Vanessa Bassil is the founder and president of the Media Association for Peace, and has personally trained journalists and journalism students in Lebanon and other countries in the Middle East. She is currently in graduate school at the University of Bonn in Germany, working towards a PhD in Peace Journalism. Peace Journalism, the guiding practice behind Media Association for Peace, (MAP) is when editors and reporters make choices—of what to report, and how to report it—that create opportunities for society at large to consider and value non-violent responses to conflict. Growing up in an insulated Christian community in the wake of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), Vanessa never had the opportunity to meet a Lebanese Muslim. As a rookie journalist, instead of working inside of one of her country's ethnic media silos, she chose independence. She was drawn towards peacebuilding, and would report on camps that brought together groups of Sunni and Shia Muslims and Christians in the mountains. With the founding of MAP in 2013, Vanessa created a space where journalists learn to report on Lebanon's divisive issues – including an economic crisis, the difficulties of hosting Syrian refugees, and LGBTQ rights – in ways that are nuanced and depolarizing. What are some unexplored ways that online environments can help us rethink “the archive”? How might i-doc storytelling tools expand what an archive can be as well as public engagement with history itself? This presentation explores these questions through a demonstration of the online Southeast Chicago Archive and Storytelling Project. The project is based on a collaboration with the Southeast Chicago Historical Museum, a small volunteer-led museum in a diverse former steel mill region. The digital archive highlights objects saved and donated by community residents, what those items meant to donors, and the stories told around and through these objects. The website uses a variety of online storytelling techniques to help viewers connect with the objects and the histories from which they emerge. It also highlights how the historic conflicts found in this multi-racial working-class community – including those around labor, immigration, racial, and environmental struggles – continue to resonate in the contemporary moment. The website helps diverse working-class histories come alive for viewers through both objects and the spoken word in ways that are simultaneously striking and reflective of everyday life. Presenters include creative director and i-doc pioneer Jeff Soyk and the project directors, anthropologist Chris Walley and filmmaker Chris Boebel. Jeff Soyk is an award-winning media artist with credits as creative director and UI/UX designer on PBS Frontline’s Inheritance (2016 News & Documentary EMMY winner and Peabody-Facebook Award winner) as well as art director, UI/UX designer and architect on Hollow (2013 Peabody Award winner and News & Documentary EMMY nominee). Christine J. Walley is a Professor of Anthropology at MIT. She is the award-winning author of Exit Zero: Family and Class in Post-Industrial Chicago (University of Chicago Press, 2013) and a co-creator of a documentary film Exit Zero: An Industrial Family Story (2017). This week, Perspective revisits a topic which, behind all of the political activity of the present day, continues to bubble away in the background. Some years ago, big promises were made when it came to the film industry. To quote an MHK who would go on to become treasury minister, "I am pleading with you to cast off that starry-eyed spell that has been waved over you and start appreciating facts: there is no proper due diligence; there is no business plan." Alf Cannan was speaking about the Media Development Fund – which incurred losses of between 26 and 27 million pounds. In October, Perspective documented the first public oral evidence session of a committee, which was tasked with investigating these extensive losses, identifying whether further investigation is needed, and whether there are any changes to governance procedures required as a result of this situation. This week, the committee held its sixth public oral evidence session, and it was the turn of the Treasury Minister, Alf Cannan, and Chief Financial Officer Caldric Randall. The focus for this meeting was about the present day, and current governance procedures. The committee is made up of MHKs Clare Barber and Ann Corlett, plus Kate Lord-Brennan MLC. We listen in to that public oral evidence session - but first, we hear from Kate Costain MHK, who successfully argued for a team of three Tynwald members to look into the issue in July 2018.
Nothing of VALUE happens overnight... you don't just wake up and have a great marriage or a growing business or a thriving social media audience. How invested ARE you in what you've committed to? Are you getting up every day pouring everything you have into what you've decided are your top priorities?! Have you taken the TIME to learn your audience so you can actually create content that adds value to their life AND solves a REAL problem they have? Join Chad Kneller, Martevious Young and I as we have a conversation about trusting the process as a response to an interview between Ed Mylett & Michael and Lauryn Bosstick.
Some years ago, big promises were made when it came to the film industry. The old adage of 'speculate to accumulate' was banded around by some supporters of heavy investment in media here. Critics argued the proposals lacked some depth. To quote an MHK who would go on to become Treasury Minister, "I am pleading with you to cast off that starry-eyed spell that has been waved over you and start appreciating facts: there is no proper due diligence; there is no business plan." It would appear that Mr Cannan was right. The Media Development Fund is thought to have incurred losses of between 26 and 27 million pounds. And in July last year, the leader of Liberal Vannin argued there should be a full-scale inquiry into those losses, spearheaded by a Tynwald committee. If we fast-forward to September 2019, Kate Beecroft was summoned to give evidence to the very committee she had, essentially, laid the foundations for. Tynwald's Public Accounts Committee was tasked with identifying whether further investigation is needed, and whether there are any changes to governance procedures required as a result of this situation.

Just because more laws are being passed protecting media freedom across the world, it doesn't mean that governments will respect them, or allow citizens to use them. That's one of the “conflicting trends” to emerge from the latest World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development report, from UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO. For this latest edition of our Lid Is On podcast, from UN News, Matt Wells has been talking to one of the lead researchers behind the report. Music Credit: China Town by Audiobinger
