It's a special day today as I'm off to Costa Rica baby. Pura Vida to all! I think this is my 4th virtual visit to a country that sits high on my “must visit” list. And we're equally pleased to be chatting with Mr. Richard Blank, who is somewhat of an icon in the capital city of San Jose. You'll understand why in a moment. Richard's vision quest journey is filled with twists and turns. When he was 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in the capital. With a mix of motivational public speaking style backed by tactful and appropriate rhetoric, Richard shared his knowledge and trained over 10,000 bilingual telemarketers. Today Richard is the Chief Executive Officer for Costa Rica's Call Center which he founded in 2008. Fun fact and to my point about being an icon - Richard has the largest collection of restored American Pinball machines and antique Rockola Jukeboxes in Central America making gamification a strong part of Costa Rica Call Centre culture. Richard holds a bachelor's degree in Communication and Spanish from the University of Arizona and a certificate of language proficiency from the University of Sevilla, Spain. He was a keynote speaker for Philadelphia's Abington High School 68th National Honors Society induction ceremony. And in addition, has been inducted into the 2023 Hall of Fame for Business. Giving back to Abington Senior High School is very important to Mr. Blank. As such, he endows a scholarship each year for students who plan on majoring in a world language at the university level. Richard explains that ecotourism, cost of living, and culture are major advantages to living in Costa Rica compared to countries such as The United States. Costa Rica's Call Center was created when Richard worked at a friend's call center in Costa Rica teaching English. The work was something he gravitated to and decided he wanted to start his own call center business venture. Richard explains they work to fulfill the needs of the client and agent by providing support, training, and adequate hiring.  Richard explains that he helps make his employees feel more confident in their language skills and broaden their vocabulary to aid them in their work duties. Costa Rica's Call Center sets itself apart from other competitors as they are bilingual with an incredible skill set that also upholds the reserved values of Costa Rica. Richard explains a misconception about working with Costa Rica's Call Center is getting a cheaper price because that is the price commonly used by other call centers in different countries such as India. Another misconception is the being able to partner with the company and not blurring ideals between the two such as using profanities when they do not do so as things work differently between different areas.    Key Points from the Episode: What Costa Rica's Call Center is  Advantages of Costa Rica How Costa Rica's Call Center was created The importance of linguistics  How Costa Rica's Call Center differs from its competitors  Misconceptions of using Costa Rica's Call Center    About Richard Blank: Richard's journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. In this episode… When business owners think about telemarketing, they often envision those aggressive-type callers who inundate people with calls, so they pass on implementing it into their business. As a result, they miss out on the opportunity for inbound support, outbound lead generation, and appointment setting.  Additionally, many businesses that do set up call support often make the mistake of focusing on the number of calls made or received rather than the quality. Bootstrapping his way from just a desk and a single account to a large successful call center in Costa Rica, Founder and CEO Richard Blank joins Jim Barnish on this episode to share his insight on effective communication strategies, investing in his teams, and the power of positive escalation. With a track record for successful sales and training programs, Richard walks us through his key communication strategies that are beneficial not just for landing a sale, but also for every relationship in life. They discuss soft skill training instead of just hitting the sales goals; his “buffer boomerang technique” that keeps conversations constructive; “positive escalation” that builds relationships and pipelines, and boosts morale among teams; and how to hone your listening skill with “phonetic, micro expression reading.”Join their conversation on reducing attrition by helping people grow, and in turn, growing the business.3 Key TakeawaysInvest in your teams not as a means to an end, but as individuals who will pay it forward in the organization for years to come. Have faith in your people.Use effective communication techniques that will not only land a sale, but build relationships that will last. Positive escalation is the practice of building (real) relationships with everyone in the organization that you speak with.
