The future of DEI is murky. So the purpose of this panel discussion was to reflect on the recent developments in DEI and consider how we might evolve our effort to become more effective. We collectively dove into DEI around the murder of George Floyd - often with little to no experience. And it was a great discussion! The following were just a few of the ideas I took away: - We HAVE made progress. - And this problem is 400 years (or more) in the making. While we want to see change now, this is the work of generations i.e. a marathon not a sprint. - Much of our effort has been spent on diversity where the real work should focus on inclusion and equity. - To be effective we need to meet people where they are at. - If you are on the extreme right or extreme left, you may be contributing to the polarization. Overall, I'm left with a sense of hope and a reframed perspective. Thank you to the panelists: Amy E. Hull M. Ed. Amy is the Head of DEI for Paycor. This isn't my usual podcast episode, so you're in for a treat. This one is unique because it's 100% AI-generated. It's a bit cheesy, but I've been experimenting with Google's Notebook LM. One cool feature is that you can upload lots of documents and ask the AI to summarize them and answer questions. It can even create an AI-generated podcast episode that dives deep into whatever documents you upload. For this experiment, I had Google's Notebook LM talk about my two books, Inclusive Growth and Building Inclusivity, along with some other materials I've recently published on my website. This episode is the result of that experiment. I hope you enjoy it! Remember, it's entirely AI-generated and a bit cheesy, but I love trying out new technologies. In my books, I discuss how AI has a dark side due to inherent biases in its content. However, if used correctly, AI and machine learning can help accelerate diversity and inclusion. For example, I've been working with the University of Salford to see how AI can automatically analyze diversity data to give businesses real-time insights into their workforce's diversity.More impressively, AI can analyze employee feedback and sentiment within seconds. It can identify key themes about how employees feel in the organization. You can use this data to inform your equity, diversity, and inclusion strategy. The prototype software I've built can do this analysis in split seconds.Typically, analyzing a diversity and inclusion survey takes two or three days for a human to complete and report findings to a client. With AI, we can turn this around in mere seconds. So sit back, enjoy this episode, and I look forward to hearing your feedback!--->Unlock the secrets to creating an inclusive workplace with Toby Mildon, author of "Building Inclusivity" and "Inclusive Growth." When I'm prepping for a keynote, I love to spend time talking to the client about their DEI goals and current state. Between all these conversations, research for 5 Things, and research for my book, Inclusive 360, I think I figured out the winning formula for meaningful DEI progress: Purpose + Strategy + Accountability (PSA). It sounds simple but we all know it's not easy. Let me break it down:Purpose must be a people-first message that employees can rally around. Leaders should also share their own individual purposes.Strategy must be holistic and organization-wide, not simply workshops and coaching, not simply hiring more underrepresented talent.Accountability must be for all managers, or everyone, if you'd like, where engagement in or progress on DEI goals is a part of performance reviews. Here are the good vibes I found this week:LinkedIn Adds New Accessibility Features, Including Auto-Captions on VideosSoftware Helps Employers Fix Problematic Feedback Language Before It's Delivered‘The Whole Country Shines With a Huge Rainbow': Same-Sex Marriage Legal in All Mexican StatesDiwali Will Be a Public School Holiday in New York City Starting in 2023Disney Expands Costume Options For Children With DisabilitiesRead the full blog here: https://www.theequalityinstitute.com/equality-insights-blog/5-things-the-dei-psaTo learn more about Toby and his company, Mildon - visit: https://www.mildon.co.uk/This episode originally aired October 31, 2022 Join thousands of readers by subscribing to the 5 Things newsletter. In this episode, Toby Mildon joins us to talk about how diversity and inclusion can create a stronger workplace About Toby: Toby Mildon is a Diversity and inclusion Architect who is passionate about creating diverse workplaces and cultures that are inclusive. He has helped some of the UK's largest companies, including the BBC, Deloitte, Sony, and HarperCollins Publishing, improve staff retention, brand innovation, productivity, and performance. Toby's lifelong passion for Diversity and Inclusion stems from his personal and professional experiences with inequality, and his belief that building a culture of inclusive growth is essential for organizational success. Toby's Inclusive Growth Culture Program helps businesses implement real change and avoid shallow and superficial diversity initiatives. If a company has more than 250 employees, or is intending to grow to this size, Toby is the right person to help drive the business forward and achieve new heights. He speaks passionately about how moving beyond superficial diversity initiatives and building a culture of inclusive growth is essential. It addresses the underlying issues of inequality and creates a sustainable framework for continued growth and success. Toby's book, Inclusive Growth: Future-proof your business by creating a diverse workplace, provides a practical framework that enables you to deliver a sustainable, diverse and inclusive workplace that allows your organisation to grow. The book helps you understand how to strategically align diversity and inclusion to organisational growth, change the culture and motivate senior leaders to ‘walk the talk' for inclusivity, design and implement a sustainable inclusivity infrastructure, work as a whole organisation rather than in HR isolation, and celebrate your inclusivity to become an employer of choice in your industry. I wish him well as he continues to advance his