027, it intends to supply enough LFP batteries for 200,000 EVs. Incoming Toyota CEO Koji Sato is calling for big changes in the way Toyota does business after the company acknowledged that Tesla has leapfrogged them in battery-powered cars, inspiring Toyota to regroup and find better solutions. Toyota is already working on a new EV platform to go into production in 2026. Greenpeace has lodged a complaint with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) accusing Toyota Australia of greenwashing, claiming the car manufacturer's claims about its environmental credentials are misleading. The complaint comes after an ACCC review found that 57% of 247 Australian companies reviewed had made "concerning" claims about their environmental credentials. Xcel Energy's plan to install approximately 730 EV fast chargers in Minnesota, which would make it the largest utility-owned charging system in the country, has sparked opposition from various stakeholders, including the gas station and EV charging industries, the Minnesota Department of Commerce, and consumers. While Xcel hopes to jump-start the slow EV market in Minnesota, critics argue that Xcel's market power as a monopoly utility would crowd out private investment, ultimately slowing EV growth. Over two-thirds of planned lithium-ion battery production in Europe is at risk of being delayed, scaled down or cancelled, due to American subsidies and slow permitting processes, warns a report by Transport & Environment. Without EU-wide financial support to scale up battery production, Europe will not be able to satisfy its battery demand in 2030 and will need to import from foreign rivals. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is vulnerable to cyberattacks, according to cybersecurity experts. There are concerns that the rush to create a comprehensive charging infrastructure could come at the expense of cybersecurity.

Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast

We're back for episode 167! This week we actually have some car news to talk about, which is a nice change of pace given the year that 2020's been. Mitch then starts the news part of the pod with Nissan dropping photos of the 'Z Proto', and that Volkswagen is close to selling Bugatti to Croatian company Rimac in exchange for a bigger share of the company. Matt then has news about a new special edition to the Ford Ranger, which comes with a 1" lift from factory as 32" tyres. We then discuss at length the announcement from Toyota Australia the pricing for the GR Yaris, which is more expensive than we were all hoping ti would be, and Matt talks about the Foton F-Truck copy which we all really like, and Ford Australia confirming the Bronco will not be coming to Australia in any official capacity (we think maybe PerforMax might import and convert to RHD). Matt then talks about Mitsubishi introducing a 10 year / 200,00Km warranty, which gets us talking about how awful 'official' service centres, and General Motors bringing the C8 Corvette to Australia by the end of the year under the 'General Motors Special Vehicles' brand (GMSV) and holy-balls it's not cheap. We then play a guess the car game with Matt, and Mitch talks about the progress on the #Shitegra, and Matt talks about his LandCruiser giving him a heart attack while driving home from a wedding. Gears and Beers Podcast is hosted by Mitchell Denham, Matthew Morwood, and Joseph Riga Unashamedly Unprofessional

Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast

We are back for episode 160! This week, Mitch kicks off some news about the new Toyota/Gazoo Racing Yaris with Toyota Australia now caving and will bring the 'Performance Pack' variant to the Australian market. The pricing of the 'base' model GR Yaris is estimated to be about $40,000 (before on-roads), and add about $4,000 for the Performance Pack. Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast

We are back for episode 157! This week we talk a bit of news, Joel and Mitch of what have we done to our cars this week, and Matt and Mitch talk about some simracing stuff. Mitch then kicks off news about Hyundai India producing a manual gearbox WITHOUT a clutch, we then go on to talking about how some cars have great clutch feel, and others have basically no feel at all. Joseph then talks about a factory-fresh EK Civic Si Coupe selling for $50,000 USD in the States, which is unbelievable for an econo-box to now be a collector's car. Matt then talks about how he thinks that Toyota Australia is potentially struggling to sell the new A90 Supra, offering 1.8% finance. Matt then transitions onto how he and Mitch have been getting more serious about SimRacing (Assetto Corsa on PC). Mitch then talks about what he's done to the Integra #Shitegra recently, some of it is bad news, most of it is good news. Joel then talks about the progress he's made on his Suzuki Swift. We then talk about Joseph getting a flat at a Bunnings, resulting in him getting the tyre plugged; which leads into a semi-argument about whether or not he will be right to race the next day out at Ipswich / Queensland Raceway. Matt then talks about why his LandCruiser isn't yet turbocharged. Find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and at www.gearsandbeersmedia.com / www.unashamedlyunprofessional.com We have a merch shop! We're back for episode 103, and this week we have a special guest; Macca Greene from Grip Runner! This week we talk about Macca's extensive car history, flaccid gear shifters, the best driving roads in S.E. Queensland. We then talk about Grip Runner and how it came to be. Grip Runner is an automotive YouTube channel, specialising in automotive culture in Brisbane, as well as an online publication. Matt then cuts in and has a rant about people drifting past his house most Friday nights, which turns into a great discussion about the endless battle between the underground drift/grip scene, governments and police, and 'the media', as well as racetrack noise restrictions. We then talk about Lakeside's latest issues, mounting fines, and noise complaints threaten the track's existence, before talking about the Grip Runner crew and their cars. We then all argue about Gone In 60 Seconds original Vs the Nicholas Cage one, and the Need For Speed movie. Mitch then talks about the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Ascent Sport he's got in for review from Toyota Australia. Video review coming soon! We then talk about the Toyota 86 and why it's better than an S-Chassis. Matt then wants to do something weird, and ask us a few questions inspired by our podcast friends 'Knackers in the Breeze'. The first question he asks is "What is the most enlightened car?" which gets us talking about how some cars have souls, and many don't. The next question Matt asks us is "Would you rather have to drive all day, every day, in a mini-van filled with soccer players warming up for a game, or, one cricket fan on a scooter explaining how great the 90's was?" Huge thanks to Macca for coming on the pod! Make sure you check out Grip Runner on YouTube, as well as their website, Facebook and Instagram!