career, and would be happy to serve as a reference to him as and when required." Here are some highlights from our conversation:- How Toby ‘fell' into D&I The 10/90 Iceberg analogy The scope of diversity Micro aggressions and micro inequities – what's the difference? Why some people don't challenge micro-inequities Representation unpacked The criticality of representation (in leadership and throughout) Fear of causing offence and its impact Diversity washing a.k.a. window dressing – the rhetoric gap Calling out and calling in – what's the difference? The ‘where D&I sits in the business' conundrum One of the first questions Toby asks when consulting with new clients and the critical follow up question Essential elements to achieve ‘the golden standard' The difference between equity and equality Integrating D&I into ‘the way we do business – and a clear comparison The hierarchy, chronology and priorities of D&I We ran out of time to cover intersectionality so here is a link to an explainer video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1islM0ytkE You can follow Toby on LinkedIn here https://www.linkedin.com/in/tobymildon/ Here are the links to Toby's resources Inclusive Growth Book UK - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inclusive-Growth-Future-proof-business-workplace/dp/178133448X Inclusive Growth Book Australia - https://www.booktopia.com.au/inclusive-growth-toby-mildon/book/9781781334485.html  Free workplace diversity assessment - https://mildon.scoreapp.com/   Inclusive Growth Podcast - https://inclusivegrowthshow.buzzsprout.com/ #rawthenticleadership #podcast #inclusion #diversityequityandinclusion #inclusioninleadership

What are the strategies for managing cultural change? How can we measure the impact? And what are the emerging trends that may have an influence? In EP121, Toby Mildon, Founder & Director of Mildon, joins Melinda in an action-oriented discussion on creating organizational culture change. They explore various change management models and strategic frameworks leaders can implement to drive DEI initiatives and measure their impact across teams. They tackle the importance of DEI practitioners taking a human-centered approach to problem-solving and using data to identify and address significant issues in the workplace. They also share insights on emerging DEI trends and the future of diversity, equity, and inclusion in business.About Toby Mildon (he/him)Toby Mildon, a leading expert in diversity and inclusion with a proven track record of success in helping some of the UK's largest companies - including the BBC, Deloitte, Sony, and HarperCollins Publishing - improve staff retention, brand innovation, productivity, and performance.Toby's lifelong passion for D&I stems from his personal and professional experiences with inequality, and his belief that building a culture of inclusive growth is essential for organizational success. He created the Inclusive Growth Culture Program to help businesses like yours implement real change and avoid superficial diversity initiatives. If your company has more than 250 employees (or is expecting to grow to this size), Toby is the right person to help you drive your business forward and achieve new heights.Moving beyond superficial diversity initiatives and building a culture of inclusive growth is essential because it addresses the underlying issues of inequality and creates a sustainable framework for continued growth and success. Companies that focus on this approach see better results, both in terms of revenue growth and employee engagement.Diverse and inclusive workforces contribute to brand innovation and productivity because they bring together different perspectives and experiences, which can lead to more creative solutions and better decision-making. Looking to the future, Toby sees D&I becoming increasingly important for business competitiveness. He encourages companies to prepare themselves for these developments by prioritizing D&I and making it an integral part of their organizational strategy. By doing so, companies can become leaders in their industry and attract and retain top talent. For more about Empovia, visit https://ally.cc. 5 Things In 15 Minutes The Podcast: Bringing Good Vibes to DEI

When I'm prepping for a keynote, I love to spend time talking to the client about their DEI goals and current state. Leaders should also share their own individual purposes.Strategy must be holistic and organization-wide, not simply workshops and coaching, not simply hiring more underrepresented talent.Accountability must be for all managers, or everyone, if you'd like, where engagement in or progress on DEI goals is a part of performance reviews.Consider Purpose + Strategy + Accountability (PSA) as a three-legged stool that wobbles depending on what's missing (a metaphor borrowed from the book Unleashed). In a short conversation with a client, that framework will allow our team to quickly identify the areas of opportunity that can move the needle most quickly. I love that we get to do this stuff! Here are the good vibes I found this week:LinkedIn Adds New Accessibility Features, Including Auto-Captions on VideosSoftware Helps Employers Fix Problematic Feedback Language Before It's Delivered‘The Whole Country Shines With a Huge Rainbow': Same-Sex Marriage Legal in All Mexican StatesDiwali Will Be a Public School Holiday in New York City Starting in 2023Disney Expands Costume Options For Children With DisabilitiesRead the full blog here: https://www.theequalityinstitute.com/equality-insights-blog/5-things-the-dei-psaTo learn more about Toby and his company, Mildon - visit: https://www.mildon.co.uk/ Join thousands of readers by subscribing to the 5 Things newsletter. That’s where we need to take the conversation to.” To a way of behaving, a way of being with people. Culture is the sum of all small to big behaviours in the workplace. Toby highlights his approach of championing and supporting people at the top of organisations to really lead the way and demonstrate inclusive behaviours. “Inclusive leaders are bold and they’re not afraid to rock the boat.” They’re comfortable with uncomfortable conversations. They’re open to new information.

I absolutely loved this conversation with Inclusion Architect and export Toby Mildon. In what was a hopeful, constructive and forward-looking conversation, we touched on inclusion, belonging, awareness, culture, leadership and so much more. Some key insights included: - “Diversity includes everybody. We need to make sure that everybody, every single person, is included and taken on the journey because it is only when businesses reflect the communities in which they’re based and the talent that’s around them, and the communities in which they serve, that they become high-performing businesses” – 03.10 “Sometimes I like to be sarcastic by saying that I will write the business case for you (D&I) when you write the business case why we should hire non-disabled people” - 09.45 “My recommendation is to use reverse mentoring with someone from a different background. Lean back, lean forward and step in” – 38.30 - “What three talking points do you need to give to your Chief Executive so that they are able to talk confidently from a podium about why diversity & inclusion is important to the organisation” – 04.40 - “(D&I) The business case is that it is the right thing to, we are talking about human rights. We should be creating businesses that enable anybody to work in the business regardless of their background so that they can come and contribute their best work so that the business thrives” – 09.00 - “My tip to anyone that wants to progress D&I in their organisation is to find out what language sticks within the business and speak that language in order to get your message across” – 12.00 - “The reason why I like co-creation is because so many organisations when they implement D&I it’s usually done from the HR department, done to people in the organisation, rather than down with” – 15.20 Toby can be contacted via the following means: Email - toby@mildon.co.uk Website - https://www.mildon.co.uk/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/tobymildon/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/tobymildon Bio: Toby Mildon is a Diversity & Inclusion Architect and founder of Mildon, a consultancy and advisory business. When you think about inclusive environment design, you might think about creating gender neutral toilets. But what about creating toilets accessible for guide dogs too? If you’re a gay man and a disabled person, where do you go when your LGBTQ+ ERG and your Disability ERG host an event on the same night? In turns out, often our well intentioned inclusion strategies can be exclusive.  Toby Mildon is a Diversity and Inclusion Architect at MILDON, formerly D&I lead at Deloitte and the BBC, and a pioneer of intersectionality. We chatted to Toby about: The problem with tackling D&I one underrepresented group at a time How to navigate the tension between benefits that are genuinely inclusive and those that are naturally exclusive, like childcare supplements His thoughts on “people-first” language (and inclusive language in general) Watch out for Toby’s forthcoming book due out in Autumn 2019, tentatively titled Inclusive Growth.

Tune in for soul story time! This episode takes you on a journey of the Buddha... Amanda Giacomini aka 10,000 Buddhas is an artist, yoga teacher and storyteller. Her 10,000 Buddhas project was inspired by a pilgrimage to the Ajanta caves in India where she saw a two thousand year old mural of a thousand Buddhas meditating together. This experience sparked an awakening, which led her on a mission to paint 10,000 Buddhas, spreading a message of kindness, compassion, and connection with her art. Over the course of a decade, Amanda reached and surpassed her goal, making 10,000 Buddhas a highly sought after, worldwide art project, including large scale public murals, fine art paintings, works on paper, and textiles. Her street art can be found across the United States from Washington DC, Miami, Palm Beach and Asheville, North Carolina to Seattle, San Diego, and Hollywood, CA. She has also painted murals in Panama, Costa Rica, Germany and Japan. As a teacher, Amanda has taught yoga to tens of thousands of people all over the world; from prestigious art museums and yoga festivals, to The White House and the Forbidden City in China. She is the co-founder of Point Reyes Yoga, a studio she and her husband, MC YOGI, started in 2001. Amanda has been teaching yoga for 20 years, practicing for over 25 and meditating for 30. Her approach to teaching is gentle and wise, one of her greatest joys is sharing the healing benefits of yin yoga while interweaving mythic stories from the Buddhist and yoga traditions. Amanda lives in Northern California with her husband MC YOGI and continues to paint Buddhas.
